A robot at the University of Michigan appears to have become the world’s fastest non-sentient runner after it was clocked at a maximum speed of 6.8 miles per hour.

Created in 2008, MABEL the running robot has come a long way from its first shaky steps. Software controlling its movement has gradually improved from the point where it was barely able to walk until now, with complex algorithms calculating the precise movements needed to keep balance while moving at full-hilt.

Researchers hope that one day, this same technology may one day enable handicapped people to walk again, or assist with work in dangerous conditions.
