Stephen Colbert wonders how the War on Terror can continue if al-Qaeda is defeated.
COLBERT: Nation, the great thing about the War on Terror is that if we fight it right, it can go on forever. Fighting in Iraq puts us in position to fight in Iran. And who knows what will come after that? I’m hoping Irap. But our permanent war may be endangered. Last week C.I.A. Director Michael Hayden said, quote, al-Qaeda is on the verge of a strategic defeat in Iraq. There are clear elements of clear defeat in Saudi Arabia. al-Qaeda is losing? They’re our key ally in never having to explain what our government is doing. But Hayden knows what he’s talking about. He’s the head of the C.I.A. and they are never wrong about al-Qaeda. And when they are, it’s top secret. Even Vice President Cheney admitted that the war on terror was on its last legs when he spoke at the Coast Guard Academy commencement.
CHENEY: The war on terror is a lengthy enterprise but it does not have to go on forever.
COLBERT: No, it just has to make it until January.
