During a town hall event in Portsmouth, OH, John McCain was asked why he wasn’t more supportive of 9/11 victims.

The questioner asked, “I was curious about a document. Back in September of 2000, Project for New American Century (PNAC) whose members included Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush and Paul Wolfowitz wrote a document entitled “Rebuilding Americans Defenses.” In it, they state, quote “The process of transformation, even if it bring revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one absent some catastrophic and catalysing event like new Pearl Harbour.” Now, many Americans believe that that “new Pearl Harbor” event took place on 9/11. And according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 84% of Americans believe that there were some criminal elements of our government involved in 9/11. Can you tell us about your roll of the “New Citizen Project” founded in 1994 which served a chief fund-raising and parent organization for PNAC? And is this one of the factors that has made you so reluctant the victims family members and first responders who are begging for a new investigation into 9/11? It’s a serious question. ”

McCain answered that he had teamed with Sen. Joe Lieberman to create the 9/11 Commission and supported its findings.
