MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and David Shuster talked with Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin about why the New York Times refused to publish an op-ed by John McCain. Halperin defended The New York Times’ choice.

Halperin said, “That page has a pretty high standard. They don’t want any op-ed piece just because it has a big name on it. When they said ‘mirrors’, what they meant was Obama did his news in the Times, the next day he gave his big speech that previewed it. They wanted a piece that went beyond the usual rhetoric that McCain does on this issue.”

“Obama submitted his at particular time for particular reason. They have run pieces of McCain many times, many, they are not objecting to that but they want the standard that they have. Which is not to run the boilerplate language,” said Halperin.
