Fox’s Martha MacCallum talked with Robert Novak about his report that John McCain may announce his VP choice this week. Novak said that the story may have been a publicity stunt to take media attention away from Obama.

Partial transcript

MACCALLUM: The McCain folks have been very tight-lipped on this. The kind of grinning that we saw today has been happening. Do you stand by this story that he will announce this week?

NOVAK: Well, I never said that. Let me tell you what happened. I had a suggestion from a very senior McCain aide late yesterday afternoon that he was going to announce it this week. They didn’t want it to come out the way it was going to come out. They suggested that I put it out. I then called another senior person who said, “I can’t talk about that” but wouldn’t this be a terrific week to announce it. That is with Obama getting the headlines? So, I just put something on the internet that sources close to the McCain campaign suggested that he might name it this week but did not disclose the name. I since have been told by certain people that this was a dodge. They were trying to get a little publicity to rain on Obama’s campaign. That’s pretty reprehensible, if it’s true. We will find out in a few days whether what I suggested was true or was a scam.

MACCALLUM: Bob, it seem like they are a little short on things to come out with for attention lately.

NOVAK: Right.

MACCALLUM: And the talk was that this was going to happen right after the convention to try to grab a piece of that attention away from him. Sounds like they don’t have a whole lot of powder.

NOVAK: No, I think that if this was just a scam it was a pretty shabby operation. We’ll know if a few days. The buzz has been around for a week or two that the probable choice is going to be Mitt Romney but there is nothing hard on that either.
