Does new RNC ad undercut McCain message?

A new advertisement released by the Republican National Committee may undercut GOP presidential candidate John McCain’s message.

Politico’s Ben Smith reports: “The Republican National Committee’s new advertisement critical of the the Wall Street ‘bailout’ was produced and sent to television stations in key states before the package failed, officials at two stations said.”

The ad, entitled “Worse” begins, “Meltdown. Wall Street Squanders our money. And Washington is forced to bail them out with — you guessed it — our money. Can it get any worse?”

Smith writes, “The ad taps into deep resentment of the plan, but it comes at a time when the candidate it supports, John McCain, is urging its package, and asking that it not be referred to as a ‘bailout,’ but a ‘rescue.’”

The New Republic’s Christopher Orr observes, “You know things are getting dicey when the RNC goes on the air with an ad attacking the very bailout plan that, 24 hours ago, was the centerpiece of John McCain’s claim of economic leadership.”

Orr says that this shows that the “RNC either isn’t coordinating with the McCain campaign or is doing so very poorly.”

Wonkette also mocks the “SILLY RNC.”
