Bill Clinton told CNN’s Anjali Rao that Hillary Clinton was shocked when she first read that she was being consider for Secretary of State. Clinton said that he talked to his wife about everything but doesn’t expect an official role in Barack Obama’s administration.

Partial transcript

CLINTON: I think she was shocked. She first read about it in the newspaper, the speculation.

RAO: Really?

CLINTON: Yeah. It was, I think, a very wise decision by the president-elect and I think she made the right decision but for her it was hard. She adored being in the senate.

CLINTON: I think my involvement will be what our involvement with each other’s work has always been. That is, all the years I was a governor and president, I talked to her about everything and, you know, found her advice invaluable. And I’m sure that we’ll talk about all this. And I really care about a lot of these profound challenges that our country and the world are facing but the decisions will have to be ultimately the president-elect Obama’s decisions. I’ll just try to be a helpful sounding board to her but I don’t think I will do any more than that unless he asks me to do something specific which I’m neither looking for or closed to.
