House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded to rumors that President Barack Obama may leave up to 50,000 troops in Iraq.

“I don’t know the justification of 50,000 troop presence in iraq. I know there is a need of some. I don’t know that all need to be in country. They can be platformed outside. I am interested in hearing what the president has to say. I would think a third of that, maybe 20,000, 15,000 or 20,000,” Pelosi told Rachel Maddow.

Former Rep. Tom Andrews is director of the Win Without War coalition. He believes that a residual force in Iraq of 50,000 is dangerous. “There’s a lot of people inside and outside of the Pentagon that have designs on obscuring this difference between combat and residual force and use it to keep combat operations going,” he said.
