In something of an ambush interview on Tuesday, CNN reporter Dana Bash caught up to Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) and asked whether he plans to resign over claims that he violated ethics rules in aiding the husband of his former mistress.

“No, definitely not,” he told Bash when asked if his resignation is impending.

“Mr. Ensign’s remarks were his first public comments on the controversy since The New York Times reported last week that he helped get lobbying jobs in 2008 for the former aide, Douglas Hampton, a longtime friend, and then intervened with government agencies on behalf of Mr. Hampton’s corporate clients,” noted a Tuesday Times report.

The Washington Post added: “Ensign admitted to the affair earlier this year and disclosed payments totaling $96,000 to the Hampton family under the names of his parents. But the Times report revived calls for Ensign’s resignation and has breathed new life into possible investigations of his activities.”

Speaking to Bash, Ensign insisted that all he had done for Hampton was to recommend him for jobs, “just like I’ve recommended a lot of other people.”

“We did nothing but comply, exactly, with what the ethics rules and the laws of the Senate state,” he continued. “We were very careful in everything that we did and you can see our statements on that.”

Ensign added that he would be cooperating with “any official inquiries.”
