US talk show star David Letterman apologized on the air to his wife who he said had been “horribly hurt” by his admission that he had sexual affairs with staffers.

Letterman also offered a mea culpa to his staff in the show aired late Monday. He said they had been “wonderfully supportive” since the furor over his trysts and a two million dollar blackmail attempt erupted.

The 62-year-old comic made his apology in the first show taped since his admission Thursday that he had sex with coworkers and had been the target of an extortion attempt.

This video is from CBS’ Late Night with David Letterman, broadcast Oct. 5, 2009.
