WASHINGTON — Following Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-NV) success in uniting Democrats around health reform, one Tea Party group has launched a new effort to defeat his re-election bid next year.
“Harry Reid is going to get what’s due him,” reads a fundraising email from the Our Country Deserves Better PAC, which has organized a scathing and personal ad slamming Reid.
“Senator Reid,” says a voice in the ad, “it is we the people that have been slaves to your failures and arrogance. Your billion dollar bailouts, higher taxes and out-of-control deficit spending have failed the people of Nevada and failed America.”
The group is attempting to raise $100,000 this week “to help get this ad broadcast on every Nevada TV station morning, noon and night,” reads the email. It urges people to donate money.
“We the voters are going to hand you a pink slip and vote you out of office,” the ad says to Reid.
The Democratic Majority Leader is projected to face a tough re-election in 2010. A Mason-Dixon poll released this month by found that Reid’s approval rating in his home state of Nevada was 38 percent, while his negatives were at 49.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that up to nine potential Republican candidates could square off in the primaries next year, two of whom are currently polling ahead of Reid in hypothetical head-to-head match-ups.
Reid has also faced criticism from progressives this month for allegedly vacillating on the public option. Speaking about his role with regard to the provision, Jane Hamsher of the liberal website FireDogLake.com wrote that “Reid has to deliver in order to move the legislation.”
Passage of this bill would likely give Reid a boost in his popularity, as uniting the caucus to pass sweeping legislation on a liberal priority would be a major victory for Democrats.
“Our bill will bring needed relief to millions of Americans who wake up every day without health insurance,” Reid said Monday in a press conference. “Our responsibility as legislators is to care for all people, not just those that are fortunate. That’s what this historic reform fixes.”
“Americans are dying from diseases we know how to treat, living in pain because it’s too expensive,” he added. “The bill will soon be sent to the president — it will save lives, save money, extend Medicare for 10 years and basically save Medicare.”
