House Rep. Ron Paul had some harsh words for his fellow Republican, former Vice President Dick Cheney, on CNN Monday night.

Responding to Cheney’s comments last week that “we are at war and when President Obama pretends we aren’t, it makes us less safe,” the noted Texas libertarian made it clear he wasn’t interested in hearing from the former VP.

“I think he had his eight years and he’s caused a lot of trouble for our country, and he perpetuated a war in Iraq that was unnecessary and wrong-headed. I would say it would be best he not be so critical right now,” Paul told CNN’s Larry King.

Paul went on to question the fundamental basis for the war on terror, now re-dubbed the war on al-Qaeda by the Obama administration.

“Fourteen or 15 of the [9/11] terrorists came from Saudi Arabia,” Paul said. “We didn’t attack Saudi Arabia, we attacked Iraq. It doesn’t make sense. … You don’t declare war against these countries and say we have to go in and start bombing Pakistan and bombing Afghanistan and bombing Yemen.”

The terrorists “happen to be there, that’s true, but they’re there because we stimulate them,” Paul said. “We’ve fallen into the hands of Osama bin Laden by us going there and causing people to get so angry that it helps his recruiting efforts. He has written about this. He has said, ‘I want the Americans to come over here and get bogged down, bankrupt their country, and besides it’ll help my recruiting efforts.’ And we are doing exactly what he had planned.”

Rep. Ron Paul told CNN’s Larry King that former Vice President Dick Cheney doesn’t have the standing to criticize President Barack Obama’s handling of terrorist threats. “I think he had his eight years, and he’s caused a lot of trouble for our country and perpetuated a war in Iraq unnecessary and wrong-headed,” said Paul. “I would say it would be best he not be so critical right now.”
