Economists say the Democrats’ stimulus package saved or created one to two million jobs, but the Senate Minority Leader isn’t about to admit it.

“I think the evidence is pretty clear, you know Tiger Woods and John Edwards had a better year than the stimulus did,” Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Fox News’ Chris Wallace Sunday.

McConnell did concede that there was some benefit from stimulus money. “The stimulus probably did save state government jobs,” said McConnell.

According to Recovery.gov Kentucky has been awarded approximately $2.5 billion and 10,000 jobs there have been created or saved.

Wallace went on to point out that Senator McConnell praised the stimulus in August of last year, saying of the Blue Grass Army Depot receiving millions of dollars, “This is going to be a source of significant employment.”

McConnell clarified that he is glad the nation’s governors can take advantage of the stimulus to make the employment situation for state employees better. However, he said “the Federal government borrowing money from our grandchildren” has not kept unemployment at 8%.

“It has done little or nothing to stimulate private sector employment,” he said.

One year after signing the stimulus bill, the president credited it on Wednesday with keeping America out of a second Great Depression. “One year later, it is largely thanks to the Recovery Act that a second depression is no longer a possibility,” Obama said.

Wednesday, McConnell responded, “This was not the plan Americans asked for or the results they were promised.”
