Rove: ‘Largely novices … unsophisticated people’ at Tea Party rallies

Suggests civil rights protesters in early days said equally ‘unfortunate and unnecessary’ things

Democrats are sometimes accused of being elitists who look down on honest working folk, but former White House senior adviser Karl Rove appears to harbor a certain condescension of his own towards “unsophisticated” Tea Partiers.

MSBC’s Savannah Guthrie questioned Rove on Wednesday about the “unfortunate language used this weekend at some of the rallies that one of the Tea Party founders apologized for.”

“To the extent that the Tea Party is equated with the Republican Party, is that a concern for you?” she asked.

“This Tea Party movement is largely novices, relatively politically unsophisticated people, and as a result sometimes their rhetoric is raw and angry,” Rove replied. “That’s the downside.”

“The upside,” he continued, “is that a large number of people who have heretofore been spectators have been motivated by a deep concern about our country to get involved in politics.”

Rove went on to excuse the violent rhetoric of the Tea Partiers by suggesting that “if you look back at the beginning of other similar movements, whether it’s the anti-war movement or the civil rights movement or the pro-life movement, there are angry things said that I suspect in retrospect a lot of people realize are unfortunate and unnecessary.”

Rove did not offer any examples, however, and he appears to be misinformed about the atmosphere that existed in the early days of the civil rights movement.

The 1950s and early 60s were marked by a pervasive climate of lynchings and racial violence, in which fourteen-year-old Emmett Till could be brutally murdered for not following his mother’s advice to “mind his manners” with white people and even white volunteers like Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, might be kidnapped and killed (dramatized in the 1988 film Mississippi Burning). As a result, the early civil rights leaders and protesters were known for their politeness and adherence to non-violence in both their words and actions.

Even while being beaten and clubbed by police and irate drug store employees, civil rights protesters had to remain non-violent and compliant, since the alternative could have resulted in lengthy jail sentences, permanent injuries, or death.

the problem here is that you have two countries that will never be able to get along. Israel fears Irans leaders will act to distroy them as they said they would to bring on their messiah, and Iran is being led by madmen. You cannot talk to a madman , they think that killing all jews is what their messaih wants they have been brainwashed and their is no way to make them understand. Unfortunately the only way to stop the madness is to kill it. sadly the iranians will pay a horrible price. but its them or us and I choose us. When the attack comes it will have to be more severe than when we hit japan in ww2. Nukes will have to be used Iran will be the one that is distroyed

How about this. We leave Iran alone. They have most of the country forward thinking and Western leaning, especially the young educated people. If we leave Iran alone their own people will take it down. If we bomb them, it will only cause them to rally together against us. How about we stop meddling and work on getting our own country back on its feet. Not all, but some of these GOP’s just can’t hate enough(everything, everyone). Not to say the Dem’s have it all right either, they don’t. We need to have other countries working on this problem with us and not a unilateral answer. They are like loud, whiny children throwing tantrums. They obviously don’t hear what they sound like. They are very extravagant with other peoples lives, children/soldiers and money. They are grotesque.

Wow you are incredibly stupid. Iran has NEVER attack the United States, Israel has! The USS Liberty, 34 dead Americans 171 injured told by their very own government if they ever talk about it they will be killed. LBJ ordered rescue planes down TWICE.

The United States not only instigated the Iran-Iraq war by encouraging Iraq to attack and supplying them with training, weapons, and intelligence, but they supplied them with the WMDs that they later attacked them for possessing (the 2nd time, after they destroyed what was left the 1st time). Anthrax and mustard gas were used against the Iranian people.

Now we fund special operations conducted through proxy groups like ethnic minorities and black water to perform terrorist attacks on Iran. Do you really wonder why Iran chants death to America? As an American, Americans are the dumbest people on earth. They have the ability to find out what is going on but choose not to learn. Disgusting, and the Iranian above is right. I hope it is your children slaughtered in retaliation and not people that did not help bring it upon themselves’.

Proof once again that sociopaths will say anything to excuse their own behavior. And if there is a classic case of a sociopath, it's this scum bag. And as if anyone needed it, proof that Rove doesn't know a thing that he flaps his jaws about.

Why is this “man” NOT in jail?

JHC, shut this piece of shit up. The more he opens his mouth, the more it becomes evident that he's full of shit and nothing but a criminal trying to sway weak minded public opinion.

Karl Rove. He is a man for all ages. He has done more with his life to the service of the ruling class than any other person in the world….and for that I thank him from the bottom of my heart. He taught me to love my country and be patriotic, but also to hate the government and the poor people that want handouts. He taught me that all government has failed and that only the private sector is honest and works for people because profits are earned. He taught me that unions have ruined this country because workers shouldn't have a piece of the ruling class pie. He taught me that nobody should have healthcare because we are all rugged individualists that don't want entitlements….we are men that don't need cared after. We don't cry. We don't help others except for the pennies that we throw in the Salvation Army can at Christmas time. Thank you Mr. Rove for showing me how the founding fathers would have wanted me to act and think. Because of you I am going to wear some 1776 attire and throw rocks at sick, poor people. I will be angry but I will have fun and be happy and filled with joy.

  • Hooker

“Novices. unsophisticated”, true, but also ignorant, stupid, mean-spirited, bigoted, racist and violent.

The marchers for civil rights were none of these things. They were beaten, thrown in jail and even killed, but the marched peacefully and courageously, with basic human respect for their most evil enemies.

John Lewis was almost beaten to death and to think of him, a true American hero, being spat upon in 2010 by Tea Party pigs, is almost too difficult to bear

U.S. AGREES TO REPAY HOLLANDS $900,000
Story excerpt: In what may be the biggest award of its kind, the (karl rove) Justice Department has agreed to pay slightly more than $900,000 to Richard J. Holland Jr. and the estate of his deceased father, Richard J. Holland, for their expenses in a bank-fraud case that was dismissed.

The senior Holland had been chairman of Farmers Bank in Windsor before he died in April, and his son is the bank's president and chief executive officer. The two were tried in federal court in Norfolk 2 1/2 years ago …

  • Lyman

And so here you have it. History echoing itself once again.
Rove calls the Tea-baggers useful idiots. Hitler did the same thing with
the Brown Shirts. Hitler is always displayed as ultimate Evil. That is
a cop-out. Hitler is dead but Evil seems to be immortal.

  • Savantster

kind of cute how the media has re-framed the self named “tea baggers” to partiers. I mean, we all laugh at tea-baggers but everyone loves a party!

course, tea parties are what little girls have with their imaginary friends.. so this is still a bit applicable as these people are raging against imaginary slights. But still.

  • uberliberal

Civil rights protesters might have shouted things not picked up on camera, etc., but they also did not bring guns to rallies, draw images of sitting presidents as Hitler or display bad manners at ppublic gatherings by shouting down their largely ignorant opposition. Today all that has changed. These people aren't just a little unsophisticated; they are rude, angry and on the edge of violence. They ignorantly disrupted every town meeting (as instructed by their ideological masters: Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc.) and prevented a real public debate from taking place. Instead they replaced discourse with deliberate lies, untruths and racist commentary.

Tea partiers have shown their true colors and they are lily white and violent. Not one of them was out protesting for fiscal sanity when the country entered two wars it could not afford. No one takes them seriously, other than as violent threats to democracy who could easily be led into supporting far right corporate/fascist masters.

  • Thomas Jefferson

    jackass rove, says what?

  • plunger

“As people do better, they start voting like Republicans – unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing.”

    Karl Rove.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, THE TRUTH IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF THE STATE.”

    – Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

  • commonwealth

Rove is quite the quintessential ignoramus.

Civil Rights protesters never did the same as Tea Party protesters, else the Civil Rights protesters would be clobbered off the head with bats and taken away to jail (which happened anyway.)

Facts are stubborn things, Rove is a liar, the proof is in the archival film of Dr. King's marches.

Thank God, in 50 years from now, hopefully, we will have real historians writing real history.

  • erik77

Ain't it the truth. Rove certainly has studied Goebbels and Dems try to debate them with logic. You would think they'd learn.

  • buttsniffer

This country has nothing to do with democracy. It is a constitutional republic and that is final. Democracy is pinko and leads to healthcare reform, environmental standards, and corporate regulation…..being a republic means the ruling class gets to make the profit they earn and they can choose to give to charities which in turn help the sick. The government doesn't help the sick because if they do they will fail like everything else the government does. The government is so bad that it baffles me that the founding fathers even founded it. It would have been better for them to found a corporation that made profit and not a government. I love the founding fathers and I love America….it is just that hate the government and the people. I am patriotic and angry that people want the government to nanny them…..do for yourself like Ayn Rand says. Be a rugged individualist. Be a Reagan Revolution and protest your right to live in country where wealth is concentrated at the top levels where it belongs. Well, time to knock some books out of peoples hands and bully people to the point where they have no self esteem. I am going to throw a rock at somebody who should be in a wheelchair or should be receiving chemotherapy but can't afford either without healthcare. It is my civic duty.

  • Margie

Novices, unsophisticated. There are many people in this country that fit that discription, myself included.
However, the signs and the angry shouting was not that they didn't know better.
    They did.
Some how they got the idea that it was ok for them to behave the way they did.
Maybe it was the republicans egging them on from the house balcony!
You, mr rove should be in prison, rather than condoning the racist activites
    of the tea party goons.

  • Sharona

Yeah, the civil rights marchers were so rude and violent, they sang “Oh Freedom,” “We Shall Overcome,” and “Amazing Grace” all while being beaten with sticks, zapped with cattle prods, bitten by dogs, and knocked down with fire hoses. Rove shows he was totally wearing his bow tie and carrying his big leather briefcase to class in the Sixties while us hippies were protesting the war and expanding our consciousness, and I mean that in a good way. Poor Rove, I feel sorry for him but now he's just a vengeful dick.

“”" Rove went on to excuse the violent rhetoric of the Tea Partiers by suggesting that “if you look back at the beginning of other similar movements, whether it's the anti-war movement or the civil rights movement or the pro-life movement, there are angry things said that I suspect in retrospect a lot of people realize are unfortunate and unnecessary.”"”"

Someone in MSM should confront him with, “Then you called them bleeding heart liberals, now you're inferring that they were violent.” It's time to make ol' Karl make a choice of admitting his mistake or turning his own brain into jello as he tries to explain his way out of oxymoronical cognitive disonance. Now THAT would be fair and balanced.

The civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's was one of the proudest moments in American history, not only because it successfully championed the liberation of the oppressed, but also because it was a totally non-violent movement. For Karl Rove to lie about that good moment in our history by equating it with the hate-filled violence of the Teabag movement is despicable. In his own slimy way, Rove has dumped garbage on the memory of Martin Luther King and all the other non-violent heroes of the civil rights movement. Only a vile racist like Rove would even contemplate such calumny.

I think Rove may be right about the raw anger and “unfortunate language” he associates with the antiwar and civil rights movements of the 1960s. He's confused only about which side this raw anger came from. The “don't tread on me” nationalists, militarists and white supremacists who counter-demonstrated against antiwar and civil rights protesters during this period commonly displayed uninhibited rage at peaceful demonstrators. What Rove and his Republican friends don't like to admit is that the hate speech of teabagger demonstrators, like hate speech of the KKK and John Birchers during the 1960s, is not anything new.

Someone should ask him just which side he was referring to when he made the comment about how similar things happened during civil rights marches. Lee Atwater came clean on his death bed. Karl Rove may or may not. Atwater and Rove deserve a memorial in Washington, a heroic 19th century style bronze sculpture called “The Conquest of the Great Operatives.” Atwater will have his electric guitar and Rove will be bringing George W. Bush his coat.

Find a place to put it, a fix it to a massive stone pedestal and leave it for generations to come to ponder.

  • Bill O'Rights

Failing to distinguish between the Palin Warmongers and the Ron Paul Peacemongers is really unsophisticated. I am embarrassed for the writer of this article and for the many, many posters here who fail to make the distinction – you are simply reading from the MSM playbook and not thinking for yourselves. There is no similarity between the two groups, yet Tea Party or the more perjorative 'tea bagger' names are ignorantly used, all day long, lumping them together. Be very suspicious of any stories focusing on a violent individual or tiny group with 'and he's a tea-bagger' in the story – Ron Paul is the greatest threat to the powers that be and is all about non-violent change through government channels and democratic process.

  • Bill O'Rights

I've never seen more hate-filled language than on this board – hatefully describing the tea party movement. Sounds like a bunch of Nazi's or KKK members calling for a lynching. Is there really something wrong with calling for a restoration of the Bill of Rights and to stop engaging in military police actions around the world, and to move taxing and spending to local governments rather than being under centralized Federal government control? Be more savvy – ask who owns the media you're relying on and why they might want to derail any tea-party movement.

  • Druthers

Is that Rove we hear saying, “If you look back?” Just those words should make his blood run cold and send tremors of fear down his spine.
What if WE looked back? Are those WMD's under that table? Is that yellowcake from Africa? Wilson, no, don't say that name, Are those Federal AG's in prison? The list just goes on and on.
I do declare, now I am the one with tremors of fear running down my spine. He is still out and about!

Karl Rove seemed to look down on Tea Parties Wednesday as he told MSNBC’s Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd that protesters were “unsophisticated people.”

This video is from MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown, broadcast March 24, 2010.
