Poll: ‘Anti-socialist’ Tea Party activists want government to create jobs

Tea Party sympathizers are against government “socialism” except when it comes to their own jobs, a new poll has found.

Seventy percent of those who identify as Tea Partiers — a platform that strongly decries government intervention in public life — want an interventionist government to create jobs, and only about one in three believe Medicaid and Medicare are “socialist” programs, according to a new Bloomberg poll.

“Tea Party activists, who are becoming a force in U.S. politics, want the federal government out of their lives except when it comes to creating jobs,” the wire notes wryly.

“More than 90 percent of Tea Party backers interviewed in a new Bloomberg National Poll say the U.S. is verging more toward socialism than capitalism, the federal government is trying to control too many aspects of private life and more decisions should be made at the state level,” it adds. “At the same time, 70 percent of those who sympathize with the Tea Party, which organized protests this week against President Barack Obama’s health-care overhaul, want a federal government that fosters job creation.”

“The ideas that find nearly universal agreement among Tea Party supporters are rather vague,” J. Ann Selzer, the pollster who created the survey, is quoted as saying. “You would think any idea that involves more government action would be anathema, and that is just not the case.”

And it turns out when it comes to putting money in Americans’ pockets — Tea Partiers aren’t so opposed to government intervention, or tend to look the other way.

“Fewer than 10 percent say the Veterans Administration is definitely socialist, 12 percent identify management of national parks and museums, and 36 percent say expanding Medicare for the elderly, Medicaid for the poor and Social Security amount to socialism,” Bloomberg notes.

Even 35 percent don’t see Social Security as socialist: 65 percent said Social Security was “either definitely or sort of socialism.” But 47 percent still wanted to keep it under government control (and just 53 percent supported Social Security privatization).

The Bloomberg poll (available here in PDF) was conducted Mar. 19-22 and included 1,002 Americans over the age of 18. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

This just in: TeaPartiers Can't Find Own Assholes to Wipe.

Or, TeaParty Unable to Locate http://www.Dictionary.com on Internet.

  • TCB

the tea party is not a party it's a fan club. Tea party activist are simply expressing the emotions of the nut jobs that fired them up. 1/3 think Medicare/Medicaid are not socialist (government) programs. This clearly points out that they don't know what they want just that their pissed off and ignorant of the facts they are supposedly pissed off about. This is what frightens me most is that the ignorant are finding a voice.

  • TCB

They may not be able to find it but we sure as hell can and we really need to do a broad spectrum wiping. These cling-ons need to be removed and flushed so this country can move on beyond the ignorant results of our glorious socialist educations system. Morons every last one of them

  • m3t

It's funny. Some of the things that the Fox-Tea-Party know are good… are socialist… yet so few of them are even able to recognise socialism when socialism benefits those that they feel deserve support.

The reason is simply because they've been indoctrinated to think ALL forms of socialism are bad and represent a handout to lazy people.

This is why they have difficulty identifying it, because the word socialism has been warped into something sinister (to a ridiculous extreme) by Fox “News”… and we all know the Tea-Party lunatics LOVE Fox “News”.

Socialism has pros and cons, but without socialist entities and initiatives implemented, America would be a real dysfunctional mess right now: ignorant, uneducated people, no transit system for ambulances, no fire department.

Never mind this “death panel” horsesh!t… without socialism, hundreds of people would needlessly die every day.

  • icenine

And 99.9% of Tea-gaggers are dumb hicks that wouldn't know an ideology if it hit them upside their walnut-sized brains. They are permanent emotional infants. Whatever is good for me, me, me is good for the country and the morally correct choice as well. Happy coincidence that.

  • edwards_com

The GOP own the Tea Potters whether they like it or not.

  • OldAtlantic

Tea Partier is the public relations spin version. The correct term is tea baggers. It is the name they chose themselves and accurately describes them. There is another anatomical/sexual term that describes them slightly better but is considered less polite.

  • missskeptic

    Ooooh! Nice imagery!

  • ckerst

But if the government creates jobs won't they be socialist jobs paid for directly or indirectly with government money? Surely the teabaggers wouldn't take a socialist job and socialist money. These people are nothing but spoiled 8 year olds stomping their feet and demanding that “I want what I want”. They make me sick.

  • ziply

Ignorance is its own godawful reward. This is what we get when children are not taught civics, basic economics, history, and the first shred of skeptical thinking. “Faith-based” facts, garbage in, garbage out.

  • fiftysomething

I think racism and greed are what all tea party members have in common. A lot of what brought them together was the election of a black president. They are all against anyone getting a helping hand except themselves. If they don't want to accept majority rule, they should move some place that doesn't have it and let us run our country the way our founding fathers intended. These people are more terrorists than patriot and would like our country to be run by religious zealots much the same as some of the mideast countries. If they are going to act like Timothy McVeigh, they should be prosecuted as terrorists because that's what they are.

  • kiboshki

Well said. And not only is it a lack of education that feeds this dizzying maelstrom of stupidity, it's a lack of respect for education, and any form of honest reflection or intellectualism in general.

Attention Tea Partiers! Please take note:

“You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.” –Harlan Ellison

  • godistwaddle

  • Pennsylvanianne

Agreed! The Tea Party members said they were against runaway spending, yet said nothing when George W. Bush led us into two costly, deficit-spending wars, only forming after Obama was elected. The Teabaggers said they were against high taxes, yet Obama cut taxes for more than 90 percent of Americans. The only possible reason this organization exists is because all of these white people can't stand the idea of an intelligent black President who was left the unenviable task of cleaning up the mess Bush left. Now these people who decry socialism hope Obama is the next FDR and creates jobs! I hope the FBI finds whoever is causing this damage and sending these terroristist messages and prosecutes them to the fullest extent of the law.

  • AnzaSummer

OMG! ROTFLMAO! Thanks for the laugh! That was good!

  • AnzaSummer

“The reason is simply because they've been indoctrinated to think ALL forms of socialism are bad and represent a handout to lazy people.”

Lazy people = non-white people. It's not socialism if it helps them. It's socialism if it helps “those lazy people”.

  • AnzaSummer

The problem is that they are out of their minds with anger and hatred over what they've been told by Rush, et al. Sadly, none of what they are angry at is real. Unfortunately, their anger and hatred is very real.

  • All Aboard the USS Failboat

Conservatives typically want “the government to create jobs” by enacting tax cuts. Thats not an “interventionist policy”. How exaclty does one “intervene” against their own “intervention”, as would be the case with a government that already over-taxes and over-regulates? The idea is to reduce the total amount of government intervention in the economy.

This article is about nothing more than poor poll wording. You guys want to make hay over this, grasping for an opportunity to call “tea partiers” nasty things like “dumb rednecks”. Well, this here “dumb redneck” employs 12 people. And being the “dumb redneck” I am, I would love nothing more than to see the net cost of employment go down without having to reduce employee compensation.

You can all resume your self-congratulatory name calling. In the meantime, I'll get back to work trying to figure out how to maintain a small enterprise in this hostile business environment.

  • anonymous

Is it coincidence that the tea-pot in the pic has very sperm-like qualities to it?

  • OldAtlantic

Well teabagger the government is not overtaxing or overregulating. The banksters were deregulated and lo and behold they ran the whole thing off of the rails. All of you clowns believe in regulation, just for other people than yourselves. Laws against theft, fraud and murder are regulation of behavior. Laws against drug use, drunken driving and speeding are regulation. Businesses left to their own devices have proven again and again that they will put employees and customers in dangerous situations and attempt to defraud them. I have yet to meet a salesboy who will not lie to make a sale or just for the hell of it. Every business regulation has been provoked by bad behavior by business when they were left alone. And without regulation the market does not keep it under control. If businesspeople or salesboys had even a glimmer of ethics government regulation would be unnecessary. Unfortunately that has been proven wrong over and over and over again.

  • texasaggie

Your comment about “a government that already over-taxes and over-regulates” is standard boilerplate for the right wing, but is a perfect example of what Ziply was saying about “Faith based facts.” There is no way that any sane individual could look at our system in the US and claim that anyone is over-taxed or that the government over-regulates anything. Our economy is in the toilet because the SEC and the Fed weren't doing their jobs of regulating. People in WVa are dying because the EPA isn't doing its job of regulating. Our national deficit is to a large part where it is because of Bush's tax cuts (and also because of his unfunded wars and Big Pharm giveaways.) so it is rather difficult to complain that anyone is overtaxed. There are lots of people, however, who are UNDERtaxed. The hedge managers who pay at about half the rate of their secretaries comes to mind. Paris Hilton, the heirs of Sam Walton and numerous similar people who are filthy rich without having done a blessed thing to earn their lucre also come to mind.

  • gypski

Just curious, do you pay more then minimum wage that is an actual living wage?

  • ignatzfattis

    Stupid stupid stupid

  • HurlyBurly

And how is your wonderful new President cleaning up the mess he was left by the filthy war criminal Bush?

by staying the Bush course in Iraq?
by renewing the Bush Patriot Act?
    by continuing Bush torture programs?
    by NOT closing GITMO?
by protecting Bush and Cheney from torture investigation and prosecution?
by expanding the war to Pakistan?
by escalating the war in Afghanistan?
by setting records in one year for drone attacks, dead civilians in Afghanistan, dead US GI's in Afghanistan,
by taking Blackwater out of Iraq and giving them MORE money and responsibility in Afghanistan?
and lastly by brazenly admitting to the use of drones to kill Americans on foreign soil without trial or any due process. Targeted assassinations………even Bush didn't admit to that.

Obama is more Bush. Obama apologists are nothing but advocates for more Bush fascism. Shame on you people!

I too am disappointed Obama hasn't done more. He has spent an awful lot of time on healthcare reform; hope he soon takes on the other issues you mention. But what does any of this have to do with Ann Coulter? I am confused: just because I MENTION Obama is intelligent you equate me with Coulter? She hates Obama! I didn't apologize for his actions in the least; go back and read my post and stop reading too much into it.

  • All Aboard the USS Failboat

Can you answer this question honestly: Have you ever run a business?

Do you know what hoops your employer has to jump thru to keep you employed? Or his associated costs?

I dont think you do understand or have any basis for understanding, otherwise you wouldnt be trying to interpret my comments by viewing them thru a political filter by refering to them as “standard boilerplate”. Is it “standard boilerplate” if the comments are true? The sun rises in the east– thats not “boilerplate”, its simple fact.

As for expecting the Fed to do anything but protect its own interests, good luck. The Fed is a government imposed monopoly, created and maintained for the profit of a very tiny minority, and the sole reason for our exaggerated cycles of credit contraction and credit expansion.

The credit market stands at a current total of $59 trillion. That is $59 trillion in actual debt that must first be serviced before we can experience any sort of economic growth. That translates roughly into a requirement to issue $4 trillion in new debt a single year before we can see a single iota of economic growth– just to keep current interest paid.

The problem with sub-prime and other aspects of the financial collapse boils down to the problem of always needing to expand the credit system to avoid collapse. To have perpetual expansion, you must make increasingly risky loans to increasingly less worthy borrowers. To have any growth you have to create asset bubbles to simply put enough cash into the economy to overcome the interest overhang.

The blame for this rests squarely on the Fed's shoulders. A diversified monetary system would be able to absorb the shocks from the collapse or contraction of a single component within the system. In a singular monetary system, we all suffer, and all feel the shocks when the system fails.

If you guys want to keep swallowing the left-right party line, you will never see any beneficial reform.

  • LaLaLaLaLa

I too am disappointed Obam hasn't done more??

I think you might want to read that one again annie. This isn't about Obama not doing enough, it is about him doing too much, too much right wing extremism.

Bush pissed in our water jug. Obama is not emptying it slowly, he is pissing in it too, at a greater rate than Bush did. Still the Obama devoted insist that Obama is emptying it. Un freakin believable!

  • Independant Thinker

What jobs do they want created?? This article was very vauge & the only hard fact that's listed is “just 53% support the privatization of social security”…. JUST?? last time I checked 53% was the majority
There's no sources of reference given besides “a new Bloomberg National Poll” which is vauge in itself.
This article seems to be nothing more than an attempt to ruffle feathers & twist words. Do more investigation & check facts! Don't just believe what's posted. MYSELF INCLUDED!

Do you see a difference in the 2 below??? DECIDE FOR YOURSELF!

  • Dave

I really think when you ask teabaggers if they think government should do more to create jobs, they really think you're asking “should the government cut taxes?”

    Period.

To these people, supply side economics is still the rule of law and “create jobs” is another phrase for “cut taxes for the wealthy.” They really think that the only way a company would hire more people is because they have lower taxes.

They've been trained to ignore demand and focus on the amount of money that is being kept by business owners. In reality, companies hire more employees when there is demand for the product they create; something that doesn't happen just because taxes on the wealthy is low.

I’m just going to cut and paste what I have said:

“I totally agree with you. Prior to the early 1970s, welfare was accepted. But someone brainstormed that welfare was a black problem and white America turned against it because it was perceived as not benefiting them. I won’t talk about how the Government helped white Americans move out of big crowded cities after WWII and said FU to black Americans.”

It’s only socialism if the job goes to a “person of color”.

  • SD Dude

Am I missing something? When I look at the PDF of the poll, it looks like the results are from all respondents, not just tea party folks. Which makes the numbers look a lot more reasonable.

  • sgf

WRONG. I protested GWB and I am a member of the Tea Party Movement. Lefties like you think you're soooooo smart, but you're really a bunch of idiots who lack critical thinking. I was a liberal until I opened my eyes and realized those policies I once supported are unsustainable and liberal groups are actually more hypocritical than the side they attack. Obama and the rest of the Dem leadership have destroyed the party for me.

  • Mark

Look at the face of any teatard, say, on UTube. The Teatard party is the result of willful ignorance.

  • ralphbentley

Here's what happened: About 10 years ago someone noticed asshats like G.Gordon Liddy were making money. By making stuff up on the radio with the help of call-in listenrs they generated enough material for cleverly-named books which lo, found a market!

This is what the tea party is. The market for Rush and Beck and Coulter's books.

That's it. That's all it is. Follow the money. Our significant portion of our economy is now based of peddeling bullshit to the masses. Fox “News” indeed.

  • Mark

Liberals, by definition, have their eyes open.

  • Mark

Awesome quote. None of us should be subjected to uninformed opinions.

  • Mark

I would like the Teatards to explain why they aren't going after the corporations that brought the economy to its knees, why they aren't railing against the CEOs who awarded themselves millions in bonuses after their malfeasance/failures, why they aren't complaining to THEM about not creating jobs, and why they won't protest banks who refuse to release credit money to businesses who need it.

Really. Why are they going after the gov't when it was UNLIMITED, UNFETTERED, UNREGULATED CAPITALISM THAT BROUGHT US DOWN.

  • Hooker

It would be interesting to poll those who reside in insane anylums across the country. The pollsters could ask the inhabitants the same questions that are asked of members of the so-called Tea Party. It's befuddling because you're employing something that the Tea Baggers lack: critical thinking skills. Dick Armey and friends did a fine bit of market analysis and came to the conclusion that the big money comes from low information voters who have no capacity to think beyond irritation, frustration, or rage. It's all the same for them. Associating poverty, “socialism” and instability with government functions only hits the chord when someone else gets the goods.

When a tea bagger thinks that the feds may be able to open up a good paying job for him (or her), then they can see the benefit in what government can do. But again, that's an emotional response, and not a rational one. And that's the rub, because at ANY time, that tea bagging employee through government funding could be told to fear or be enraged at something else, and the whole process may happen all over again.

But the tea baggers have been so dumbed down by the worst elements of our culture that they're not likely to comprehend the pattern– that they're being duped, they're being someone's lackey.

That they're comprised of less educated individuals (Idiots) is hardly a surprise for such morons are easily inflamed even when they don't know what it is they are angry about. “Sure, we hate the government but create jobs for us.” They're too stupid to understand they can't have it both ways. The RePIGnicans, as usual, don't have a GD clue as to the rage they are stoking, but they will, when it's too late. This is not the USA of the 1950's, and clinging to the past is no reason to deny the future. Tea Party = MORONS. Grow up.

Last time I checked, using their argument, the Constitution does not grant jobs as a right. Unless you are a member of congress, a supreme court justice, or the President, the constitution is quite silent about jobs. These medicaid receiving, welfare riding, scum of our country don't want jobs. If they had jobs they wouldn't be out protesting all week long.

  • icenine

And don't you touch their Medicare! They want government outta their lives.

  • chriswis

Well, I think the simple answer is, as Eisenhower said, they are stupid.

  • TaterSalad

Actually, we want a person who is was born in the United States “first” to be a President.

The pieces of the puzzle are coming together. May14, 2010 will be a start.

We, the United States is being held hostage and here is why:

  • GOP stands for Gay Old Party

“Keep yer stinkin' liberal socialist hands off'n mah Medicare!”

These dumbass teabaggers need to be rounded up and sterilized for the betterment of mankind.

  • jimbeaux

Hey TaterTroll – thanks for the cryptic quote – can you interpret for those of us who don't have special “Decoder Rings”.

  • jimbeaux

The pic of the warped teapot does get the idea across – but it would be even more realistic if it had a crack down the side – as in “Crack Pot”.

  • Vendetta

    Scrotes?

  • kwertie

“Keep the government out of my Medicare!”

    Heh heh.

  • shag11

I think it actually started with Ronald Reagan's racist Southern Strategy, where middle-class and poor white men were sold a pack of lies about why they were not able to advance. In actuality is was coporation doing the usual: paying for this propaganda with one hand, and stealing the country blind with the other. Teabaggers are just an extension of that game.

  • Savantster

    tea BAGGERS!

stop calling them partiers! that's FRAMING, and they win when they sanitize their hate and ignorance. THEY picked the “tea baggers” name, MAKE THEM LIVE WITH IT.

  • kiboshki

I've done a little hunting around and can't find a good “in your face!” example of a “conservative” referring to teabaggers. Do you happen to have any links to such? (speech transcript, Repub politician quotes, etc, – preferably text since i have a *slow* connection, but videos ok, too)

It would be nice to have something like that in reserve to throw out there when challenged on it.

The same tea baggers that want big govt. to cater to corp. not give us any of our money back are also on social security, medicare, unemployment(plenty of time to go to parties if you dont have a job but that unemployment benefit, I deserve , you dont.) they use fire, police, post office all govt. run and needed for its citizens..Most civilized countries give free universial health care with low drugs prices to its citizens but not U.S.They are really upset because Obama is black and white, rich, KKK have ruled for 30 years ..Well ,get with the times, guys Everyone in america has ancestors from another country and we are all equal according to our consitution which is why america is so diverse and so great..Stop the hate guys grow up..
