The Yes Men call O’Keefe, Breitbart ‘sad and pathetic’ for targeting ACORN

The ends justify the means, say The Yes Men, but only as long as you’re going after the right people.

The duo’s latest movie The Yes Men Fix The World, out on DVD April 1, chronicles the real-life efforts of anti-globalization activists Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum to expose corporate malfeasance in unorthodox ways.

“What we do is pass ourselves off as representatives of big corporations we don’t like,” Bonanno explains in the film. “We make fake websites, then wait for people to accidentally invite us to conferences.”

They’ve shined a spotlight on controversial practices of powerful companies like Exxon-Mobil and Halliburton. One of their most prominent hoaxes occurred in 2004, when Bichlbaum posed as a spokesman for Dow Chemical on BBC News television and — under false pretenses — accepted “full responsibility” for a disaster its subsidiary created in Bhopal, India.

Such tactics have now been emulated by conservatives such as James O’Keefe, who famously went undercover and unveiled the dodgy dealings of some ACORN employees last year, the video clips of which were vigorously promoted by writer and publisher Andrew Breitbart.

“For O’Keefe and Breitbart to be targeting ACORN is incredibly sad and pathetic,” Bonanno told Raw Story. “Most of its members are lower-income home owners, so these are model Americans — pull themselves up by their bootstraps type of people — people who are often very poor.”

In a videotaped conversation with blogger Mike Stark at last month’s CPAC convention, Breitbart, probed about the morality of O’Keefe’s actions, pointed to The Yes Men as an example of progressive activists using similarly questionable means to attain their goals.

But it’s not his and O’Keefe’s tactics that The Yes Men take issue with; it’s who they’re taking aim at, and the now-extinct community group didn’t deserve the treatment, Bonanno alleged.

“It’s why you’re lying and who’s gaining and who’s losing as a result,” he said. “There are liars and there are assholes. What James O’Keefe is doing is making a lot of lower-income people lose, unfortunately. And it’s supported by a bunch of very nasty, mean-spirited people.”

“A lie itself isn’t necessarily bad,” Bonanno continued, drawing out the difference between The Yes Men and individuals like O’Keefe. “We lie in order to criticize people who are abusing their power. They lie in order to humiliate and take out people who are at the receiving end of power.”

The Yes Men have been chastised as “world-renowned troublemakers” as well as “sick, twisted and cruel” beings by mainstream news organizations. In their latest of two films, the duo deplores the “free-market cult” they claim is centered around “letting greed solve the problem.”

They seek to comfort the afflicted by actively afflicting the comforted. And that’s the opposite of what anti-ACORN activists are doing, Bonanno purported. “By targeting ACORN, they’re targeting people who are victims of a very nasty power dynamic. So, I think it’s a mean thing to do.”

Bonanno found it “amazing” how Congress insists on taking aim at groups like ACORN over “a few bad apples” when large defense contractors, for instance, have committed far worse transgressions on a broader and more damaging level and walked away unscathed.

Ultimately, Bonanno concluded that lies and trickery are helpful to fight the establishment in an age where corporations wield unprecedented power and where “the political middle is being pushed further and further and further to the right.”

Thank you for your book which I received today. I will waste no time in starting to read it.

Apologies to whichever literary critic actually said something like that. I stole your line.

More of the “victim”, less of the truth. For a $28 book to go for $4.95 new speaks volumes about the substance. Yep, it’ll go number 1, and should make for low humor. It’ll also screw up the sales of authors who really write well written books. Dollar general in less than four months.

The same way I’m sure someone ‘suggested’ to her that Katie Couric ‘butchered the tapes’ to produce ‘gotcha’ moments while editing out her more “substantive” comments, not one of which she can bring forward as evidence. Because there were none.

Beside, she only did the Oprah interview because, like all guests, Oprah pays them some money, and that’s what it’s all about for Palin: $$. She quit her job as Gov so she’s getting no money there, she has a house, a family, an unwed daughter, a grandchild, and a retarded baby to take care of.

wow logic from corporate news, interesting.

does no one find it funny how the criminals of government usually end up on fox news as commentators or people who give opinions?

Karl Rove and Oliver North are just but a few of many.

How Fox News can have treasonous traitors on as news commentators is stunning.

Oh it hasn’t been released yet.

A quick googling reveals it will be released Nov. 17th.
‘Daredevil’ was #1 at the box office for a week too, and that movie (and Ben Aflleck) sucked ass.

RIGHT THIS MOMENT her book is available from half.com for $9.01, +S/H of course.
    http://search.half.ebay.com/Going-Rogue_W0QQmZbooks
At the bottom of that same page there are two copies on auction whose high bids are $16.50.

“Terrorism is when you not just murder someone but you’re murdering someone to coerce or intimidate a government or society,” Turley told Maddow

That means that hate crimes are terrorism. That means that killing abortion doctors are terrorism. The only reason why they’re not considered terrorism by the conservative press is that conservatives are far more likely to commit those acts.

I had heard that a lot of mega stupid stuff was withheld from the Couric interviews. As bad as the interviews were, they shined them up as much as they could to put her in the best light. I would love to see the outtakes, and if in fact she did say anything intelligent.

Kinda vague there OA. The interstate Highway System changed society in an affirmative way & some land owners had to be coerced to surrender land to change society. Was that terrorism. It was definitely affirmative action by the Federal Government.
Also how does calling an individual a bigot degrade an entire Government?
I am not disagreeing with you OA I am requesting an expansion.

Funny how people seem to be convicted prior to ever standing trial in this country nowadays. How come news reporters were reporting shots being fired in completely different parts of the base as much as three hours after this guy was shot? How come initial news reports spoke of there being several shooters, with the rest of them apparently being “released.” How could one guy armed with two civilian handguns physically shoot almost 50 people without some highly-trained (though unarmed) soldiers, at least, tackling him from behind while he was reloading? How many rounds do civilian handguns hold, anyway? 30? I thought it was usually eight, or at the most–ten.

I understand what your saying, but I disagree about how people who commit hate crimes aren’t trying to “change policy”. If you kill a man because he’s gay, you’re sending a message to the gay society to illicit a fearful reaction. The message that openly gay people should be killed. The goal being to drive gays out of the general society. That’s a policy change. I don’t know if the people who commit hate crimes are conscious of what they’re really doing, but I say that doesn’t matter.

Hate crimes are meant to intimidate and stimulate fear in the group the criminals are trying to terrorize. That’s why I call it terrorism. I would like to do away with hate crimes and instead treat them like terrorism. Hopefully, after being a conservative buzz word for so many years, it may make some of these conservatives think twice.

Yeah, they would have to put what is probably the single, most high-capacity handgun in the world in his hand…no, make that one in each hand. What happened to the initial news reports that M-16 rifles were being used, and possibly even a sniper rifle?

    Dead ticket, yeah.

It’s sad she didn’t run with my first idea for her, “Gardening with the Governor” where she has an HG network show that opens with a view of Russia over the hedge. She could show off legendarily huge veggie species and cute gloves.

I think her publisher is trying now to redefine her. They need the marketplace to get past the run for veep and redress her so they know how to proceed. GOP regulars aren’t playing along. They want her away from the party, oddly, I think, because they fear her.
Imagine if Palin was to pull the party up from the ashes, dust it off and capture the hearts of…well, somebody. She rises to power and divides their female base, ostensibly between the sentient and, well, limestone.
Then, in a ball of flame, she burns out and takes with her the GOP’s chance of getting a female in the White House.
Sarah will know what she’s about once her publisher has analyzed the book sales and read all the reviews. Don’t worry, she’s not going away any time soon.

Wouldn’t provide very much heat. “432 pages”

Actually that means there’s about 420 pages of content, you know how books always have several blank pages in front and behind, for whatever reason.

Although 420 is a very special number to me, it may be even more special for her, considering it’s legal in Alaska to have up to an ounce of pot in your home.

Now that we have an official nay-sayer, this B.S. becomes an official “debate”. The idea that Hasan IS a terrorist becomes legitimized as soon as someone with credibility actually dignifies the claim with an actual counter-argument. This is such a tired strategy. And here we go, falling for it again, endlessly.

By Turley’s own definition–”murdering someone to coerce or intimidate a government or society”–killing an abortion doctor IS DEFINITELY an act of terrorism. The killer in such cases wants more than simply for one doctor to stop performing abortions…he wants ALL abortion doctors to stop out of fear of being killed themselves.

Palin is a psychopathic liar working this thing for every drop … she had no business accepting the offer to run as VP. Any normal person with her lack of experience would have respectively turned it down …. but she saw it as a way to advance her career and grab everything she could get … I don’t for one second believe she has any interest at heart other than whatever will serve her. IN that respect she is at home in the Republican party and in politics for that matter.

BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts state senator got a ride home from police after acquaintances said he was too drunk to drive – about 13 hours before he was involved in a hit-and-run accident.

A Cambridge, Mass., police report on Sen. Anthony Galluccio says officers were called to a gas station about 4:40 a.m. Oct. 4 after receiving a call about an intoxicated man.

The station attendant told police he believed Galluccio was too drunk to drive. Police say another man said he was trying to drive Galluccio home but couldn’t find his house.

Police say they drove Galluccio home.

About 13 hours later, a vehicle driven by Galluccio rear-ended a minivan. Galluccio has said he fled because he panicked.

Galluccio declined to comment Monday, citing the ongoing legal process.

This woman’s the worst kind of idiot – convinced she’s correct no matter how clearly she is told otherwise, short-sighted, bull-headed, pigshit-stubborn — in all, a veritable farm medley of undesirable traits, at least for political office. Perhaps she needs to spend more time with her husband, to remind him to get her fitted for a smart white jacket (with extra-long sleeves).

That photo next the the story is absolutely illuminating. Rep. Bachmann is beginning to morph into Lady Cassandra O’Brien from the Doctor Who Series which was revived in 2005.

    This from the wiki:

According to Cassandra, her parents were the last to be buried “in its soil”. She had been born a male on Earth and lived on the edge of the “Los Angeles Crevasse”. Married several times, her life had been extended through a series of 708 plastic surgery operations, until she was nothing but a piece of skin stretched onto a frame, with eyes and a mouth, connected to a brain in a designer jar filled with a preserving solution below. The skin had to be constantly moisturized to keep it from drying out. As the rest of the human race had long since either interbred with other intelligent species or altered themselves to the point even they don’t call themselves human anymore (references are made to ‘New Humans’, ‘Proto-humans’ and ‘Digi-humans’), Cassandra considered herself the last “pure” human, and all others as ‘mongrels’. Rose Tyler characterized her as a “bitchy trampoline” and referred to her as “Michael Jackson”.

What an indictment of the political intellegence of Americans, that obvious, not very bright, scum of the universe liars and fools such as Palin and Bachmann have the passionate followings they have. I’d like to laugh it off – but I can’t. We may be in for a serious challenge to demorcracy and the country we love.

I thought it had already been proved that O’Keefe did not represent himself as a pimp with a whore at the offices, but as a dear brother trying to help his sister. The costumes were just that, costumes that were never worn to nor seen by ACORN workers. He is a fraud, pure and simple and the conservatives patted him on the back for the lies he (and they) spread. ACORN should sue him, they could probably win for false representation as he had spliced in ALL the pimp/whore stuff.

  • mindboggeling

James o'keefe is a spoiled little punk targeting a program that helps poor people. WTF? Obviously he doesn't have enough to do in his little christian world. This guy tried to bug a Senator's phones and he gets off? If he didn't have daddy's money he would still be in jail where he belongs. Sooner or later some one will come along and wipe that smirk off his stupid face! I hope it will be painful both physically and emotionally! This guy is a budding beck, limbaugh, hannity. The little jerk said he would get off and he pretty much did. I hope he got a cell for the short time he was in jail with big bubba!

  • RoadScholar

I think O'Keefe is suffering from Tiny Member Syndrome.

  • jimbo92107

But O'Keefe is much worse than that. O'Keefe deliberately edited his video tapes to hide the truth and to create a false impression of how ACORN workers reacted to his disguises. The Yes Men did not deliberately misrepresent who their victims thought they were seeing, thus the reactions on video were valid.

In the end, O'Keefe's main goal was not merely to deceive his victims, but to deceive his audience. The Yes Men seek to reveal the true attitudes of corporate assholes; O'Keefe exploited editing tricks to conjure a false impression of honest ACORN workers.

“… Bonanno found it “amazing” how Congress insists on taking aim at groups like ACORN over “a few bad apples” when large defense contractors, for instance, have committed far worse transgressions on a broader and more damaging level and walked away unscathed. …”

that congress acted in nano time, to me is the most amazing part of this whole thing,

  • TaterSalad
  • H.P. Loathecraft

O'Keefe hasn't 'gotten off' yet, though the felony charges are now reduced to misdemeanors. If he gets caught trespassing again in government facilities after being charged once he may be in more serious trouble.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Is it it just me or is Breitbart really, really ugly? Look at the slitty little pie-hole in the middle of that porky face.

  • isodore

Until O'Keefe releases the unedited tapes, I think Raw Story (as well as the rest of the media covering this) should refrain from stating any ACORN workers had “dodgy dealings” of any kind. The so called proof was tampered with to create a predetermined narrative. We in fact do not know what really happened in those offices. Right now I think that O'Keefe should be in court for libel, unless he shows us that he didn't in fact lie in his videos to slander ACORN.

  • Big AL

Breitbart is coming apart at the seams. He has so little credibility now that he has to go on Faux to be heard. Breitbart and James O'keefe are going down in history as the biggest liars ever. Wait till the lawsuits start. Watch how fast they drop and how far they fall. See Tom Delay for a good example.

They may be sad and pathetic, but they accomplished their goal. Thanks to a cowardly Democratic party, ACORN has been forced into bankruptcy. Though they were cleared of the charges, and a judge ordered the government to start funding them again, they were forced out of business. Who will suffer for the loss of ACORN, the Democrats, that's who. This agency helped with voter registration of low income individuals, who primarily vote Democratic. So the spineless Democrats just made their road to electoral success that much harder. You can bet your last dollar, Republicans would've never caved the way the Dems did.

  • Buzz Windrip

I used to worry about this, but now console myself with the idea that the networks are still in place, the people who care will still do the good work, and the smaller, lower-profile groups will still get the grants.

And while the wingers were busy declaring “mission accomplished”, their opponents simply made the warfare less symmetrical.

    Sound familiar?

  • Terrible

The Yes Men are not anything like the criminal O'Keefe!!! They don't falsify their information. They are honest in the presentation of their work. What they present is what they observed. O'Keefe is anything but honest in anything. The presentation giving by O'Keefe in his video was a complete misrepresentation of what had happened.

  • bufftrucker

    DennyCrane,

    Thank you.

  • http://reconstitution.us/rcnew jollyroger

It shouldn't be forgotten that O'Keefe is also known to hand out white supremacist literature.

He targeted ACORN, but politics may have been a secondary concern for the little Fuhrer.

  • RadicalCaveman

It's about time for ACORN to launch a massive lawsuit against not only those bastards but also the New York Times and other prestigious media outfits who did this to them and then refused to correct their errors for months and months. With the money they're owed, they could start up again and kick some serious ass.

  • jeff

now that health care reform legislation has been signed into law-can't o'keefe stay on his parents insurance until he's 26?

  • cheryl2

If he ends up in jail I am sure he will need it!

  • michaelvalentine

He will more likely get his own Fox Noise show.

  • shag11

The right-wing always targets poor people, women, gays, immigrants. These are the people they get some white males to believe that are the reason for their plight in life. Hence, they get ginned-up and they are ready to slime, attack and kill, when in fact, it's the people that they follow that are behind the schemes..

  • carol h.

O'Keefe has a wealthy, and powerful father. This jerk will not face jail time. Public service for a month is about it. And he will still be strutting around like a junior GOP wannabe. And for the GOP this man will be a hero. Hello Fox TV. Can you say new young commentator?

  • Turnip

Are the young of the rich, . . you know. Officially, a protected class?

  • Jeffery

Memorize Shag11's comment to understand how the Republicans motivate their troops.

  • scytherius

    LOL Oh NO doubt!!!!

  • scytherius

Speaking as a former Defense atty/Prosecutor . . . they really didn't have the evidence for a felony.

  • chester77

I'll bet that 10x more Americans have heard of O'Keefe and this single prank of his on ACORN than any single one of the high profile, far more difficult to pull off pranks of the Yes Men. And the Yes Men pranks are drop dead hilarious, some of the funniest shit I have ever seen. Remember when they passed themselves off as the U.S. chamber of commerce and announced they were reversing their position on global warming at a big press conference? That was incredible and punked all mainstream media, too, for a little while anyway. Makes O'Keefe's prank look like a freakin bike ride. But who do we all know about? Some liberal media we have here. FTW

Acorn was 99% self funded. The claim that Acorn cost taxpayers billions is total bullshit. Their customer base was the under served and urban lower economic classes. They brought private money into play to rehabilitate blighted urban neighborhoods. If bemoaning the demise of this honest effort based upon the lies of these 2 assholes is populist, well, sign me the fuck up. I suggest you take a little more effort to educate yourself Opossum, because you are way off-base here.

'Bonanno found it “amazing” how Congress insists on taking aim at groups like ACORN over “a few bad apples” when large defense contractors, for instance, have committed far worse transgressions on a broader and more damaging level and walked away unscathed.'

(the reason is simple: ACORN didn't have thousands of well-funded corporate lobbyists doling out favours and tonnes of cash to the Congress-slaves…)
