Maddow to Sen. Brown: ‘You need to stop lying’ about nonexistent Senate run

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has drawn a line in the sand and told Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown that he has to “stop lying” about claims that she’s planning to run against him for Senate.

In an aggressive monologue in which she asserted at least a dozen times that the recently-elected Republican senator is lying about her political aspirations, Maddow declared that she will not stop taking the senator to task over the issue because “I want politicians to stop doing things like this, to stop making stuff up to run against instead of running against actual not- made-up problems that our country really has.”

For the past week, Maddow and Brown have been in a war of words over the senator’s claim, based on little more than speculation on a blog, that the host of The Rachel Maddow Show plans to run for the Senate in Massachusetts in 2012. Despite repeated claims to the contrary, Maddow says, Brown continues to push the story in order to raise campaign funds.

She also responded to the senator’s claims that she continues to talk about the issue because “she’s trying to boost her ratings.”

“I’m boosting my ratings how, Senator? … I’m boosting my ratings by being the subject of a lie that you’re telling about me to raise money? I didn’t do this, Senator. You did this. You dragged me into this. You made something up that is not true. You have such a lack of respect for your conservative donor base around the country that you don`t care if what you`re telling them is true or not.”

She went on to accuse Sen. Brown of lying, once again, over his assertions that her producers had not tried to contact him for an interview.

“Senator Brown, you’re lying. My office called you multiple times a day, every day, over and over and over and over again to try to set this right. I will show you the phone records if you care. You are lying when you say that it didn’t happen,” Maddow said.

“I’m trying to increase the cost of you lying so that you`ll stop doing it,” she concluded. “Stop doing it.”

GOP=Generates Only Prevarications. They're all pro-ignorance, pathological liar, criminals.

  • bonkerslite

What a surprise that Scotty Too Hotty is a degenerate liar like many of his GOoPer bretheren. Not. Even less surprising is the continuing braindead denial of the GOP constituents who continue to send people like this donations for any reason.

  • theylie

Sad and true. Lying is what they do, it's why the Murdoch channel does what it does.

  • ignatzfattis

I would advise Rachel to stop covering this issue -she is responding the way they want her to -I think she is falling for a trick. Brown is not smart enough to come up with something this crafty -maybe he's getting help from Rove.

BLUEPRINT THAT TODAY'S REPUBLICAN PARTY IS FOLLOWING RELIGIOUSLY……

“Propaganda must always address itself to the broad masses of the people. (…) All propaganda must be presented in a popular form and must fix its intellectual level so as not to be above the heads of the least intellectual of those to whom it is directed. (…) The art of propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and appeal to the hearts of the national masses. The broad masses of the people are not made up of diplomats or professors of public jurisprudence nor simply of persons who are able to form reasoned judgment in given cases, but a VACILLATING CROWD OF HUMAN CHILDREN WHO ARE CONSTANTLY WAVERING BETWEEN ONE IDEA AND ANOTHER. (…) The great majority of a nation is so feminine in its character and outlook that its thought and conduct are ruled by sentiment rather than by sober reasoning. This sentiment, however, is not complex, but simple and consistent. It is not highly differentiated, but has only the negative and positive notions of love and hatred, right and wrong, truth and falsehood.” – Adolph Hitler from Mein Kampf

everyone should start calling these liars for the liars they are.
    nicely done, Maddow.

  • geo1671

All politicians are liars. Most senators and Congressman, after 1 1/2 terms become multi-millionair$. Nice houses, pensions, holidays, best health care, girls on the side, on on and on.What gives with us saps?

  • ninepipes

MS. Maddow, please leave the poor Senator alone with his dillusions, after all he is republican and they cannot help but to LIE. HH

  • kiboshki

Good on her. The rest of the media should be taking notes: when a politician– any politician– lies, they must be challenged.

And for eff's sake, media, just use the word “lie”. Not some stupid, candy-assed, pc-terminology like “exaggerated”, “factually challenged” or “sub-optimal truthiness”

Just say “lie.” L. I. E. It's short, sweet and to the point. And it's the truth.

  • smallbear

Stop lying. My Congressman is in his second term and is nowhere near getting rich. He does look a bit stressed lately, but that's to be expected. Just because you vote for liars, doesn't mean everyone does.

  • carol h.

Of course he is lying. You cannot be a Republican unless you can lie.

  • grandpamike1

Actually it is better for her to continue, maybe, hopefully maybe, some of the same people who elected Brown will figure out he is “Just a guy in pink shorts” all makeup, no brains.

Has the Northeast become the New South ?

The problem with the don't respond approach is Senator Brown is actually raising money off the name of Rachel Maddow and that's kinda weird on his part to do something like that where facts are trhown out the window. I think he needs to respond to it and make it an issue. She has a strong bullipulpit: she needs to use it to expose him.

  • ignatzfattis

It will become clear as soon as his voters look at their ballots that he's been lying. If she feels the need to cover the story I think daily reminder that it is a lie and a simple running tally of money raised by Brown using the lie would be more effective and would avoid her getting sucked into something undignified.

  • pathman25

It is my nature, said the scorpion……

the NE has always been racist… where have you been?

  • RH factor

Yeah this will definitely bite him. I'll take Maddow in any war with Mr. Truck boy

  • Dick Tucker

Fuck Senator- make her President right fucking now.

  • missskeptic

I saw this segment in its entirety and I lost track of how many times Rachel said the word “liar” or “you're lying” – it was too funny.

Brown picked the wrong far-left lesbian to piss off. Go Rachel!

Kiboshki, you are so right about her using the word “LIE”, not some less offensive-sounding word from the thesaurus. Brown isn't just lying, he's making money by lying.

  • jimbo92107

In a media pissing match between Brown and Maddow, I'm afraid the latter has the advantage in distance, volume and endurance.

On the other hand, I've been told that Brown looks good in nude photographs. By GOP standards, that may well make it a tie.

  • iRead

Mr. Franken, before he became a senator, wrote a book that rather directly addressed the issue of the GOP's truth-challenged character.

  • geo1671

SmallBear–lucky you if your conreaseman is not looking like a millionair.
How about checking his/her lying ability by asking–If }sreal hacks were behand the 911 attacks–what would you do to them? Come clean bear, all successful politicians are good liars. If yours is stressed out,it sure ain't his/her approval of attacking Iraq/Afghan. Only good politician is a dead one.
    Sorry bear–your a fool!

  • slappymagoo

Methinks Rachel doth protest so much.

Just admit you're running and get it over with.

    OK. Just kidding.
    I think.
    I hope.

  • conwaym

Maddow should just look into the camera and tell Senator Brown, “You think you can raise money for your campaign by lying about me? I'm calling your bluff and will now run against you. May the best person win.” Maddow beats this stupid little lying shit by 20 points and easily becomes the first female Senator from Massachusettes.

  • chriswis

And like most of his books, it was very amusing, and fairly informative.

  • justadumbfireman

When he WEARS shorts, that is.

  • outrageddem

the really sad part here is that Rachel should run against this liar – she would beat him hands down, AND be a much better senator than he ever could even dream of being. But her voice serves the USA just as well from where she sits now.

  • justadumbfireman

You mean Mr. Demurely, barely-hidden pubic hair?

  • Eyeball_Kid

Maddow, if not already, will begin to use Brown for HER purposes. Brown should know that Maddow is a hell of a lot smarter than he is. Maddow's blunt use of the term “liar” is simple and strong. She's a citizen of Massachusetts and she's a Democrat. She doesn't have to run for any political office, yet she can have a bigger single impact on Brown's defeat (against an undetermined Brown opponent) than nearly anyone in the state by STAYING ON MESSAGE that Brown is a liar. Brown either has to back away or she'll keep pounding away, because the message of LIAR won't resonate well with the independents that Brown has to attract.

Brown can't go on the offense by suing Maddow for libel because Brown is, in fact, lying. If Brown sues Maddow for the fact that Maddow is stating the obvious, Brown will be doubling down on self-abuse. Maddow is taking Brown to the mat because she can. And she's doing it with relish.

  • owl

Unfortunately Brown and GOP are pathological liars and you became the latest target. Glad you have ethics and morals Rachel.

  • ladygeekIT

And I'm glad he was able to defeat that idiot Norm Coleman and become my senator ;-)

  • TaterSalad

Who cares anything about Rachael Maddow. She has only got maybe 2 dozen loons watching her show anyway. The one that needs to be watched is Obama and his lying azz!

When Barack Hussein Obama heard that the American people wanted him to repeal his tyrannical government takeover of health care, he pompously smirked and self-righteously waved his finger in the air.

“Go for it,” he said. Those were his exact words. He added; “Be my guest. I welcome that fight….” Well Mr. Barack Hussein Obama, be careful what you wish for because that's exactly what the American people are going to do. We're going to “go for it” and we're going to take the fight, you so enthusiastically welcome, right to you.

Starting today, we're going to Take Back America; because contrary to what you may believe, the United States is not a third-world banana republic where tyrannical despots give the people people marching orders.

You, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama, work for the American people. The American people do not take orders from you. The people are not your serfs. You take orders from us.

Therefore, the American people are going to do to you what all bosses do to employees who forget their place and petulantly and childishly disobey orders and then have the nerve to tell their bosses to “go for it” when they are ordered to correct their mistakes. The American people are going to can you… fire you… make you redundant….

But first… BEFORE the American people correct the mistake of hiring you in the first place… BEFORE you are forced to clean out your desk… the American people are going to correct another mistake… and send a clear and unmistakable message to you and every other insubordinate employee who may have a tendency to forget that they serve the American people.

We're going to go over your head… we're going to de-fund and then repeal ObamaCare, just so you (and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and every other wanna-be socialist in Washington) know who is boss. Call it your “exit interview” but the American people want to be sure you know exactly WHY you'll be walking the streets looking for a job in short order.

  • texasaggie

Unfortunately to a large extent that is true. Just remember the riots that happened in the Irish section of Boston when they bussed in African American kids. And the two cops that got involved in the business with the African American professor.

  • Wolfsinger

Scott Brown is a self absorbed loon and I am seriously beginning to question his mental health.

His actions demonstrate beyond all doubt that he thinks his financial backers and supporters are mindless dweebs who have never turned on a TV, a radio or viewed a news or blog site on the internet.

His actions, his lying is akin to that of a petulant child who says anything to avoid trouble or to serve his selfish ends and who believes what ever comes out of his mouth at that second. Worst still, he acts like anyone who hears him thinks the same way he does – regardless of that facts.

Scott Brown voters…you've been had. Scott Brown financial backers….you're being played.

Played by grown man who acts like a 4 year old. Good luck with that.

  • overdoneputaforkinit

    Rachel Maddow, A+++

  • hmpmttysg

Poor Tater. Off your meds again are you?

  • Wildcat

At this point, it sounds like she really doesn't even need to actively *do* anything to use this idiot. All she *really* needs to do is sit back and let him provide free publicity for her show.

That's what *any* unethical talk show host would do. An unethical host *wouldn't* push back on a regular basis, *wouldn't* insist that the candidate stop building straw men in her yard.

  • ffakr

Sorry, the American people Don't want to repeal it. The Tea Party and FOX news wants to repeal it.

When we discount those that wanted the bill to be MORE liberal, Health Care reform is overwhelmingly popular.

There was an election. YOU LOST. That's what happens when your party and your ideology nearly destroys the world economy.

  • Mr. Neutron

Scott Brown will never go on Rachel's show, because he doesn't want Rachel's finely tuned gaydar to go off:
    http://eagleionline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads…

He's been living La Vida Cloaka for a long time, and doesn't want to endanger his well paying gig with the Family Values crowd.

  • Eyeball_Kid

While she's not a candidate, she IS a very political Democrat who understands that she can play a unique role in her party. Brown handed her a gift. He exposed his flank to a political non-candidate who doesn't have a political future to preserve, but who knows how to drive a stake when it's handed to her.

  • pattayagirls

    Pattaya Girls

  • gl27

why is that the really sad part?

  • Howie Felch

Yeah, and all texans are militia buttwipes and christofascists! Look, do not slander an entire region based on the behavior of its most ignorant inhabitants. This is just as bad a racism. Texas, for instance, can very fairly be said to be ten times more racist than boston ever could be, but I would not assert it as a condition of everyone there. YOu obviously know little to nothing of Boston, I would doubt that you have ever even been there. Seriously, “The irish section of Boston”? That is the entire city, almost, but the busing incidents were in “southie”, IN THE 1970′s!!!!! That is a very long time ago, and Southie is now fully integrated. Unless you can speak authoritatively on something, you should keep silent, instead of making yourself look like an idiot, as you clearly did. You are from TEXAS, and you are calling MA racist?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • Howie Felch

BTW, TA, I bet your texas cops are really enlightened and never, ever do bad things to minorities. What an idiot you are. Cops everywhere do this kind of thing, as horrible as that is, indeed. However, our pigf*cking Boston, (and cambridge, BTW) turd cops have nothing on your texas scumbag pigs. I’m sure texas pigs are far, far worse.

  • Howie Felch

Yeah, paddles, you are right> His supporters are for the most part totally clueless. The same folks who listen to WEEI and the right wing talkers. It is entirely likely that they have not, in fact, watched the news, read a blog, or gotten any info that was not custom spun to them by their right wing friends, Like fatarse Ordway or that idiot Howie Carr.

  • RIsandy

Because she is right, but as usual, most will ignore the truth.

  • am

    big fucking deal, maddow.

    *yawn* *stretch*

  • furutyrumo

Maddow, like Olberman, isn't much of a journalist; rather, she aims to be a cult figure among the sort of progressives who want assurances that their investments will be protected if they back “reform,” ride their children around on bicycles, and eat the right foods. The media give us Maddow and Olberman so we won't get real, fire-breathing radicals who might foment revolution (or even actual change).

In this sense, she and Senator Chippendale are well matched.

That's the reason why this supposed hero of the Left wastes time on a pissing contest with a male stripper. They both benefit, like the cheap entertainers that they essentially are. It's not too different from the feuds between professional wrestlers.

When are we going to see real attacks on the kleptocratic ruling classes?

  • Brother Joe

Senator Brown is accustomed to Republican women like Senator Kay B.H. who vowed she would resign her seat to run for Texas governor. She never did. She lost to Perry and now out of her disingenuous concern for Americans she hangs on in the Senate..

  • CosimodiRondo

Yes, thank you for tat “Liar” graphic, Rachel, instead of weaselly words that give him moral wiggle room.

  • Anonymous

Go ahead and name a part of the US that is NOT racist.

  • Bored

Many of us have come to learn Rachel's not as bright as we thought and hoped as progressives. She is a very skilled communicator, but not nearly the critical thinker she uses her verbal skills to mislead her dull-witted fan club into believing she is, just like most of the talkers on the left and right today. A PhD in Politics does not a critical thinker make.

They all say they aren't running until they do or don't. So “liar” is hardly something relevant here. If she's taken some action which makes it certain she can't run, like legal disqualifying herself in some way she can't revoke, she just needs to get that out there and be done with it. Otherwise, this is just a boring, egotistical riff on her part. One that obviously amuses the ignorant on our side.

If she has the phone records about trying to contact Brown, she can end that part of this made-for-TV act by producing them for the public to assess and end the issue. Not pull a Joe McCarthy and saying she has “papers” to sustain the melodrama.

She's become our side's egotistical, boorish, tiresome counterpart to their side's boorish and tiresome talking heads. Maddow needs to produce the phone records and whatever else she has so we assess them her and Brown in this matter, and then move on to something more substantive and interesting than herself. If she can, which appears doubtful given her increasingly obvious limitations.

  • TaterSalad

We're not yet a nation wholly of whiners, but some of our congresspersons are working on it. Democrats who should have been taking a victory lap spent a week cowering in fear of the contents of a tea cup. No wonder real men — mostly but, by no means all, white — are shunning the Democrats. The polling gurus are finding that millions of the white men who helped put Barack Obama in the White House are leaving the Democrats in great numbers, and this could lead to really bad news in November. Gallup finds that white male support for a Democratic Congress has fallen 8 percentage points since last summer, while the support of women has remained remarkably steady. White women who voted for Mr. Obama continue to support him, but only 38 percent of white men support him now. Unless the president and his party find a way to reverse this trend they must prepare for an epic bath nine months hence.

Notice the word – “men”. Guess that leaves you out little guy!

  • Chris

I agree her show is too awful for ratings to be boosted

  • allen_dunckel

Until we provide for the tremendous number of children who are pictured to us as neglected and abused, it is and enormous act of inhumanity to promote the birthing of more without assuring their necessary care. It would seem to be more helpful to women's rights as well as to all human rights to publicise the masses that are so neglected and abused. Until we place our efforts on giving these masses the necessary support, we are compounding the problem with additional unwanted and/or unsupported children.

Rachel Maddow fires back at Sen. Scott Brown for the fundraising lies he repeats about her alleged Senate challenge, his staff’s denial that the Rachel Maddow Show had called his office, and his delusions about being a topic that boosts the show’s ratings.
