This is yet another in an ever-lengthening litany of reasons Palin will never hold public office again.

I work in the Alaska state government in a pretty political position. From what I saw, Sarah Palin was way over her head as Governor of this small state of 600,000. She's not very bright, BUT she does have a really good sense of what sells and her populism is genuine . The only thing she actually accomplished as governor was raising taxes on the oil companies. Let me repeat that: Sarah Palin proposed and supported raising taxes. Of course the bill passed because all the democrats and half the republicans supported it, and it was the democrats who did the heavy lifting politically, but still it wouldn't have happened if she hadn't been for it. The gas pipeline that she likes to talk about may nor may not happen, but the tax increase is the reason why Alaska has a budget surplus in 2010(whatever our debt may be.) The mainstream republicans (who never liked Palin) hope to roll back the tax increase, but haven't been successful so far. It's always struck me as funny that no one talks about Palin's support for raising oil taxes. The republicans don't want to emphasize that their VP candidate actively pushed to raise taxes, and I guess the democrats don't want to emphasize that she supported this bipartisan and populist idea. It's true that she should never hold any office because she's just not competent, but she also isn't your standard country club republican.

Part of this story seems to be missing. I'm curious what the debt to GDP ratio was when Palin took office. Anybody have that info?

Read your deed. subsurface (mineral) rights are specifically excluded from virtually every land purchase these days, because the mineral rights were leased or sold long before you bought your tract. What this article doesn’t mention is that Alaska isn’t in any debt and they’re paying back money borrowed from their own reserves. No big housing crash, or job loss, in fact Anchorage just hired 10,000 people for new projects. I’m not suggesting everyone up and move to Alaska, but they are in a lot better shape then the majority of other states. I bet the $500 million of guaranteed money to oil companies to build the natural gas pipeline was part of that number as well.

Here’s what I find so troubling about Sarah Palin’s claim of fiscal conservancy and anti-government solutions – I believe Alaska is the largest per capita recipient of federal dollars received to federal tax dollars paid. Alaskans receive much more in return from the federal government than they pay in. The postal subsidies alone would make people in the lower 48 cringe if they were known and understood.

Alaska has no state income tax. They have no sales tax. Most of the state has no property tax. They have nearly 40 billion in a savings account and they pay out between $1000 – $1800 a year to every citizen – man, woman and child. Yet, they claim they are broke. Sarah Palin took all the federal money she could and spent it without question.

There isn’t a state in this country that wouldn’t trade places with Alaska in a heartbeat.

Sarah Palin and Alaskans have no problem at all with spending money – just as long as it isn’t their own money they’re spending.

Time after time after time. The Family Values party is not that. The CEO party is not that. The MBA party is nothing of the sort. The party of less gov't is not that.

Ever watch Alaska State Troopers on TV? If you haven’t, you should. It’s a department that’s so underfunded that Alaska comes across as an almost lawless state because of the shortage of State Troopers.

The nut doesn't fall far from the Bush.

This debt to GDP ratio doesn't take into account a few factors that would be worth looking into.

Firstly, two years ago the Alaskan treasury coffers were overflowing with money as oil prices skyrocketed. While they should have saved more, they do keep a reserve fund that was entirely filled before giving out $2000 “energy refunds” to every Alaskan. As oil prices fell over the last two years, the rosy projections for state revenue (more than 60% from oil) didn't pan out and left spending too high, but the reserve fund might be able to even out the discrepancy until crude prices rise with demand after the recession.

Furthermore, Alaska has a huge pot of extra savings in the Permanent Fund Dividend. This fund pays out a percentage of each years earnings to residents based on its five year average growth. Recently the fund lost money, but still had to pay out because the average was still positive. I think that the principle is untouchable, so the state might have “filled the gap” and created an excessive one time payment not related to Palin at all.

This is all speculation, but the causation vs correlation argument with Palin here is especially weak without a deeper look into the reasons for the debt burden. It would be similar to saying that Obama caused the deficit problem since its getting really bad on his watch rather than the Republican unfunded medicare expansion, Bush tax cuts, war, and an economy in recession lowering revenue, factors which can account for more than 80% of the current US deficit.

Except that Canada's Debt-to-GDP ratio is only 30% as of 2009. So it's twice as bad as us 'Socialists' with our tax-n-spend ways

You only left out 2 of the most important pieces of data. Alaska has no state tax. Zero, none, zippo. Not only do they not have any state income tax they have a yearly Alaska resource rebate. How many of the lower 48 states not only don't tax you but send you a check each year? Most of the short term shortfall came about as Washington bureaucrats unexpectedly turned off some of the oil revenue.

This story is rubbish.

Does the story ever once name the actual face amount of the debt? Oh, and the story never notes that most of the drilling sites in Alaska are either Native American land, or federally owned. In both cases, it's the landowner who reaps the benefits of the “oil rich land,” thus the oil producers (called lessees) pay the landowners (called lessors) a royalty for the total production. Moreover, Alaska does not collect a sales tax as a state, and still manages an oil-funded trust accountfor its residents.

Oh, one final thought: in a republic, the LEGISLATORS draft the spending bills, not the executives. Before crucifying Mrs. Palin, for whom I have no lost love, get your hands on the budget, get your hands on the vote records, and determine if a spendthrift state assembl and the massive drop in oil prices (from triple digits to $36 per barrel) had more to do with debt than Sarah's “overspending.”

In an extraordinary vote-buying splurge before she left office, Palin sent $1,200 checks to every qualified man, woman and child in Alaska. This was on top of the $2,000+ they had all already received.

That dug the state 3/4ths of a billion deeper into a hole.

Sarah was spending like a drunken sailor when oil went to $144 a barrel. She was squandering funds that could have been used to retire debt.

Most of the short term shortfall came as Palin and the Republican lower house in the legislature were throwing money out the window. The “Washington bureaucrats” had nothing to do with it, but nice try, “Budj.”

Alaska has a huge amount of debt that in part was bought on by funding endless “economic development” projects that threw billions down the toilet.

Example: State funded part of a $300 million supposed “clean coal” power plant that never produced a kilowatt of energy. They just tried to unload it and couldn't get any utility in the state to take if FOR FREE!

Alaska's GDP is small by comparison to other states rank 45th.
This will cause large swings in the ratio of GDP to Debt. When revenue is based on the price of oil. Alaska is carrying a lot of pension debt and with revenue from oil tied to the price of oil, it is easy to see why 2009 would not look good.

A better option is to convert traditional pension and retiree health plans into individual savings-based systems so that workers prefund their own retirements. Two states, Alaska and Michigan, have moved to savings-based (or defined-contribution) pension plans for new employees.

The Alaska Legislature adopted a plan proposed by Palin in 2007 (Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share) that raised the tax that oil companies have to pay on their profits from a base rate of 22.5 percent to 25 percent. Oil companies, including ExxonMobil, opposed the tax hike, claiming it would affect their project investments. The revenue generated from the tax increase, which significantly added to the state’s budget surplus, allowed Palin’s administration to issue a onetime “resource rebate” of $1,200 to eligible state residents in 2008 to help with increasing energy prices.

Anchorage Daily News, Aug. 8, 2008: It was Palin, after all, who last month proposed that lawmakers pay out a $1,200 resource rebate as a way for the state to share some of its multibillion-dollar oil revenue surplus with Alaska residents.

The idea for a people’s payment, however, originated in January with Haines Republican Rep. Bill Thomas, a commercial fisherman who suggested a $1,000 rebate, saying he was moved by a legally blind and diabetic friend forced to cut firewood for lack of money to buy heating fuel.

Allen is now doing federal time after selling his corporation for $462 million.

Palin could see the budget deficiets coming. Besides not being one to actually work on finding solutions, Alaska's debt load would hurt her career dreams of higher office….That's a big reason why she resigned when she did.

What's even more funny is the fact during her campaigning stump back in 2008, she was for health care reform but only in bailing out the banks that took in bad loans as well as sold loans to people who couldn't afford them, and the auto industry. Once she became second place all of a sudden she starts putting “her” child Trig in the spot light by making up a death panel wanting to kill her son. Back in July 7th 2009 she said she had ethic violation charges totaling up to 500,000 dollars. As if that wasn't enough she began her anti health care reform would put this country into further debt rhetoric. Which should have come across like a skeleton in her former governor closet wanting to tell the American people she left a huge bomb of a debt for her state to clean up after.

The increase in the USA debt ratio may not go that high if everything goes better than expected and it could go worse if everything goes worse than expected.

The at risk state of California is only 40% ratio with GDP, with its vast oil almost all gone. Alaska still had enough oil revenue, to solve their debt problems, and to start up geothermal low carbon energy, and did neither under her management. I know, truth hurts, but hurting heals.

This info looks like it was taken from a NYT article that only makes sense if you factor in unfunded pensions and don't look at their state investment profolio of about 36 billion, that is equal to almost 4x their yearly expenditures.
