WASHINGTON (AFP) – An explosion ripped through a coal mine in West Virginia, killing 25 workers and leaving four unaccounted for in one of the worst US mining disasters in recent years, officials said.

The blast occurred towards the end of the afternoon at the Upper Big Branch mine run by Performance Coal Company, a subsidiary of Massey Energy, in the town of Mountcoal located some 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Charleston.

“Massey Energy Company is confirming twenty-five fatalities at its Upper Big Branch Mine, resulting from a tragic explosion,” the company said in a statement.

“Our prayers go out to the families of the miners. We want to assure the families of all the miners we are taking every action possible to locate and rescue those still missing,” the company’s chairman and chief executive, Don Blankenship, said.

President Barack Obama telephoned West Virginia governor Joe Manchin to offer “his deepest condolences to the those who lost loved ones earlier today in the tragic incident.”

Obama told Manchin “that the federal government stands ready to offer whatever assistance is needed in this rescue effort,” a White House statement said.

A massive rescue operation was launched after the blast as local and volunteer firefighters rushed to the scene along with a fleet of ambulances and mine safety workers tried to contact missing miners underground.

Details about the rescue operation were sketchy, in part because mobile phone services are intermittent at best in the mountainous area of the mostly rural state.

Manchin, who rushed home from a vacation upon learning the news, said Obama had promised “every asset available” to help in the rescue effort.

“This is devastating news and our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the miners who have died,” the governor said in a statement. “We are offering everything we can to assist those families at this time.”

Manchin asked everyone to “pray for the miners, their families and our rescue teams.”

In Washington, West Virginia senator Jay Rockefeller said he and his wife were “heartbroken” at the news. “We are sending all of our prayers and thoughts to the brave miners and their families.

“I am working with state and federal officials to get as much information as possible and I am doing all I can to help make sure all resources are made available for this rescue effort.”

In January 2006, 12 West Virginia coal miners died in the Sago coal mine, owned by the International Coal Group, after they were trapped by an explosion more than 40 hours 80 meters (260 feet) underground. One miner survived.

The worst-ever US mining disaster was in 1907 in Monongah, West Virginia, where an explosion killed 362 workers.

According to official figures, annual fatalities from mining accidents have totaled less than 20 in West Virginia since 1983, except for 1991 when there were 22 and 2006 when there were 25.

“According to official figures, annual fatalities from mining accidents have totaled less than 20 in West Virginia since 1983, except for 1991 when there were 22 and 2006 when there were 25.”

So, in other, more straight forward words, hundreds of lives have been lost in mining accidents in West Virginia since 1983. “Clean coal” my ass.

  • OldAtlantic

These miners are the people libs hate. Men's median wages are the same as in 1973. See graph page 18 http://www.census.gov/prod/2009pubs/p60-236.pdf. Libs bring in non-whites to keep down the wages of whites. So whites in the mountains have to take dangerous jobs to continue to try to get some of the few good paying jobs left for white people.

Every time whites die in the mines because they are not safe, libs are behind it, keeping wages down. The libs took away the bargaining power of the miners to keep their wages down and keep the jobs less safe. This is what white life is worth in Lib America.

Libs hate and despise these white communities in the mountains of West Virginia. They pour out their hate for these people on a regular basis. The entire Lib media machine dishes out hate of these people on a regular basis. In the lib mind, those who died are the bigots of Mountcoal W Va who should be race replaced by non-white immigration.

  • razrlazr

Spew your hateful, baitful venom elsewhere. Nothing like politicizing a disaster…

  • OldAtlantic

That's what Libs do on a regular basis. They metastasize disaster. These are the Founding Stock Americans that Libs hate on a typical date.

  • rf

Actually ; OldAtlantic , it is you that hates- Cons are the ones who have disrupted unions and your savior Blankenship just killed another couple dozen Americans…

You are PeeWee Herman in overdose; “I know you are but what am I?” Every word you craft is no more creative than when you were six…

Massey Energy is a repeat offender; you; OldAtlantic are delusional and wrong-

  • OldAtlantic

Repeat offender because workers lack bargaining power. You bring in non-whites to be their replacements, so white life doesn't matter to employers. That's why men's median wages are the same as in 1973, and women's median wages are what men's were in 1963.

  • scortchdearth

[sarcasm]This is all the union's fault, you know…[/sarcasm]

  • Chuck

OK, I'll bite, How exactly do “libs” bring in non-white workers? AND, please offer some evidence that these dastardly “libs” are actually “libs.” Please, as many credible sources as possible. Dazzle us.

  • skyguy

I hope the authorities check to insure that “the Company” wasn't behind the explosion in order to promote Mountain Top removal mining.

  • OldAtlantic

Immigration is primarily non-white. Libs bring them in claiming the economy needs them or that its civil rights extended to the whole world. Over 1 million legal immigrants a year come in.

    Edwin S. Rubenstein

    “#

For every 100.0 Hispanics employed in January 2001 there were 123.1 in February 2010
    #

For every 100.0 non-Hispanics employed in January 2001 there were 97.6 in February 2010

    Displacement Index: “VDAWDI equals 126.1 (=100 X 123.1/97.6)”

  • Debby

Where's the part about “libs” bringing them in? I agree that illegal immigrants drive down wages, but not that “libs” bring them in

  • OldAtlantic

Libs support immigration. For example, Obama and the Democrats in Congress have not stopped legal immigration during this jobs crisis. Its not just illegals who drive down wages, but legal as well. Women's wages slowed their convergence to men's around 1990. It was in 1990 that Bush the Elder increased legal immigration with the votes of the Democratic Congress. If you look at the graph on page 18 you will see that the ratio of women's wages to men slows down its increase after 1990.

Some people say a man is made outta mud.
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood.
    Muscle and blood, skin and bones;
    A mind that's weak and a back that's strong.

You load sixteen tons an' what do you get?
Another day older deeper and debt.
St Peter don't you call me I cause can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store.

Well, I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine.
I picked up a shovel, Iwalked out to the mine.
I loaded sixteen tons of Number 9 coal,
An' the store boss said: “Well, bless my soul.”

You load sixteen tons an' what do you get?
Another day older deeper and debt.
St Peter don't you call me I cause can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store.

Well, I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain.
Fightin' an' trouble are my middle name.
I was raised in the canebreak by an old mama lion,
Can't no high-toned woman makes me walk the line.

You load sixteen tons an' what do you get?
Another day older deeper and debt.
St Peter don't you call me I cause can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store.

Well, if you see me comin', better step aside.
A lotta men didn't; a lotta men died.
One fist of iron, the other of steel.
If the right one don't get you, then the left one will.

You load sixteen tons an' what do you get?
Another day older deeper and debt.
St Peter don't you call me I cause can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store.

    You are full of shit.

  • dennycrane

The coal owners are the problem, not the workers. Fuck you're stupid.

  • Debby

Thanks for the chart. It's going to take me awhile to digest it, But I wanted to ask you what kind of effect you think union busting and outsourcing have on wages?

  • dennycrane

Bargaining “power?” These robbers brought in the Pinkerton gestopo to bust the unions. Hmm, sort of like blackwater in New Orleans. Of course you would be on the wrong side. Even the early history of the klan had the support of the blacks and Irish, etc. to change the inhumane treatment from these plunderers. A common enemy-capitalism without boundaries.

  • dennycrane

    You are fucking crazy.

  • dennycrane

Fine the capitalist pigs that have illegals brought in and employeed. The law is on the books. Your hero RayGun is the one who started this. Then came union busting. I can't believe you are anti-union. Asswipe.

  • OldAtlantic

    Very good Denny. Try this.

You load sixteen tons of immigrants from Mexico an' what do you get?
Another day older deeper and debt.
St Peter don't you call me I cause can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store
    because immigration kept wages low

  • OldAtlantic

1924 Immigration restriction is what busted the Pinkerton gestapo. When there is no immigration, employers have to employ the people here at good wages and safe conditions. That is why things improved so that in the 1950's we had a baby boom. Immigration cut that off.

  • OldAtlantic

Outsourcing is like immigration. To work it needs know-how transfer. That is what happened by educating people from India and China at Stanford, which now is less than 30 percent white. Union busting worked during the pre 1924 immigration restriction. That is why labor leaders at that time supported immigration restriction. Income inequality fell from 1924 to the peak of median wages for men in 1973. Since then it has risen.

    http://www.thewe.cc/thewei/_/images11/us_rich_s…

Income inequality peaks at the end of the 1920's. It then fell and stayed low during immigration restriction.

Since the resurgence of immigration after the 1965 immigration act and even before at a slower pace, income inequality has risen. Its now at levels from before the 1924 immigration restriction. The chart linked stops in the mid 1990's, but inequality continued to go up. This was the 1990 increase in legal immigration combined with illegal immigration.

The graph shows the loss of bargaining power by workers. That means less safety improvement as well as less wage improvement.

  • blip

That is quite a radical revision of history you got there…

Try listening to some Woody Guthrie. It's not as evil Glenn Beck would have you believe:

In a half and an hour ago,
Way down in this tunnel of coal,
Gas caught fire from somebody's lamp.
And the miners are choking in smoke.

    Goodbye to Dickie and Honey,
Goodbye to the wife that I love.
One of these men not coming home,
Tonight when the work whistle blows.

  • dennycrane

You “load” them up with the money from companies that bring them over the border. Once in a while they get ratted out, shipped back to make the news, the companies fill up the place where they stay with more. You are really stupid to not know this. Fine these people and it will stop.

  • dennycrane

……..”in 2006, fatal work injuries among miners in the U.S. doubled from the previous year, totaling 47.”

…”Coal mining remains the second most dangerous occupation in America.”

  • kwertie

That piece of shit is unbelievably stupid. Idiots like that are really what's gone wrong in the US.

This mining company has a long history of safety violations. Republicans are against any sort of regulation of business. And this stupid prick blames “libruls” when disaster strikes.

  • kwertie

Actually, I think he's just a troll, and should be ignored.

  • kwertie

    Don't feed the trolls.

  • OldAtlantic

That's what you did to the miners by supporting immigration to keep their bargaining power low. Its natural that you lash out, because you don't want to acknowledge your complicity with the big corporations.

  • OldAtlantic

Bargaining power can be measured by wages and safety improvements. Both tell the same story, lower bargaining power for workers from immigration replacement.

  • kwertie

Well, duh. It's corporations that are bringing in low-wage workers. The corps don't give a shit what color they are.

AncientAsshole is just a troll. Ignore him.

  • dennycrane

What “company” is “Libs”? Is it Libby? I cannot find it. Are you saying “libs” as in liberals, “own” a company that hires illegals to mine coal, slaughter houses and pays them shit? Now we know your problem–drinking wood alcohol.

The only way to stop greedy killers like Massey Energy is huge wrongful death or similar lawsuits!
If Massey Energy has to pay billions in damages and court costs, they'll close or grow up!
I'm hoping they will be forced to close thereby saving other employees from a terrible death!

  • Jodi

Oh Old! You are so tragically misinformed by your Faux News cronies. I'm sorry, kwertie, I know, I know – “don't feed the trolls”, but I just HAD to, with the nonsense he is spewing. He is talking about WEST VIRGINIA for God's sake! Today still, WV is the LEAST diverse state in the nation. How many, OldAtlantic, of the 10.2% of non-white residents of the entire state, do you think work at that mine? I've heard a few of the names and ages of the deceased and they were Americans for decades, leaving behind family and friends. Now just how, in your mind, do you justify blaming an entire group that had NOTHING to do with standards for the mine?!?! This country was built and grown with immigrants. To say that it should be stopped is anti-American in my book. To say that they are to blame for corporations' lack of safety standards is just plain insulting. It's the CORPORATION'S fault for the 57 safety infractions in just one month. They would rather pay the tiny fines for infractions, than make the work environment safe for their employees. How you get that immigration was to fault for an all white employee force that had been working for the mine for years and years, is beyond me. A bit of a stretch, don't ya think? Or is it your mantra to just automatically blame “libs” and non-white persons? Disgusting! You are not a true American in my eyes, because you stand for the exact opposite of why this country was started.
