Fox News disproves itself: Network’s own poll finds Americans favor ‘IRS’ over ‘Tea Party’

After months upon months of enthusiastic, cheer-leading coverage of any rally that involved tea, tea bagging or tea partying, the Fox News network has miraculously disproved itself by producing a new poll that finds Americans think more highly of the Internal Revenue Service than they do the vocal conservative minority.

Atop the fourth page of a Fox News Opinion Dynamics poll released April 8, the questioner explains that respondents would be read a series of names and asked whether their opinion is positive or not. The most popular among the names is Barack Obama, who scored a 50 percent approval rating. Second was the Internal Revenue Service, at 49 percent.

Down below Democrats and even below Republicans is the “Tea Party,” at 36 percent approval. This particular poll’s questions reference the “Tea Party” as though it were a unified group, akin to a third party actor, instead of what it really is: a disparate collection of middle to fringe right wing groups that originally came together as an organizing platform for Congressman Ron Paul, but were popularly coopted and briefly organized by old guard Republicans into a series of loud and angry demonstrations against the health reform laws.

Naturally, ratings for individual political leaders were lower than ratings given to entire political parties, but when asked about Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, respondents were especially harsh, giving them 16 and 29 percent favorability, respectively.

The only single politician who scored lower than Democratic leadership was House Minority Leader John Boehner, one of the GOP’s top men and a key public face for the party, with just 12 percent approval.

Naturally, Fox News went on to ask poll respondents questions like how in-line they think their values are with the “Tea Party” and whether they were less likely to vote for their congressperson if they cast a yes ballot on health reform. They also asked people to rate how health reform made them “feel,” set to a scale of “good” or “bad,” and if they “feel” like the United States’ economy will suffer because of the new laws.

The placement of the IRS in double-digits over the “Tea Party” in favorability is startling, especially considering how vocal most of the group’s loudest activists are concerning taxes. Though virtually all lower and middle class Americans received a tax cut by President Obama, 90 percent of tea party respondents to a February CBS poll were oblivious to this fact.

“Fox’s poll finding is particularly humorous considering that a recent conservative attack on health care reform has been to falsely claim that it would lead to the hiring of 16,500 IRS agents to enforce the law,” noted Matt Corley, writing for Think Progress. “’I suspect every Republican candidate will campaign on a promise to cut off all funding in January for the 16,000 IRS agents,’ said Newt Gingrich recently. ‘You don’t need a health Gestapo in the United States.’”

In a separate CBS poll released Thursday, the network found that most Americans have a negative opinion of Sarah Palin, which the news organization called “a sort of spokesperson” for the tea parties.

According to their analysis, 38 percent of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of the former politician, whereas just 24 percent like her. Among Republicans that rating is much higher: 43 percent view Palin favorably, while another 41 percent either didn’t have enough information or simply could not decide.

Because of her recent speech to the 67th annual Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America expo (which received rather bitter reviews), Palin was offered $25,000 by Nevadans for Sensible Marijuana Laws to give a short pep talk to their group. ”There’s no reason why former Governor Palin should reject our offer,” a spokesman jokingly said, citing how much safer cannabis is than alcohol.

One possible reason why she’d decline: according to The New York Times, Palin charges up to $100,000 per appearance – something that even tea partiers have chided her for and a fee the alcohol purveyors presumably paid.

Though she did not address any issues specific to the wine and spirits industries, Palin did emphasize one term in particular during her speech to the conference. According to Tom Wark’s wine blog, she was all about “deregulation” in a fuzzy, non-specific sense: likely the wrong theme to employ while speaking to a room of professionals who serve an industry that strongly supports special regulations springing from the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which Palin would now appear to be against, just on general principle.

These bastards would “rail” against Tom Paine and “Common Sense.” I wouldn't believe them if they read sports scores or the time. Please, somebody, jolt their satellite out of orbit.

  • your mom

yeah sure, I always prefer the ones who do the shake downs too. It feels so good to give my money away to fight endless wars and fund coruption at every level. I figured this year I would donate all my assets to the IRS cause I like them so much. Even if the tea party people were the most evil people on the earth, I dont have to pay them a dime and I dont have to be around tea people if I dont want to. The IRS, I have no choice but to bend over and take it.

  • maasanova

Well after the other state-run media outlets describe the Tea Party movement as a deragatory, homosexual sex act, and compare them to white supremacists, racists, murderers, child rapists and cop killers, what do you expect the stupid sheep to vote for?

  • Moon

I wouldn't even urinate upon them if they were aflame.

  • davewtf

    You are hilarious!

Fox News, voted the most popular of news outlets, has been promoting the tea partiers as the voice of America!

You are showing that YOU are one of the stupid sheep.

  • davewtf

Schools, roads, police, fire, EMS, hospitals, libraries, postal system, the list is long.

  • buttercup

A 36% approval rating is pretty scary.

Please stop driving on our interstate highway system or taking any pharmaceuticals developed using federal R&D funding.

  • PeteWa

lol, it's wildly encouraging when you realize it's a Faux Snooze poll, directed at Faux's braindead viewers.

  • kiop

'Voted' the most popular? LOL.. Check Neilsen ratings.. Fox is the most watched cable news network, ahead of CNN and MSNBC. There isn't a 'vote', it just is what it is.. it has he largest viewer audience..

It doesn't 'promote' the tea parties.. it just covers them.. something the other networks refuse to do, because of political bias..

  • tootiredoftheright

Hey dude teabaggers named themselves that. It wasn't until after being mocked for a few months that the teabaggers started to complain. Care to explain why white supremicist groups openly declare tea party parades as perfect recruitment ground?

Btw teabagging is often done by straights. It's meant to humilate an unconsious or asleep person. Often done by frat boys.

  • davewtf

“other networks refuse to do, because of political bias'? LMFAO

Fox News is for Conservatives only. And it has become even more conservative. So what you are seeing on Fox News is news for conservatives. Teabaggers are conservatives, and not even the smart ones. So, of course the only news station for hard-core conservatives would cover the teabaggers.

That does not make the other news channels politically biased, it only makes Fox News politically biased.

  • John M Conley

$100,000 to hear airhead Palin? What a bimbo. Her screechy voice makes my ears bleed.

  • Lyman

    No No No
    This is wrong.
Anyone trying to struggle with our current tax code must realize
that the Tea Party-ers , as absurd as they may be…are far more rational
than our ridiculous tax laws. April 15th is quickly approaching. Good luck everybody.
I hope your computers don't crash.

  • TPisGOP

Best and most accurate description I've read about the TP yet:

“… what it really is: a disparate collection of middle to fringe right wing groups that originally came together as an organizing platform for Congressman Ron Paul, but were popularly coopted and briefly organized by old guard Republicans into a series of loud and angry demonstrations against the health reform laws.”

  • gusr

Wow that IS underwhelming! There just may be no hope for the human race !
But I guess we'll just have to work harder in the Tea Party and see if maybe those poll results aren't more of a result of years of MSM brainwashing.

  • gusr

I'll stick with FREE ENTERPRISE, it's much more efficient and the only way that American manufacturing with our standard of living can compete with the dirt wages manufacturing of other countries.

  • gusr

You are correct. The list of extremely expensive government responsible debacles seems to be unending. That's why we need to get the federal government OUT.

  • algionfriddo

I agree, but why do so many folks watch Fox News? Righties tell me all the time how their side is winning because of Fox News’ ratings. When almost half the country identifies with Fox News, I find that very scary.

Will Fox and the tea baggers be happy when someone gets killed? I doubt it.

The cable companies “give” you FAUX NEWS on the first tier for free. The MSNBC, CNN appears, mostly, for another tier and more cost. Older people, to save money, just get that tier so they get their local channels and a “news(?)” station.

The DishNet, gives you a “progressive” TV station with Thom Hartmann.

So, people think they get the news. The other day, beckhead, announced that he was “entertainment” not news. The truth, wow.

Just because Faux News championed their cause(co-opted it) you assume they are all right wing nut jobs. Faux news was used to make Liberals hate the Tea Party, and from the looks of these comments – I’d say the did a hella job. Wake up from the left/right paradigm, my friends… it’s time.

no maas, no mass.. uh they DID wander around for the last year proclaiming themselves the party of “I wear testicles on my forehead” (see Tea-bagging) a phrase in common use for the last 30 or so years. I have to point out “mom' that the IRS is merely the collection agency for the Federal government .I one hundred percent agree with you about endless wars . Whenever they talk about the deficit they always neglect to mention that we spend more on our defense than the ENTIRE rest of the Planet COMBINED and yet we have the jerk from Oklahoma who is “bravely” standing up for future generations by stopping the unemployed from having their benefits continued . He wasn't nearly so worried about the Deficit when he voted for BOTH the war in Iraq and the ONLY war Time Tax CUT . He also rationalized his actions by explaining that it only impacted a small number of people , of course those people would have the greatest need to spend the money and hence have would have created a multiplier effect but there was no such worry about something impacting a small number of people when voted to do away with the Inheritance tax that impacts less than 1% of the populace .

  • Terrible

Then as has already been said stay off our roads and only travel on private ones. And what the hell does manufacturing have to do America's taxes? If you're a Republican/Teabager type then you support lowering Americans wages to less then other countries as that's your idea of “free enterprise”. You are all for raping American workers in favor of corporate profits. And guess what? Most Americans DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU! Get over it!

I saw an interesting article yesterday that claimed that less than 50% of Taxpayers actually pay
any income tax . That is thanks to all the credits that are available . I am not sure if that is true
but then again I don't qualify for any tax credits , what with children grown and through college .

I do wonder about most of the Teabaggers I saw complaining about high taxes since they seemed like Joe the Plumber (thank god his 15 minutes of fame is FINALLY over) a man who was so concerned about being taxed on money he will NEVER earn . I doubt most of them have incomes that put them in the highest marginal Tax Bracket but STILL they complain about being
overtaxed . The same applies to all those elderly baggers who want no part of government run health even as they tell them to keep their hands off my MEDICARE .
A final rant about John McCain who hates Government run health care . John has had government run health care his ENTIRE life: starting as a Dependent of his Admiral Father , continuing on as a member of the armed forces , then as a Vet and finally as a Medicare recipient

Every time I hear that teabaggers actually exist I think the same thing: “There just may be no hope for the human race.”. I would really like to see a breakdown of IQ levels for the teabaggers compared to other politcal points of view; like the blue state red state breakdowns (which are not big shockers, but funny). And “MSM brainwashing” …BWAHAHAHAHA…Another happy customer I see.

  • seaglass

Avid Fox News watcher (start throwing tomatoes now). The one point to take away from this is: if they weren't a threat, why attack them? The fact is, tea partiers have a strong backing by traditional democrats. It's the secular progressive Kool Aid drinkers (and those serving it to the masses) who are viciously propagating smears. Face it… we're on the road to communism, America woke up and smells the coffee now. Better late than never. TP'ers at least give hope that we can undo this b.s.

Beck stated that in addition to himself, hosts Neil Cavuto, Greta Van Susteren, and Sean Hannity would be “live” at different protests. While Beck spoke, on-screen text labeled those protests as “FNC Tax Day Tea Parties.”

“…something the other networks refuse to do, because of political bias.”

CNN's Shannon Travis: [H]ere’s what you don't often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: Patriotic signs professing a love for country; mothers and fathers with their children; African-Americans proudly participating; and senior citizens bopping to a hip-hop rapper.

Last week, I saw all of this during a five-city Western swing as the Tea Party Express national tour made its way across the country.

Together, we beamed out images of the anger and the optimism, profiled African-Americans who are proud to be in the Tea Party's minority and showed activists stirred by “God Bless America” or amused by a young rapper who strung together rhymes against the president and Democrats.

It is important to show the colorful anger Americans might have against elected leaders and Washington. But people should also see the orange-vested Tea Party hospitality handlers who welcome you with colorful smiles.

    Really?

Only if “traditional democrats” are the not-so-crazy right-wingers (ex-republicans) who couldn't support the fascists anymore.

  • Dr. Matt

Leave the country. You won't be missed.

  • wjcormier

I think we're failing to grasp the full context of this post. Rank and file members of the Republican Party are losing their jobs, homes and money just like the rest of us. I've lived in RED states for the past two decades, and the rank and file Republicans are just ordinary people who have been brainwashed to believe everything Fox News tells them, but in an about face, even they are not (as a majority) in favor of the Tea Party and they also believe, like most of us, that John Boehner is a pompous jerk.

What this article and Fox's poll demonstrate to me is that most Republicans are just people like you and I, but the trouble comes from their leadership, who are usually part of the “elites” and could care less about anyone and will always support the God Almighty Dollar above the health and welfare of their own party. Their leadership, IMO, are nothing but a bunch of fascists, and for far too long, their rank and file members have had the wool pulled over their eyes for far too long.

Last I checked, the “FED” is still a government of the people, by the people, for the people. So when you say “FUCK THE FED”, what your really saying is “FUCK THE PEOPLE”, because you know what….the majority voted for our elected officials. You may not like it, but that is the system we have and have had for over 200 years. So as I see it, that leaves you two options…make that three. 1. Work to oust the politicians you don't like. 2. Leave the country ASAP, or 3. Just shut the fuck up and go away!

Calling Tea Partiers “tea baggers” was started by smug Kieth Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Janeane Garofalo and then parroted throught the blogosphere.

Considering the original Tea Parties that sprung up around late 2006-2007 were the end the Fed and 9/11 truth, I highly doubt that they would have named themselves after a derogatory sex act performed by homosexuals and latent homosexual frat boys

It was funny the first few times they did it on national tv, but now it is quite old

  • tootiredoftheright

Your claims are not accurate. The tea party movement started in 2009. Not years bafore. It was created shortly after a rant on CNBC by Rick Santelli.

It was not started by liberals. It was started by the tea party movement themselves. As well as those that promoted them such as Fox News. One fox news commenter said “teabag the white house” and signs carried by the teabaggers talked about teabagging the liberal dems. It whose those actions that got liberals to refer to them as teabaggers because the tea party activists who have no clue what they are arguing against were using the term teabagging. Much like an anti-gay organization rolled out a campaign with the letters M4M to get straight couples to marry while in reality the letters M4M are a personal ad slogan for men looking for men to have casual sex with.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Muddaphrknmark Mark Fettig

Tea bagging was described by the ten year old neighbor kid as an act of oral sex, where the scrotum is being bounced upon the chin – I think it's unprofessional that the news reports will bounce such terms across the screen without checking them first, but I believe they probably get a good laugh out of slipping one in past the watchful eyes of the FCC

Boehner is just phonics at it's finest

  • maasanova

No offense, but you just don't know what you talking about. But it's all good, you check these links that show that 9/11 Truth and End the Fed groups callign themselves “Tea Party for Truth” and their activities go back all the way to 2006.

    http://undertheradarmedia.wordpress.com/?attach…

The Second Annual Boston Tea Party and Conference for 9/11 Truth! – Scientists & Citizens Speak Out! December 15 & 16, 2007

    http://www.boston911truth.org/teaparty/

“In 2006, a libertarian political party called the “Boston Tea Party” was founded. In 2007, the Ron Paul “Tea Party” money bomb, held on the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, broke the one-day fund-raising record by raising $6.04 million in 24 hours.[68]

True, but with an extremely bad attitude. His condescending demeanor and constant opposition to anything that Democrats approve of is disgusting. I despise the GOP leadership and loathe the ground they walk on, as well as the host of right-wing radicals they attract, however do have a lot of experience with the rank and file membership – and from what I've witnessed, as a majority, are not goosestepping with their corrupt leadership. What we hear about here is the minority which are making the majority look like nut-cases, and I don't believe that's a true representation of Republicans in general.

  • michaelsuede

The author didn't look at the the disparity in unfavorables and those not giving an opinion.

While the IRS has a higher approval rating, it also has a higher disapproval rating.

The article could well be titled “Americans Disapprove Of The IRS Over Tea Party”

  • http://www.facebook.com/Muddaphrknmark Mark Fettig

I've long since wondered how one can represent a country as a part-lover, when the only way to properly see everyone's needs would be from an unbiased point of view such as the judges and media used to claim to see by.

  • wjcormier

I couldn't agree more. I'm an Independent and try to keep an unbiased view of our rapidly declining political atmosphere, and at times, it's hard. It's extremely easy to get caught-up in blaming everyone for the acts of the few – and at times, it's a natural knee-jerk response to the upheaval we're witnessing on a national basis. I am a site administrator at the political bandit dot com and I try to keep my criticism balanced but admit that I'm not always successful, but I least I make a concerted effort trying to be non-biased. (I was never non-biased with the Bush administration; I followed him when he was the Gov. of Texas and I knew he was bad from day one.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Muddaphrknmark Mark Fettig

Good point – and his actions the whole way through will eventually be looked into if and when we get our country back from the corporate world
