Lieberman ‘hesitant’ to support Obama nuclear treaty

A neoconservative thinly disguised as an independent is unhappy with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty signed by Russia and the United States this week.

Sen. Joe Lieberman told Fox News’ Chris Wallace that he would be hesitant to support the new nuclear treaty with Russia if President Barack Obama doesn’t commit to modernizing the nuclear arsenal. He also perpetuated fears of Iran.

“Senator Lieberman, you say you may vote against it,” prompted Wallace.

“Anything we can do to reduce the number of nuclear warheads in the world is a positive development,” Lieberman replied. “But in my opinion as we reduce the number of nuclear warheads America has in a world that is still very dangerous and in which the threat of the spread of nuclear powers, particularly Iran, grows every day, we have to make darn sure that our nuclear warheads are capable, are modern. And a lot of them are decades old.”

Lieberman said the administration must commit to modernizing the nuclear stockpile and there won’t be 67 votes to ratify the STAR Treaty unless the administration “makes absolutely clear that some of the statements by Russian president Medvedev at the signing in Prague that seem to suggest that if we continue to build the ballistic-missile defense in Europe that they may pull out of this treaty are just not acceptable to us.”

“We need that defense to protect our allies and ourselves from Iran,” he insisted.

The Obama administration has been seeking Russian support at the UN Security Council for tougher sanctions against Iran.

The so-called “new START” will limit the two former Cold War foes to a maximum of 1,550 deployed warheads, about 30 percent lower than a previous upper limit on warheads set in 2002. It also imposes limits on the intercontinental ballistic missiles needed to deliver the warheads.

Writing for Newsweek that eradicating nukes should still be our goal, Eleanor Clift demonstrates how far to the right Lieberman’s saber-rattling fits into the US Senate.

Asked to assess the likelihood that Obama can get the 67 votes needed in the Senate to ratify the new START treaty, Richard Burt responded that as a former political appointee of two Republican administrations he thinks it will be “very difficult for anybody to come up with a very strong set of coherent arguments against this treaty,” in part because the pact does not take sweeping steps to reduce either the U.S. or Russian arsenal. The importance of the treaty in his view extends to the greater goal of putting U.S.-Russian relations back on track. Arms-control treaties have traditionally won substantial bipartisan support in the Senate, and Burt expressed confidence that Richard Lugar, the ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations committee, will be able to bring enough Republicans on board to gain ratification.

Israel was pissed that it was being (Heaven Forbid!) set up for at least some informal acknowledgment of their nuclear arsenal … they phoned their bulldog.
The bulldog is basically threatening Americans through continuing to foist a nuclear nightmare scenario by a nation with no nuclear weapons, while the nation with a secret stockpile, ‘stealth’ class submarines and has openly bragged to the world that it can move it’s agents in and out of countries with impunity.
Same scenario that was rolled out for the Brits….”Iraq HAS a nuke, Tony…now you don’t want that nuke going off in the UK because you failed to reign in Saddam, now, do you? A nuke goes off in the UK, Tony and we’ll not only be at war with Iraq anyway, but you will go down as the biggest mass murderer in British history dealing with tens of thousands of dead and dying that will effectively destroy your countries entire infrastructure…now repeat after me, Tony…Saddam DOES have a nuke…right Tony.
Make no mistake; without control…every nuke is a false flag waiting to happen.

MAD is insane but it did keep everyone from blowing ourselves up real good during the long dark Cold War. A missile defense says we can survive this thing. It will add far more unpredictability to an already dangerous mess.

Iran isn't any where near the threat as was the USSR. But, fear wouldn't be as effective if that were acknowledged.

Perhaps another 1500 housing units in Gaza or Jerusalem? After all those “people” who used to own them only make the property values go down, and the new owners (?) are of the right religion, and make the values skyrocket…

  • DesertWren

Looks like someone hasn't read the NPT.

Here you go, Mr. Lieberman, and don't forget that this treaty is the “supreme law of the land.”

    http://www.un.org/disarmament/WMD/Nuclear/pdf/N…

You might want to pay particular attention to Article VI that states: “Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.”

Lieberman has a lot of gall to mention the spread of nuclear weapons after Reagan and Bush Sr.'s military support for Pakistan when we knew they were using that aid for nuclear weapons research and Bush Jr.'s nuclear technology aid to India after they had declared themselves a nuclear armed state by setting off a nuclear weapon which made us a violator of the NPT.

If Lieberman wants to make sure Iran has no incentive to build a nuclear arsenal, he should be talking to his Israeli friends about their nuclear weapons aimed at Iran and their refusal to sign the NPT or accept nuclear inspections. If he doesn't want Russia to pull out of the NPT, maybe we shouldn't be putting any missiles, defensive or not, on Russia's border. Does Lieberman think nuclear war is some kind of zero sum game?

I got to laugh at Obama when he states he is still okay with a nuclear first strike on any nation in violation of the NPT when he is spending billions modernizing the U.S. nuclear arsenal. That act makes the U.S. a violator of the NPT. Does he understand that other nations might see that as extreme hypocrisy to justify dropping out of the NPT or never signing it?

  • http://jammer5spolyrant.wordpress.com/ jammer5

In Vietnam, we used bombs made in the forties, and they weren't well cared for; just stored in bomb bunkers. The nukes we have today are probably cared for better than most people care for their new cars. Anyone who has ever been in the military knows the maintenance procedures inherent to any military equipment. Weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual inspections and maintenance are the norm, so there is no doubt our nukes are in great shape. So that they might be old is not a problem.

The other argument, that this treaty takes away our ability to use nukes on any country signing the non-proliferation agreement, is false. If a country signing the agreement uses biological or chemical weapons against us, we can still use nukes on a case by case basis. People should really learn to both read and understand the language of the treaty, not listen to the idiots who inhabit places like FOX news. Lieberman should retire and start working for his idol, FOX news.

  • MYMY

Probably. Also makes the rockets rocket thereby giving more excuses to keep up the militarization of Israeli society.

  • NoOneYouKnow

Um, what Russian aggression in those ten years? If you're talking about Korea, you'd do well to read some history. The Korean war was provoked by the US to take Red Chinese pressure off Taiwan. From there we got South Korean dictatorships, the KCIA, and Sun Myung Moon's right-wing jihad against sanity, all funded by the “anti-communists” of the West. Western aggression, not Soviet, although I'm sure Stalin was just as evil.

Obama's Nuclear Strategy is apx. 4000 years old!

The Obamunites (aka Democrauts, Socialists, Commies, Liberal-ists, inter-National Socialists) want the destruction of Israel in retaliation for the annihilation of the Amalekites, Amorites, Canaanites, ect.. which occurred around 2000 BC when Moses was commanded by God to remove these barbaric savages from the land.

The Demo-Socialistic-Liberal-Commies we see today are the RE-INCARNATIONS of the Baal worshiping (god of Global Warming) Molech feeding (god of Abortion) child sacrificing barbarians of 1000's of years ago. If you look there is very little difference between the Pagan religions in the past and todays Paganistic Militant Cult of Death (aka Liberalism).

Of course we have newer technology and their sacred rituals like Child Sacrifice are a little different (they burnt the babies inside of Moloch and today Liberals burn the fetus inside a creamatorium) the end results are still the same. A dead burned up baby!

There is very little difference between them except in efficiency. The Obamunites 4000 years ago didn't even kill 3,000 babies per year and the Liberals today murder over 3,000 babies per day!

That is what the Obamunites want to do to the Israelites.
They want to feed them to their FIRE God Moloch

    Senator Lieberman,

As a Senator, you must know that significant new funding has been provided by this administration for the purpose of assuring a safe, secure, and reliable nuclear stockpile. As a former employee of the nuclear weapons complex, I think that the responsible thing would have been to acknowledge that.

  • Paul Stokes

As a Senator, Mr. Lieberman should be aware that the administration has requested significant new funding of the nuclear weapons complex for a safe, secure, and reliable nuclear stockpile.

As a former employee of the nuclear weapons complex, it is clear to me that Lieberman is playing politics with this issue rather than addressing a policy issue.

The Nuclear Treaty is just more political positioning by our POLITICAL PRETENDER. Russia STILL DOESN'T HAVE AS MANY WEAPONS DEPLOYED AS IS ALLOWED in the new treaty and the US WILL BARELY HAVE TO CUT BACK, IF AT ALL.

    ZERO EFFECT ON “GLOBAL SECURITY”!!

  • gusr

As far as our PRESIDENTIAL PRETENDER'S position on IRAN'S NUCLEAR playground:
Obummer and Iran all read from the SAME KORAN, the words and the meaning doesn't change.
The only changes are in the RANGE, STYLE, and SPEED of the individual's JIHAD.
The DIRECTION AND GOAL are the SAME FOR ALL OF ISLAM—–ANNIHILATE THE WEST, and KILL , RAPE, ENSLAVE, TORTURE, MAIM, ALL non-believers in ISLAM.
So, obama is really NOT likely to challenge Iran at all. Allowing US troops to kill a few “expendable” POPPY GROWERS in Afghan and Iraq is just part of the JIHAD FACADE.

  • mick

  • mick

  • d f bizzle

This missile defense business is way to expensive. Its far cheaper to maintain a nuke arsenal for its deterrence value. The only realistic scenario involving Iranian nuclear agression comes in the form of suitcase bombs for which the need for defense shield is obviated…what a waste. And if Iran really were a threat to us or our allies in europe (which it isn't, its all about israel), wouldn't 2/3 or less of our arsenal be sufficient to deter Iran?

Missile defense seems honorable and dignified but creates a classic geopolitical problem of balancing power. To simply throw up a missile defense shield creates a problem for the russians. If the west is “less vulnerable” to incoming missiles, then russia must increase its arsenal to re-establish its deterrence capacity (and it will be infinitely cheaper than creating its own shield). The result is a ratcheting up of arsenals on both sides on something that wastes our economy on something of little use, and continues the legacy of hipocracy as we preach non-proliferation.

I think you should buy a history book. “Russia” wasn’t a nation during the Cold War. And out of the two atomic weapons ever used in warfare in the entire history of the world, 100 percent were used by the United States. I’m not passing judgment on their use, I wasn’t there. But the fact that they were both used on civilian populations and by the United States is indisputable. We have zero room to dictate to others and certainly don’t hold the moral high ground.
