Newly-minted Sen. Scott Brown refuses Palin, Tea Party invite

The honeymoon, it seems, is over.

Sen. Scott Brown, whose unexpected victory saw the end of a legacy of liberalism in Massachusetts, is now refusing an invitation from the Tea Party movement — and Sarah Palin, the very figures who helped Brown score his Senate seat.

Tea Partiers are gathering for a massive rally on Boston Common where Palin is scheduled to speak Wednesday.

Some experts, not surprisingly, are saying Brown has tossed the Tea Party overboard.

“He wants to mainstream himself before the election,” Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia political scientist, told the Boston Herald, which broke the story.

“You’re worried at a rally that there’s a sign, a statement, an incident that’s certifiably cuckoo occurs,” political analyst Lou DiNatale told the paper. “To win re-election, Scott Brown floating to the right is a serious problem.

“And showing up at a Sarah Palin, Tea Party event is not the way to the middle.”

Brown says he can’t attend because of his busy Senate schedule — but that he applauds the “energy and enthusiasm” Palin and the Tea Party protesters bring to his home state.

Stay away from Boston for awhile…Those Tea Party people are nuts…

  • dennycrane

The tories are stepping on each other to get to the top. Hopefully the air vanishes.

  • sambarber

Like rats deserting a sinking ship, so go the candidates that the Teabaggers helped elect…

  • carpdd

I think the freshman Senator is showing good political savvy by staying away from the ever explosive and controversial Palin Party. He was elected in a state that is middle of the road for a reason. I don't necessarily agree with Senator Brown or his politics but I applaud his choice to stay out of the feeding frenzy. Good Luck.

  • samhoustonTX

When Sen. Brown votes his state's interests and not with the Republican gang of “No”, he will be mainstreaming. (And pigs will be flying.)

  • nobodyforpresident

Moron Census in Boston Wednesday. Bring your misspelled signs and Obama/Hitler pictures.

  • erik77

Au contraire, mon frere! Sen Brown is a shrewd opportunist – he saw a chance to get a job 10 steps above his pay grade becuase the Dems made zero effort, ran an unlikeable, arrogant candidate who felt the seat was her inheritance.

I agree what he thinks his states interests are and what the people of Mass. think may diverge quite a bit but I guaranty this – he will come closer to what they want than any other repub in either house or senate.

Besides, this guy caught the gravy train and knows it. Believe me, he wants to get re-eelcted. And I love him for using teabagging the the teaparty- He used them and abandoned them. Way to go.

Considering all this, what don't you like about him?
PS – I am giving you the benefit of the doubt considering you are from Texas but you seem to be intelligent and a concerned citizen.

  • erik77

If you think Massachusetts is middle of the road, maybe you shouldn't be driving. You could really hurt someone.

  • Mum48

    Thanks for the link.

I understand your dilemma. I have some conservative friends, moderate to liberal Republicans similar to Lincoln Chafee, and they really feel that there is no place for them in today’s Republican party. All of them voted for Obama. They had no love for McCain, particularly his hawkishness, but the fact that he chose Palin clinched it for them, in addition to the fact that the very thought of Palin being a heartbeat away from the presidency caused them to lose sleep at night.

  • paddles57

Hi erik77-always enjoy your posts. I'm just wondering if you think Massachusetts leans liberal still. I live here and I'm a little worried that the baggers feel they can come here-is it an indication we're not all that liberal anymore?

  • mgardener

I wonder if the good Senator will be re elected without the help of the tea party.
They poured millions of extra cash and resources into the NY 23rd.
they will not be happy that he has snubbed them in the home of the Tea Party

  • Dr. Matt

It's just a matter of time before the teahadists start making death threats against their former hero.

  • nate roth

My heartfelt congratulations on showing the tea party the door. I wonder, could this be a republican who might vote as he thinks and not as he is told? Ok ok no I didnt start drinking at 7:00 am. Could he be someone who sees the lies of the top tea bags and dont want any part of it?

  • winski

    Just another Klan rally…. yawn….

  • Jay Mac

Guess he couldn't get fitted for jackboots and his Gestapo uniform in time. That is the dres code of these little morons anyway.

  • republicanbalck

I am not one to say that all tea party members are racist or anti-government, but to also say there are no racists or just a tiny few is a complete and utter lie. I mean I don't recall Martin Luther King marching with people in the crowds carrying signs that are even close to what I have seen at Tea Party protests….and to be truthful blacks had more of a reason because they didn't have equal rights. I like Sarah Palin but she has to distance herself from this crowd check the story here:

    http://bit.ly/9kafmP

  • Joe

He also won on the issue of gun rights – not commonly reported.

  • Mum48

“Distance herself from this crowd”? She's one of the main reasons they've grown. She aided and abetted their xenophobic and racist language from the moment she crawled her way onto the national stage back in 2008. She's their mascot AND their mentor.

  • pissedoffcitizen

i hate that these bottom-of-the-gene-pool schmucks are coming to my town…i plan to protest their presence

  • http://twitter.com/shivabeach Shiva

Gun rights are a funny issue. The right wants you to think you will lose your guns and no one is taking them away. You got to love the nuts that went out and spent tons on guns they are going to be able to keep lol.

  • JohnK

It's gotta suck to be a tea bagger in MA and find out your date just left the dance with someone else.

  • barrelhse

So many teabaggers, so few predator drones.

  • barrelhse

    Boston Democrats are excruciatingly racist.

  • republicanbalck

ok you have a point. But there is still hope for change. THey are getting out of hand. More out of hand than when the party began. I am a republican but I don't agree with the tea party. I am almost just like Lincoln republicans.. it's different than today's republicans but I think the radical right is taking over the tea party like a P Diddy takes over a music video. Check out this site its by a Lincoln republican and you will see my point of view.

  • markusgarvey

just be careful…they will probably be armed…

  • paddles57

And how do you know? Off topic too.

  • markusgarvey

the tea party is just a very vocal minority..Limbaugh has 13.5 mil listeners…there are approx 230 mil registered voters and approx 135 mil voted last election..so even if you counted every Limbaugh listener as a teabagger, and that's being generous, the teabaggers have very little political clout…they are just loud and well armed…

  • zogtheobvious

As as a regular frequenter of blogs and news sites such as Raw Story, I watched a lot of Liberals organize to help get Democrats elected to congress. I imagine those Liberals felt much of what the tea partiers are feeling now.

It's an old story: make promises to get elected, then snub your base when you do. In this particular case, (I'm theorizing here) it's a slightly different paradigm- the tea party did not come into existence to help Republicans- at least not to outward appearances. They were the fringe brought in to intimidate Democrats at the Town Hall meetings. They were a tool. They were there to make a lot of noise and try to make it appear that an overwhelming majority of everyday men and women overwhelmingly and violently opposed the Democratic agenda. They weren't actually supposed to align with the GOP or its members.

I wonder if the GOP would feel any shame if one of these radicals they've encouraged pops off and shoots some Democrat down in the street? Obviously they would continue to distance themselves from the teaparty movement. Will we have the kahunas to remind them – publicly, in that all-important mainstream media- that they incited the violence? “Guns don't kill people- people kill people!” is one of their favorite mantras. I can see where they're coming from even if I don't wholly agree with it- it's the idea of taking personal responsibility for your actions. If the gun is just a tool, then it's the responsibility of the person using it to properly manage that tool and make certain it doesn't harm anyone.

Will we have the balls to remind them that the tea party movement was THEIR tool?

  • damixaustex

“Sen. Scott Brown, whose unexpected victory saw the end of a legacy of liberalism in Massachusetts,”

    Huh?
Have you heard of someone called Mitt Romney? How about William Weld, Paul Cellucci or Jane Swift?

There's no end to liberalism. The commonwealth was reacting to it's own health care reforms.

  • ellid

No, the voters were rejected a crappy campaign and a crappy candidate. The outcome would likely have been very different if Mike Capuano had been the Democratic candidate.

Also, I can't believe you are actually calling Bill Weld a conservative. At *most* he's a center right moderate who would last five minutes in today's GOP.

  • damixaustex

You are sort of helping me make my point. The most conservative these folks get in Mass is just right of center. The center pushed far right and is shifting back. Brown is middle of the road just like the rest, and used the Tea Baggers.
Agreed about Bill Weld. He was a communist by today's standards.

  • ellid

What don't I like about Scott Brown?

    1. Anti-abortion.

    2. Anti-health care reform.

    3. Made tasteless jokes about selling daughters to Mitt Romney for his sons.

    4. Owns investment condos in Boston, large, expensive house in Wrentham, and several cars, yet ran ads implying that the trust he used to transport his daughter's horse was his primary vehicle.

    5. Flat out lied about being an independent voice; so far has voted in lock step with GOP on almost everything.

So far the only thing I've liked about him is his disavowal of the teabaggers. Other than that, he's yet another pretty, brainless Republican with too much hair and too many teeth.

  • ellid

I don't see any signs of incipient teabagging out here in the four western counties, including the farming areas in Berkshire and Franklin Counties.

  • imwc

    republican balck?…is that a new race…?…

Good of Brown to stay away from those racist skanks!

  • PATRIOT101

Gather up all of the loose nukes and use them on these kooks!

  • texasaggie

Probably not. More likely he realizes that the famous base isn't nearly big enough to elect him and he needs a lot more from the other side if he's going to go against a real opponent. Besides, who is the base going to vote for?

  • texasaggie

Racism isn't off topic when talking about the Tea Baggers. It is their main unifying idea.

  • 1nancy2

POC: I'm from MA and I'm with you. What a bunch of hateful, dumb creeps.

  • 1nancy2

B: Ha, Good one. Loved it!

  • chrislib

Since Brown and all teagaggers hate America, they should move to Argentina. Descendants of the last bunch of secessionist traitors there will welcome them with open arms. They still hold plantation balls down there, complete with confederate traitor uniforms and GWTW gowns.

  • jimtoday

Typical phony, cowardly GOPer, afraid of the bumper sticker mentality that brought him into office. Wake up Mass. and elect a progressive in 2012, and send Scott Brown home.

He's going to try, but he's not going to be able to get the stink off him.
I remember Sarah endorsing him, and I am not likely to forget either.
Scott Brown is Sarah Palin's “boy” alright, even if he disowns his “momma”.

  • ernie

  • erik77

    Good morning,

I live in NYC and I think Mass is more liberal than almost any other state. In regard to your concern about teabags thinking they can come to Boston (do they think they are Dave Loggins? badf joke but couldn't resist), they think they are gods gift to the world and they can go anywhere. Their time is gonna come but propbably not soon enough.

But don't be concerned about Mass giving up the ghost. In my opinion, it is a combination of shock and disgust at what a sellout Obama is and how he listens to the biggest corporatists and ignores the people who got him elected.

But as I said in my post, Scott Brown deserved to win. Coakley and the National Democratic Party should be ashamed of themsleves. The party should have taken over her campaign.

Dems are up to their usual tricks – their is nothing more unforgivable than an unforced error.

To try and cheer you up, look at it this way – you have the best Republican Senator in the country.

    Cheers,
    Erik

I respect the guy, not a fan or anything.

All you wrote is true but he is still the most moderate repub out there.

And you must admit, Dems deserved to lose the seat.

As Woody Allen said, 90% of success is showing up. MAybe someone should have told coakley that.

Not one of his bigger hits but had one of my all time favorite lines:

brother-in-law (to woody) – you think I am so paranoid self-hating Jew
woody – that's ridiculous – you are the exact opposite of paranoid. You have thge misguided delusion that people like you.

    And that's the Teabags.

  • ellid

The most moderate Republican out there is not Scott Brown from what I can tell. That would be Olympia Snowe or Arlen Specter, who was driven from his party because he has the temerity to think for himself. So far I've seen very little of that from Brown, and unless and until he starts acting like there's a brain in that prettily coiffed head, he's not getting my vote.
