Like you said, millions of games are sold and played…older folks like us have seen the transition in gaming and have adjusted as ADULTS…but I am not sure as a current gamer anymore what I would think if I didn't have the 'legacy' to draw on and simply got plunked down in front of games like CODMW, Farcry2, Mercs, God of War, Battlefield, etc.
I'm not too sure being an avid gamer that I would let my 14 year even play them…in all honesty.

videos games can be addictive if you are already mentally unstable. I have been playing them since I was 8, Never killed my parents over them restricting my play. But then I was never allowed to play violent games. Just as my own children are not allowed to play violent games. Anything stronger then mario is off limits in my home. I have a nephew who is allowed to play violent games and at 11 he attacked my three old for looking at the computer. He thought no one saw and walked off. Lucky i was coming down the stairs and saw him throw my then three year old on to the floor violently. He is banned from our home. He was like a crazy person so filled with rage because a three year old would dare look at his precious game machine. He didn't even touch it just looked throw the crack in the door in our home while his cousin was visiting.
I blame the parents though. If you don't raise your child with limits then don't expect them to accept them at 14.
I use video game restriction all the time and yeah my son huffs and puffs but he shapes up really quick and letting your kid play for a week straight…geeez

I work everyday with kids this age (13-16) as a teacher, and kids that age get VERY addicted to electronic gadgets. You're right that it could very well be about something else. I would expect it to be over a cell phone. Now THAT is a piece of tech they'd kill over! I've seen kids hauled out of school IN HANDCUFFS because they refused to hand over their cell phone after using it in class. They are THAT crazy about these gadgets.

It's not the video game or the cell phone that “makes” them crazy. It's just the thing they focus their crazy addictions on. But we'd still be foolish to just pretend there is no connection between the lunatic attraction and the object to which they are attracted.
