UPDATE: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has confirmed reports that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be suspended for four to six games for violating the NFL’s code of conduct.

The Associated Press reports:

Goodell made the announcement a week after prosecutors decided not to charge Roethlisberger after a 20-year-old college student accused him of sexually assaulting her in a Georgia nightclub in March.

Goodell said the league’s conduct policy gave him the right to impose discipline.

Roethlisberger must undergo a “comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals” and may not attend any team offseason activities until that evaluation is completed.

The suspension could be reduced to four games for good behavior. Sitting out all six games would cost him an estimated $2.8 million.

Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback who led the Pittsburgh Steelers to two Super Bowl titles, will be suspended from four to six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, ESPN reported Wednesday.

Citing unnamed sources, the US-based sports television network said that the banishment will contain conditions that will allow for a reduction to time based upon good behavior by “Big Ben” and compliance with clinical evaluators.

Goodell said Wednesday that there has been no formal decision made upon suspending Roethlisberger in the wake of a 20-year-old college student accusing Roethlisberger of sexual assault after an incident in a Georgia nightclub.

Prosecutors announced last week they would not charge Roethlisberger in the case.
