Ideally, the States should have the right to develop a society that has it's own personality. California could legalize just about everything. The Dakotas would have fair farming and land rights. Montana would remain an open range state. Arizona? Well, it's going to replace Texas as the state that houses the most right wing racists. Putting them all in one state is really not such a bad idea. Although the schools teach that the Civil War was about slavery I do agree with you that it was more about state's sovereignty. I, personally, think too much sovereignty has been lost in the name of empire and that a step back (or two or three) may be required to put this country back on track. Letting the states develop in a way that benefits their citizens will also give the citizens a greater voice in their government–a voice that's severely lacking today.

I agree and encourage [with rick perry] states to secede fro the union. Let them all move to Texas have their own country. They wouldn't have to pay taxes and it could be their own personal white state. It could be called the united white state of Texas. Then let the U.S. cut off all federal funding. Treat the country of Texas like all foreign countries. Issuing visa's and passports to Texans who wish to travel here. So the governor and the folks commenting here think that the totality of black, Indian or Latino history, literature and culture consists of being victimized by white folks? Also, do not assume that only people of the culture studied will take the classes. My white self has taken Latino, Arab and Native American studies classes (in college) and was better and more informed about my world for the effort.

NPR just had a fascinating report from India, relating how young people there save every penny to pay for private tutoring and exam prep so they can lift themselves out of poverty.

So Arizona's kids are supposed to waste their time listening to political propaganda? At what level are their math scores after 12 years of government schooling? How about English? How about their writing skills, their analytical skills, their hours per week of homework?

Let's face it, the NEA union is one of the most powerful left-wing special interests in the country. But they shouldn't RUN the country, and they should teach what they're told by the elected representatives of the state and locality. Whether they are fascist, Nazi, Communist, Christian, or (rarely) Republican, teachers have no right to force their curriculum on students or a school system. That's up to the parents and the voters and their representatives.

“Ethnic studies” might make a useful college major, but our high schools are so far behind in basic skills that such studies just turn into propaganda pools. They should be terminated unless and until the average student possesses analytical skills and historical knowledge on the level of, say, the Chinese or Indian students who bust their butts every day to learn hard science and sound math and solid linguistic and analytical skills.

Until our students catch up, let's stick to the basics and throw out these pet programs that attract third-raters to teach them (why third-rate? Because in math, science, grammar, and history, there's only one right answer. In these classes it's a big bull session pregnant with opportunities for manipulation by a bozo teacher with an ax to grind.

I am a proponent of all schools (public) teaching the same classes across the US. That said, a lot better job could be done on what they teach. That way kids that move could always pick up where they left off were they to move etc.

Most kids in their Senior year have a choice of elective classes. If classes that pertain to the area are provided so what? Myself I think it gives very little meaningful returns as far as an education goes. Its just a class to take to get through school.

I agree with chrisinva to a point. We put far less emphasis on education than the rest of the world. Our parents are barely involved unless the kids are in sports. Our kids spend less time in school that most of the rest of the universe.

It’s easy to say that we should eliminate all ethnic studies programs when your ethnicity is dominant. I understand your point that the United States is a melting pot and that its success is based on inculcating a sense of national unity as opposed to one based on ethnicity, race, previous nationality etc … I tend to agree with that. But I’m not going to use that rationale to deprive Chicano kids of a program that gives them a sense of identity and pride. Go to any major U.S. city and you will find Little Chinas, Italys, Russias, Israels, Egypts etc … You can’t–and shouldn’t–suppress people’s connection to the “old country,” and any attempt to do so probably makes those ties stronger. I don’t support movements that waste time agitating for a takeover of the Southwest or movements based on hate and bitterness. But I also think it’s disingenuous to call for the abolition of ethnic/cultural studies programs when the kids in those classes are being bombarded with your culture every single day non-stop.

That said, I don’t think it’s fair to tell a majority Chicano school district that they can’t offer students courses that teach them about their ethnic heritage. I understand your point completely: the information is out there and readily available and that it’s up to individuals to pursue those interests on their own time. But you could say that about all information taught in school. Why teach anything? It’s all out there in libraries and on the internet. I don’t think availability is the question. It’s about who chooses what is supposed to be edifying and relevant to particular groups of students. If teachers are fomenting or tolerating hatred and separatism in those classes then of course that has to be discouraged. But if it’s a matter of students blowing off some steam then what’s the harm? The Jews did indeed retain and transmit their cultural heritage over a couple thousand years, primarily because they were horribly discriminated against and it was the only way to resist complete cultural disintegration and assimilation. I don’t think any ethnic group should be forced to the point of cultural extinction to defend and keep their roots as a people. In the US, the past has shown that if a people are allowed to live free and are allowed to be who they want to be, successive generations tend to become more generically “American” and less self-identified with their country of origin. Let the kids have their class.
