I'm obviously sitting in front of my computer typing instead of getting out and doing something myself, but I do honestly hope that these men and people like them get people thinking about what's happening to our democracy, and what can be done to defend it.

Actually, though, I'm all in favor of corporate personhood, so long as that personhood comes with all the same plusses and minuses that come of being a breathing human.

You do something wrong, you get convicted of it, and you report for prison during which time you do nothing of your own volition. Let's say an equivalent is your board of directors gets switched over to Congress and 100% of all profits you make go to the US Govt during that period, in addition to any punitive penalties. Maybe throw upper management into a physical prison, too, just to add some incentive. It'll be interesting to see how many stockholders approve of doing potentially illegal things at that point.

And if you get convicted of a severe crime–say, kill someone–which has the death penalty, your corporate person gets immediately taken over 100% by the government (I'd say liquidated outright, but that would just hurt the employees), including all stock. Watch overnight as investment banks everywhere scramble to ditch any companies with that kind of liability, and to put into place systems to prevent illegal doings.

Alternately you could just directly apply any crimes to upper management, whether they were complicit or not–your corp kills someone, CEO goes to jail for life. Betcha that would change the way corporate leadership does things when it comes to oversight.

Corporations as people is what happens when you elect Republicans. They hate government and love business and thus appoint justices who agree with them. The result: Republican Supreme Court Justices who decide, overruling previous decisions, that corporations are entitled to the rights of people. Unfortunately, since virtually all corporations are international not national they are owned or run by foreigners. The result of that is Arabs, Chinese, Russians, etc. own corporations in American and can contribute to American elections. I don't know about you, but the idea that Communist Chinese or Arabs can, through American-based versions of their corporations, give money to American politicians scares the hell out of me. Thank George Bush for that one.

The comparison between the White House and the Kremlin is apt. The difference is, the White House has learned how to legalize their criminal behavior, while at the same time maintaining a facade of Constitutional democracy. In fact, through the corporate media they've even succeeded in creating “followers”, enthusiastically endorsing and embracing militarism, authoritarianism and even neo-fascism, rebranding, repackaging and paradoxically evangelizing and preaching these various pillars of totalitarianism as deeply rooted, all-American principles of 'freedom' and 'democracy'.

Truly Orwellian doublethink, and to be quite honest, as a result, it's nearly impossible to distinguish the White House from the Kremlin these days. However, paradoxically the vaunted and hypocritical “moral superiority” over the Kremlin amongst the clueless, brainless lemmings that call themselves citizens is ever so prevalent. It's a bizarre form of pathological denial, self delusion and cognitive dissonance.

It was not a stupid idea, it was an evil plan that worked exactly as they wanted. If there's anything I know about them, it's that they're not stupid just evil.

If you don't think Democrats are also about doing the bidding of corporate America for the bucks, you are really fooling yourself. The whole health care reform effort with the mandate to buy insurance, but without offering a publicly-owned alternative, was solely about providing corporate welfare for the private insurance industry, with perks for the private hospital industry and big pharma. Ron Wyden (D-OR) was one of the first Democrats to push for exactly this two years earlier, and he worked with Republicans to support his health care bill, most aspects of which (mandates, no public option, state-level insurance exchanges rather than a national exchange) ended up in the final bill. The best thing is how the Democrats actually worked with corporate America and Republicans to get the bill passed. Corporate America and the pro-corporate Republican elite co-opted the Tea Party movement to oppose a publicly-owned alternative, and so the Democratic leadership at both ends of Pa. Ave. propagandized how they were standing up to “anti-reform” forces by giving corporate America and pro-corporate Republicans exactly what they wanted: A mandate and welfare for the private insurance industry. And stupid Democrats out in America bought it. Hopefully the Monahans will find their voice to speak out against the corrupt pro-corporate agenda of both parties who actually just want the money.
