Arizona cracks down on teachers with heavy accents

Arizona has been under fire for a controversial anti-illegal immigrant law and now its Department of Education is embarking on a course of action that many critics also believe is being enforced in a discriminatory fashion.

“The Arizona Department of Education recently began telling school districts that teachers whose spoken English it deems to be heavily accented or ungrammatical must be removed from classes for students still learning English,” The Wall Street Journal reported.

“This is just one more indication of the incredible anti-immigrant sentiment in the state,” said Bruce Merrill, a professor emeritus at Arizona State University who conducts public-opinion research.

….

Nearly half the teachers at Creighton, a K-8 school in a Hispanic neighborhood of Phoenix, are native Spanish speakers. State auditors have reported to the district that some teachers pronounce words such as violet as “biolet,” think as “tink” and swallow the ending sounds of words, as they sometimes do in Spanish.

These teachers “are very good educators who understand the culture” of their students,” said Ms. Agneessens, Creighton’s principal. “Teachers should speak grammatically correct English,” she acknowledged, but added, “I object to the nuance of punishment for accent.”

“It doesn’t matter to me what the accent is; what matters is if my children are learning,” said Luis Tavarez, the parent of sixth- and eighth-graders at Creighton.

Christina Parsons was born in Brazile and has taught the English Language Learners class in Tucson for more than 20 years, but she told CNN that she has been subjected to an audit based on her ability to pronounce English words.

“They just walked in in the middle of class,” she told CNN’s Thelma Gutierrez.

State School Superintendent Tom Horne denies the crackdown is based on teachers’ accents. “We are not going after any accents including Spanish accents. It has to be faulty English. If students are being taught English and they’re going to refer to a comma as a ‘coma’ people are going to misunderstand them,” said Horne.

But studies have shown that non-native teachers actually make better educators, according to University of Arizona professor Roseann Gonzales. She says that the ability to pronounce the language is not the most important aspect to learning.

“Language is very contextual. We depend on the context to understand what words mean,” Gonzales told CNN.

Parsons is still waiting on the results of her audit. “The Arizona Department of Educations gives us a certificate saying, ‘Yes, you are certified to teach.’ After that they say, ‘No, I don’t think you can do it so I’m going to go into the classroom and see if you are doing a good job.’”

CNN anchor Kyra Phillips disagrees with the new policy. “Would a guy like the Governor of California be allowed to teach kids how to learn English? Arnold’s Austrian accent is as thick as his biceps but his English seems to be just fine,” remarked Phillips.

“I was also going to give a graduation speech in Arizona this weekend. But with my accent, I was afraid they would try to deport me,” CBS News reported the Republican governor joked in his speech at Emory University.

“Their accents reflect who they are and where they came from. What’s more important? What teachers say or how they say it?” Phillips wondered.

Please, take a look at statistics before you claim we’ve entered a “Season of the Witch.” Modern culture has many times less violence than even several hundred years ago – especially against family members. We’ve become less violent as cultures as time has gone by. This is the effect of a stable civilization. Remember: the opposite of civilization isn’t anarchy or primitivism, it’s war.

Actually in Arizona case it’s because they want to make the State of Arizona uncomfortable to people of hispanic origin, pure and simple. They took an inch and are now taking a mile, they and the state is acting like exactly as many have said, a backwoods ignorant ran state. I feel sorry for the next election for republicans in that state, because people will be voting them out. It’s almost as if Arizona’s governor and state officials are challenging Obama to get into this fight. People wonder why our society have so many wacko’s and crazies running around doing stuff, just look at the ones in charge of leading our govt. and/or in charge of how things work.

Take for example China, we have been seeing a rise in children being attacked by individuals (male all of them). In the US you are hearing fathers and/or boyfriends killing their significant other and their whole family (did you hear about the guy in New Zealand a few months back who found out he had aids and decided to infect his wife with a needle because he was afraid of her leaving him), etc. etc.. What we are seeing is the end result of policies and programs and lack of responsibility that many in our society and other societies have allowed to flourish to the point that it makes their people literally insane. In the case of China, most if not all the men in the attacks had inadequacies in finding women or a mate (can’t or couldn’t support them). With the one child policies in that country you have 100 million or more men that can’t find a woman. In the US it’s almost the same but not quite. Men who can’t provide or have lost the ability to provide or just the woman changes her mind and wants to leave or a divorce, feel like they are losing something that is “theirs”. Then you hear about them killing their wife/girlfriend, killing their whole family, killing everybody in the house in a post divorce or dump rage etc. etc.. We have been told that if your not doing this or don’t have that then your nothing.

It’s not the season of the witch, it’s the season of reality that is coming into being. The reality of the real world compared to the propaganda that has for decades been shoved down our throats. The world is changing and the old paradigms are eroding, and it’s scaring the ones in Arizona who think that hispanics will be the majority in the state. It’s scaring the chinese that they will have to think more out of the box and get their men to think about looking outside their country and/or race for love and companionship. And it scares men in the US that their woman is leaving them or might leave them so they attack with the old motto “if I can’t have you no one will”.

It more than irritates me to see so many illegals come in and ,basically, drive citizens out of entire categories of work,eg: construction.I have friends that cant get work, while illegals are hired at slave wages. Still, I am acquainted with several illegal workers in the state that I live in now, and I’ve always been impressed with their willingness to bear many hardships just to be here and work for their families in L America. I could never rat them out. Life is full of contradictions. While we need massive border security AND a pathway to legalization for those already here, as long as Mexico is an economic and social basketcase , the flood of illegals will continue unabated.Type your comment here.

Neither George W. Bush nor his father, GHW, could pronounce the most important word to the human race under their command – “NUCLEAR”

It's OK to be in position to destroy the earth, using weapons you cannot even pronounce, but not to teach English.

    Got it!

  • chrisinva

I had a TA in college chemistry who was totally incomprehensible. he shouldn't have been there. Ditto languages. If a student learning English has a teacher who can't pronounce it, that teacher is unqualified to teach English. Ditto Spanish: someone who hasn't mastered the (relatively easy) pronunciation of Castellano shouldn't be teaching it.

I am also an Arizonan and I don’t see any huge problems with illegal immigration. I do see a problem that is actually decreasing in border crossings. We have a huge problem with law enforcement not busting the employers who make it desirable to take the chances they take to cross the border in hopes of a better life in the US. The crime rates in Arizona have actually been going down contrary to what the Sheriff of Nuttingham, Joe Arpaio. would like people to believe.
The illegals get shaft by employers with low wages or no wages. They pay their sales taxes rarely seek government services out of fear of deportation, if they get a phony SSN, the money withheld eventually stays in the SSA coffers. Those responsible for these laws are doing two things, take the pressure off the failure of the Republican led Legislature to manage the state budget to the point of cutting education and social services to those at the bottom. That doesn’t bother them but the fact that we just had to pass a 1 cent / dollar
tax increase to keep the schools and law enforcement solvent was done during a Republican administration.

It's more than Arizona… The last couple of years has been weird throughout the global community. Look at the children who have been attacked in China, the large numbers of fathers killing their families in the US, social unrest breaking out all over the globe. I don't know what the reasons are, but have been referring to it as “The Season of the Witch” for lack of a better phrase that describes the sudden social climate that has been manifesting itself all over the globe.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it sure was better for the eight long years of G.W. Bush when the borders were controlled or during Bush I when everything was quiet on the border and especially
during Reagan when he gave Amnesty to 4,000,000 illegals. Its only been since Obama that this is an issue…good conservatives know how to handle the issue.

  • Laura

I was a teacher at a high school in Houston. Because of the location, we had students from hundreds of countries so we had many, many English Language Learner classes, from beginner (no English) to advanced. There were teachers that were non-native speakers and American teachers. I will say that I had several students come to me complaining that the American teachers were not able to help them with questions. After talking to these teachers, they had a very close minded idea of how they should teach and how students learned. It was obvious that they had never had to learn another language and were extremely ethnocentric.

They should force the teachers that don't have a accent to learn a new one THEN speak it without an accent themselves. You'd see how quickly this would change.

  • jeffery1949

Good post, Laura. It goes to the heart of the matter. The whole notion of an “accent” is measuered against Standard American Dialect used by broadcasters, which is indeed an accent. I speak it, it comes from the Midwest. All “accents” are realtive to some standard. People in India would think I have an accent. It's silly to think that just because somebody has phonological differences in how they form their vowels and consonents, that by conclusion theyr'e less bright. It's really nonsense. If somebody is going to teach effectively, they should know and understand the dialectal qualities of their students, not to condemn them but so that they understand the nuance between formal (SAE) and informal speech. It's like if you want to have dinner with a client or dignitary you might say, “Have you eaten yet?” But if you want to have dinner with, say, your best friend, you might say, “Jeet yet?” People should revel in the beauty of speech. Hasta por hoy!

I am an Arizonan. I drink bottled water. We have huge problems here with illegal immigration. This law does nothing to solve any of those problems. It is a shame that the federal government has left it up to the rednecks to find solutions. The rednecks decided to give themselves the power to enforce federal law. This law mimics federal law. It is not the law so much that bothers me….it will be turned over….it is the fact that we have still done NOTHING to control immigration.

  • Jason F.

Wait, does that mean that if I, who has a extremely heavy Boston accent were to teach in Arizona that I would be subject to this law?
I mean I do speak differently than others do in this country, I drop R's left & right, everythingh as an “ah” on the end, I drop G's off words, those are just a few examples of how my accent would impact my communication with students so maybe it's not just foreign teahcers who would be impacted by this law.

And that statement is as ignorant as Tom Horne. The reaction to the nativist legislation has been strong in southern AZ and in other parts of the state. The nativist agenda is driven by right-wingers in Maricopa County which includes much of the population of the state. They have made a disaster of the state budget while legalizing sparklers and concealed weapons. on the other hand, a number of cities (including ours, Bisbee) have condemned SB1070 and Pima County)Tucson and vicinity) Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has declared that he believes the law (SB 1070) to be illegal and he does not intend to enforce it. Tom Horne is running for attorney general so he has to be a tough guy. He is, for the most part, a posturing political opportunist. How would Albert Einstein or Henry Kissinger rated by this stupid law???

Well, well I should have watched he video first. The Librofascists have misrepresented the intent of the teacher examination. The check is for proper pronunciation and use of grammar. Not one race category is targeted. The report is an absolute sham; one of the best examples of shoddy, biased journalism. But, it would be considered a masterpiece for FOX NEWS.

In other countries, many non-native speakers of English teach EFL to students, and that's fine. We have non-native Spanish speakers here who teach Spanish, non-francophones who teach French, etc. and that's fine. HOWEVER, when students come to an ENGLISH-speaking country (USA, Canada, Australia, UK) they should expect to be taught by a native speaker of English (any pronunciation as along it is from someone who speaks English as a native!

Bottled water is often less safe than tap water or is simply tap water sitting in off gassing plastic bottles. Instead consider a filter on your tap water, why pay for water when it is no safer than tap and contributes to wasted plastic that ends up everywhere? Consider boycotting bottled water. Water should be free and clean and paying for it in a Logo-ed plastic bottle by a soft drink company doesn’t ensure it to be cleaner than municipal tested water. It’s sad when consumers trust Coca Cola to have cleaner water than the public water supply. Then again people drink that nasty (in my opinion) probably not so healthy diet soda. Research this upsetting issue of corporate water.

Re: Dolly Lanna – that fact that you can write a comment, even if you cannot spell, “grammar” properly, means you need to thank the teachers who taught you. Regional accents abound in our country and are part of our strength. If you want to protest, write the media and comment on the fact that newscasters have made our language imprecise and flawed, dumbing down English to its lowest point. Most Southern people, of which I am one, speak excellent English. It is true that some areas speak a form closer to Elizabethan English, but it is still English. Arizona is refusing to face the fact that in a few years, white Anglo-Saxon Protestant Americans will be in the minority. It might be nice to think that the ones Arizona is persecuting would remember us with fondness and not the hatred Arizona is showing them. We ALL, even Native Americans, come from other countries. Most us us have ancestors who would have been kept out by this law.

Essentially Mexican/Hispanics are the new blacks. It’s even now there are place; esp. in the south; where a person of color is not welcomed in an area. Or you a mixed couple is looked upon unfairly for wanting to be happy. Why when there are discussion like this can people not remember where we came from. EVERY BLOODLINE in the great country comes from people wanting a better life or seeking something more the ordinary.
Illegals are not the only ones costing this country money. There are lowlifes who would rather sell their food stamps for money to buy drugs. We have people who have no vehicle insurance causing accidents and causing me to still have to pay to make my vehicle work again. We waste money or pork barrel projects, to pay for lavish retirement payout to senators. We are a wasteful country…Point Blank! And I am not trying to say I haven’t been wasteful in my lifetime either.
We together make this country dirty. I don’t know how many times I watch people just dump their used trash and don’t care about it. There are people who willing dump animals along the road side hoping it will become someone else’s problem.
This issue brought up is about educating our children in this country. And I get them saying well if a person is trying to learn English, having an accent can deter the child from learning the correct pronunciation. But, to counter that, most of my life I was raised by some member in my family with thick Korean accents and I speak English perfectly. I have had teachers from the south; north from different countries and it did not inhibit my ability to learn to speak properly. Another issue; now let’s get down to it; is the ability of any teacher (if this really is the truth) to speak English properly all the time. And let’s be real people; who always speak proper English 24/7/365? It is a sad situation, that with all that’s going on it seems as if the state is on a witch hunt. But they want to do right; they just might be going about it the wrong way.
The reality is everyone illegal or citizen jacks this country up!! While there are citizens and illegal’s doing all they can to make it right!

  • msa

Pure Nonsense!!!!!…..this speaks volumes that the new recently anacted law got nothing to do with seeking security for the state of Arizona, rather is an effort by shameless bigots to discriminate against those who are not like 'them'. What does accent got to do with anything? By the way,its an accent according to what? Whats the perfect benchmark that should be employed/used to gauge whether one is speaking perfect English? The proponents of this racist, bigoted law should be subjected to English exams the said teachers did. I bet most of these so called leaders have terrible grammar and will not even pass a sixth grade exam.I suppose, the bigots should also roll out the standard against which any one person can at least check against especially if they are willing to apply for a teaching job in Arizona.

Everyone needs to wake up and take a history/anthropology class.

    1) Native Americans did NOT ‘displace even earlier arrivals’ as they were the FIRST! Now, you can argue that there were multiple ‘waves’ of peoples coming to the American continents, but its unclear if any of them ‘displaced’ already settled inhabitants from the ‘first’ wave or simply ‘passed through’ to other parts of North, Central and South America (as we call them today).

    2) Europeans (English, French, and Spanish being the main players initially) DID DISPLACE NATIVE AMERICANS when they arrived initially without incident (from what we know of historical records), but then violently through warfare and non-violently through disease. We also ‘displaced’ French and Spanish claims on land that is now formally part of the USA. All the others had as much initial ‘sovereignty’ as the next, but we just fought and killed more of them than they did ‘us’.

Why do ‘illegal immigrants’ come to the US? Because many are literally ‘dirt poor’. They come here because living in the US is better than living on the edge of survival. If YOU were in a similar straight YOU TOO would go to the nearest place you could to escape the desperate poverty to either live and/or send money home to your family.

I’m all for ‘legal immigration’, but we have no sane policy for that right now. And while I may objectively like everyone to ‘play by the rules’ I also understand that desperate people will do what they must to survive. Maybe if we had some sane immigration policy. Maybe if all the corporations that hire illegal immigrants could only do so if they provided a ‘path towards citizenship’, maybe if they payed a living wage instead of a wage that only someone from a dirt poor foreign country would take because its exponentially better than what they could earn at home legally without being involved in the drug trade or prostitution, then maybe we could solve the immigration problem.

Think about that for a while before you blather on.

  • cirqus

Oh yes, the colonists were welcome in many places, until they started killing natives. Seriously, read some history books and stop spouting ignorant crap.

  • cirqus

You need to read David Lynch’s comment above. There are many Americans with thick heavy accents who would not ‘pass’ in AZ as teachers. Lets take the Boston area, for example. I’m sure there are many excellent English teachers who consistently drop their ‘r’s because that is the local accent. Should we fire them too? And when you say the word ‘aunt’ do you say ‘ant’? Who about ‘wash’; is it pronounced ‘wersh’? The ‘ridiculous crap’ that is making headlines is because it is ridiculous crap to be certifying teachers because of their accent!

I believe that you have missed the point! Throughout this great land many cultures and races have come to make the United States what it is today. Diversity is what makes us such an attractive place to visit, live, raise a family, and so on.
If this debate had been carried out in eastern United States schools would we be having the same conversation?
Culture and language are at the root of self-identification. I certainly cannot believe that “we” want everyone to look the same, talk the same, and think the same.
If we are talking about improving our schools I believe that we have to start by involving families and communities. Schools are not daycares but are often time used as such.
Students are not held accountable for their learning parents expect that their children recieve good grades.
As an educator it is going to take much more than “tink” to derail a child’s success in the classroom.

Not true, descendents of Native Americans and the indiginous people of Alaska ARE native inhabitants. Putting that aside, yes immigration made this country, but – as a previous poster said – it was LEGAL immigration. When the Italians, Spanish, Eastern European folks came over, they were registered. Remember a little place called Ellis Island? If you want the rights and priveleges of this country, you be willing to accept the RESPONSIBILITY of becoming a LEGAL citizen. That means paying taxes, voting to start. I live in Texas, so we have a similar issue as with Arizona. When I go to the grocery store and my cashier can’t communicate with me is I ask a question because she cannot speak ANY English, I see a problem. Or I cannot give basic instructions to our landscaper at work without a translator. I used to work at a hospital, and I can’t tell you how many medical bills we wrote off because of illegal immigration. Sad. I’m all for embracing cultures and welcoming the destitute, but if you care about this country, take the pride in becoming a citizen.

Oh, and for all of you saying our Founding Fathers were immigrants. Yes, they were. But, they saw the importance of setting up a government to ensure the rights and liberties were protected. I pay taxes, I vote. How many of those protesting can say the same? Not discriminating, just saying. Funny how people want to go self-righteous and argue for rights when you are breaking federal law.

And, I am not Christian. However, one of the TEN COMMANDMENTS states “Thou shalt not bear false testimony.” How is being in this country illegally, breaking the law different than lying?

Your spelling, grammar, and puncutation are lacking. Oh wait, it’s probably not your fault. You were probably taught by someone with an accent. While I agree that we need to take action on illegal immigration, I do not believe anyone should be punished for having an accent. Does this mean that someone from New York or New Jersey can’t teach in Arizona? What about someone from Arizona going to teach in Louisiana? Is that how far we have come in the U.S.? Dialects and accents are different from state to state. How do we determine how far is too far?

The English language is not the same as the American language. Americans pronounce their vowels completely different. In American, we say “howss” for house. In English, all the vowels are pronounced–”ho-ew-ss”. So, would a teacher from England also be fired because she doesn't speak American? Arizona is showing the rest of the country just why American arrogance isn't a good thing.

Some people don’t have the means to do what your family did, though. To some, who have starving families, an illegal trip across the border is worth it. My family is Asian and here legally as well. We speak English at home too. I agree that people should try to take legal routes to get here, but that isn’t always possible. My issue is with taking teachers out of classrooms because they have an accent. I teach minority students, and the reason I can get so much out of them is because we share being a minority, and can all speak in their language when needed. Minority teachers connect with minority students. To take a good teacher out of a classroom because you disagree with the way they pronounce words is ridiculous.

Constitutional rights? If you are here illegally, you are not entitled to our government’s liberties. Sorry. Get legalized, pay your taxes and then you can claim any of the Constitution’s protection you want.

Constitution also states you have to pay taxes. You plan on advocating all the illegal immigrants start dropping their cash on the IRS doorstep? Thought not

Here’s another thought. the Constitution also lays out a detailed election process. If you are a registered voter, you can participate in that process and DO something about our governemnt instead of yelling and crying on TV about how unfairly you are being treated. I think it’s unfair I have to learn Spanish or quit my job because there has been a boom of Spanish-speaking individuals move into the neighborhood. But you’re right, we’re being unjust to the folks living here illegaly, driving without auto insurance, using Medicaid or stiffing hospitals so they have to eat medical bills. Bad us *sarcasm*

The Ten Commandments are for religion. In this country, much to the dismay of Texas, we have separation of church and state.

And yes, Native Americans DID migrate here. They had to cross a land bridge to get here. Once in North America, they migrated across the continent and settled there. Granted, it was a long time ago, but the point is that they migrated as well.

You are kidding yourself if you think all the people who came to America came through Ellis Island, and came through legally. Go back past the Progressive Era when there was no Ellis Island. People came here for religious freedom, for profit, or were forced to come as slaves.

Like I said before, I don’t think people should come over illegally, but if that is there only choice, then come over. After all, the Statue of Liberty says “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breath free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Notice the lack of the sentence “as long as they have papers”.

Perhaps Arizona should establish verbal skills as a criterion for certification rather than sending auditors into classrooms of currently certified teachers and move to reassign them because of the way they speak.
The anger being expressed in AZ is surely creating problems for their citizens but is a sign of the times. Legal rulings are on the horizon and will not be favorable to AZ.

Sorry, we are not all illegals… my family has been in the United States since the Revolutionary War. So there are some families here that actually built this country… so don’t assume it is just sitting here open to anyone who wants to take from it. Our great country has limited resources. We cannot support the entire world. All other countries have rules regarding immigration, but for some reason some people think the USA is a free for all … just come in and take whatever you want. Who do you think did those dirty jobs before the rash of illegal immigrants?? Americans did those jobs. Do you really think we are incapable of taking care of ourselves? Uneducated people of all races, but they were Americans, did those jobs. So don’t assume our economy would somehow just stop without illegals doing our dirt work … this country is a melting pot of people that legally are Americans, that means either born here , or applied, and were granted citizenship .. it is not a free for all …go home then come back legally… period… and if you think that is racist, or being a biggot, then I guess all other counties in the world (including Mexico) are racists and biggots, because all other countries have laws regarding legal immigration.

See, after reading everyone’s opinion and the article itself, I have to agree with Jane. If they are teaching our students about “comas” coming after a word, then we start having a problem. Yes, we know EXACTLY what they meant but there’s a difference in teaching the language and knowing it. They should come hand to hand. I would never try to become a Spanish teacher due to my poor grammar, accent, etc. Teach what you know.

Mexico is a damn basket case in some areas more than others–Monterrey, Mexico was jokingly called Texas’ most southern city–due to the fact Texas conducts a hell of a lot of business with that one city in Mexico, the northern Mexicans are not as poor as the southern and western Mexicans, still their leaders are dumb for accepting NAFTA. Would we be so ticked off if the Mexicans were rich would people complain? But, instead only their leaders are wealthy (as sell outs to the multinationals) sound familar?

I don’t think anyone is trying to tear down the country…and I don’t think anyone is trying to make your children learn another language unless it is an elective or part a curriculum. No one is asking you to conform. The point is that a person with an accent can teach effectively and beautifully. I had many teachers and professors that had accents…it posed no problem, whatsoever.

This sort of thing makes me ashamed to be an American. I would also like to state that we have as Americans opened our doors and our arms to the unfortunate of the world — anyone ever read what's on the Statute of Liberty? It's not the illegal aliens' fault that America is still viewed as a country with streets of gold. The people who willingly employ illegals are the ones we should be after! They are (supposedly) Americans (I believe, in most cases) looking for a fast buck by employing poor people who cannot stand up for themselves. Are we all forgetting where WE came from and why? Come on people! Where are all the old hippies when you need them — love, people, love. Let's cut the crap. But let's let Arizona become a separate country and then we can invade it and fix it!!! LOL. Be kind to each other, people. It matters. It matters a whole lot. Mike, if you're still in AZ, hope you've changed.

  • Legend

I’m lost on the connection between illegal immigration and schools turning out students that can’t speak proper English. Actually I’m lost on the connection for everything you said. Doesn’t the Bible teach us to welcome all? Under your theory the Romans were justified in crucifying Jesus because he was “different” and didn’t follow their laws? And Iraqi’s and Afghani’s are jusitifed in killing our soldiers because we invaded their countries, which surely must be against the law of their land. So, following your logic, if the laws of Iraq justify killing invaders, and the Bible says follow the laws of the land we are in, then you support the killing of American troops? Or are what you saying is that the teachings of the Bible only apply when you agree with them?

  • rebecca

  • bamagirl

I am from the deep south and have been told that my accent is sometimes not understandable. But by whose standards do we determine “understandable”? If children are getting an education and learning something useful what difference does it make what the teacher's accent is? The proof should be in the test scores of the students – not in how the teacher is pronouncing the words!

  • esbee

I support AZ!!! They are being bashed for not being “politically correct” . Why not obey the law? That is what the controversy is about. Now they are trying to educate the illegals but how dare you take away their accent?!?!?! So every thing that AZ does now will be put under the microscope of public opinion. Why aren't we up in arms against countries where human rights are trampled on, like the Islamic countries that do not want girls educated at all? What is education about if not to improve yourself? It is like having teachers teach math that can't add or teachers teach language arts that do not know what nouns are because you might “offend” them. Ridiculous crap that makes the headlines today, isn't it!?!?!

  • http://www.badattitudes.com/MT Buck Batard

This is so disgusting. I say peCAN because I grew up in the South, but here in the Northy they say PeCAAN. But which pronunciation is “correct”? That crowd running the schools in Arizona are a bunch of ignorant kooks. THEY should be the ones fired. But just watch. They'll be going after those who speak gaily next.
This is not the country I grew up in. Some of my best teachers had foreign accents and couldn't pronounce certain words correctly. But anyone who understands how language is learned understands that in the first ten years or so of one's life, there are certain sounds that we learn to pronounce and we do not learn the ability to pronounce other sounds and it is almost impossible to learn them properly. Now someone hand me my ink pin “as my wife accuses me of pronouncing “pen”. This is as subjective as deciding whether someone is “Aryan”. Those folks in Arizona are heading towards not just fascism, but outright Nazi like behavior, if they have not yet arrived there yet.

I don't see the problem here. If students are learning English, they need to listen to correctly spoken English, not heavily accented English. Teachers who are going to be teaching the English language need to be able to speak and pronounce that language correctly.

  • G. Conner

Why all the fulling around?? Simply pass a law to make English the only “official” language, such as was done in one Canadian state (only French is officially recognized there.) If you then either do not speak English or do not speak it properly, you are out of a job. So simple that it was simply missed.
Everyone is welcome to this country–legally–and as long as you speak the language.

For all you fools who think it's ok to be bilingual here in America!!! Let your liberal children go to a school where teachers don't speak proper english and be taught, because I don't want my child being taught a language that is not what the majority of this county speaks.. There are alot of different cultures in this great country and if they think this country is their own then they should conform to the english language…Not ask the rest of us to conform to the language of the country that they don't want to live in anymore… Let the mexicans go back to their so called great country and help to build it up. Don't keep trying to tear the US down…Period… I have an Italian heritage but I AM AMERICAN FIRST…

It's unfortunate that there is a small but very vocal minority in this country who all of sudden think they and their ancestors were the “original” inhabitants of this land. All but the true Native Americans came from somewhere else. Yes, all who are now clamoring to “cleanse” the country of those here illegally are descendants of “immigrants”. It's would be interesting to know how many of those who want to close the borders and deport those who are different claim to be Christian. As a believer myself, I can only say that those who truly follow the teachings of Christ should welcome and care for the alien, the orphan, and the widow, with no “strings attached.” A country that has blessed as richly as ours should be ashamed of such behavior. May God truly bless the whole world, no exceptions.

While they're at it, can they get rid of American-born teachers (and public spokespersons) who cannot correctly use the -ly suffix on adverbs and who confuse when to use reflexive pronouns? I once had an English teacher with a heavy Italian accent whose grammar was quite superior to those native speakers with their “Philly” accent and approach to grammar! (On another note, the governor of California is no more qualified to teach than a teacher is qualified to govern. I like his accent, however, only people educated to teach should do so. I see a doctor regulary but don't assume that merely receiving the service qualifies me for the job!)

Are you serious “and our schools are turning out students that can’t speak proper English or who can’t even graduate from high school”?!!!!! Do you believe only immigrants (illegal and legal) are the only people who cannot speak “proper” English or graduate high school? Is your head in a hole? Listen to the people around you and you can hear all of the slang/improper english and take a good look at our drop out rate, who is really dropping out? It seems to me as though too many US citizens think so highly of themselves that they forget where they came from and how fortunate they are to not have to struggle as hard as some. And lucky for us that we were born here, imagine if you had to pay the exorbitant fees charged by the Department of Homeland Security (which all third world people can afford to pay, I mean, really, why leave your country if you have the money to live comfortably there? Think about it…) and wait the several years for them to finally decide to look at your case and then if you are lucky, actually approve it; all so that someone like you or the ignorant people of this country can still harrass you because of the way you look or because of your accent. Did your grandfather speak perfect English? Does he (or did he) get harrassed because of it or his appearance? Was he questioned for his “papers” everytime he was pulled over because of his race? And what is our “way of life”? I also think we are doing just fine putting ourselves into bankruptcy, and who are we supporting, last time I checked, illegal immigrants were not eligible for any government benefits, but our trash seems to be utilizing it quite well. And you should also check on the spelling of “concerned”. Now that I am feeling a little bit disgruntled with my race I will go back to work with the people who work like dogs for jobs with low pay that “our people” don’t want to do after 2 days and would prefer to live off the system or unemployment. Have a great day!

I grew up in Miami, which is as immigrant heavy as you get and all of my english teachers spoke perfect english- sometimes with a slight latin accent, but it was good enough to send me to a top university. I dont see how this isn't something that is taken care of where they hire the teachers.

It doesn't matter if all but Native Americans came from somewhere else (and, of course, Native Americans not only came from someplace else, they displaced even earlier arrivals). What matters is what is happening NOW. As a sovereign nation we have an absolute right to determine who enters, how they enter, and how many may enter. By your logic, within a few years, we would have over three billion people in the USA.

Why not sell all of your possessions, and go to the Third World and help them there? It seems that Jesus suggested this, but hardly anyone can ever be bothered to do it.

while i can empatize with you we are all illegals because we all came from some where else if the saying hold up a litter that was born in an oven is not bread we must stop and think and do things in a dignified manner because those illegals built the country they did and still do the dirty work we did not want to do because we taught we were too great so the immigrants came and clean our mess is the econemy thet made us realize we can clean toilets for $6.00 an hour how good.

IF any of you look at the laws in place for imigration, then you would understand the problem. They come and steal our jobs, give birth here so their children can be given many oppurtunities that white children won't even be afforded because they are white americans! White americans are now the MINORITY PEOPLE. But we get fewer grant possibilities across the board. On the teachers, think of whenyou are in another country or even you high school forieng language class. PRONOUCIATION is beat into us and we are graded poorly for not picking this up. Shouldn't immigrants be held to the same standars as to make law enforcement or even better MEDICAL personel able to understand them? What if your baby dies at day care cuz all you have is a spanish speaking person on the line with 911 but the operator can't undestand a word they say..DO YOUR RESEARCH AMERICA!! To many people believe every lil detail they see on the news. The news is there to make money remeber that. But our public “free” libraies aren't and are unbiased with all the laws ther to be looked at factually.

What do we do about, “Ebonics”? I have been in classes where the teacher is African-American and axs, “Who in hera have any more quorstions?”. “Does anyone know what time it iyz.”….stuff like that. Arizona is pushing the envelope. I agree that illegal immigration is wrong, but I also agree, that discrimination against a person based on speech, race, color, etc….is wrong. This is an attack on hispanic educators and it is WRONG! I find it amusing how some of you just throw every latino in the mix…..Go back to your country? THIS IS MY COUNTRY!!!!! I am a 5th generation American, whose family members have fought in many wars for this, MY COUNTRY! They are dark skinned, black hair, brown-eyed, Mexican looking relatives that would be discriminated in Arizona, in a heart beat! These, my people, do not deserve to be treated as second class citizens, because you assume they are Mexican. I am light skinned, with a wonderful American accent, and will probably never experience this type of discrimination, but it makes me sick for MY relatives.

Let's see…singling out one specific group to use as your scapegoat for all of your societies I'll's. Start passing laws that target that specific group over and over.

You do all this by distorting the truth and villanizing that group. FOr example, border violence has actually decreased in the last several years, not increased like all these fools are saying.

    http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/a…

That group is then required to identify themselves in a way that allows the facist state to single them out easier (star of david sew on, or pass a law that allows people to be pulled over on sight for looking “illegal”- read:brown)

This then begins to spark acts of violence against said group. read the link below to learn about the 3rd generation phoenix Chicano SHOT TO DEATH by his racist neighbor due to this law…

You have a very peculiar idea about “illegality”. By your definition, whoever arrives first in a place forever owns that place. North America would be cleansed of all but the Ainu, as would Japan and North-East Siberia. Europe would be evacuated except for the Basques-maybe. And so on.

Invasions, displacements happen. The first Europeans cam as colonists, and were welcomed in many places. When they established governments, others who arrived were immigrants. Their descendants became natural-born citizens. The only illegals now are those who enter this sovereign nation illegally.

Think of why education bebifits are allways being cut accross the country. Now you wonder why lil Johny or Suzie seem like they have been taught in a class full of uneducated punks. Every body wants rights but no one relizes the full scale picture. Look at the Cuban in Miami when Castro opened all his jails. Where they go? Miami. Ever go down there? Can't get served unless you speak spanish. WTF? We are in the U.S. Go to any forieng country to get a Driver License. You have to learn their language to pass the test. In Florida they have 13 different languages to take your Drivers exam…..see my point.

I agree with the idea that teachers should be teaching correct English in school. Lets not make it about accents or race, its about the English language. Pronounce the word correctly or don't teach. I find it harder and harder everyday to understand people at places of business and over the phone because they are not pronouncing words correctly. This is long overdue in my opinion and should be instituted at all schools in America. English is the official language of our country. Learn it and live it.

and when you use “sheniqua” to describe a black woman- YOU ARE A RACIST.

RIght, and although miami is incredibly hispanic and in some neighborhoods spanish is the primary language (just like mandarin/cantonese in chinatowns, etc), 99% of places here speak english.

I love you idiots…Raygun (your lord and Saviour) laxes immigration regulation in the early 80's so all of his southwestern contributors in the agriculture business (and other slave labor type industries ) can abuse illegals and profit from them (which they did immensely). This then blows up in the republicans face and then, instead of having these companies abide by the law, you scapegoat the poor people coming here to work these shit jobs.

ask anyone in arizona when immigration got out of control- 80's??

Just like your little VA example: republicans privatize the hell out of the entire VA system (did tons of work for them over the years), remember Walter Reed? This also goes to shit- then they turn around and blame who?? you guessed it, the immigrants.

Anything else you wanna blame on them to make you feel a little bit better about your self?

Maybe it is their fault we de-regulated the oil industry and there is a massive gusher in the gulf. oh, wait, gulf of……wait for it….mexico!

Great, I think we should adopt Mexico's laws. If you live in the United States you speak English or back to the country your from. If we would inforce our laws we would not have this problem either, but of course our government does not 2+2=4 so what do you expect. Everyone should have to go through the process of being a legal citizen. We have hundreds of people waiting to come to the United States, but you have the one's breaking the law and they have more rights than the citizens do. Illegals are causing the States to go bankrupt; Arizona your doing a great job, maybe the rest of the country will get a back-bone and follow with your lead, but of course Obama wants to give amesty so he can be re-elected in 2012. So pray for our nation and hope the people take back this Country.

  • Msa

cut the crappy bigotry,,,The illegals will go nowhere and they will stay. FYI,they are the founding fathers to their later generations in this country, they are just laying a foundation. Your founding fathers, who came to America illegally,,exterminated many native Indians, enslaved another race and discriminated against catholics, jews,Italians, the Irish and later the Japs. Now its the Latinos. Your bigoted views will get you and your kind nowhere, eventually your race will be a minority,,and yes America belongs to all of us. Its a God given right to be here,,,no man, white or lighter can take that away !!!

No Canada has Provinces not Providences

  • M. Nam

As a teacher, I can assure you that we have to be citizens to get into college and get a degree. These teachers have done nothing wrong, other than to have an accent. There are NO native people in America. Everyone here came over at some point, and most came in ways we would consider “illegal” today. Immigration made this country what it is! Chinese and Irish immigrants built the Transcontinental Railroad, and one of the men escaping Nazi Germany helped with the Manhattan Project.
I am a mixed race teacher, though I have no accent, and it disgusts me to see such blatant racism in schools. How can we teach students history such as the Civil Rights Movement, and expect them to understand equality, then act so racist to the teachers?

  • MDPhD

Thank God, literally, for the commonsense that the people of Arizona are displaying. This is America and we are an English speaking country. If you do not like it, please kindly go home. Sounds very harsh, but “tink” about it.

  • Heavy Kentucky Accent

It's NOT accent. It's pronunciation at issue. Apparently the members of the media are unable to spell “pronunciation” or, more likely, they realize that using the term “accent” will stir up far more controversy.

  • M. Nam

I hope you don't either, as it is “grammar”.

  • My people *were* here first.

Native americans came from somewhere else, too. One of my grandparents was Native American and another was Scandinavian (Vikings), so some of my ancestors were here first twice before any other immigrants.

It's not a matter of wanting to “cleanse the country.” The problem in Arizona is that we have the highest influx of illegal immigrants leading to the highest identity theft rate in the US. Illegal drugs flow through our state as well leading to an increase in other crimes. What are we to do about it? I'm pretty sure the law we just inacted is not going to solve the problem, nor is getting rid of teachers with heavy accents. But the fact remains that we do have a problem and something has to be done about it before it gets worse. We would love to take care of everyone who needs help, but we can't.

I am not Christian nor rich nor a white supremist. I'm not even a native Arizonian. Illegals are illegal no matter what race. I expend much effort trying to follow the laws of our state, including not speeding when everyone else is. I think I have a right to expect that others do as well.

  • msa

The American citizens of Arizona need you to learn better English. For example,,you can start by exercising with simple spelling and punctuations…It's illegals not 'illeagals'…..and …..'Go home and come back legal, problem solved' . Seems your accent is really affecting your competency and masterly of the English language,,,,we don't need you here as a teacher in the great state of Arizona.

  • concerend citizen

My grandfather and his family came to Americal in 1910 and did it legally. We have laws in this country and they need to be followed. Christ also said give God what is due him and Caesar what is due him. The Bible teaches us to follow the laws of the land we are in. Because of this illegal immigration, our taxes continue to increase, our medical insurance continues to go so high that those of us who have worked all of our lives can't even afford decent medical care; and our schools are turning out students that can't speak proper English or who can't even graduate from high school. It has nothing to do with deporting those who are different, but deporting those who have no legal right to be in this country and costing those of us who have lived and worked here all our lives to see our taxes continue to increase to cover education, medical care and welfare for those who have no legal right to be here. Because of this we can't provide the essentials to the American people at an affordable cost. If foreigners want to come to this country that is great, but do it legally, learn our language and learn to respect our way of life and not put us into bankruptcy trying to support them.

  • J.

The fact that the ancestors of the majority of Americans were immigrants is beside the point. We're talking about what's happening today. Illegal acts, no matter what they are, are simply that – illegal – and should not be tolerated. My family is Hispanic and guess what – we came to the US legally! Waited our turn and went through the process of becoming American citizens – and, when conducting business we do it in English.

  • joey 777

Is there really an American English? English (British, Australian, Irish and other form and accent of “English”) comes in varying accent. As long as these Teachers teaches correct grammar then the accent should add flavor to it. What if the teacher started talking 'Ebonics'? will they say something to it too?

    G. conner!! for the love of me,,which English language are you extolling here?? You ought to be the first out of a job. Can't you write better English?? Re-learn your grammar before casting the first stone. It ought not to be about accents, but the competency of the teachers.Any research whether their students learn anything about the English grammar? From your posting here, and many others like you, am pretty certain you cannot pass a simple English test. I would really want to see the results. Am confident of my masterly of the English language, having been taught by teachers with accents notwithstanding. Illiterate bigots, who think language is just about speaking ,should be made to take tests both written and spoken and i can attest that many will fail miserably. Another attack on other Americans,,,this too will fail.

whats your beef with rednecks?at least we fight and die for our country! we also pay taxes. how many illegals do that? by the way, where are you from and are you legal? your are also a racist against rednecks and whites.

  • rebecca

Immigrants have been allowed in the country unchecked for decades……
Suddenly this issue looms large since nothing has been done over the past….yes, I agree people should be here legally…I totally agree…
But there is no need to behave as if you are superior to these people that are only trying to better their lives….the problem needs a solution, which will not be easy…it is a complex matter…but to exaggerate and cry DEPORT and STOP is ridiculous…and not feasible…the mess is made….and no, i do not know what the solution is yet, but please…it sickens me to see Americans believe as many of you seem to here…it is so ironic to me that our country is based on welcoming all… and you are all so closed minded about finding a solution…

Having an accent is not a recipe for disaster. One can communicate and teach with ANY accent. A teacher with poor grammar skills is another thing entirely…but an accent? Please.

  • msa

No such thing as 'trucking' around Mike ,as applied by Conner in his opening statement. The English language is not ambiguous. You seem to be in club of those who speak gutter English, eventually believing that you have masterly of this language. It must be your accent to blame,in which case, you must lose your job in the great state of Arizona. What do you have to say about Conner's poor punctuations? You have to be able to write the language also. You need to take a grammar test too.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. IT'S NOT THAT MANY OF THEM AREN'T NICE PEOPLE; IT'S BECAUSE THEY HAVE CREATED AN ECONOMIC SITUATION THAT IS BORNE BY THOSE CITIZENS WHO ARE HERE LEGALLY. MEXICO STRICTLY ENFORCES IT'S BORDERS AS AMERICA SHOULD. EVEN LEGAL IMMIGRANTS POSE A PROBLEM IN THAT MANY DO NOT ASSIMILATE. SOLVING THE PROBLEM IS QUITE SIMPLE; SEND THE ILLEGALS BACK TO WHEREVER THEY CAME FROM, SEAL OUR BORDERS AND FOLLOW OUR LAWS ABOUT LEGAL IMMIGRATION. SOME MEXICANS THINK THAT THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO OUR COUNTRY AND THE BENEFITS WE TAXPAYERS BEAR THE EXPENSE. CITIZENSHIP IN ANY COUNTRY REQUIRES OBLIGATIONS OF BOTH PARTIES. TOO MANY MEXICANS DO NOT PAY TAXES HERE AND TOO MANY COMMIT CRIMES AND TOO MANY RECEIVE TAX MONEY AND CREATE A DRAIN ON OUR RESOURCES. GO HOME AND COME BACK LEGALLY; PROBLEM SOLVED.

  • Lea

  • Deanna

Not to be picky, but I see a lot of mispelled words and bad grammar on the replies right here — did your teachers all have accents?
I understand obeying the law but isn't Arizona going too far now? This is getting ugly.

The federal government needs to step up and give temporary work visas to people, which will keep this whole problem in check. We'll know who is in the U.S., how long they've been here and they can pay taxes and go home when their visa is up or apply for citizenship just like everyone else. And we have to question WHY the government has not done this before (cheap labor?) and WHY we aren't punishing the bosses who hire illegal immigrants with fines and possible closure of their businesses? Is that enough to keep people in the U.S. from hiring illegals? Because businesses save so much $ when they hire under the table. There's no health insurance to be paid, wages can be cheap and lots of benefits for the person hiring the illegal worker. So, stop making the illegal worker the enemy. There's a whole system at work here with plenty of native-born Americans who profit from hiring illegal workers.

European explorers came to the current contientent starting with the Spanish–1519 in Mexico and by 1580 had established numerous outposts in what is now USA lands. Spanish-speakers are not any more foreign to these shores than English. The English came nearly 100 years later to our shores…English is the now the major language of commerce and science, but in the hemisphere Spanish is the leading language. Get over your narrow ethnic chauvinism and speak two languages, it is the future. BTW down with Castro! CHECK YOU FACTS!

    2008 U.S.A. population by race:
    White only: 62.4%!

Really, that's the only statistic anyone needs to know to show that you are just another rascist with nothing better to do, but stir the pot of hatred.

BTW, my day-care has people caring for my child in several nationalities (Russian, Japanese, Hispanic) and they ALL speak English with an accent and my kids are fluent in English and German, despite their teacher's 'incorrect' pronunciation.

Too many people believe every little detail they see in blog posts. I suggest you go to your local free library and learn the true demographic breakdown of the United States. A little intelligence goes a longer way than a lot of ignorance.

  • Chale

God Bless You TRUTH*, there's so many lame brains who fail to master basic English skills who are monolingual bigots, but what's really behind their hate is the fear of not being ready for the future USA. I am Native American and have taught hundreds of European-Americans how to write in grammatically correct sentences. ARYANZONA is filled with backward “leaders”–but, I thank them for making this the issue to bury the GOP.

  • PE

    Thank you!

If I traveled to Mexico, I guarentee everyone wouldn't be trying to speak English to make it easier for me! Any other foreign country, to stay there you need official documents. New Zealand has a grueling process to gain citizenship. Why are we different?

  • Michael MacLeod

I have no problem with immigrants coming to this country as long as they agree to do the following:
    1) Learn the language – If they want to join this society, they need to become part of it, not just stand to the side and abuse our system. Don't expect another culture to bow down and adapt to you when you are the ones seeking “a better life”.
    2) Follow the law – Enter legally, and abide by all of the laws while they are here. This is no more than we would ask of any citizen who was born here.

  • Martin

Good for you Arizona. I had a college algebra teacher from China. He was a very nice man and really wanted to be a good teacher. However, he spoke with such a heavy accent, it was very difficult to understand what he was teaching. We the students ended up suffering in the end. If you teach in this country, you should be able to speak fluent english. Period!

  • Joy

I don't think “rednecks” qualify as a race.

  • whatev

So, whites use 1.6% more of the welfare budget, yet make up approximately 75% of the population. I guess that pretty much blows a hole in your theory, huh?

  • Wiggles

Students have a right to be able to understand their teachers. However i don't believe someone should loose their job over it. We have a great deal of brilliant teachers that are not from this country originally that have heavy accents. Perhaps if complaints are made that students can not understand their teachers verbal conversation and teachings, that a class can be offered to these teachers to help them with their pronouncement of words to an understandable level for all students. It is wrong to bash someone because of an accent instead lets help them become a better teacher. If a teacher truly cares for the education of their students they won't have a problem with becoming more understandable to all of their students. Spending an hour or so in a class where you can't understand the teacher is not very beneficial for the education of our children. I believe when you come to a country..for instance you move to Italy. I fully expect myself to learn the native common language to be able to successfully communicate with the local population as i expect others that move into this country to do the same. This does not mean you give up your heritage or your native language. You simply learn to be able to communicate with those around you.

  • Paulette

Please go to Mexico illegally and voice that to them and see where that gets you. We are truly blessed as you say but being illegal is against the law. You as a Rev. should be the first one trying to uphold the law. We cannot break Bibical law at will so why should we be able to bend our Constitutional Laws at will. Do you live by the laws in the Bible that you agree with and break the ones you don’t agree with?

  • citizen

cant stand the truth? you think a misspelled word is a reason to bash someone and when did you get the authority to speak for GOD? if anyone here is fucked up its you!!!!!!!

  • Martin

I agree with you Wiggles. The students must come first. The with a heavy accent and are teaching or wish to go into teaching should take further courses to help eliminate a heavy accent so they may be better understood. There are many brilliant teachers here that have a heavy accent. Think how much better they could be and expressing their brilliant ideas and thoughts if they were understood clearly by their students.

An educator that is teaching English should speak the language as it is supposed to be spoken. Being an above average teacher with poor speaking skills taints the period of instruction if the students come away with those same poor speaking skills. The English language has many nuances, proper pronunciation of a word being one of them. I believe the school board is correct in their concern about this.

I am so tired of the “they don't pay taxes” crap! Every time they buy gasoline they pay taxes. Every time they buy cigarettes they pay a heck of a lot in taxes. Every time they drink a beer or a glass of wine they pay taxes. Every time they buy something at WalMart they pay taxes. Every time they buy soda pop at the grocery they pay taxes. And, by accepting less than minimum wages to pick your produce or pluck your chickens they are saving you money when you buy food.

I think the media is distorting the facts as usual. It really has nothing to do with the accent, we southerners have an accent, but we (most of us) use proper English. You can have a southern drawl or any other kind of accent, but you can still use proper English. If teachers are going to teach English, they should know how to pronounce all of the vowels properly. How can you teach English if you don't know how to pronounce and use the vowels or any of the other important parts of the English language properly. Why should a person living in the United States have to learn Spanish or any other language just because we decided to let illegals flop over our borders. I do think however, it is a good thing for all students from the very beginning to learn a second or third language as do most advanced countries in the world. However it is not right that the law that allows illegals to flop over the border to have children making the children legal citizens and then use the excuse that we would be separating families by deporting illegals. It the law was corrected we would have this problem. How blind can our government be. That is why they are doing it. The law allowing this to happen was originally set forth at the end of slavery to allow the slaves and their children to automatically become citizens once slavery ended. Up until that time they had no citizenship. This shows you how lax we are as a nation at correcting laws that no longer pertain to our current situation. This is just a sample of what is wrong in this country

  • truth

  • Shelbers

Why are people ranting about immigration? You are confusing what this story is about miserably. It is specifically regarding teachers (who have to be legal to be certified to teach) who are getting scrutinized for having accents.

Yes, people who are teaching English should be well versed in grammar, but I've had plenty of native English speaking teachers use really poor grammar occasionally, which SHOULD be unacceptable. However, studies do in fact show that bilinguals have linguistic advantages. Rules should be enacted in the goal of providing the highest education possible, so if the teacher is educating their students well, then they should be praising their performance instead of ostracizing them for their accent. This situation is just pure intolerance whichever way you spin it.

The education system of Arizona has certainly missed the point, which shows in the quality of their education: they are ranked dead last out of the 50 states. How are you going to argue with facts?

  • Giuliana

Wow! I think everyone that posted a comment is moving away from the original subject on this article, which is “why should teachers be penalize for having an accent”. To teach in this century is hard enough as it is..the pay suck and kids are rude as hell. So if someone is willing to be certified and has the will to educate kids within the state regulations, why take that away from them. In this country accents vary, people from new york don't speak or sound the same as people from New Orleans (nothing against either). As a community we need to speak up and teach our children about respecting and embrassing differnet people regardless of color, religion, sexual orientation, culture background, financial status and/or vocal accents , otherwise we are just teaching to hate and kids learn quick. Do not judge all latin people as illigals, and don't judge a person until you can walked in their shoes. I agree if you break the law and enter a country without permission you should be deported back. I don't agree with profiling. Everyone should be asks for a driver license when address by an officer. Thank you.

  • El Illegal

If you don't want illegals here stop giving them jobs ass hole. I don't know why the fuss when you have some working in your ranch or house. I would like to see the employer's get slapped with a felony for every illegal they hire. I bet the illegals would go home if no jobs were available. When the towers came down in New York several illegals were working there. Arizoma belonged to Mexico first before it was taken away. You want to get rid off all or most of the crime for the time being change the color of the american dollar and have all the crooks turn the hidden money in to be changed. I like to see them explain where they got all those millions when they don't work or have decent jobs. And I am talking about every one that is a crook, drug dealers, store owner, bankers, attorney's etc.

  • Jimbo701

This article is about peoples accents, not illegal immigrants. But if they are going to start auditing people because of the way they speak, then we're in real trouble. For example, I was stationed on the eastern shore of Virginia and for the life of me I couldn't understand what the locals were saying when they spoke. There are places in the deep south where you wouldn't believe what they spoke was English. So, to me, this crackdown is simply bigotry aimed at people with a Hispanic accent.

  • Sharon W.

Corporate America and farmers receive far more WELFARE than Sheniqua does! I was brought up to believe that I am no better than anyone else but I am just as good. Some of the comments on this site are unbelievable. The grammar, spelling and punctuation of some of the posters leaves a lot to be desired of our education system. Illegal immigrants are not to blame for everything wrong in our country. I agree that anyone who lives here should do so legally. I don't believe, however, that Arizona or any other state has the right to single out a teacher because of his/her accent. I live in the south. Guess Arizona is off the list of places I would be allowed to teach in!!!

  • citizen

your right. this person who broke the law needs to go to jail ! the illegals are breaking a federal law and need to be deported and let some of the thousands of legally registered immigrants be let in. two points to ponder.one, read the article about kennesaw college and this girl and you will see the colleges reply that they dont have the time or resources to verify every applicants application, which means,” we want your money,”period. point two, you dont apply for jobs in the military, you are either promoted,or assigned a job, and please dont think this was the only stray incident.

  • johnniefavorite

Oh my freakin god…I did not think there were actually really people like you. You think that school funding is being cut back because of illegals? Whoa. Now I know why they do that propaganda on Fox and shit cuzz people actually really believe it. Wow. This is scary. And hey I am all for shutting down illiegal immigration, but the way to do it is just put the people who hire them IN JAIL. Then it (or most of it) will stop. I mean, you know do that absent a radical change in hemispheric economic policy.

  • Bill

It's about time! When I learned to speak Spanish, the instructor taught us to use voice inflections where we sounded like it was our native tongue. He taught us that it was rude and disrespectable to speak Spanish with an English accent. Over the years, I have had many people tell me that my Spanish is excellent and some even have thought I was from Mexico. I am not hispanic, don't look hispanic and was born and raised in the U.S. If I can speak a foreign language with the same dialect and inflections as natives of Mexico do, why don't they teach immigrants to do the same? It isn't hard to do and it sure makes a great impression. An excellent example is Vladmir Posner, he was born and raised in Russia but to hear him speak English you would think he was from the midwest.

There is no better way to blend into a society than to SOUND like that society sounds. Anyone can do it, it isn't difficult. Besides, it shows that your respect their culture enough to learn how to pronounce words properly.

  • citizen

Send me wherever, but it doesn’t change the fact if you want to start getting rid of people who do not speak ‘English’ you can start by sending 1/2 the crackers in the south who speak, like I say, some kind of hickonics.
I didn’t say I wanted to do it. It is an extrapolation of what they are talking about with these teachers. I personally LIKE living in an area where there is a real mixture of all different kind of folks and languages and colors and cultures. Christ if some of these people came here to LA they would shoot themselves. I mean it’s awesome, you can ride for like 5 miles down Western and not even see a sign in English….hell not even see a sign with English LETTERS. Better stay in Alabama.

So you must know a lot of illegal people using the system personally. Well, if someone who comes from nothing wins some money that will make their life better then so be it, I would rather see them get the money than some trash or someone who is already well off. And the taxes of it, well, that does suck but whose fault is it that they don’t have to be legal to win? Not the illegal person’s. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. Have you ever been out of this country to a 3rd world country or spent a long length of time in one where you weren’t vacationing at some resort? Try it sometime, then your view may change a bit. And if it doesn’t then maybe you should take a look at your values.

TIme for those with recent immigrant heritage, or naturalized immigrants to flex some political muscles. Some of my best teachers, and those of my sons had heavy accents, as refugees from Germany or Europe and the devastation of the second world war. Spanish is the most widely spoken language in the world; it has an amazing literary presence, and has had a great deal to do with the actual history of the Americas. And now, because someone speaks with a Spanish accent they are not allowed to teach? This is cultural purging at its worst, and of a sort practiced only by colonial powers, not by those who are citizens of the USofA.

I think you have some serious comprehension problems. What I was saying (I will try and keep this simple and concise) is the BIG BUSINESSES have fucked up this part of the country. That it is a beautiful and amazing area and that huge corporations have raped it and the people who live there (I mean this metaphorically, in an economic and environmental sense). And that if people like you think the government has no say so in stopping these corporations or protecting you from people who would do this to you, it is to your own detriment.

As a person who grew up in a multilingual environment and speaks several languages, it is my *own personal* experience that you learn more quickly from those who sound like you. Given the large number of Hispanic-American children in Arizona schools, one would think the authorities in charge of education would want to ensure that these children have the best learning environment in which to develop there skills. Or at least attempt to conduct a study to establish metrics to measure the effect of accent on learning. This is racism pure and simple.

well, since i find southern accents difficult to understand, maybe no southern person with an accent should teach english…or maine…or for that matter texas. or those in the midwest who pronounce 'wash' 'warsh' or those massachusettes folk who pronounce 'horse' hoss'. maybe english teachers should only come from….hmmm…where….?? we are becoming a really hateful society. so sad.

and while they are there let them enforce the federal law against illegal immigration!

  • paddles57

No, but you can overstay your visa-then you are illegal. I live in Boston and we have many “illegal” Irish living and working here. Nobody bothers them because they are white and speak english.

  • paddles57

What are you replying to? Maybe you shouldn’t have been drinking that early in the day.

  • Paulette

The accent should not be so heavy that it is hard to understand for students still learning English. It is hard enough when they do speak English. My granddaughter had a Social Studies teacher from Nigeria and she and the other students really struggled because she spoke English with a very heavy accent and it was hard to understand her thereby hard to learn.

  • marblex

Well I for one, am thrilled that Arizona, a state heavily dependent upon imports and tourism, is ridding itself of 8% of its work force as well as giving the police the same authority Weimar gave its police — to inspect anyone's papers. These measures, coupled with the elimination of ethnic studies as well as the vilification, removal of accent bearing instructors, ensures that the remaining 51 states will benefit from tourists and income that will NOT be coming to Arizona.

Keep up the good work Arizona! By the end of the year even Mexico won't want you back!

  • Anonymous

My man, very good. See how much you can learn when you hang around with progresively minded people?

Let’s see if I can drop something else fo’ya here:
I’m glad you understood my point about the government not controlling big business as we, for lack of a better term, progressives feel it should. As you said the politicains are bought and paid for, indeed this is true. But you see it is the republicans and Fox newsers’ who are dead set against any type of campaign finance reform or government oversight of these huge corporations. You see what we have here is not socialism, which is (now listen close) The government taking over business; we have fascism which is big business and corporations taking over the government.
Ok that’s enough for now. See you later.

  • Loonie

I wonder if you will be cracked down upon if your heavy accent happens to be southern.

I never said he applied for a job. The point that you need to get, however, is that there are exceptions to every rule. And the college saying that they don’t have the resouces to do background checks sounds like an excuse to get them out of trouble to me. Also, as someone who teaches immigrants, I can tell you the vast majority do NOT go to college, so there are not thousands trying to get this one liar’s spot. I’m lucky if my students graduate high school instead of dropping out.

first off,im my own man,not yours.glad you are perfect because if i remember correctly, progresive thinkers, as yourself, crucified the last perfect person.now, back to the original issue.big business has and always will run the govt.,just remember “money talks, bullshit walks.”this is why we have illegal immigrants,so big business, such as monsanto and conag will have cheap and expendable labor in the agricultural business.just make immigrants legal.i don’t agree with all phases of the az law, especially the teacher part, but i do agree that if your not here legally any children born while here are not given automatic citizenship.bottom line,if it’s the law, enforce it,if it’s a bad law, change it.just one more question which you continually dance around, what is your phobia about the south?

Citizen Bubba, you are posting as a guest and RAW needs all the viewers it can get particularly those who can think and spell. As a general rule the comments on this site do not fall to the level of yours. Yours and many other redneck comments fit perfectly into the marginalized thinking category that includes putting frogs in peoples pockets, assuming that all non rednecks are gay, snickering at each others testicles, pulling the girls pigtails in class, pulling the wings off of flies, torturing their teachers and instructors, worshiping idiots like George Bush and Glenn Beck, performing unspeakable acts on barnyard animals and voting Republican. You sit at the back of the class and model your life after Wiley Coyote and Daffy Duck. You become a parody of ignorance and hold up your fundamentalist religion and its Messianic caricature when you run out of ideas. If you and your pals “could” find me I would confound the lot of you with spelling questions and reduce you further to muttering mutations of mendacity. Now put your dunce cap back on and return to the corner for a few more lifetimes. Don’t trip over your suspenders and give my regards to the rest of the Klan.

Did the Good Lord have papers when his family took him to Egypt under the cover of night? If “learning our language” is so important to you, why don’t you speak Navajo, or another “American” language?
Also, in 1910, the only requirements for coming legally to the U.S. were the ability to walk, be cholera free and not be Chinese or a polygamist. Are you so sure they would not have immigrated if the laws were different?
Also, undocumented immigrants do not qualify for Medicare or Welfare. As far as education, when you refer to “those who have no legal right to be in this country” , I assume you refer to the U.S. citizen children who happen to be born to parents without papers? The ones who are US citizens for the same reason you are, because you were born here?
Before quoting the bible to justify your frustration against your fellow man, try reading the beatitudes. Who would Jesus deport? Thank you for considering my comments.

  • Richard

What does your comment have to do with accents? I can’t imagine that you would believe that anyone with an accent is illegal… We have Southern Accents and Eastern Accents– which break down as far as areas (such as the Bronx or Jersey) So what would you do with all those people? Because it is normal where they are, but in Arizona the accent would be substantial. Would you deport them back to New York? Or consider them “illiterate on English” (Russell Pearce, 2010) because they don’t speak like you do? Supposedly our nation had evolved beyond this.. I guess there must be some “heathens” who haven’t caught up with the progress…

  • grindermonkey

EVERYONE HAS AN ACCENT. There are different accents in different regions of the USA. Some of these accents by Mainstream Americans could be described as “heavy” and difficult to understand by people from a different region. My grandmother had a heavy German accent although she was born in the USA. Her accent was the result of the influence of the people closest to her who spoke with a German accent. Any determination of whether or not an accent would be “acceptable” would be subjective and susceptible to bias. As to a test of spoken grammar for teachers, any test of that sort should also be given to the Arizona legislators. Does it follow then that if their spoken grammar is “incorrect,” they should give up their legislative seat?

Hey Varney, you need to check your facts. 8 months of work is silly. You should probably look into what teachers really do, time invested and now money out of their pockets because no budgets. Yeah maybe you're right (tongue in cheek), perhaps teachers only work a basketball season, or football season right to your point. But they not our heroes athletes are. Should these athletes make that much for the same amount of “time” as you put it that teachers put in. I always just shake my head with people like you.

  • Jelinicam

I had a college algebra teacher 20 years ago with such a heavy Indian accent that I had to drop the class because I couldn’t understand 90% of what he said. It was AWFUL. Note that this is coming from a person who had a step-father from Mexico and married to a man from Bosnia-Herzegovina…I am not someone who is afraid of on unable to discern what an English-Foreign speaker is saying nor do I discriminate against any race. I am extremely patient with and sensitive to other cultures. Determining a person’s understandability is something that should happen at the interview process and should not have gotten the position in the first place.
