US troops won’t be used to stop illegal immigration: State Dept.

WASHINGTON — US National Guard troops being sent to the Mexican border will be used to stem the flow of guns and drugs across the frontier and not to enforce US immigration laws, the State Department said Wednesday.

The clarification came after the Mexican government urged Washington not to use the additional troops to go after illegal immigrants.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday authorized the deployment of up to 1,200 additional troops to border areas but State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters, “It’s not about immigration.”

He said the move was “fully consistent with our efforts to do our part to stem, you know, violence, to interdict the flow of dangerous people and dangerous goods — drugs, guns, people.”

He said the extra troops would be used to free up civilians engaged in support functions so that law enforcement personnel can be increased along the 2,000-mile-long (3,200 kilometer) border.

Nearly 13 million Mexicans live in the United States, more than half of them illegally.

“We have explained the president’s announcement to the government of Mexico, and they fully understand the rationale behind it,” Crowley said.

Obama’s announcement came less than a week after a state visit to Washington by Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who asked for greater US backing for a bloody three-year-old war on drug cartels.

Drug violence has claimed the lives of nearly 23,000 people over the past three years.

“The clarification came after the Mexican government urged Washington not to use the additional troops to go after illegal immigrants.”

There you have it. Neither Obama nor Calderon want to stop illegal immigration. Here's a rock solid way to solve the problem:

3 strikes law against businesses who hire illegal workers. Third strike, a business loses its license and a corporation loses its corporate charter for 3 years.

That would nip the problem in the bud immediately. But the Plutocracy that occupies our government sure doesn't want that to happen.

  • http://twitter.com/akazip Mike Suttles

Goddammitalltohell. Just a show. Nothing to see here, move on.

  • Tom H.

Three strikes — this is the best idea I've seen anywhere!!

  • tj

    just like a jigg

  • parrots_abound

Hmmm so Calderon urges Obama not to use troops in the Illegal Immigration front lines, yet his Government ASSISTS them to get here, the drug lords HE can't control smuggle drugs here, his nation enjoys the BILLIONS Illegal send home from here, he won't improve HIS OWN country, rampant corruption in HIS country, strict Immigration laws in HIS country….

Yet, Obama listens to HIM and voila, we have 'troops' at desk jobs near the border.

Cmon Obama, just admit like Bush and most recent Presidents, you really don't want to do anything about the issue. Let's all stop bullshitting each other here.

  • sara toenin

Priorities, people. The harm caused by gun/drug smugglers is worse than the harm caused by a person simply “being” in the US without the right papers.

Sure, the immigration problem needs solving. Total agreement on this. But I'm not gonna freak if Obama tackles the smugglers first.

  • YIgRoo

Good they shouldnt be. If those idiots in Customs cant do their jobs, then replace them with someone who will!

13,000,000 illegals? Triple that amount and you'll be a little closer. And now, Obama's boss, the president of Mexico declares; “You will NOT stop any illegal from coming into your country. If you do, you will be bitch slapped, and you will say thank you.”

  • carol h.

The use of troops will make little difference. In case anyone has forgotten G.W.Bush sent some 6,000 troops to the border at one time and it did no good.

The problem is with the businesses that hire these people. To stop smugglers is one thing but the traffic of people wanting to work is something else. If we want to stop drugs from coming in then we need to stop taking the drugs. The concept of supply and demand is a glaring problem. If the US were not taking the drugs there would be less crime coming across the border. It does not all lay at the feet of Mexico.

Also there is the hypocrisy factor that is Mexico. They arrest anyone and jail them immediately for coming into Mexico illegally. And getting out of a jail there is not easy. Why they object to the same policy here is ridiculous.

If Mexico were not so corrupt it would not be so serious a problem. There is a ruling class in Mexico of six families. They hold the power and the corruption in their hands. They are one reason the system and the poverty are so rife with corruption. If I lived under that system I would make it my life's work to try and live elsewhere.

But in fairness to the Mexican authorities they have over the past few years tried to stop the drugs and the drug lords. The decent police and judges have been murdered, and still they have tried and do try. If we would stop taking the illegal drugs, the cartels could be diminished in power. So don't blame it all on Mexico.

Stop using illegal workers and stop using illegal drugs and we should stop selling illegal arms to anyone who wants them. This is the problem and much of it is our fault.

  • ericthefool

How about, just legalize marijuana….and bam!!!, most of the problem solved.

    1) No more weed coming across the border.
    2) Bing! New found revenue, economy booming!
    3) American Society and Culture both change for the better; Empathetic, understanding, with a more peaceful, positive, and proactive outlook on everything.

    …but that's my dream.

  • felixthecat

    That about sums it up.

  • dennycrane

    Good one. Enforce the laws.

  • guy fawkes

oddly enough, the guns are manufactured in the USA and smuggled into Mexico not the other way around…perhaps the troops are there to insure no one interferes with that process.

as for the drugs, do the math, US invaded Afghanistan, opium production soared… if anything, it looks like the US's military role is to protect the drug and arms smugglers.

  • edwards_com

You got it. The laws have been on the books for 21 years. But never really enforced.

  • Ovid

After reading this I now have buyers remorse over my vote for President Obama.

I've been cured of being a Democrat. And I hope Arizona does whatever it takes to secure their borders regardless of how this corporate sponsored McGovernment responds to them.

  • bloodhound

Stop whining. There was a time when there was no such thing as an illegal immigrant, when the US opened its shores to anyone that could come, around 1900. We should have the SAME policy now.

  • bloodhound

Here's a better way to stop illegal immigration. Force the entire mexican workforce to unionize and institute living minimum wages in that country. Then legalize marijuana to end the bloody drug war going on in that country. Mexicans won't even want to come to the US and the living standards of that country would become comparable to ours very quickly.

  • bloodhound

Except it won't work in a corrupt capitalistic society where corporation and government are indistinguishable. You think a major business would be made to suffer?? No. This law would chip away into nothing. Attack the problem at its source – Mexicans leave for a better way of life…so force strong changes in that country that – like mandatory unionization – which will raise wages and workers rights, and maybe make college education a right so their skilled workforce mature more quickly. Of course our businesses might fight that even more than your 3 strikes law because the only thing they love more than cheap illegal immigrant workers is an entire country with no real worker wage laws or protections, let alone concerns about the environment.

  • usmcr

Everybody in washington who thinks enforcing the laws they swore to uphold is OPTIONAL… gets fired.. the rest of the problems will take care of themselves.

    Its that simple.

  • Jhoffa_

    Well WHAT THE FUCK?

Why bother sending troops who are ordered to stand by and ignore US laws?

This will not play well for Mr. 42%.

  • sandi2

My research tells me that immigration in the border towns is down and that gun violence is also down. And, if you think that Mexico tells the U.S. anything you really haven't been paying much attention these past couple of decades. As the sole superpower, the U.S. gets it's jollies telling other countries what to do. If they don't obey we send in the military. Just ask Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran what happens when you don't kiss U.S. feet.

  • sandi2

And, the U.S, can require all U.S.-based businesses to pay minimum wage to all employees regardless of what country they're set up in. Then they won't be so fast to move out of the country keeping jobs in the U.S. and the standard of living in other countries will improve cutting down on immigration for everyone in the world.

  • sandi2

And we can thank NAFTA for that.

  • donofcali

“You think a major business would be made to suffer?? No.”

Well, I said they'd lose their business license or corporate charter for 3 years. If that were the law, then I'd call that (having to cease operations for 3 years) suffering.

  • Hunter

Wonderful! The US not just the whore of IsraHELL, but Mexico too.

  • tahoejer

“Nearly 13 million Mexicans live in the United States, more than half of them illegally” ???????
Hey Agence France-Presse, you need to get your facts correct. There are over 2 million illegal alien mexicans just in L.A. County. Numbers USA, and others have it at about 20 to 30 million illegal aliens here in the US now. I am so tired of the BS AND LIES that the media is giving us Americans about this illegal alien invasion.

  • Elim

His ratings just went up a little, but that's probably because people think he's actually doing something that would make a difference.

  • Elim

The Mexican military is doing that now, protecting incursions by cartel members transporting drugs, guns and money. It would be funny as hell to see them get into a big gun battle. What would Obama do then? Probably apologize to Calderon for shooting Mexican troops illegally crossing the border.

  • Elim

“The problem is with the businesses that hire these people. “

Not only that, but this change in our laws giving automatic citizenship to anyone born on US soil has got to go. If the parents are here illegally, any children born here are illegal as well. This has got to change before any other reform would do any good at all.

  • Elim

    There weed is shitty, anyway.

  • Ken LaRive

Are you crazy! Stop offshore drilling? Want to destroy America? Our infrastructure is based on oil. Replace it with something else first. Whoever signs this petition is a damned fool!

  • Ken LaRive

Make it illegal to hire them by stiff fine or imprisonment, and they will go back home, on their nickle. Invite them back through the front door.

  • Ralph

Folks, this is just more asskissing by the dope in the White House bowing to his master in Mexico and the American businesses who need the illegal workers in their plants and businesses to keep wages low.

Anyone who votes for Obama in 2012 has got to be a complete ASSHOLE, just like Obama.

FUCK YOU OBAMA for kissing Mexican ass.

  • Gene

Every illegal alien in this country could be rounded up and deported within 30 days driving the unemployment rate to near zero. Every politician that is aiding and abetting in this lawlessness and terrorism is obstructing justice and needs to either be thrown in prison or lined up in front of a firing squad and executed for high treason!

  • tjfxh

The way to put a stop to this is to legalize drugs and control them like alcohol and tobacco, and to institute a guest worker program with heavy penalties and zero tolerance for employers that hire illegals.

  • Bradwhg

Actually the guard on the border in the Yuma section did work. First the National Guard was deployed, then the double layer fence was finished and then Operation Streamline was put into effect. Apprehensions went from 140,000 in 2006 to 7400 this year. The Yuma section received over 700 soldiers. The guard presence did work in some areas. Of course they would be more effective if it was known that they were armed and could detain.

  • Bradwhg

You forgot to add just how well Calderon enforces Mexico's immigration laws against illegal foreigners from Central and South America. Hypocrisy at it's finest.

  • Bradwhg

    The Terry Anderson Solution

Congress shall declare a 90 day amnesty for ALL illegal aliens. During that period NO status adjustments will be made. Zero! For 90 days illegal aliens will have the opportunity to dispose of any accumulated assets, both real and personal. Bought a house? Sell it! Bought a car? Sell it! Got a dog, give it away! They will have three months to settle their affairs and sever all ties to this country. At the end of the amnesty period, on day 91, ANY illegal alien still here will be considered a federal, felony fugitive and will be arrested and jailed. One year the first time. FIVE years the second time and TEN years the third time. We will build a tent prison in the California / Arizona desert and expand it as needed. Once jailed, all assets will be seized and sold at auction. All proceeds will be used to incarcerate said illegal aliens. These stipulations will apply to anyone who entered the country illegally OR any Visa overstay of one day or more.

ANY ILLEGAL ALIEN CAUGHT IN THE UNITED STATES AFTER THE AMNESTY PERIOD HAS EXPIRED WILL BE BANNED FROM THE COUNTRY FOR LIFE!

On day 91, ANY employer who hires an illegal alien fugitive will be jailed. One year for the first offense, FIVE years for the second and TEN years for the third. These laws and penalties will also apply to any bank lending money to illegal aliens and anyone giving them aid and shelter, including churches.

American born children of illegal aliens will be placed in jeopardy by the actions of their parents. Since the American people had no hand in those actions, the responsibility for the care of those children will be that of their parents. If they self-deport, they have the option to take the kids with them or leave them here with an adult of their choice. If the parent is incarcerated as an illegal alien fugitive, they have the option of placing the children with an adult of their choice or making them wards of the federal government and placed in an institution until their release.

These measures are hard but they are fair and are needed to assure the survival of this once great country. They apply to anyone in the country illegally regardless of race, creed, color, height, weight, age, sex, or national origin.

  • http://www.r4ikarte.de/ m3 ds

I am waiting for the day when White House will explain to US exactly what they are doing and what the role of those troops is to be…

  • Elim

Then we'll be bailing them out to the tune of trillions after they borrow money from us and China to pay those wages. See, they don't have any real money in their banks either, just like our banks.

  • bob

Oh ya that helps! they come if there are jobs or not. You can remove the job incentive and they just rob and steal being unemployed doe sent stop them

  • Dakotahgeo

The problem with your thinking is that it DOESN’T HURT CORPORATIONS!!! It hurts ALL unemployed people who USED to work for that company!!! Dannnnnnng!!!

  • CJ

Excuse the hell out of me, but what do the “troops” in Mexico do? Um, lets see, yeah that's right, they chase down illegals, among other things. But the majority of those in the military are as crooked as the cops and government; which means they take bribes to look the other way, or steal whatever the people have of value.

Put troops on the border, but not use them to arrest illegals – because the President of the country they are trying to flee doesn't want his citizens to be sent back? Hellllllooooooo, what is wrong with this picture for the love of God?

Dumbo and Calderone both belong in a Mexican prison. The worst one they have, at that.

  • billos

The guard is gonna be used to keep pot out of the U.S. Fortunately America is independent of foreign weed. There are enough “hydro” farms and outdoor grow ops to supply everyone that wants it with decent weed. What fools they are to believe their efforts will bear fruit. The educated, Orthadox Morons are running this country.

  • felixthecatxxxx

I entirely agree! A million? A billion? Three billion? Who cares? Let 'em all in! I envision fleets of planes traveling the globe, carrying to our shores the surplus population of every Third World country. Tens of millions arriving daily!

  • Dakotahgeo

donofcali… I'm just curious… pardon me, but….what does your “final solution” do for unemployment and how does this affect corporations when Arizona doesn't HAVE any corporations or businesses LEFT in Arizona? Just curious. I hope you don't think think this ends just because we have noone to run the pool pumps clean the pools, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, et al….. you know, manicure Phoenix so it looks “pretty?” This doesn't have a darn thing to do with businesses and corporations. Should businesses and corporations be affected by this economic genocide, please remember that all the legal non-Hispanic/Latino citizens will also be out of work!! (Do you people think these things through before you post or pass laws?!)

  • Dakotahgeo

LOLOLOL….you're funny! Must be Humor Day on the ranch!

Beyond the fact that our so-called war on drugs is counterproductive
and a complete waste of money, what about the right of adult
citizens to be left alone–especially in the privacy of our
    own homes.

We don't punish those who attempt suicide and survive. So why
do we punish those who consume the wrong (politically selected)
    recreational drugs?

I don't want my government attempting to protect me from myself.
I want my government to protect me from those who want to harm
    me against my will.

Today, our nanny-state government tells us which recreational drugs
we may or may not consume. (Note that Viagra is OK, but marijuana
is not). Note that tobacco is OK, but marijuana is not.

Tomorrow, our nanny-state government will tell us which foods we
may or may not eat. For our own good and protection, of course.

  • drunkfoulmouthfilthybeast

What's the mission, Sargent? I don't have the liberty to say, all I want you to do is get in that duece and a half and get it to George's warehouse called Pure Cane White Stuff' and Olive Oil Importers Unlimited and unload those bags.and be careful, they disinated me solely responsible to see this mission completed without any incident which means, don't drop a bag, and don't tear any bags and spill any of the contents therein or we get reassigned to the frozen Chosen and that location, just like that warehouse, is “Classified.”

  • BigIron

How to deal with businesses and corporations found guilty of hiring “illegals” whether they were aware or not! First, get their attention! …

    1) Invalidate all contracts with those in positions of management of the company including perks, pensions, golden parachutes, etc. and hold any involved on criminal charges as well. If workers are found to be involved then any contracts, including union contracts, should also be invalidated including perks, pensions, etc. for those found to be involved.

    2) Force an issue of preferred stock in the company sufficient to pay off the company's fine. By doing this the workers will not be unfairly penalized for things of which they had no control and the company made insolvent by the crimes and causing the workers the loss of their jobs. The BOD and Shareholders will make sure that a recurrence is rare thing as it hurts them and not the company.

    3) Increase the fine each time a new “illegals” occurrence is found.

Also, consider such a system in place of “traditional” methods of fining companies which misbehave. Then the workers can no longer be held hostage for the misdoings of the companies for which they work and “suitable” fines may be levied against them that are not mere “slap-on-the-wrists”.

  • Ralph

It's all politics on Obama's part to make it look like he's doing something when in effect, this posting of National Guard troops on the border amounts to nothing.

Obama needs to go. We need to get someone in the White House who doesn't get on both knees before the CEOs of giant corporations or the president of Mexico.

  • BigIron

The Constitution of the united States is a “contract” between government and the people; it is accepted that it and the provisions within it are the”Rule of Law” on which our Republic is dependent in it's operations. Anything which is improper with regard to or goes against the intent of our Constitution is at once an illegal act under the Law of the Land and nothing stemming from such an act can have the protection of law.

The United States (Federal government) has be “delegated” the “power” to control immigration and our borders. The Federal government is required under “contract” to enforce those law pertaining to immigration and our borders; it has NOT done so and, in fact, the ?president? has flatly refused to do so!

This failure to enforce our laws is a “breach of contract” between the United States and the States and the people which “delegated”, to the Federal government, that “power” (see Constitution and 10A). It is thus right and just that the States and the people act to reclaim that “power” from the Federal government by rescinding their “delegation” to the Federal government of the “power” to enforce the / their borders and immigration and claiming that “power” for themselves. If their States refuse to act to reclaim that “power” then it falls to the people themselves to reclaim that power.

Arizona has almost done this but it needs to be taken a step further by formally declaring a “breach of contract” and rescinding its “delegation” of “powers” to the Federal government.

If the National Guard will not be tasked to properly enforce our immigration and border laws then it is perhaps time to call out the “Militia” to do so as would have been done in our “founders” time and for States to come to the aid of other states in common cause.

  • sandi2

Wow! You do know that Hitler did a similar thing. I used to wonder how the German citizens could go along with such a plan. I don't anymore. I've learned that it was probably the citizens' idea.

  • Pete149

How stupid. Our government and Obama have sold out to Mexico. One begins to wonder who runs our country? Mexico, the UN, the Bilderburgs, surely not us Americans. It is time to throw all these criminals out of the government and jail those who refused to protect our country from the invasion of 40-50 million illegal aliens. 1/2 of 13 million Mexicans are illegal? Where dop they get that number from? Hell around the Chicago area we have at least 2 million illegal aliens sucking our economy dry. The anti0american traitors in the government need to be treated as such. I have been saying this for many years now.

  • Pete149

I wish I could find the article. Yes the U.S. military is in Afghanistan helping the farmes grow poppies. The excuse is that if we do not then the Taliban will take control of them and get the $$$$. Just like in the 70's when the CIA and Bush Sr. were running drugs from South America, mostly cocaine, then they have laws to put users in this country in prison for using the very product they are bringin into this country themselves, same thing with Mexico, it's all a scam, it's all about money, and it is about putting mnore and more Americans in prison. We have more of our citizens in prison than any other country. It's big business, lawyers, courts, local governments, jails, prisons, rehab centers, doctors, etc…
