Unfortunately this has become standard practice for the military. Sometimes the money is deducted from pay at time of separation, and wounded Vets have been dumped homeless on the street. This is without even the money to buy a ticket home. A disgrace.

I thank God that I listened to my grandfather, who fought and was wounded in Korean War, not to join the Army. If they take care of the troops like they say they do getting shot and not having to worry about keeping your gear in order should be the last thing on a soldier's mind. Back in Vietnam 1966, I was issued a prototype M16 to put through its paces. When I was wounded and evacuated this gun was left behind with my unit in the field. I should have gotten a receipt? Three months later I'm in intensive care at a military hospital and given a statement of charges for the loss of the rifle for $5,000. Nothing else, just the rifle. It took months to get the charges waived and had to be finally discharged by the Pentagon. Crazy stuff in the military! When I was being awarded a Bronze Star with Valor and my 3rd Purple Heart by some Army General in my hospital bed, I brought these charges to his attention in front of the News reporters and TV crews. He asked me a couple of questions and gave the paperwork to an underling saying fix this. Two weeks later I get a letter saying that bill was being discharged and removed from my records. Only who you know. A reporter from the Philly Inquirer even called me later to check on how the charges resolved themselves. They had reporters back then that did their homework. Took the call in office of the hospital commander and had lunch with him in my wheelchair. A lot more to the story but that's for a different time.

So if he'd been killed, his family would have received the bill? Billing soldiers for equipment lost in action is moronic. Do Navy pilots get billed for the F/A-18 jet they got shot down in? How about the vehicles that get blown up by IEDS? This is why soldiers coined the term SNAFU!!!!!

As a former infantry officer who served in combat in Vietnam in 1968, I find the Army's “logic” in this matter repugnant. Pre -911 I never knew a reserve unit that could pack up and move across the street by themselves let alone perform their assigned MOS when they got there. I've seen prior service army ground pounders filling reserve Aircraft Mechanic billets, etc. Whatever it took for the reserve unit to fill the quota.

It just was not a program that worked. No way people can come in once a month for 2 days and stay current in any MOS, Let alone sending them to a front line combat unit. Which is exactly what was done… regardless of anyones MOS. All support was provided by civilian contractors and with the exception of some MOS most regardless of MOS were ground pounders

I wonder when soldiers'll start getting billed for losing a leg.

The Us Army (the same one that sponsors race cars, and video games to promote their hiring ) and the US Government should have to folow the procedure of the courts to prove that a soldier is responsible for missing gear and only after obtaining a court judgement should they be allowed to garnish wages or freeze assets. But, we are talking about the government that we the people lost control of 200 years ago.

Frankly the US Army should be paying restitution to the Vietnamese government and its people for the Agent Orange catastrophe, to Irag and Bosnia for contamination from depleted uranium, and to the Afghanistan people for all the indescriminate deaths of civilians in that country.

However the likelyhood that any bill presented to the Army or the US government would ever be paid is nill.

Yeah, that is fucked up! I got 20 years in and I ETS this September. Being I am a Army Reservists I serve part time like the National Guard. I am also or was self employed for 8 years. I was in the National Guard 4 of those years I was self employed, (working the motorcycle rally circuit), Last 2 years with the Reserves and I went on 4 TDY's, (temporary duty), and everytime I got back I had to wait up to 6 months just to get my pay, which in turned pretty much ended my business, because I own NO credit cards. A memorandum came down sometime a little over 1 1/2 ago that your unit, (all National Guard and Reserves) and give you an Article 15 for getting injured. Yep thats right, Article 15 for getting injured in a combat theater. I know that over the years I have seen soldiers get wounded and most of the time, they are hauled off with just themselves, an IV, some have been so badly injured, they had to be doped up, which put them knocked out. Generally all equipment is left with the units other soldiers when the soldier was with on the battlefield at the time of injury to the time of evacuation.

I told my commander I am finished, don't even talk to me about re-uping, forget about retirement, I would probably get my half of retirement fucked out of in some way as the exwife would get the other half. I told them to put me in IRR I don't give a shit. They ended my successful business I had because the Army claims no money and the Air Force and Navy is having to fund Army Payroll. What is really fucked up is the Army is spending money like crazy to build barracks for foriegn troops. Yep not only are they reconditioning old barracks, but the are also building barracks on every Army post across the U.S. to house battalion size level of foriegn troops from several countries, but yet, the Army can't even pay their soldiers. In fact even though they served 1 weekend a month, I don't know where you got your sroces from, but many including you think they were a joke and also incorrect. I been on all sides of the fence, Active Duty, Reserves, and National Guard. It was proven that the Reserves and Gaurd performed VERY WELL during theaters of combat and in ACTUAL COMBAT and actually did better than their Active Duty Components and it threw the Active Duty into shock. It also made the DOD rethink on the amount of training and cost of Reserves and Guard do as apposed to all the money spent on training Active Dity soldiers for the same schooling, training , etc. That is why DOD reduced some of the schools for training. I remember when I first went to SFAS it was 3 weeks, then they reduced it to 2 weeks. Now they are thinking on going back to 3 weeks for SFAS. But not just those schools even leadership schools are being reduced in time for training. The Active Duty looked at the Reserves and Gaurd doing leadership schools in 2 weeks as opposed to 1 month from Active Duty and the same outcome but less money spent.

Again, the Army Reserves adn NAtional Guard has proven themselves on the battlefield and haev performed better than their Active Duty Components. You can read up on it on the militarytimes.com website and forums.
