JERUSALEM (AFP) – The Israeli army released footage on Monday of the resistance put up by pro-Palestinian activists as commandos stormed an aid ship headed to Gaza in an operation that has sparked a diplomatic furor.

Video images showed troops rappelling down to the deck of one of the vessels in the aid flotilla and coming under repeated attack by a group of people waving poles and chairs.

As a black-clad figure climbs down a rope from a chopper, someone on deck lobs a projectile at him and a group of baton-wielding passengers converge on him as he drops to the ground in chaotic scenes in which it appears that the passengers had the upper hand.

In the black-and-white footage, which appears to have been shot from a nearby vessel, at least six passengers can be seen on the deck of the vessel, repeatedly raising their sticks and forcefully hitting something or someone out of shot on the ground.

As the scenes of violence unfold, soldiers watching the operation from the nearby ship can be heard speaking in Hebrew. “They’re really beating them badly,” one says.

Among the crowd of at least 20 or so passengers milling around on the deck, at least two can be seen pushing one of the Israeli commandos over the railing onto a lower deck, pulling some kind of kit off his back as he falls.

“Wow, they’ve thrown a fighter over the edge,” another voice says. “They’ve just shoved him over.”

Another demonstrator can be seen waving a white chair over his head in the melee, which also shows one commando pointing what appears to be a paint-ball gun at the passengers.

Israel has come under furious attack from countries across the globe in the wake of the attack which left at least nine protesters dead, most of them reportedly Turkish.

Much of the criticism has focused on Israel’s use of live ammunition against the pro-Palestinian activists who were in international waters as they sought to run the blockade Israel has imposed on Gaza since the Islamist Hamas movement seized control of the territory in 2007.

They will get away with this clear crime, you can bet on it.

If you attack a ship on the high seas, you are a pirate and terrorist, and deserve whatever defensive measures are directed towards you. Israel never had and now never will have the moral high ground.

    Yep.
This was a clear act of terrorism, Israel is just pure scum.

    Hello?

See if I have this right. Armed Israeli soldiers illegally board a boat in international waters. The activists on the boat hit them with plastic chairs and poles. The soldiers respond by shooting and killing 10 to 20 of the activists, and wounding many more, and show as justification a picture of a small knife.

Israel appears to no longer think it needs to act in a reasonable way. Israel is not a strong country, so one has to suspect that the US is giving it permission to act in this sociopathic manner. Or maybe Israel believes that Obama is not strong enough to stand up to them.

Also note the difference a decade makes. Israeli soldiers used to be disciplined professionals who efficiently got the job done. Today they appear to be bumbling fools, which in the long run makes Israel less secure because this weakness is exposed.

I'm normally pretty sympathetic to the state of Israel, but this incident could very well prove to be an important moment where the country has to change it's course. Ships have been raided in international waters before by the IDF, but 19 deaths will not easily be brushed aside by the world community.

The caption said the activists were trying to “kidnap and Israeli soldier”. That is just ridiculous.

What they did was pick some soldiers to be sacrificed to those on board, so they would be justified boarding the ship and shooting it up. They had to save their troops.

  • ericthefool

Hi, Broccolirob. You forget two important points.

    1) This was in international waters. Israel has no right to be boarding that ship and have every bit of violence coming to them.

    2) We only hear Israel's side of the story, which they already have prearranged and preplanned. Palestinians have been slaughtered, fenced off, and beat back for years and years. When is their story told?

  • TiredOfThePhonies

Let's see how you react when a bunch of nutjobs try to invade your country.

please tell me how this is illegal? you obviously have ZERO background in international law

  • Ramzi

that just makes ZERO sense. If you attack “a” ship on the high seas. Obviously it depends what the ship is doing. Or are you saying that if I were to attack a pirate ship or a ship hosting an al-Qaeda convention that it would be an act of terrorism?

  • Ramzi

If I were to list the “clear” acts of terrorism we'd just see a whole lot of Arab Muslims with a few Irish Catholics from the 90's thrown in for good measure. But by all means, please continue living in your fantasy world.

    Dear President Obama,
Please put an IMMEDIATE stop to all new offshore oil drilling NOW. As with (dirty) coal, this country has had more than enough human and environmental disasters from dirty oil. We need to concentrate our efforts on clean, sustainable energy, not oil and coal that pollute our air and water, destroy our environment and create health hazards for far too many of our people and wildlife. It can be done and you have the power to make it possible. Please do it.

  • http://clintjcl.wordpress.com/ ClintJCL

But it's not their country. They stole it from the Palestinians, dumbass. Read a history book.

  • George

Every country that has ever had a naval blockade does this and worse. Many will just sink ships instead of trying to use less than lethal force to capture it. the primary weapon they were using was a riot gun. They carried side arms and when one of their weapons got used against them they were forced to return fire with live rounds. Look at the history of naval blockades. You should at least give Israel credit for not trying to go in heavy handed like most countries would have done and sunk the ship.

  • George

Try metal poles, knives, sling shots, clubs chairs. One of the critical wounded Israelis was stabbed the other shot. Hmmm. What does that say? The primary weapon the Israelis attempted using was the riot gun with baton rounds and tear gas. While yes there so called white flag was up they were still attacking so of course the soldiers had to act accordingly. My point is there is both sides are lying and covering up on this. Ramzl is correct

  • Abe

Soldiers had no right to board the ship in the first place.

  • Jack56

Ramzi is correct? Ramzi makes no sense, and it is a waste of time to respond to someone who just throws out pejorative words that have no context.

You make some points however. I agree that probably both sides are lying, which almost always happens in conflicts. My question to you is, “was the boarding legal?” If not, and it appears not, does one have the right to defend oneself against illegal actions? When the occupied force (in this case apparently civilians) fights for their liberty, the argument is often given by the occupying force (professional soldiers) “I was only defending myself.” If Israel hadn’t been there in the first place they wouldn’t have put their soldiers in harms way.

when asked to be escorted into harbour the convoy refused, so they were told they would be boarded as a defensive exercise, to search for possible smuggled arms. When the boarding personnel were attacked (watch the footage) after shooting paintballs, they HAD to defend themselves when shot at from an 'activist' brandeshing a handgun. In personal defence you use the weapon as a last resort, this turned into combat when the landing personel were attacked by activists on board.

  • HBoung956

You must be what 14-15 for that sophomoric comment…. stop listening to the nightly news and actually pick up a book so you won't look so foolish in the future….lol oh my

  • http://clintjcl.wordpress.com/ ClintJCL

Huh? I'm 36. Did you learn that debate tactic in debate club? “Accuse person of being a young age and then declare victory.” Wow. Learn to debate the facts. The UN doesn't have the actual right to say “oh by the way, this isn't your country right”. Neither to the European Jews, who emigrated to a region and then ran an illegal war to take territory that was not there's. You fail at the most basic history here.

  • http://clintjcl.wordpress.com/ ClintJCL

So people bringing humanitarian aid from 5 different countries are murderers now? Love your logic.

Not murderer's. Just murder enablers and smugglers. So Israel is just supposed to trust these anti-semites? “They say they are humanitarians, so there is no need to check out what they are bringing in.”

Yeah… your logic is flawless ClitJCL

  • Ramzi

Hammas did in fact seize control before they were democratically elected… so… it's not wrong to say they seized control.

  • Ramzi

There is not one spelling for Hamas. I speak Arabic so I transliterate as everyone does when using native Arabic words. There are American GIs who have killed more people than John Wayne Gacy, Jr as well. My point was never the number of people. The PLO invented the plane hijacking, and Hammas specifically targets women, children, and innocent civilians who are obviously not militants. If you can't make that distinction then you're as dumb as you look.

  • History Lesson

My friend, I think you need to read a history book. Read how Hitler cut a deal with the arab leader “The Muffti” to “cleanse” Palestine of Jewish citizens…yes that's right, Jewish citizens who also lived there. Jews and “palestinians” a.k.a Jordanians were both living there together until the British came in and destroyed it like every other part of the world. That was before Israel was even a state and the arabs had a problem. Truth, no matter what concessions Israel makes or demands they meet, there will never be peace because that is not the objective of Hamas nor any other major Palestinian organization. Israel sent in it's own army to remove jewish settlers and give back land in exchange for peace…what'd they get? bombings, rockets, kidnappings. Israel caves to U.S. pressure and accepts the results of a “democratic election in Gaza”…who'd the people elect? Hamas. It's become a joke. I could go on all day. The Palestinians have an obsession with being vitcims and crying massacre if someone looks at them wrong instead of educating their children with love, not hate and Hamas big bird tv shows that teach them about suicide bombing and martydom. Israel gives more humanitarian aid to Gaza on a daily basis than most of the civilized world gave to haiti in response to the earthquake. From the looks of your blog you need a history book, instead of drooling over Manga comic books.

  • Ramzi

Hey Clint, instead of taking the easy way out, why not respond to the history lesson?

  • Ramzi

Jack only responds to questions that are either easy or too convoluted to answer. If the people on the boat had a right to “defend themselves” by illegally attacking Israeli soldiers, then certainly, even if you think the boarding of the ship was illegal, Israel has a right to “defend themselves” by searching it for weapons that commonly smuggled by these “international aid” groups.

  • Ramzi

    based on what?

  • Jack56

Ramzi, you state that it is illegal to attack Israeli soldiers who are carrying out illegal actions. Why do you believe that Israeli soldiers are above the law?

Do you believe that no one should be able to defend himself if illegally attacked?

The Israeli government is doing its best to spin the story to show that the attack by the Israeli soldiers was justified. I listened to an interview earlier today with Israeli Military spokeswoman Lt Col Avital Leibovich, who said, and I paraphrase fairly closely, (the activists) chose a new tactic of well-planned violence. Despite claims by organizers on the boat that the activists were there for humanitarian aid, this turned out to be false. We found our soldiers being lynched by various activists using knives and stolen pistols from our soldiers, opening live fire at our soldiers and hurting them.

The interviewer commented, up to 19 people have been killed by the Israeli soldiers, and several Israeli soldiers have been injured, and in response Lt Col Leibovich replied,

The number one concern for the state of Israel is not PR, it is safety and security for its civilians and this is why we went (on board), we had no idea who was on board, we don’t know who these terrorists are, what kind of munitions they’re carrying with them, and unfortunately these details came true early this morning when we saw that they were armed and they had intentions of violence.

Lt Col Leibovich states that the pistols used to open fire on Israeli soldiers were those that were taken from the Israeli soldiers. Next she states that she didn’t know beforehand what kind of munitions the activists had with them (which was one of the stated reasons Israelis went on board), and then she states that these details came true when we saw that they were armed.

Lt Col Leibovich has just outlined how the Israeli army carried out a self-fulfilling prophecy. They suspected that the activists had firearms, so they went on board with their own firearms and unintentionally supplied them to the activists, and then she said that she was right in believing that they had firearms.

She is the Israeli army spokesperson and cannot expect anyone to believe a story that is so illogical.

  • Vrark

Both sides are ultimately guilty. I mean, Isreal really had no right to board a civilian ship in international waters – that's clearly illegal. However, the people of Gaza have no right to complain – lobbing rocket's at your neighbor's civilians is also clearly illegal.

My guess is give it a couple generations to boil over and it'll settle down. After all, I believe the French and the English once felt this way about each other and now look at them.

  • Vrark

Jack56, I dissgree with several of your points, but agree with others.

Isreal had no right to board the ship in international waters, ergo the activists had the right to try and remove the soldiers. It would have been a differant story had the ship made it to Gazan waters.

Isreal IS a strong country, despite what you may say. They have a very high tech military, unmatched by any of its regional neighbors. They have cultivated a very civilised and advanced country in the midst of a region wrought with instability, corruption and vice. Not to mention that they have done all this in the face of overwhelming hostility from their neighbors. Also, you cannot tell me that the Isrealis aren't brave… large portions of their population live under the looming threat of a rocket bombardment every minute of every day. That takes guts, whatever you might say.

  • Vrark

I believe they told their side of the story through the once daily rocket barrages on innocent Isreali civilians. An allusion: You poke a bear with a stick for long enough, and it’s going to eat you.

Niether side has the moral high ground anymore. This whole conflict has become a string of dirty tricks pulled by both sides in and effort to appeal to the international community into applying each side’s sense of justice.

Quite frankly, I think it’s time the international community washed our hands of this mess and let them figure it out. Maybe then they’ll grow up and see that this constant fighting is detrimental to both sides and move on.

  • Jack56

I accept that the use of the word “strong” was a poor choice. On their own, they would not be a strong country, but they have the United States to support them. This is true of much of the world today. There is no shame in this; it is just the way it is.

However, I was also referring to the fact that Israel used to have a strong moral compass that they seem to have lost. I might say the same thing about the United States, especially for the last 8 years under Bush. The problem with power, be it your own, or be it because you are backed by someone else, is that if unchecked, it can fog your mind. This seems to be the case with Israel these days.

  • jess

Just keep hating Jews…and see what hapens to you ignorant racists!

  • Vrark

Alright, I can agree to that.

  • guest

Actually Hamas was “elected”….but then “seized” control of the rest of the strip via force by taking over Fatah terrirtory in 2007 and killing Fatah members. Fatah is a rival group which is slightly more moderate…if you believe such a fairy tale is possible.
