Like the old song goes, one of these things is not like the other...

However, remind a police officer in Corpus Christi, Texas of those famed Cookie Monster lyrics and they're likely to give you an annoyed look.

That's because a recently discovered cache of plants, initially pegged by officials speaking to local news as "one of the largest marijuana plant seizures in the police department's history," turned out to be a relatively common prairie flower of little significance.

Texas officers ultimately spent hours laboring to tag and remove up to 400 plants from a city park, discovering only after a battery of tests that they had been sweating over mere Horse Mint, a member of the mint family -- effectively turning their ambitious drug bust into mere yard work.

The plants, which bear very few aesthetic similarities to cannabis, were reported by an unnamed youth who came across them while riding a bike in the park around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Upon visual inspection, police apparently agreed that the inoffensive plants had to go.

Ultimately, officers were reduced to conducting chemical tests to learn their "weed" was really just that: an actual weed.

"The resident of corpus and nueces county should seriously be concerned with how their tax dollars are spent," he continued. "[This] is the same police department that serves, protects and investigates you.... does it really take that long to find out you don't have marijuana."

"Officers did not explain how their big 'drug haul' will be disposed of, now that they’ve spent untold hours and plenty of taxpayer money clearing weeds of the the city park," writer Steve Elliott summarized for News Junkie Post.

The tale is, at very least, a compelling argument for accurate, non-fear-based drug education in public schools, which advocacy groups say is sorely lacking.

What's really frightening is that police can get a search warrant to raid your home simply by telling the judge they “smell marijuana”. If they don't know what it looks like then how do they know what it smells like? Are they trained drug-sniffing dogs? No. 800,000 people are arrested each year on cannabis-related charges – most for possession.

I have another story for you, this takes place in another county about 4 years ago, but still in Texas
Comal county sherrifs raided my friend's house one time, on suspicion of distributing marijuana (some other jackass got caught and tried to narc on them to get a lesser sentince),
Well they broke down his door and pointed guns in his younger sisters face, and basically were being too aggressive all around. Anyway they search, WITH drug sniffing dogs, and couldn't find his weed stash that was hidden in a series of VHS cases.
Friend sued and got restraining orders on every cop involved, they can't even drive by their house without a legit reason. When all was said and done, my friend had new widescreen TV, new couch, new front door to replace the one that they kicked in, and a phat sack of dro and we sat around smoking the weed that they couldn't find, even with a 'drug sniffing dog' lol
so yeah maybe less funding for police and more for education? I doubt it would help I mean you have to pay attention to learn something so…

While I would be the first person to agree that Corpus is one of the most backward towns in TX (my in-laws live there, but, luckily, we live in Austin) , and I think this story is hilarious, to be honest, the picture they are showing as “horsemint” is not the variety most common to Texas, which is the one they were probably confused by. The flowers do even have a pungent, minty odor not too far off from dope, as well.

If you take the time to do a quick Google image search, you will see that the plant you have pictured is, in fact, not Horse Mint. Horse mint, when the flowers have not yet bloomed, does in fact, resemble marijuana plants to a certain extent. Although most would be able to figure out that it is not marijuana fairly quickly, it would be good for fair, unbalanced journalism to include an actual picture so as not to look like you are going out of your way just to make cops look stupid.
