We set our sites on the likes of Syria, Iran, certain Palestinian groups, and others we deemed “enemies.” Iranian elections were criticized while we handpicked the candidates for Iraq; we vilified Syria for its dictatorship while we sweated out who would replace our one man rule in Egypt; calls for democracy avoided our kings on thrones. In this atmosphere, Bush 2 pushed for elections in Gaza with the belief that our man Abbas would capture the election and the never ending peace talks could begin its meaningless dance.

When Hamas upset the apple cart and won, Bush 2, the neocons and Israel were outraged. All the efforts put into the election to assure Abbas victory came to naught. Having democracy “fail,” the policy wonks turned to other means. One of which was to encourage civil war between Hamas and Fatah. An attempt by Abbas to overthrow the Hamas government ended with a Hamas victory. It was then that Bush 2 and Israel turned to siege warfare on Gaza. Humanitarian funds were cut–the US pressured our Western allies to comply. Severe restrictions on what could go into Gaza were enforced by Israel and our man in Cairo. Israel resorted to military actions when Gazans tried to break the barrier. Resistance to this brought about the horrendous assault of 2008 and eventually Goldstone Report.

The suffering of Gaza was our making as well as Israel’s. Netanyahu’s worry that future ships will bring missiles into Gaza does have a solution–make a real, just and comprehensive peace with the Palestinians. Each new clash brings Israelis apologists out to defend what most of the world now views as indefensible. The US support for Israel and what it does will continue, the human tragedy of Gaza will continue, and the never ending war on terror will continue.
