I think Helen Thomas' comment relects the resentment that many people feel, even if they are too fearful to articulate it. There is a price to be paid for bullying one's way into statehood, and then demanding that one's, basically mythical view of history, be accepted as the actual history.

Ms. Thomas has a Lebanese background. I suspect her heart must have been broken many times over the events that have occurred in Lebanon over the past 60 years. It is unfortunate, especially given her background as a news reporter, that she made a public comment without thinking about the consequences of her words. But, she spoke from her heart, and I think expressed what many people feel. The supprters of Israel, while they might feel gratified that they ended her professional career, might think about what she said and that her comments might reflect a broader viewpoint.

It's a shame, a true shame that this woman had to retire/fired from her job. She was so good at asking those questions that other reporters where afraid of asking, and she would literally get into a war of words with the press secretary. The reason this was so career ending even for her was that she said something that was true and they in the media and out had to do everything in their power to not allow that line of reasoning to linger to long in the light of day. This is something that is said at night among politicians and people in power, but they know that the US (media and govt.) is infiltrated with people that are pro israel and any bashing whatsoever or even commenting about israel is a career killer.

They know that much of the US problems with the middleeast could be fixed overnight if they would at bare minimum show even handedness in working with each side. But in our world one side is right (Israel) and the other side is wrong (Muslim countries and anybody else who disagrees). Leaders around the world who are in control of large countries will tell you that you don't let a small country that is allied to you dictate your policy. We as a country is being controlled from another small country and that country knows it.

When people, Huckabee for one, has called for the Palestinians to go elsewhere, not has been said. We need more real Journalists who are not afraid to ask for tryth and accountability.

This is bizarre. Thomas spoke only truth to the heart of the matter. The source of the problems in Palestine are a historical fact: the 20th century migration of European Jews into that land. (One can argue that the real source is intolerance, but that intolerance cuts both ways.)

Israel is a nation-state. It is not a person, a religion, or ethnicity. It is a political actor which makes political choices. To criticize Israel is no more a criticism of the religion therein than a criticism of China is a criticism of Buddhism. This is a deceitful argument designed to prevent any honest discussion of Israel's political policies.
