Click for New York Times story: US-backed ‘bribes’ in Afghanistan may be funding Taliban

On June 7, the day Afghanistan became America’s longest-ever war, the New York Times reported on an ongoing investigation poised to prove that private security companies “are using American money to bribe the Taliban” to fuel combat and thus enhance demand for their services. The news follows a “series of events last month that suggested all-out collusion with the insurgents,” the Times said.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), a leading opponent of the war, wondered, “Is the U.S. paying for attacks on U.S. troops?”

“Our troops are dying in Afghanistan, and now it turns out we may be funding their killers,” Kucinich said in a statement e-mailed to Raw Story, renewing his longstanding call for a pullout. “Our continued presence in Afghanistan is detrimental to our security.”

“The American people are paying to prop up a corrupt government that may be using our money to pay private companies to drum up business by paying the insurgents to attack our troops,” he said.

Kucinich’s motion in March to implement a swift withdrawal of US troops from the region failed by a margin of 365-65 in the House.

“In the coming weeks, Congress is expected to be asked to give another $33 billion for war efforts… I will be bringing this report to the personal attention of individual Members of Congress prior to the vote on any additional war funding,” the Ohio congressman said.

The Times interviewed a NATO official in Kabul who “believed millions of dollars were making their way to the Taliban.”

A White House spokesperson did not return a request for comment.

Robert Greenwald, an ardent war critic and director of the 2009 documentary “Rethink Afghanistan,” viewed the Times story as vindication for his message.

“Supporting a corrupt elite in a civil war does nothing to make us safer, costs the United States billions of dollars, and it’s not working,” Greenwald told Raw Story.

It “confirms what we have heard numerous times from our friends, co workers and producers in Afghanistan. The United States is effectively funding both sides of the war all too often,” he said.

The administration and large bipartisan majorities in Congress continue to support and fund 8-year-long military operations in Afghanistan, warning that a pullout could lead to a Taliban takeover and greater threats to American interests.

Richard Holbrooke, US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, told reporters Monday that the US, Japan, Britain and other countries have “committed” roughly “200 million dollars” to fund peace efforts in Afghanistan, Agence-France Presse reports. The Afghanistan Peace and Reconciliation Program aims to reintegrate Taliban fighters who have renounced violence into Afghan society.

US defense contractors pay insurgents millions, report says
    By John Byrne

    http://rawstory.com/2009/2009/11/defense-contra…
    “…
“In this grotesque carnival, the US military's contractors are forced to pay suspected insurgents to protect American supply routes,” Roston writes. “It is an accepted fact of the military logistics operation in Afghanistan that the US government funds the very forces American troops are fighting. And it is a deadly irony, because these funds add up to a huge amount of money for the Taliban.
    …”

this isn't new … it's just that no one is listening

  • http://therevolusean.blogspot.com/ Rastapopolis

If you were a representative of congress, who believes that 9/11 was orchestrated by Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, surely something like this would make you ponder how we define “Turn the other cheek.” If you were such a representative, you would observe that America was attacked by a foreign entity, and the reaction of America to that attack has essentially been to do EXACTLY what Al Qaeda and bin Laden wanted. Now America's generosity has reached its acme, given that Al Qaeda are now being paid for their lethal services to America. No wonder there are so many bible bashers in the States, it really is the land where the letter of the bible is pursued like a fly to a pile of dung.

This is the purpose of war. And the best way to make sure it continues is to arm both sides.

did Kucinich take the 30 pieces or not? Media reported he did. Matter of fact this website is one of them. All you got is name calling. NO FACTS.

Wrong! He opposed the HC bill because it had mandates. I agreed 100% it was wrong. He later found out what I did, which made me actually see it as 'better than nothing' or what had better be a first step. The mandates are not enforcable. If you don't buy HC after 2014 and get fined, and don't pay the fine, the IRS or Government cannot charge interest, or forcibly collect it, or put it on your credit record or anything. You'll just have a 'fine' sitting out there which they can't enforce. IT IS WRITTEN IN THE BILL. It's also effective in that it will cause employers to change full time benefitted workers to contractors, so they won't have to conform with requirements to offer insurance.

The net result will be public outcry. The reason Single Payer wasn't in it was not enough support. Once enough who were against Single Payer are suddenly without affordable coverage, they'll demand it. It's a shame that's how we are going to have to get there in a largely corporate-controlled America. So many so self-centered that nothing is a problem, even if it's a problem for tens of millions, until it affects them or someone very close to them. This is nothing new in the land of the self-centered disguised as 'free' (what a great excuse, freedom from responsibility, they try to paint that on the 'welfare folks' but it's the 'don't touch mine' people who are fine if a huge chunk of America suffers so they can keep a little more of what they have).

  • Satan

The war is idiotic and the fact that we have 100,000 troops and 100,000 contractors attempting to get a few hundred members of Al Qaeda is quite frankly, embarrassing.

Anyone who claims that this war is needed, the longest war in U.S. history against a rag tag band of backward morons is nothing short of a complete fucking idiot, like every last American soldier fighting these phony wars (fucking dolts). Phony people, phony valor, phony everything – It's all to maintain the wartime economy and antagonize Russia and China (our enemies). I wonder where the roots of Russia's heroin epedemic are? Lol.

A local Russian radio station in my area broadcasts employment commercials for the CIA occasionally. They start out the same way every time, “Do you want to serve your new country? Do you speak Russian, Chinese or Farsi?…”

  • AtlanticCapers

The Taliban is not a centralized government with a structured military-command hierarchy. It's a bunch of conservative assholes from Pakistan and Afghanistan who don't want intelligent people telling them what to do.

The Taliban is basically the Teabaggers of the Muslim world.

I say we send Rand Paul or Sarah Palin over there to negotiate an alliance. Rand has clearly demonstrated sympathy for their social plight (i.e. civil rights) and Sarah can handle the finances (i.e. Unocal).

Teabaggers, stand with your Taliban brethren. This is your moment to shine. Go.

    Go to Afghanistan.

On that Airplane ride, Obama told Kucinich that, there is no way we are going to get the “Public Option”, and to vote for the current Health Reform Bill, because its all were gonna get for now.
Dennis realized that Obama was right, and agreed to co-operate.
It was a Sad Day, but we got to keep the Public Option Dream Alive!!!

Every war is a desaster when the human values and arguments fail then the war is consideredto be an option but in the case of Irak and Afghanistan was full of lies which give no good results. As the Muslims in seventieth century made an agreement with Mekkan,s by Prophet Mohammad the Muslims were very sad and desparade then came reveation from God and said is biggest victory. In the coming yeas it proved through peace the whole Arabs embraced Islam.
I have yesterday also written that Kucinich is right and today he is also right to kill and to be killed by tax payers money but it will not stop as Obama has no powers to do so till the America is destroyed by American,s and in religious terms every Muslim in the world prays to God to destroy America and Allah don,t cruelty, unjustice, innocent to kill and arrogance. All the properties are with American,s and is for me clear if all the law makers take money from lobbies they will have to work for them.

How can a war be won when there is not a national government to surrender? Afghanistan remains tribal, but not in the usual manner one thinks of as tribal. The tribe may or may not listen to the tribal leader. Most tribal conflict arises through disagreements between relatives, (first cousins.) There is no tribal council that represents all tribes. Each tribe has control over a particular area. The tribes do not fight for concepts such as freedom, democracy, and rights. The tribes do not listen to Kabul, because Kabul is not relevant to them. The central government in Kabul is corrupt; therefore, it is impossible for the U.S. to win trust through the central government. Of course, there is the nagging question: If victory is possible in Afghanistan what will have been won? A population with a life expectancy of 45 years, a very low literacy rate, a harsh environment that provides only a subsistance existence, and people whose hearts and minds cannot be won, because most of them do not want anyone, including their own people, to win their heart and mind. A good portion of Afghanistan exists in the stone age. A criminal consciousness exists among a large portion of the population. They do not like the U.S., because they do not like anyone.

  • BOGI666

The USG using American taxpayers monies to fund both sides in a war is not new, it was also the case in Vietnam. An example by brother told me while he was stationed at Pleiku in the central highlands which was under continuous threat by the Vietnamese. The Americans could tell in advance when they were going to be attacked. Along with American aircraft there was also a wing of the so called “south” Vietnamese stationed there. The Vietnamese planes would leave the base just prior to the base being attacked, meaning that our Vietnamese”allies” knew in advance when the attack was coming. USG military authorities were not informed. I use the “south” term although there was never a “south” Vietnam, itwas a concoction of the Pentagon/USG and only existed in their minds, not is reality. Just as in WW1, the same corporations funding both sides in a war is a windfall for profits to he CORPORATE WELFARE KINGS. It's also happening with Mexico now with the U.S. arm manufacturers. Their weapons are smuggled into Mexico from the USA, and the USG buys the weapons for the Mexican government to protect themselves from those that uses the weapons smuggled into Mexico. It's in the Constitution, “the right to bare arms” so it must be legal for the WELFARE KINGS to profit by supporting opposing forces in a conflict. Just ask the SCOTUS.

  • Savantster

“warning that a pullout could lead to a Taliban takeover and greater threats to American interests.”

The only interests at threat are the lack of heroin that would come to be, and the pipeline the Taliban doesn't want there. There are no other threats to the United States from the Taliban, period.

  • Savantster

How is this materially different than us paying the Taliban to NOT attack transports? We give our enemies cash to let us move our equipment… they agree because it allows them to buy more weapons and attack us at OTHER locations.

it will never cease to amaze me just how ignorant the masses are for not seeing the blatant corruption of our own corporate overlords. They are the ones profiting from this, while American Citizens die and are blow to bits for the corporate coffers.

He may be a sell out, but he's doing his job and offering bills and motions to protect the average person. he's also one of the least wealthy people in all of Congress.. how you equate “working for the people” and “not rich” as 'sell out', I'll not know.

  • Savantster

The Taliban has no connection to al Qaeda.

And if you believe a bunch of cave dwelling arabs (most of whom came from an ally State, Saudi Arabia, and a few who were alive after they allegedly flew planes into those buildings) found a way to steal 4 giant jet liners and bullseye them into 3 buildings, two of which were only twice the width of the 400 mph missiles, then I think we've found part of the core problem.

  • Savantster

No, it's not “Dem versus Rep”, but it IS left versus right. Right-wingers, of all breeds, want the ability to exploit others for their own gain. Period. You want to run companies where you can enslave employees and blame them for not fighting back, never mind the reality of few jobs than people looking for work, _always_, even in “good times”… never mind that to pay bills you _must_ have a job, which means you're subjected to the whims of the employer (under your slave owner utopia).. never mind that you don't care for anyone but yourself.. and never mind that your solutions are _never_ ones that will work for the greater public.

Every single person in your “shadow elite” is a self-serving right-winger, no matter what party they choose to hang out with. Lots of right-winger Dems in office _today_, and it will only get worse as time moves on.

Contrast that with Liberals that want to make sure everyone is fed, the game is not rigged, no one should fear losing a job because the boss is in a foul mood, and that when some manage to actually rig the game and take thousands of times more than they could ever possibly use that we take it back from them.. even if we wait until they die, then reclaim those resources as a public.

The analogy was accurate.. people refusing to consider the larger picture, driven by their own limited view of the world and wanting to impose their flawed thinking on others even if it kills them (the others). I've not met a well informed, intelligent, compassionate tea bagger yet. Period. I HAVE, however, met some Liberals and Progressives that see this pro-corporate government failing to do it's job.. but they don't hang out with the nut-job tea baggers even though they share that common understanding. 1% overlap does not a union make.

Kucinich is no flip-flopper. He has been entirely consistent in his positions. The only hope for real representation for the American people comes from candidates like Dennis Kucunich, Ron Paul, or Ralph Nader who typically poll at about one or two percent. People shun them at the polls, convinced by the boob tube that they are throwing away their votes. So we replaced Bush with Obama and guess what? We have exactly the same policies.
