Senate hearing disrupted as woman pours liquid on self

WASHINGTON — A Senate hearing on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was disrupted Wednesday as a protester poured an oily-looking liquid on herself before being arrested.

“This is what it feels like to have oil dumped on you,” the woman, identified as Diane Wilson, said in comments addressed to Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Wilson issued a statement issued later saying she is a fourth generation shrimper from the Gulf and that her protest was directed against Murkowski for supporting the oil industry and opposing measures such as lifting the liability cap on oil firms in offshore spills.

Wilson opened a jar and poured a dark, oily-looking substance on her head at the hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, before being taken away by Capitol police. Committee staff said later the jar contained syrup.

“With this BP disaster, I am seeing the destruction of my community and I am outraged,” Wilson said in her statement.

“I am also seeing elected representatives like Senator Lisa Murkowski blocking BP from being legally responsible to pay for this catastrophe.”

At the hearing, US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told lawmakers offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico will continue “in a safe way” in the wake of the massive Deepwater Horizon accident.

Salazar told the committee that a range of new regulations implemented following the accident at the BP-operated well would protect against new spills.

“Offshore drilling will continue… it has to be done in a safe way,” he told the panel.

Salazar, who heads the agency that oversees oil leasing and management of federal lands, highlighted tougher safety rules imposed this week for offshore drilling and the reorganization of the Minerals Management Service, the division which has been criticized for being too cozy with the oil industry.

But he said the rules would not halt all offshore drilling despite the six-month moratorium on new deepwater wells ordered by President Barack Obama last month.

“The importance of the jobs is very much on the mind of the president and on my mind as well,” Salazar said.

He told Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana that the administration would ask BP to pay salaries of oil sector workers whose jobs have been suspended by the drilling ban.

According to committee figures, the Gulf of Mexico has some 3,600 wells or drilling operations and 700 of them are at depths of around 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) like the Deepwater Horizon.

Salazar confirmed that BP was capturing around 15,000 barrels a day from a new device placed on the wellhead, but was unable to estimate how much was still leaking.

“It is important for us to have the right number. We’ll get that right number,” he said.

“Our goal is get zero pollution from this well. Nothing is being spared to bring this problem under control.”

It's nice to know, up front, that ANYTHING Murkowski tries to get passed on any subject that tries to limit the EPA's ability to enforce the Clean Air Act will now be VETOD BY OBAMA…

Go home to your lacky, dwindling supporters in Alaska and hide under a tarp… You're done..

  • trevinla

    thank you Diane Wilson

  • panamarick

This lady doesn't get it. All we are allowed to do in this country is place flowers at a site, light candles and hold meet-ups or munches. Proactive demonstrations of any kind are a violation of the patriot act, especially if those acts interrupt commerce.

“At the hearing, US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told lawmakers offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico will continue “in a safe way” in the wake of the massive Deepwater Horizon accident.”

so if this happens again I am sure you have a plan to stop the leak . eh?

    of course not

  • Get Real

Way to go Diane – You Rock!

The disaster environmental bill being co-authored by Senator John Kerry, would block the EPA's ability to enforce the Clean Air Act. I'm not kidding, look it up. Obama will sign that legislation once it is taken up again in the Senate. That legislation will also have huge subsidies for Big Oil, expansion of deep water drilling in the Atlantic and Alaska, and huge subsidies for the revival of Nuclear Power, and not to mention more money for so-called 'clean coal'.

I truly wish we had a President, and Democratic Party that contrasted sharply with anti-environmentalist Republicans, but sadly that is no longer the case.

“”The importance of the jobs is very much on the mind of the president and on my mind as well,” Salazar said.”

and that importance exists because we refuse to move forward as a people. We continue to let the few own and control the planet that belongs to all of us, not just those that were lucky enough to be born before or to a controlling family. Money is designed to represent physical assets in the real world, and was created in a time when getting at resources was difficult and dangerous (and everyone has access to roam into the wilderness and claim land as their own). Money is a form of power and slavery, and we need jobs because slaves that care for themselves put less strain on the slave masters; slave masters own the land and live like kings while everyone else toils for scraps.

and apparently it is more important to employ the few to make riches for the even fewer while destroying all possibility for the vast many to have any kind of living at all. The hundreds of thousands of people that just lost their livelihoods to this disaster, who have no other options, can't all be put to work building oil rigs (that will pollute us to death anyway). Want to create jobs? make busywork for the public who want it, paid for by money gotten from OUR OIL.. but instead, we keep letting the very few take public oil and reap huge rewards, and then abdicate them of all responsibility when their greed destroys huge parts of our nation.

This simple minded bullshit is gonna kill us all.

  • Savantster

it's cute how they pretend we just need a few more regulations to “keep it safe”.. we _already had_ those regulations in place.. we have no OVERSIGHT, and that's not about to change. If BP had been inspected, if the Government had sent agents out to go over the records, they would have found that BP was VIOLATING THE LAW already. Instead, they pretend the law didn't cover it, that it was “not conceivable” before hand. … safety equipment not working, redundant systems not working.. all documented failures, but no one (with authority) LOOKED. More rules doesn't fix that.

  • harry canary

salazar is concerned about the oil rig jobs but thousands more have been lost in fishing and tourism.

  • http://biscuits007.wordpress.com/ protobone

At the hearing, US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told lawmakers offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico will continue and “BP owns my sorry ass and so I must take the BP position and protect those that I am in obligation to. We can trust BP to do what they always do which is rape, pillage, and pollute.”
Jeez Herr Salazar, you sure are a servile little lickspittle. Huzzah to Diane Wilson.

  • RiggyMoo

Too bad all those lowlife, corrupt senators and other politicians cant be tossed into the oil soaked water so they really can see for themselves. Lowlife bought and paid for losers they are.

Why does Diane hate the troops? Sorry, just practicing to be a Faux News corporate lackey ass hat, I mean, journalist.

Salazar: “our goal is to have zero pollution.” While you're making wishes on that magic lamp, how about world peace and a cure for cancer? Or was the end of his sentence cut off? “…. before the end of all mankind on earth.” Douchebag.

  • Jng3

    thank you neighbor

  • Chophouse

Salazar needs to be let go. He was a joke in the first place as Interior Secretary and it has stopped being funny

  • Olin

Gonna take a LOT more of this sort of protest to convince congress critters that anybody with a brain cell left that NOBODY wants BP let off the hook for the ENTIRE cost of this disaster. The very idea that BP's liability is capped at any number below the company's ne worth is, not to put too fine a point on it, assinine, and those politicians who believe in protecting BP at the cost of their fellow Americans' livelihoods need a quick refresher course in “we, the people,” right before removal from office.

  • Thomas G Williams

You were on what planet since 1980? cause you were not on earth in the US.

  • Sarcasmlost

hell, no one caps damages at individuals (or most corporation's) net worth…that's why there is bankruptcy. Drive these fucking felons into Chapter 11.

  • Lyman

“Our goal is to get zero pollution from this well?”
…a little fuckin' late now, doncha think?

  • Unclebarbara

Well, if the victims of this disaster (and I really think it will be a large portion of the population and wildlife in this hemisphere) recieve treatment from the government similar to the treatment vets recieve when they get home, I'd say they (we) are in huge trouble.
Folks….the government doesn't give a crap and hasn't for many years. Wake up.

  • dnamj

    Right on! More please.

  • Lyman

She should have used real oil.
That way she could have easily slipped away from the cops.

  • jdouglas

Maybe if more and more of these things happen, and the police keep on arresting them, and it gets out to the people, the people will eventually begin to figure out which side the police are really on.

  • MIKELA

Well nothing will happen….nothing to see here. The US is a corporation owned by a consortium of very large transnational business interest. Our government does not exist for the benifit of people like Diane Wilson.

Message to the Tea Partiers: If you want your country back, you can start by demanding the seizure and nationalization of all of BP assets. Utilize them to clean up the US Gulf Coast over the next 50 years.

  • reyrey

How about not having a hearing about what Salazar is estimating and have a hearing about removing him.

    He's as incompetent as Allen.

  • LieBuster

    Ditto.

  • Olin

Well, as I understand, there IS a cap of 75 mil in existing law being argued in congress now over this, not to mention that BP has an out anyway so long as they're paying a pttance to damaged fishermen, in that they cannot bring suit until their claims have seen no payment at all for 90 days. In any event, BP should absolutely be brought to its knees and beyond.

  • guest@@

You want to see these problems go away? Give up your cars, boats, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, jet-liners, etc. Until then, you're a hypocrite, so STFU!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3RS3PWNQOYVFJGDDPXEYV42GXQ christlifted

The first three words of our constitution reads we the people. So the question is who represents the people. B P cannot effectively cap the oil spill; which will cause billions of dollars in lost fishing and tourism revenues.. So why would anyone in their right mind put a 75 million dollar cap on awards paid out by oil companies. Where is the attorney general when you need him. I guess some industries and individuals are to big for law enforcement.

  • Pablo Cruz

I'm sorry Diane, but your red states have cried “drill baby drill” for so long that really, you deserve this. You let them trick you and California did not. You can come visit our beaches anytime.

  • johnniefavorite

Yeah I think these just do not give a flying fuck. No seriously those guys in congress (well 'cept for Kucinich and maybe a couple of others) do not give a flying fuck. I think the only thing these guys hear is wallets opening … well that and maybe gunshots.

  • mct14

really? continue off shore drilling. Thats like driving on a icy dangerous road and creating the biggest car crash in history then returning to that road the next day and taking the same perilous route. I am reminded of something Albert Camus said: ” Stupidity has a knack of getting its way.” SHAME SHAME SHAME.

Pablo, please google “diane wilson activist” and see her track record of HEROIC environmental activism, especially is states adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. She has never been tricked, never been silent. Diane has spoken out even when her life was threatened, her home under siege, and her dog shot. And all her actions are non-violent and meaningful. Diane Wilson is determined, informed and courageous.

When the violent response comes from the citizenry — as it always does, e.g. read Schama's Citizen about the French Revolution — it will unfortunately largely be directed at those most easily seized. As in the French Revolution many more or less innocent people will be affected. Those on the periphery, say working for BP or the Federal/State government will be the first injured by common rage — think hapless census worker.

It would behoove those elements of power on the periphery — the cogs of the machine so to speak — to start thinking now about with whom to throw in their lot, the state or the people.

It would probably be wise to turn on your corporate lords early rather than later. Remember, guillotines worked fine ultimately on royalty, including the king and queen of France.

Don't be stupid. The lords of the land, the PTB, won't protect you: why should you protect them?

Part of the bribe BP gave Law Makers was to have bloggers spin the truth it's working well. Now someone has to tell Rep. Boehner to stop talking. Boehner just announced the taxpayers should pay the full cost of the clean up and BP/Halliburtion should not pay a dime. Republican GOP will fight Obama on this and make sure there are enough votes to protect the Oil Company. BP has hired many of Bush's appointees to spread the word as the new RNC policy is to pay citizens for support. Look it worked in California as E Meg Whitman gave 80 dollars for each vote to win. We've seen for 8 years our Government and Law Makers could and were paid off for votes/protection and now the blame to go to Obama. Headlines will read after Rep. Boehner/GOP pass the bill that Taxpayers pay in full the spill cost, then it will be blame on Obama for letting it happen. Vote Republican they support the people, impeach Obama. If McCain/Palin had won this wouldn't be a problem for BP as the taxpayers would not have a voice and remember Cheney Halliburton's CEO made sure the contracts were given to OIl Companies without any oversight or rules. But then again the truth and facts are something Americans don't bother with it's the Fox News, GOP that are believed.

I'd like to add Housing/Foreclosure and Bankruptcy reform to the list.

The Chosen One promised to amend the laws (that Biden wrote in 05) to help
homeowners stay in their homes thru court restructuring – see HR 1106 2009.

But he then turned the entire program over to Biden to amend. AS IF.
So the man who,as senator from a state with few if any usury laws and who's son reportedly made millions acting as a lobbyiest for the banking cabal, was now in charge of correcting the laws he wrote. TOO FUNNY.

There are 10's of millions of Americans like my self who were living within their means. We have stable jobs and incomes yet still can't make it, even in so-called bankruptcy 'protection'. Hell, my attorney ask why I wanted to do this. Walk away was his suggestion. Really, walk away from equity and years in a stable hard working community.

Something is soooo wrong with this country today. What happened to all that (albeit phoney) upbeat attitude everyone seemed to have?

I guess this is what happens when you elect someone with no public service experience, who comes from the Friedman school of economics, who praised Reagan and who's favorite line during the first year of his term was 'It's congresses job'.

    HOPE and CHANGE my ass.

Here's my question: Why are we drilling in 5,000 feet of water in the first place?

Many reasons, but this one goes unmentioned: Environmental chic has driven us out there. As production from the shallower Gulf of Mexico wells declines, we go deep (1,000 feet and more) and ultra deep (5,000 feet and more), in part because environmentalists have succeeded in rendering the Pacific and nearly all the Atlantic coast off-limits to oil production. ( President Barack Obama's tentative, selective opening of some Atlantic and offshore Alaska sites is now dead.)

And of course, in the safest of all places, on land, we've had a 30-year ban on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

  • AustinTX

Excellent comment Jonny! We need structural changes. For example if you accept a federal contract you are not allow to lobby. The financial industry has morphed from the the brain of our economy into a parasite. 60-70% of the volume of global trade is speculative. 35-45% of the US profits come from the financial industry. which is a joke and a shame when there function is simply to allocate capital efficiently . the only way this will change is to have a strong government that creates rules to reduce speculative trade, leverage, and whatever conflicts of interest that lead to bubbles that wipe out trillions of dollars of wealth.

Spot on, spot on I totally agree with you. We are being destroyed and many of us can't even fathom it. And I will tell you why, they can't believe old Jimmy boy or Rex or whomever that they voted for and even went to their church on sundays with them would be out to sell the American people out. They can't believe that, they just can't. Because everything they believed would have been wrong and they would have been the biggest fools on this planet. Nobody likes to be told that they have been had. Our leaders think they are clever and part of the team, little do they realize that your only part of the Powers that Be team if you have been part of the team for decades and/or centuries. They look at world leaders and/or govt. officials as pawns, useful idiots that can make the other useful idiots in their country to vote or cheer or make fun of the things that would save them from destruction.

We are a people that got the leaders we wanted, and they are paying us back with interest.

Which jobs there kenny, the oil-parasites or the fisheries and tourism jobs? Cause I can hazard a pretty good guess as to which are basically gonna be wiped out by this and, shockingly, it's not the oil jobs.

But thank god you're worried about the oil jobs. Fuck those fishermen, hotel clerks, cooks, tour guides, charter captains, divers, naturalists, and all those small business owners anyway…gotta protect those oil companies and their employees.
