This is different than a circumcision. People become overly dramatic with things and begin to clump them together without thoroughly thinking through their thoughts. A circumcision is a practice that dates back to BEFORE the Jews were “told by god” to do it. I dont believe the doctor involved is getting his jollies out of the experience. It sounds fairly clinical. Many adult women have a similar procedure. Since very young children are not able to judge the 'appropriateness' of the size of their genitals, the real problem seems to be with the parents and their seriously misguided views on what is 'normal'. I am a bit surprised that the doctor involved would agree to perform this procedure on someone so young. The decision to alter ones genitals should be made once a person is fully mature and can make decisions for themselves. The local medical ethics board needs a good kick in the pants (no pun).

A large clitoris that does not interfere with bodily processes should never be cut on unless the person is of age to decide cosmetically that she wants it reduced. The man's a pediatrician, and the procedure was actually suggested as a beginning to his experiment to see whether he could do the surgery without harming the nerve endings. I see nothing wrong with this surgery being done to possibly advance the study of the effects of plastic surgery on sexual organs.

What I can't understand is who would perform this surgery that honestly won't have any potentially positive effects until adulthood or at the very least adolescence…… on a five year old child.

Probably the vast majority of men who commit sexual violence have been circumsized, but even more of them probably wear pants. If you will simply look at Greek and Roman male paintings, pottery, sculptures and other art, you will see there are NO circumcised men in those works. They did not practice that. You know what they used to do in a country a long time ago? They would place newborns who had just been recently been born a day or two beforehand and place them in a molded plastic constraint and strap him down. Then the Dr. would put a forcep tool inside his foreskin and scrape the adhesion along the glans of the penis (similar to putting a knife underneath your fingernail). There's a legitimate argument to be made that male circumcision should, when performed, be done at the patient's consent. That said, it doesn't include any sort of rather violating follow-up exam, runs almost no risk of destroying sexual function in the future, and, frankly, doesn't sound anywhere near as horrific as this procedure.

And I'm saying this as a circumcised male–I don't, frankly, care one way or another since I don't remember it and I seem to be doing fine.

This does seem to be sanitized female “circumcision” (misnomer if ever there was one), though it's hard with cultural things like this where it may be ingrained in both parents. It's also, I suppose, possible that it's a sensationalized description of a procedure being done to people with severe sexual deformities, though even if that were the case the follow-up procedure sounds just plain wrong, even if on paper it might make sense as a way to determine long-term side effects. That's a situation where you really should just rely on self-reporting, even if said reporting is unreliable coming from children.

Did anyone bother to the read the actual study in question? In contrast to Savage, who claims that “there's nothing wrong with these girls and their healthy, functional-if-larger-than-average clitorises”, the vast majority of the girls in this study had congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which is a very severe and deadly developmental condition, or had other problematic conditions. This was not merely aesthetic surgery.

Furthermore, anyone that can so easily confuse capillary perfusion and a biothesiometer with a “vibrator” should not be trusted at all. It is extremely hard for the human nervous system to detect the 'vibrations' of a biothesiometer – and even when the threshold sensitivity of the nerve ending is reached, it is experienced as a sense of pressure, not a vibration.

This is purely sensationalism and feigned outrage.

I would agree that in some cases this type of surgery would be necessary. I just googled congenital adrenal hyperplasia, so yes, there are sometimes reasons. But this is something that simply is not not being handled well. The follow up exams should not be as callous. If other medical professionals want to learn about this, it would seem pictures would suffice, and could be obtained without traumatizing the patient.
With the current surge of vaginal rejuvenations and genital plastic surgery, this is a slippery slope, and the fact that it involves children makes it all the more suspect, especially with the APA signing off on it. Hopefully, the attention this has received, being it sensationalized or otherwise, will keep this within the confines of true medical necessity.

This procedure sound very questionable. BUT, genital abnormalities do happen and to bar someone from treatment would be just as terrible as having a doctor get off on cutting up little girls.

The question is, is an enlarged clitoris a bona fide medical condition needing to be treated via surgery. That answer is likely in almost all case a resounding NO! But, it is also likely that there are some cases where the size of the clitoris could be a hindrance to daily productive life and effects seriously the quality of life of some females. In those cases multiple medical opinions should be required before any procedure. Especially concerning a child.
