A rare and endangered species of sea turtle is being burned alive in BP’s controlled burns of the oil swirling around the Gulf of Mexico, and a boat captain tasked with saving them says the company has blocked rescue efforts.

Mike Ellis, a boat captain involved in a three-week effort to rescue as many sea turtles from unfolding disaster as possible, says BP effectively shut down the operation by preventing boats from coming out to rescue the turtles.

“They ran us out of there and then they shut us down, they would not let us get back in there,” Ellis said in an interview with conservation biologist Catherine Craig.

Part of BP’s efforts to contain the oil spill are controlled burns. Fire-resistant booms are used to corral an area of oil, then the area within the boom is lit on fire, burning off the oil and whatever marine life may have been inside.

“Once the turtles get in there they can’t get out,” Ellis said.

Dr. Brian Stacey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told NPR last week that, although there are five different species of sea turtle in the Gulf of Mexico, the majority of the ones found affected by the oil spill are Kemp’s Ridleys, “the rarest of them all.”

Ellis confirmed that he’s mostly been seeing Kemp’s Ridleys.

Mike Michael at Gather.com reports that Kemp’s Ridleys are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Harming or killing one “carries stiff fines and civil penalties ($500-$25,000) assessed for each violation. Criminal penalties include possible prison time and fines from $25,000-$50,000.”

Michael suggests that, given the size of the fines BP could face as a result of the turtle deaths, the company may be happy to let turtles burn, as it would make it impossible to calculate exactly how many turtles died. He notes that the bodies of dead animals are being kept as evidence to determine how much in fines BP will be liable for.

“Is BP destroying evidence to keep their liability down?” he asks. “Is anyone going to stop them?”

Asked if he had suffered health problems as a result of being exposed to the chemicals swirling around the Gulf, boat captain Ellis said he had been suffering from “pretty wicked headaches,” but said he didn’t know “if that was just from seeing everything you know just destroyed and just disgusting.”

The following video was posted to YouTube by Catherine Craig, June 13, 2010.

And the republicans apologize to BP and call anyone critical of their actions a bully?

This is the world the regressive right wingers want, mean, evil and greedy.

  • http://biscuits007.wordpress.com/ protobone

Would it be overtly rude to suggest that BP's Tony Hayward be burned at the stake?

  • wiseturtle

    You forgott: racist war mongers.

    Yes, homophobic racist war mongers.

  • Satan

Wow, kind of a big article for burning turtles. As horrific as it is, I wonder why the media ignores the murders of civilians by U.S. forces?

  • wial

Think it through. Good people don't go to work for oil corporations to begin with. Imagine their culture. Sneering sexists, right wing engineers, money mad marketing agents, macho climate change denying ideologues — and because they don't have a retail commodity that's easily boycotted, no sensitivity to social pressure.

The very institution of extractive industry is harmful to our humanity. This is just one of many cases in point.

  • gypski

One can only wonder the same thing about the Taliban and other vermin.

  • Tio Holtzman

If financial institutions were stuck in that oil, then the government would have already imprisoned BP for their chicanery.

  • piltdown

Maybe if the US didn't kill their democratically elected President and install an oil-company friendly Shah, we wouldn't be in this mess.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Last I checked, the Taliban were composed of only human beings and not “vermin”. Human beings are not and cannot be accurately described as vermin, unless you are a Nazi, in which case the expression is and has long been used freely.
    Are you a Nazi, gypski?

Too bad the miserable administration was not more rigorous in its inspections because if it had been this disaster would not have happened. Too bad the administration prefers facing union junk and refused to allow foreign skimmers to assist in containment.

  • http://twitter.com/crazzeeedave dave

To bad the rethugs won't allow new dept heads to be hired to drive out the bushinistas who have in the past literally especially with the mms been in bed with the oil companies and the murderers in the coal mine industry. oh and btw look up the jones act of 1920 the president has been working on getting it pushed to the side so foreign entities can be brought in in addition to the Danes and several other countries already in the gulf. oh and it was your apparently good buddy W who allowed the corporate enslavement we now have to clean up

  • BP Sucks

I wonder if Tony gets aroused by this? Maybe thats why they are permitting it? Sick bastard

  • tazdelaney

intolerable, disgusting, evil garbage corporatists. burn them alive and who would miss them? burn their buildings to the ground. but…

we need to realize our own complicity in the rape and murder of mother nature. back in about 1989, i read an article in teh times… it was about bushmen. there was this photo i still have of these bushman children playing as the props in a tanzanian theme park. the kids were naked being watched by an american kid in his MTV duds. i felt sorrier for the white boy. he'd never likely feel the sun or wind on his naked butt, shut off from the life force as we are.

in the text, a wise old bushman leader was translated saying… 'white man came and measured the land; then proclaimed that they owned it. we have always known that you cannot own the land; the land owns us. then he went on to say, “those who call themselves 'the civilized' live off of the world like parasites. we have always lived with the world, as participants.”

in caesar's day, there were half a billionn of us. in 1900, 1 billion. we wil hit 7 billion in2011. it wil have taken since 1999, 12 years to produce a bilion new bodies. it took the first 200,000 years of homosapiens to produce the first billion. the grotesque mismanagement of the industrial revolution has produced voer 20 global environmental disasters which are congruing into a catastrophe. is it time to pray for a medium-sized asteroid to save mother nature from us?

It just keeps getting better and better.

  • S in PA

Interesting that the powers that be won't call this eco-terrorism but will call a protester outside a BP station an eco-terrorist.

  • None

This pisses me off! I want somebodies head for this! Burning these turtles, dolphins, and other sea creatures alive? Somebody needs to put a bullet to these mother-fuckers.

  • SynGas

It's not that the media ignores the murders of civilians, the media is censored. Turtles are endangered, humans are not, on the other hand, the cultural genocide that the U.S. has done throughout it's relatively short history, is pretty horrific. At this point, turtles are much cuter than humans and more innocent. It's also a newer story, humans have been killing off humans forever. It's not everyday that a rare turtle becomes extinct because of the evilness and greed of a corporation and apathy of a Lobbyist owned government that preaches democracy, freedom and the pursuit of happiness and all that other b.s. Who gave the permits to do deep sea drilling? Who smothers the idea of fossil “alternative” fuels? Allister Crowley would probably even be shocked by these burning rare turtles.

  • gr8fuldaniel

“They ran us out of there and then they shut us down, they would not let us get back in there,”
The rescuers need to hire some security, it seems.

  • jay

What about some anti BP mercenaries.

  • SynGas

Fossil fuels and Nukes can be boycotted, it just takes a bit of effort since the infrastructure has to be created from below. Now is the time to do just that, in the meantime, hurl Poop at BP gas stations. I will never buy anything from a BP ever again. Even if I have to walk another 666 miles to get fuel, I won't buy it from BP. This is a crime scene and the criminals are being allowed to destroy the evidence which in turn will bring about the extinction of many species. There is no way in Hell that they will be able to repair the damage they are creating. BP should be dismantled. Stop the bullshit wars in the middle east and bring the troops to the Gulf to dismantle BP and clean up the mess with openness and transparency. The Bush family aided the Nazis before and during WW2. I doubt such justice will come to pass, however, given the horrors of this situation it's time that people learn about the truth. There is definitely incentive now to find out what is going on. How are you going to explain to your kids why there is Oil and death all over the beaches? How are you going to tell them about the horrible fate of the U.S. and the effect on the rest of the world? Teach them about Smedley Butler. War is a racket. It's way past time to bring the war to Big Oil. Learn to cut back on fossil fuel purchases. Know that if you join the military you are nothing more than a pawn for the bankers of Big Oil. Push the alternative fuel technologies. Boycott fossil fuels as best you can.

  • Burning Turtle

The foreman what went ahead with the bad part is to blame mostly… but yea both of them.

  • Juan Valdez

hey vincent I remember you. aren't you that half-man half-lion that used to be on tv?

  • reyrey

It would seem that the turtles could dive deep enough to avoid the fire. I wouldn't think they need to be on the surface of the water.

But if BP's motives are to destroy the evidence of tortured and willfully killed creatures and preventing anyone access who could rescue them prior to igniting their fire, they should get sentenced to 30 days in the electric chair!

  • pist

endangered species act doesnt mean shit where bp is concerned obama put them above the law just like he did bush

  • jimbeaux

“It would seem that the turtles could dive deep enough to avoid the fire”

I'm guessing that having the surface of the Gulf of Mexico on fire – is not something they normally experience.

  • Barneymac17

Too bad BP execs won't be sent to Angola prison for their crimes where they could be passed around.

  • Turtlelover

I had a plan that involved send out several shrimp boats wil full crew that had been sitting idle, and equipped with a child's wading pool with fresh water, turtle clean off substances, and at least two college students who had been unable to find job, and who are majoring in marine biology. they would patrol waters west of the Mississippi Delta with their turtle trap doors in the nets TEDs SHUT, as opposed to open, which is the only legal way to trawl. The DIFFERENCE IS they would surface every 15 minutes “on the dot” so not turtles in the net would drown. The students would wash off the oiled turtles , mostly Kemp's ridley, and when the boat had a dozen or so turtles of all species, they would head to shore, alerting more experienced turtle rescuers via radio of the “catch.” All bye catch hauled up would be immediately returned to the sea, healthy or clean. The turtles would be further cleaned onshore and then flown to the Chesapeake Bay by the various Air Force National Guard units of the four affected states, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi and Louisians. This would at least cut down somewhat on the deaths of adult and hatchling Kemp's ridley turtles, the ONLY major species of animal that lives almost its entire life in the Gulf of Mexico. I write as a retired NBC News and Voice of America correspondent who has covered the Kemp's ridley “saga” of returning from near extinction for 25 years. I am currently going NUTS over what is happening and the zero response I have had from two Congressmen and the White House to whom I have written with my PLAN. Andrew Guthrie, Reston, Virginia

  • Barneymac17

Unfortunately, they are covered with thick oil and they are having difficulty seeing, breathing and swimming.

  • hneftafl

BP is an oil company and oil companies power the military. I think that's about all that needs to be said.

  • Jsarizona

    fuck you

  • Abbey

they were doing this stuff for obama. i think its irresponsible to simply blame obama. george bush & dick cheney were born & bread out of oil companies. i think its safe to say you can point a finger at them before obama. obama came into bush's shit storm & is trying to fix things, but he can't fix it all at once.

  • Abbey

sorry, i meant to say, “they were doing this stuff BEFORE obama.”

  • MemphisBill

What does that statement “They ran us out of there and then they shut us down, they would not let us get back in there,” really mean? What if you refused to go what would they do? That goes for people taking pictures of stuff too. Refuse to go. What are they going to do about it?

  • Gutsy

Oh, please. Obama did not put them above the law. They put Obama below the law.

  • Byron

I don't understand, why is BP calling the shots in public waters?

if so, you're still sleepwalking …

remember voting republican or democrat only perpetuates the myth, cause your reps do not represent you and haven't for about a generation and a half now …

  • Lol

Just…. Okay. Let me guess. You “care” about the environment and think violence is not the answer. Get America out of the middle east because they're horrible monsters.

Stop for one second and think. WHO gives you the freedom to wish death on others? Who has allowed you to think for yourself (I assume) and be an individual? Who allows you to comment on blogs like this with your opinion?

That's right. Your enemy: The United States Government and the branches of the Military. By fighting these horrible wars and dying FOR YOU AND EVERY OTHER FREE COUNTRY, they have allowed you peace and prosperity for another day. If not for the United States, you could probably not have an opinion of your own, just what someone else told you think.

  • jimbeaux

If this is how they act in “our backyard” – imagine what they're doing in third world countries (no cameras).

  • michaelronquillo

they will put you in jail!!!! the politicians are bought and paid for! we need to get a couple of million people to bring boats and cameras and overwhelm them that is our only chance of getting the truth out! i just can't believe that the american public is going for this media blackout bullshit!

I'm done. I want out of this country. I always thought things would get better, until G.W.Bush. and the Iraqi war. I knew we were screwed. I knew “America” was gone, and wasn't coming back.
Then Obama came along with his pretty speeches & some optimistic feelings returned, for about 6 months. Now it's a matter of which country I can get into at my age. How f-ing tragic.

  • SW

Why would you assume that anything would be different from Bush to Obama? Bush =Obama employed by the same people. Presidents are selected not elected, Obama has carried on everything that Bush started. Wheres that end to the patriot act? simply they are both actors employed to make the American people swallow whatever BS is thrown in our direction form the financial elite. Welcome to the NEW WORLD ORDER = CORPORATISM its already here.

I find it kind of sad that most people cant figure out that America died a long time ago. Its a wholly owned corporation now. Go to war when its profitable, kick your ass out of your house when its profitable wreck the economy when its profitable, get you sick and keep you sick. It is very disturbing how well they can program someone into believe this is the land of the free and all the BS.

  • starvapor

They would rise to breathe fire.

  • KatWillow

    WRONG. FAIL.

The Government doesn't GIVE us anything, the Government is OUR servant.

Well, that was how it was intended, designed to be.

The wars you so stupidly say are “protecting” us are making the existence of the United States more precarious every day that we are illegally there. Everyone with 2 brain cells to rub together -Even Neocons and Wingnuts- know we are in Iraq to serve and protect OIL COMPANIES like BP. We are in Afghanistan in the deluded belief that we can Rape the country of its precious natural resources while the rest of the World does nothing.

These wars, this brainless acceptance of the Right & Goodness of America and our government, and everything it does, has been drilled into those people with trusting Authoritarian minds so that those individuals will not only fund and fight in these wars, they will have a religious faith in their rightness. “Might = Right” in Your book.

This disaster carries all the classic signs of a manufactured crisis. This disaster was either planned and executed with prior knowledge or known an allowed to happen. BP and Goldman sachs are in bed together. 44% of company stock sold right before 270 million worth. Not to mention this plays exceptionally well for obama energy and cap and tax scam agendas. Not to mention Haliburton bought a company involved in clean up before the explosion on the well casing that it cemented. If they are willing to let terrorists slam planes into buildings for a pretext for the iraq war shit knows they are willing to blow up a well in the gulf and cause a major ecological disaster that they benefit from. No one is concerned about the economy anymore as if we are in a recovery. I cant laugh about it because the pain that is coming the average americans way, my way from this economic crisis is just to hard to explain in words.

  • KatWillow

This admin doesn't give a RAT'S ASS about “unions”. They HATE unions as much as Repugs, and wouldn't lift a pinky to aid unions. They are using unions as an excuse to let BP go its own way, wrecking everything in its Path and in its Wake. 20 Billion escrow? Yeah, I bet. I'll believe that when I see it. Tho at the rate BP is sickening and probably murdering with chemicals the Gulf workers, they may not have to pay out very much.

  • KatWillow

Well, 500 or so people blockaded an Israeli ship in Oakland CA today. Maybe 5,000,000 will go down to the Gulf and kick some Gov/BP ass.

  • KatWillow

No, Obama is not trying to fix anything. He seems to have ceded his power and authority to someone or some other entity (CIA? Military? who?) and Obama is now just a Figurehead President, as Bush was. Whatever group is REALLY in power obviously does not give a SHIT about the gulf or the creatures that inhabit it or live near it.

  • KatWillow

Well, is there something I/We could do to help you?

  • KatWillow

    'cause our Military “needs” them?

  • mnov

    This makes no sense.
First of all we know how many sea turtles there are, give or take, of what type and locale. Secondly How are sea turtles burned under water? The booms are on the surface and the fires are on the surface and the turtles are not on the surface. Makes no sense.

  • KatWillow

OT, but Marie Antoinette was maligned by her enemies. She did not say “let them eat cake” or any other such insensitive comment.

One cause of the revolution was rage of the people that a lot of their economic problems were due to the fact that while THEY were heavily taxed, the Aristocrats and Very Rich paid almost no taxes. Meanwhile France was embroiled in TWO foreign wars, one of them the US war of Independence. They helped America in hopes of causing England trouble, and maybe helping the French Businessmen grab some of England's Trade in India and the East Indies.

    Sound Familiar?

  • KatWillow

    Join the Green Party: http://www.gp.org/index.php

Or vote independent (Most of the indie parties on Google appear to be libertarian or religious or faux-repug). But politicians who run 'independent',like Bernie Sanders, aren't necessarily affiliated with a party.

  • AdriannaIorillo17

Please add my name to the list — Palin's positions are completely destructive to the environment and to wildlife. Her tea party affiliations position that there is “too much big government” amidst the outcome of 8 years of no regulatory governmental system in the auto, mining, banking, housing and oil industry astound all beliefs. While she is not officially running for a position, she successfully spreads stupidity and willful ignorance. Allowing her to have ANY say on the protected lands and creatures other than humans is horrific at best.

Every criminal Republican since Reagan and every criminal corporation knows what to do. GW Bush refined it to a methodological science. Just shred, burn or bury the evidence and act like an incompetent know-nothing during questioning. Our judicial system says, “Oh, no evidence in plain sight, no voluntary testimony, our job is done. Oh and tell the media the people who disagree with us they are just crazy conspiracy theorists”

Obama is failing because he's not a real democrat, and he's a corporate patsy, something repugnicans are from when they start either Little Lord Fauntleroy school, or the rural KKK ignorant swamplogger academy. This entire disaster is about ignoring the environment and pushing the dominance of fossil fuels, and that is 100% republican mantra since 1980, and you know it, so grow up once in your sorry lives. The only justice in this spill is that it's happening to the ignorant South and its once wealthy neighbor Florida, which sort of tried to preserve the environment, but is now going to pay for the crimes of its dirty sinner brothers, and is soon headed underwater, praise Jesus.

Animals die, and it's sad, but justice against ignorant facist right-wingers is real, no matter how sour for innocents. This is the work of God, punishing the South for centuries of ignorance, hubris and genocidal mania.

I hope we all remember the behavior of this company. It is a good demonstration of fascism. Here you have a corporation dictating to government. You see who really runs this country – not the people. You see that we are milked for whatever services we can pay for – but that the corporation is first in line for the services. Unless we deal with this fundamental inequity, we are doomed to be a banana republic. Ironically, the recommendations of General Honore, where the troops might return to their home to deal with the crisis (under the direction of the President) would be spun as fascism by the Tea Party types.

Actually, mnov, we do have a pretty good idea of how many turtles there are…not enough. That's why they are listed under the Endangered Species Act.

More importantly, here's the challenge I put to you: Fill a small pool with water and then pour gallons and gallons of gasoline, oil, diesel, antifreeze/petroleum distillates and terpentine in it. Get in, take a deep breath, submerge completely and then have a friend or family member light the hydrocarbons on fire. Get back to RAW readers with the results.

My hypothesis is that you will figure out the problem at some point during the experiment.

ZERO gas stations that have BP on their sign in the US are owned by BP, ZERO.

They are owned by your neighbors in your home towns.

If you need to boycott pumping BP gas, maybe you should boycott your own car. It makes more sense based on principle, not emotion.

Save your wondering. It's not America where the Taliban is killing people, and the puppet government we've installed over there is killing people too (and pushing heroin around the globe). Nothing the Afghans do to themselves is our concern. What our Government does, what our soldiers do, THAT is our concern and under our control.

Shame so many in this country like to pretend our raping and pillaging of nations is “ok”, but get angry when those we abuse lash out at us for abusing them.

Of course, that's what this article is about, too. How we're abused by the oil companies, but our government keeps letting them do it, and the public doesn't seem to care all that much. We can't build proper rage about this subject if there is no information about the abuses, so this article simply helps nudge a few more people from different groups toward that righteous rage. — and I agree, way too FEW articles (and pictures) of the atrocities both in the Gulf (most people still don't seem to know about the private army deployed by BP on American soil) and in the illegal occupations we're in all over the globe.

Real Freedom requires Real Knowledge. We're intentionally being kept ignorant.

  • Joe

Not sure what to think about this article. I'm all for saving all the wildlife, but if we are talking about burning the oil, we are talking about an area right in the thick of the gusher where traffic should be reserved for this dangerous procedure. I think priority should be with burning the oil. In the long run, that will save more turtles.

There comes a point where BP is damned if they do, damned if they don't. “Clean up the oil, no wait, a turtle got burned, let the oil spread and save that turtle!” Cmon folks.

    What do you suggest?

  • Savantster

They have a security force all paid for, and well geared for this kind of thing… it's called the U.S. Military.

the question is, why hasn't the “will of the people” been used to push these criminals at BP out of the way yet. Why is a Corporation allowed to deploy an armed military of their own in U.S. soil with the intent of blocking American Citizens from exercising their freedoms.

  • Savantster

What are they going to do about it? .. well.. the ARMED MERCENARIES, holding their machine guns, implies they will kill you. Not too many people willing to risk their lives for this, but then, that's why we have our own professional gun-toters. So the question is, why hasn't our military been deployed to fight back the Corporate Army that has invaded the Gulf.

  • Savantster

these aren't 20 foot wide pools, these are probably thousands of feet wide. Turtles are not fish, they breath air.. they can dive, sure, but how do you suspect a “turtle” understand what “burning off oil for thousands of feet” means, or how to avoid it?

These are animals. They can't think or reason about man-made things. If we're going to be tromping around this planet, we need to be the ones to use OUR big brains, OUR ability to think and reason and plan and modify the world. Blaming turtles for being burned alive from a man-made problem as a result of a man-made disaster simply makes no rational sense.

  • morty62

joe is right. At this point boycotting stations with a BP logo is sophomoric and only hurts average people, not those responsible. BP execs would love it if people took out their anger in this way rather than call for much tighter regulations, mandatory development and use of green technologies or a ban on all deep offshore drilling.

  • Savantster

You seem to be confusing surface air-breathing turtles with fish. Since there is a thick (almost 3 feet in places) layer of oil between the turtles and the air they breath, they must go through the oil to breath.. and now that oil is on fire.. Areas thousands of feet across are being lit up, and you think turtles are supposed to “understand” that they should take a deep breath and try to swim across while staying under water?

Tell me, genius…. who runs the schools that teaches turtles about fire, planning, oil, booms, rigs, and tool use? .. perhaps it's the same people that ran the school that taught you about nature, biology, physiology, and all the other things 8th graders should “understand” about the animal world.. that mostly being that animals don't have the big brains of humans, our brains are what set us apart from the bulk of all the other animals out there.. our ability to think and reason at the levels we do is near unique on this rock, and you blame turtles for dying because of the malfeasance of man?

  • Joe

It wouldn't need to be “spun” as fascism. The Governors should have control of the National Guard. Let Obama eat his fucking snowcones.

You just admitted that the government is fascist, and then immediately say that same government (owned by BP) should occupy our states AND if you disagree you are “spinning it as fascism”.

You are confused, and so are the people who “liked” your comments.

I live on the coast in AL (yeah, dumb redneck, for all you elitists), and I will go toe-to-toe with any of you regressive retards. This spill only solidifies the argument for STATES RIGHTS and LOCAL CONTROL. We have watched the Feds get in our way, lie about protecting Perdido pass, ground vacuum ships, deny assistance, and generally seem to WANT TO SPILL TO BE AS BAD AS POSSIBLE.

Get your lips off of OBAMAs ASS and think for yourself. How much regulation? How many Obamas would have stopped the spill?? 10 Obamas? 10 EPAs? Maybe 100 new laws? I watched everyone on RS jump down the throat of “Teabaggers” who didn't go along with “Financial Reform” that Wall Street wrote. You guys carry water for the same scammers that we bailed out with a trillion bucks, and next you'll carry water for BP who WANTS A command and control energy industry!!!!

WE know, some non-existent benevolent central authority would solve everything. Keep holding your breath. I'll fight for liberty, you fight for the state. I'm sure sooner or later, your side will do something right.

By the way, “Teabaggers” continue to be right:

    http://cnsnews.com/news/article/68094

Isn't it funny that the MSM has you guys all brainwashed into demonizing the only uprising to the bankster takeover via the sovereign debt crisis? I bet your feelings are different when you hear about the same things in Europe in places like Greece and Iceland. Hmm. Maybe its not a priority for the corporate US media to get you riled up about the countries' elites that YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO BAILOUT.

Well, see you at the Tea Parties in 3 years…when you start paying attention and half the right-wingers fall back alseep!!!

You said: “They have a security force all paid for…”

“THEY” are using that military force for oilfield conquests in Iraq and a pipeline Afghanistan.
“THEY” have been using our Coast Guard like a private Parking Lot Security Service.
“THEY” say jump, and Obama says, “How High?”

  • Joe

    GUESS WHY?

Because your politics belong in make believe land!!! There is no utopia!!

You don't know shit, so maybe ease up on who you call ignorant. That is the most loony statement ever. What does justice have to do with punishing innocents?

From us dumb hicks on the Gulf Coast: Go Fuck Yourself!

  • Joe

Morty, BP is firmly behind Obama's energy agenda. That is what makes this spill so very convenient. Also, don't forget! Your buddies at MSNBC stand to make a KILLING under and carbon trading scheme.

  • gr8fuldaniel

    BRAVO! Good point!

  • Karma

Hey Joe, where you going with that match in your hand? “I'm going down the Gulf way man, to burn sea turtles, 'for they make it to land”

  • Fenbeast07

The point is that BP is not permitting the people who have been TASKED with protecting the wildlife to do their job, because should these individuals find dead turtles, that adds to BP's tab. Should these individuals find live turtles, on the other hand, it could prevent the extinction of the Kemp's Ridley… something BP patently doesn't care about, because saving the Kemp's Ridley doesn't improve its stock price.

The other point is, burning the oil will NOT save more turtles, because whether you burn the oil or don't burn the oil, the turtles die. The only thing that would save more turtles is allowing the boats to go in and collect any live turtles and try to rehabilitate them. But that would also allow the boats to collect the dead turtles as well. And BP has a vested interest in hiding how many dead turtles there are (see point 1).

The Kemp's Ridley will likely be extinct as a result of BP's activities. What is the price of an irreplaceable animal species?

Um…no. YOU come on, Joe. Even assuming for the sake of argument that the premise of your analogy is correct, that does not explain or justify BP's illegal blockade of media access to document the ongoing crisis. Further, this story is consistent with other reports that BP employees, under cover of night, are illegally removing dead birds, baby dolphins, etc. as they wash up on the beach, so as to minimize potential criminal liability.

BP is neither as beleaguered or victimized as you appear to assert. You posit a fallacious analogy–that BP must either choose between burning the oil or rescuing the sea turtles. That's just not the case. These twin endeavors are not mutually exclusive; they can both be accomplished with undertaking a degree of due diligence and care. However, since BP faces criminal liability (not to mention amplified public outrage) over each and every animal that is killed, they indeed have an incentive NOT to save the wildlife.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, my foot.

Thorazine is available in a generic form now, Joe. I strongly suggest you look into it. Post haste.

  • 172pilot

Get over it.. First they're not doing enough, now you dont like what they're doing..

Look, NOBODY is looking to kill sea turtles, but if the oil isn't burned, it's going to FURTHER destroy the sea turtle's habitat, and they're going to die anyway.

I am NOT a fan of BP, but unless you've got a better idea, in which case, they're all ears.. Call them on (281) 366-5511 or fill out their form on the web. Otherwise shut up, get out of the way, and stop slowing down the process. There will be PLENTY of time for the couch quarterbacks to send in their bills and cast blame after the oil is cleaned up. Anything sooner than that is simply a distraction from the job at hand.

  • 172pilot

Compared to the LARGE BEACHES, and LARGE OCEANS, they are.. AND, if they dont get the oil shut down and cleaned up, the turtles will die anyway, so let them do their work, and get out of the way.. unless you have a better plan than the one they're using..

  • 172pilot

Right, but to let them in there, would be to put the PEOPLE in danger, and cause them to stop burning the oil, which, as you pointed out, would ALSO kill the turtles…

Let them do their jobs to stop the flow, and minimize the damage. It's better in the long-run.

  • 172pilot

Is it only because you have no facts or no response to a comment that you resort to useless name-calling? That's what's wrong with this country on ALL sides of the political spectrum.. People these days in general get personal and emotional in debates and go off on tangents in arguments instead of sticking to the facts..

The reality is that practically EVERY large corporation donates to BOTH major political parties, to cover their bases in case each wins.. There's enough blame to spread around here.. BP, the other oil companies, the Dems, the Republicans, and the bloated, non-partisan parts of the executive branch of the government (EPA, Mineral service, etc..)..

Regardless of your feelings on ANYTHING political, OR the extinction of a turtle, the MOST critical thing is to get that oil shut down and cleaned up… The political battle is a distraction. After the cleanup, the CITIZENS need to take a hard look at BOTH parties and remember their in-actions and political games when election time comes.

Save the turtles but contain the spill and spread of oil. Don't drill so close to shore OR on land but when an accident occurs, you figure out how to get a mile down and fix it. Because of the Jones Act (thanks union reps), don't take advantage of the 12 or so offers from other countries to help us w/this disaster. I like that wind idea just keep those unsightly windmills outta my view. Why can't we all just use ethanol? Who cares about the impact on the farmers in this country not to mention the water attracting properties and therefore eventual corrosive nature of ethanol. And how much corn was diverted from those less fortunate and HUNGRY parts of the world. OK, the sun will heat our homes. OMG, you want to charge me $200,000 to put PV shingles on my roof and it will take me 15 years to recover that cost and MAYBE move off the grid.

  • Sean Roaney

Joe, Joe, Joe. You are a prime example of why home-schooling should be illegal. Let an attorney explain this to you: The 1st ten amendments to the U.S Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights. They are not “suggestions”. They are not something someone's wife wrote on a “Honey Do” list. It is fully controlling law.

For an amendment to pass, it has to be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate. It must pass by a 2/3 vote in each chamber. Subsequently, the proposed amendment is submitted for consideration to each state of the union. 3/4 of the states must ratify the proposed amendment for it to prevail.

Your dubious claim that the 9th and 10th amendments were just suggestions by the founding fathers is laughable. Get back to community college, Billy Ray. I'm done teaching you remedial social studies.

  • Sean Roaney

ROFLMAO! You wanna go toe-to-toe with me, intellectually, Joe? I think we precluded that contest when I finished 3rd grade. And just so we're clear: if being an “elitist” means knowing how to spell, having all my teeth and not f*****g my sister, then call me Phil Donahue and pass me the creme brulee!

  • Bill

Put the BP executives in wetsuits and send _them_ in to rescue the turtles. That way you might save some turtles _and_ you'd avoid putting any “people” in danger, because I'm convinced some of these guys aren't. People, that is.

  • Bribelge

Of course that's why he put the word suggested in quotes, so we knew that he knew that they were not merely “suggestions”.

  • mnov

Okay first of all, I'm not a genius. I didn't say I was. To my (limited) we're talking about sea turtles. Yes they swim, and they swim underwater, and they also breathe air. Got it. Also the oil plume is not just on top of the water, it's also under the surface. Got that. Fire: Fire needs oxygen to burn and so it's only burning at the surface and so therefore I think the claim that BP is rounding up sea turtles in the booms and setting them on fire is well overly dramatic not realistic and probably not even true.
The problem is the oil is suffocating ALL MARINE LIFE not just the sea turtles. I love sea turtles. I love the gulf. I'm upset about this. I just don't think making up ridiculous stories and posting them as legitmate news is really helping the situation, so basically shut up.

  • mnov

Hi crack baby. We already know how many turtles there are give or take just like I said. That's how certain types got put on the endangered species list. Have full confidence BP will be charged for every turtle and believe they will be accounted for. I know I am.

  • mnov

666 fire needs oxygen to burn. Oxygen like is above the surface. Not a republican I'm a democratic I'm just not a liberal like you.

  • mnov

HaHA. But sea turtles and I believe that we are talking about sea turles are we not? Live underwater. Fire burns at the surface. Fire needs oxygen to burn.

  • mnov

Ik I am so for this. Then I realized the conflict of interest the government erred when it put a CHEMICAL company in charge of cleanup: Guess what? Chemical companies USE CHEMICALS. They don't DO hay. Big mistake. Huge.

  • mnov

    HaHA

  • mnov

Can't boycott BP Oil: Oil companies trade oil every day and so when you go the shell, you could be pumping BP or the Exxon you could be pumping shell or BP. You can boycott your local retail station however what you are doing then is putting a local franchise owner (probably a small business person) out of business, and if you live in america your local economy will suffer.
To fix this we need to stop depending on oil period. Use paper etc.

  • mnov

Also probably BP is keeping the other boats out of the burn ring is well, is it obvious? I'm kind of surprised we're not seeing some more kinds of steven king explosion scenarios out there, or maybe we are…

  • CW

Just more proof that the government is in cahoots with BP. Obama claims he is in charge and has been from day one. This just proves he is not to be trusted or believed! If he is in charge like he claims, then he is a huge contributing part of this fiasco. If he is not in charge he is nothing but a liar! I don't know who you can believe anymore.

BP was given the rights to drill this oil well long before Obama became president. It is unfortunate that the people who oversee the oil rigs have done such a poor job of making sure they were doing things correctly. Those who don't like Obama say he has tried to impose government control on too many things. Well, look what not enough government control gets us!!!!!!

  • Yummertam

bp should be responsible for the wildlife they are killing, don't they make enough money that they could take another course of action?

    it's called sarcasm, people.
(s)he is saying that while most people are so upset at what's happening in the Gulf, they are unprepared to make any major changes to their way of life to avoid this kind of catastrophe in the future. Cleaner energy is the answer, but we have a long way to go before we can break our oil addiction.

  • Joemerint

While you may not be able to completely boycott a single oil company you can reduce your consumption of petroleum based products (plastic bottles, bags, synthetic textiles, bath products, pesticides… )

Just because its not easy, doesn't mean we should throw our hands up and say there is nothing we can do. we have choices, and we can choose to support companies and buy products that reduce our impact on the environment. Reduce, reuse, recycle (in that order)

Ummm, there's oil at multiple levels in the ocean. You're an idiot. The burn boxes have been widely written about. The wildlife in the gulf converges on floating carpets of the seaweed Sargassum, which also happen to be capturing enormous amounts of coagulated oil. What coral reefs are to some areas of the ocean, areas most filled with life and most supportive of sea life, Sargassum is to the Gulf. The vessels dragging booms capture these floating carpets and drag them into the designated burn box and are set on fire, still quite full of creatures who've been trapped there by the oil. Fire that hot leaves nothing behind but polluted water. You want to see the damage, then drag your ignorant ass down here and have a look for yourself.

No direct evidence? This story is only “He said/She said” and needs to be backed up with some direct video evidence of the boats being turned away by BP and turtles being cooked. Otherwise, it could just easily be a hit piece by socialists who want to demonize BP (more than they should be).

  • Miles

TURTLES THAT R BEING BURNED, R BEING BURNED UP!! HAVE U EVER SEEN THE AFTERMATH OF A CREMATION? THERE IS NOTHING BUT “DUST” BECAUSE FIRE BURNS THINGS TO ASHES! THESE ASHES WOULD THEN BE DILUTED INTO BILLIONS OF GALLONS OF OCEAN WATER, THAT IS BY NOW, MORE BP/TRANS OCEAN'S CRUDE OIL THAN ACTUAL SALT WATER. U R IGNORANT! WAKE UP!!

  • Lawnboymk07

They r not using the Oil containment booms as nets, they r creating an area inside the booms to burn the chemicals & any sea life that may unfortunately be inside the area they decide to burn… swimming downward will not unsure a turtle will make it out of the area in time or at all.

  • Chazowen

Again, you're an idiot. They are covered in oil and for the most part unable to move, swim, or navigate, much less save themselves from a fire that comes so quickly and burns so hot that they can't see it coming much less know what's about to happen to them and 'take evasive action' as you suggest by diving down. My God you are stupid. Have you never spilled oil, gasoline or lighter fluid, the fire follows the trail of it. Even if they could move away from it, the fire would follow them because it consumes everything in its path.

    FLOWIN’ IN THE GULF

How many roads must a man drive down, before you call him a man?
How many seas must a pelican sail, before she can sleep in clean sand?
Yes and how many times must oil be spilled, before it is forever banned?

    Refrain:

The answer my friend, is flowin’ in the gulf,
The answer is flowing in the gulf.

Yes and how many years can an oil rig exist, before it fails you and me?
Yes and how many years can some people exist, in a world of dying seas?
Yes and how many many times can you turn your head, and pretend that you just don’t see?

    (Refrain)

Yes and how many times must a man look up, before he can see a clear sky?
Yes and how many ears must one man have, before he can hear seabirds cry?
Yes and how many deaths will take till he knows, that too many creatures have died?

    (Refrain)

A valid news story does not need video. And it isn't difficult to demonize such horror.

  • OfAnonymous

first off, yall are the ones who are retarted, not him, hes right, a large turtle wouldnt be entirely incinerated, seeing as only the soft parts would get incinerated. remains of the shell and other bony parts would be left behind, its like if you covered a human in oil and set him on fire, his bones would still be there. and what hes besically saying is NOBODY HAS PROOF!!
you dont have proof, they dont have proof, and until SOMEONE shows some proof, im going to stay on the side of its all bullshit. oh and miles, crude oil only burns at 700 degress while a crematorium burns at 1500 degrees, and even after TWO HOURS of incineration in a crematorium, there are still pieces of bone left over which the grind up to give you that “dust” as you call it. try to be less ignorant next time.

  • Ecogal

The turtles breath air. Yeah they can dive down for a little while but they have to breath sometimes, duh. Why don't you do a little research before you post a stupid comment like that.

  • Kelly

I hate BP for this oil spill, but I agree that this story needs more evidence. No legitimate news source, ie CNN, MSNBC etc, has reported this, which I find very very odd. Something like this would be all over the liberal media. Even then, don't always trust what you hear from the news. They warp stories to fit their agendas. I've actually had the local news misreport a story about my friend's car accident about 2 years ago that killed 2 people. They said it was her reckless driving, it was actually an axle from a U-Haul that broke and hit her car, causing her to hit the car with the people who ended up dying in it. Media sucks.

  • ArthurDental

You should go on youtube and find the video of CBS reporters being threatened with arrest by Coast Guards on a boat with BP contractors. The CGs wanted them to leave, saying: “It's BP's rules, not ours.”

  • Dr. Duncan Earle

They were messy enough under our noses on land–at sea, whose gonna make sure they behave? The government? Gve me a break. The whole oil thing is just paying vast piles of cash to suspect governments and their dirty industries. Going green is not a slogan–it is a survival strategy for the century we live in. What will our granschildren's children say of us, if they live through it? “Why didn't they do the obvious right thing, just for a little short term cash, back when you still could?” No more pound foolishness. Pass the climate bill, knock off the deep water drilling.

A boycott will only hurt the workers of the convenience stores/ owners of local stations/ truckers that drive in the supplies to those BP locations. The problem with minds like yours is that they only consider the now. Then doesn't register with that thought pattern you display. Yes it is terrible what is happening. But boycotting will only hurt the families and lives YOU care about. BP needs to be placed on a short leash, but truly this is a fault of this administration's relaxed safety standards. Heck, they awarded BP and that very rig the highest safety award last year. Lets work together to correct the politicians that think it's ok to hurt our waters and shores for the scene of another term. But God sakes man, stop shouting to hear sounds, and focus to cause effect.

I am so ashamed to be British right now, this is just unforgivable behaviour i hope and pray that bp are brought to justice over this and made to pay, we all know they can afford it, greed is their god we have to stop them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Danielle-Gagnon/614442708 Danielle Gagnon

Regardless of whether or not this story is a scare tactic to get more people against BP or not, the truth remains that burnt or not, there is a large number of highly endangered animals being affected by this. The turtles nesting grounds are contaminated and will remain so during the entire nesting season so it's another year lost. The turtles that get contaminated, if found, will require long hours of cleaning and treatment. Not to mention the countless other species that are out there, some we may not have even discovered yet…….so let's all stop throwing childish insults back and forth while we sit all comfy in our homes and maybe help come up with a way to support the people who are trying to do something.

  • Xyster5

Wow. All of this comment off the evidence of a man who never once says he saw turtles burning. He described what was hapeening and says “They would not let us go back in there, and in the mean time how many turtles got caught up and just burned?” He didn't see it and assumes it happened. Maybe, maybe not. Need more than one person assuming it happened to convince me. Like shrimp boat captains, etc. More than one independent businesman is working out there. If it happened, others will come forward. Bashing BP is the popular thing to do now. I'll wihthold judgement until credible evidence is presented. Anything else is just speculation.

  • S. Grimes

When Saddam burned the wells of Kuwait it was called “eco-terrorism.” When BP and its buddies burn oil in the sea (along with defenseless, endangered animals) it is called 'controlled burn' – done, likely, with an eye toward mitigating the disaster but more so for mitigating their true “response-ability” and to aid in cost-cutting for their company.

  • S. Grimes
  • X_-_test@hotmail.com

Xyster5: I hope it's not true, but after some of their other unscrupulous business practices I wouldn't put it past them. I guess we just wait and see if any other evidence surfaces – if they actually did burn the turtles, they should be held liable and fined for each one; since they're an endangered species, even losing a few can have a huge impact on the ecosystem.
Like you said, it's too early to tell, but I'm pretty pessimistic after how they've handled the recent spill.

BP will not have to account for the years it will take for our Gulf Coast to be renewed. They don't care about any life be it sea life or human life. They care about their image and money.

  • Lmherndon68

Ignorance. The turtles breath air. Yes, they can swim “downwards” – however, they have to surface for air. They have no way of knowing whether they will come up smack in the middle of the oil, and once they do, they are done. They die. Do you not understand that?

  • Lmherndon68

The clean up should be done differently. Anyone and everyone that had an idea, or a piece of equipment that could have cleaned up this mess should have been allowed in. Preventative measures should have been put in place to protect the coast immediately on a MUCH LARGER SCANE than what was/has been done. Yes, I understand the need for structure – but so many people want to help and CAN help – and are simply not being allowed to due to bureaucratic bullcrap!

  • Lmherndon68

BP has demonized themselves…they need no help from anyone.

  • willyfree

I thought the same thing. And, the last ime I looked, turtles had the ability to dive. The booms are only five or ten feet into the water

My goodness at the left leaning greenies here. You pass that Climate Bill and you can kiss your standard of living good bye. Why do you think this allowed to continue to happen? The Oil Industry will be nationalized and your cost of gasoline will sky rocket. Then it'll be time to bitch about that. Realize we live in a fascist regime and change that. Things like this will not be allowed to happen if the right people are in charge. There is no left or right anymore. The faster people realize this, the faster the system changes for the better. I'd expect more than one retort from a brainwashed individual on this one.

  • Michellekehm

One is no more important than the other, the ocean, the coasts, the turtles and all other sea life all need to be saved. Although for me a life whether that be a person or animal takes precedence over all else. Having said that, if we have no more coasts or oceans or beaches; then we will have no more sea life. We need both in order for plant and wildlife to continue to thrive. We don't need anymore endangered species lists due to the ruination from man's negligence and ignorance.

All I can say is BP lives up to it's name and that is Big Polluter!!!!!

How is a turtle that lives in the sea supposed to know what fire is? And how hard would it be to allow the rescuers in to get those out before they set it afire? Everything BP has done has been done with much of their effort expended to exclude the public. In fact it seems they’re willing to expend ALL effort to exclude the public until that’s done. What is it they’re trying hide? I keep reading snippets of this being a false-flag op, and THAT’S supposedly why all the secrecy, the lies, and the public, especially anyone who looks like a journalist or has a camera. I’m really starting to wonder. Florida has about the largest population of old folks and disabled living there in the warm on Social Security, SSDI and so on. Probably a HUGE portion of that population qualifies as “useless eaters,” or the old Nazi definition: “Lives unworthy to be lived.” I’m really starting to wonder.

  • IhaveAbrain

So what's your solution? Let the oil continue to spread to the rest of the world? BP did the world wrong, but why should we stand by and do nothing. Burning it keeps it from washing up on shore or traveling around the globe. If you have a better suggestion, I'm sure they are open to it.

  • Tonya_m_cook

Thank you Susan, I agree with you, our planet is more important. Without it, we don't have much.

  • Tonya_m_cook

They can't exactly dive if they get caught in the net, now can they?

  • Joo

If there is no other way to prevent all the oil from going on shore then burning it may be the only option. In order to collect more oil, they have to somehow ‘empty’ the oil they have already collected. Was Captain Ellis close enough to the burn to actually see turtles being burned? I agree that if there were trapped turtles, the rescue should have; by law, been allowed to rescue them before the burn ensued. There is the possibility that some turtles, along with other creatures trapped in the burn area were burned alive. If burning is the only option, how can all the wildlife trapped in that area be saved from being burned alive? It is impossible. However, rescue workers should not be turned away. Allowing time for the rescue of a critically endangered species should not be an option. It should be mandatory. Cutting corners to save time and money is what caused this nightmare in the first place.

**sigh** can't win for losing… To all of you who continue to point blame, what do you really want…. the oil to stop “gushing” or protect the wildlife and your beaches. A controlled burn allows the protection of the beach. It's a no-win, they are damned if they do and damned if they dont…listen to yourselves. First it's the water, then the beaches, then the wildlife. Accidents happen….all they are trying to do (and ALL THEY ARE CAPABLE OF AT THIS POINT) is to minimize the effects. Something has got to give…

I have never forgotten about that. It is still very real to me.

  • S.F.

You really are a moron. The turtles are endangered, and they need to be saved now or not at all. Don't you think we have enough people who can do all of this? There are people out there saving the turtles and the coastlines and everything else. What a damned moron you are. I am amazed at the thoughtless commentary on this page by people like you. Why did you even come to this page if you don't give a damn to begin with. Honestly, we have enough resources to do it all, but with BP standing in the way, it is harder. Quit shouting you fucking moron. Don't you care about the planet. I want my children to inherit a clean and bountiful Earth. GO WORK FOR BP. Join them on their Yacht.

  • Moira

Unfortunately 5 months from now the oil will still be gushing out probably.. so I don't think we'll get a chance to forget about it..

  • LadyGalilea

“what do you really want…. the oil to stop “gushing” or protect the wildlife and your beaches”

My God, you're joking, right? Of COURSE the Gulf waters and beaches need to be protected — but not at the expense of burning sea turtles to death! Whose monstrous idea of “protection” is that? I really don't know how you can begin to compare water and sand to a living, breathing being. Saving the animals and plugging the hole are the top priority. Everything else falls secondary to that. And sure, BP is doing all they can do — to cover their own butt. The only really useful and practical thing they've done thus far is to buy a whole lot of actor/environmentalist Kevin Costner's brilliant machines for separating oil from water. Also, this was more than just an “accident”. It is an unprecedented natural disaster borne of willful and I daresay CRIMINAL negligence on the part of BP. I happen to know the mother of one of the men killed on that rig, and he called the Deepwater Horizon the “well from hell”. Even the rig workers knew it was unsafe! And there are other rigs out there in the Gulf just like it. It's just a matter of time before something like this happens again; you can bet on it. Do not apologise for BP… they deserve every bit of harsh criticism they get.

  • LadyGalilea

Your attitude is a perfect example of why and how we got into this mess: “F**k, the environment, f**k the animals… it's all about US, people”. Yes, we're worried about turtles. Because unlike grains of sand, they are ALIVE and feel pain. And, unlike jobs, they are irreplaceable. One they're gone, they're gone forever. So, I amongst others will continue to bitch about this horrific and inhumane act and heartless bastards like you will have to get used to it. BTW, I hope you choke on your bloody soup!

  • LadyGalilea

Furthermore, it's not just YOUR coast (or YOUR state). MY state of Texas is also on the Gulf Coast, and we've had to deal with those damned balls of tar washing up on our beaches for as far back as I can remember. If you're really interested in saving the beaches, great, then let's start by ending offshore drilling. Permanently. And get serious about coastal wind energy, which is infinitely cleaner AND safer than fossil fuels. Not to mention that the new technology will create… what? That's right: J-O-B-S.

  • Friend of the Sea Turtles

What makes BP the “boss of everyone”? How can they run a rescue boat off and forbid it from coming back? I guess because Captain Ellis was being PAID by BP and so simply followed their instructions to leave or he doesn't get reimbursed for his time? WHY don't we get some of the experienced kick-ass environmental boats down there like GREENPEACE'S Rainbow Warrior — who have outside funding and who's intentions are not muddied by a BP paycheck?

  • LadyGalilea

“People are more important than animals. If you don't believe so, you are messed up morally.”

Oh, right. Because we're the “smartest species” and all that. Sure. We're so special we're bit by bit turning our only home into a cesspool and drowning in it. What other species could be so proud. So, define “important”. By that do you mean… Irresponsible? Arrogant? Narrow-minded? Narcissistic? OK, then, agreed,”people are more important than animals”. You know, I don't judge a living thing, human or otherwise, by their IQ or by how many legs they have. I've seen animals risk or sacrifice their own lives to help a human being or another animal. And I've seen humans kill each other for a pair of shoes, or for no reason at all. And whilst they're are many beautiful things about the human race, there's plenty of “beastliness” to be found as well. So if recognising that animals and our habitat are important — even equally as important as humans — and are worth saving, makes me or Michellekehm “messed up morally” in your opinion, then I say perhaps it is YOU who have a warped sense of morality. And as far as difficult decisions: How about we decide we're getting off the oil, all of it, foreign and domestic, ASAP. Because it's killing us.

Standard of living? You mean the one where we're scooping oil scum off our beaches? Eating tainted seafood? Finding bits of plastic in our drinking water at the molecular level? Increasing incidences of different types of cancer? Is that the standard of living you mean? Happy to kiss that goodbye. In my mind, the price of gasoline is not high enough, but I think we're all (hopefully) beginning to see the true cost. Reluctantly, I do have to agree with your left vs. right comment. I'm feeling rather let down at the lack of spine my elected officials have shown with regards to this and other crucial issues. I'm still waiting for that “big change” we all were promised, but it's starting to look to me like too little too late (or never).

  • LadyGalilea

Nice to see there are those who actually do know the meaning of the word! Props, Lamo and S.F.! :)

    Debra,
There is no reason to be ashamed of being British. All that hogwash about Anti-British sentiment… it really is quite ignorant. BP is British headquartered Company, yes, And Tony Hayward reeks an Aristocratic CEO stench that burns my nostrils over here on the Atlantic Coast. No I am not going to get into all the debate about relaxed regulations and corruption and all that “BS,” anyone with a half a brain knows how that played a huge part in this. The fact of the matter is, BP was in charge of the operation when this tragedy occrued. They are directly responsible. Not the British people. I'd sooner blame every American that has allowed Politicians to stay in bed with these major corporations. IF the well had been run by American headquartered company, I am quite positive they would be receiving the same treatment from the Administration and an outraged American Public. For my part, I am sorry that anyone, especially an American, should make a British citizen feel ashamed for this whole mess. As I read comments all over the web like those of CJ41218 and Azdugan, I want to say I am ashamed to be American. But I will not be deterred by these close minded, selfish people, just as you should not let the actions of one disgusting man and his millionaire cronies allow you to be ashamed of being British.

Others have given plenty good reasons, but also consider, hypothetically, that all the turtles burn up. And in ten years, (hopefully) long after this is all cleared up, people start getting sick with some strange disease never before seen. But, as it turns out, researchers find one strain of DNA that is resistent to this life-threatening disease, and it's found only in this sea turtle which is, unfortunately, extinct.

We have screwed ourselves, haven't we? Whether you feel compassion for the turtles or not, there's a huge benefit to having the largest biodiversity available. Sure this is a made-up example, but even today with all of the big pharmaceutical companies, as much as 70 percent of our drugs are derived from plant sources. If one of those plants that was a source of a cancer treatment suddenly vanished, and someone you cared deeply for were suffering with cancer, you would probably give anything to have that plant back. When it's gone, it's gone. And it's the same for the turtle.

  • Jub

I agree that money alone can't cover all this carnage. When corners are cut resulting in 11 people being killed, restitution to their families is simply not enough. If it is proved that the employees were ordered to act contrary to safety warnings resulting in loss of life, prison terms for those responsible should be in the offing. Also, if critically endangered animals are killed (especially when qualified personnel are present and equipped and endeavoring to do their job in performing the rescues but are not permitted to do so) it is a criminal act that should be punished, not just monetarily but by prison terms for those not allowing the rescues to take place.

  • Cub

What net? Do booms have nets? Anyway, if they get covered in oil and can't take in enough oxygen they won't be able to dive anyway, will they?

  • hypocrisy

And what about the Delta Niger in África?…. Oh! obiously is not the USA, but the 40% of petroleum of this region are imported by the United States. And what about Exxon Mobil or Shell?. At least 40.000 tons of oil per year spilled out at the delta Niger during the last 50 years. I´m so sorry but there are too much hypocrisy.

  • Captmdsmith

Hey People, wake up. how did the Turtle get into the area to start with? Think really hard come on you can do it. It Swam in UNDER WATER it will get out the same way the fires won't burn them up they are NOT as stupid as some of the people with some of these comments.

  • Vinnynow

Here's the deal for stopping the oil gusher. The U.S. Gov't.,that's “US the people”, will force Tony Hayward to put his yacht in the Ridley turtle area where the burning is taking place. Also all BP executives must move themselves and their families to the spill area and collect no wages or salaries like the locals until the oil gusher is stopped. All their wealth should also be placed in the oil slick. Ever wonder why anything involving oil is called “slick”.

“Blow up the well now to cap it.”

  • Wendeve

I hopoe BP forever rot in hell. You rotten greedy swines.

  • Jay

Im all for saving the wildlife, but, realistically, how does anyone plan to stop the TONS of oil pouring out? If they set the fire proof containment booms around the monstrosity to begin with – the mess could have been more or less confined to a “small” area (a far sight smaller than what it is now) and about 85-95 percent of the wildlife that has already died could have probably been saved.
Without knowing how close BP is to actually FIXING the problem, rather than putting a bandaid on severed limb, I feel like this is the lesser (albeit a slight one) of 2 evils.

  • Jay

.. dunno how my post was “in reply to Wendeve”, but its not really – just my 2 cents…
yup, British Petroleum can go rot for all I care.

    http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/06/23/bp-bu…

there you go. Fox posted the story online, but it has no more evidence than the stories here. I'm sure it most likely is happening, but it might be over-exaggerated to create more hype over the story. Why would they over-exaggerate this event? Well because it pisses people off, pissed off people want to be more involved, “involved” people tend to watch the news, and tada! the news that you watch gets higher ratings and makes money!

  • TK

yeah what I find weird is that it's affecting “mostly Kemp's Ridley turtles” If these turtles are the most endangered species of sea turtle, why are they all clustered in one area being affected all at the same time? Last time I checked severely endangered means very rare to see/find…..sooo…..why the sudden appearance?

BP is a horrible company, regardless.

  • Kiyoshi

Endangered just means there aren't many left in the wild. Sometimes that means they're hard to find because they're too spread out, and sometimes it just means they're only left in one place like these turtles seem to be. :(

This is so sad, I don't understand why BP won't let them save as many turtles as possible, especially if they're so endangered.

Forgive me for Sounding like I am supporting these Floating Oil Behemoths, I am not. Merely stating a known Fact. There could be any number of reasons for ther apperance such as Migration? Possibly following Krill, you know plankton, that other fish feed on and thus these turtles. Natural fish food? Can we say DUH?

It's not all or nothing. Did you read the article? All the rescue boats were asking was to be let through to pick up the turtles before the burn started. At the rate things have been going downhill, I can't imagine waiting another day or two would make much difference to the burn results.

  • natalie

BP and the obama administration do not want to stop the oil flow. This is all a part of the sytematic destruction of America. First, a muslim in the White House, Second, “healthcare”, Third-israel and our deteriorating relationship, now they are attacking our food sources. Granted not everyone eats seafood on a daily basis, but the fishing industry and those that depend on that industry are on their way to RUIN. Oh there is a change coming alright. Those morons who thought the first “MUSLIM black president” cared for them and their plight are now waking up to the reality of the situation. DESTROY AMERICA. Thats why he was put in office, the muslim, does not care for black, whites, greeks italians HE SERVES THE ELITE not the people.

  • natalie

becasue the feds are in on it that's why. If they really wanted to stop this oil, they could and they would, but they do not want to. Do we as a people really think that we have the capacity to dream up and manifest all of the technological advances, (oil rig, drilling thousand of feet into the ocean), but we were shortsighted in having a to put into effect if there was an oil spill. This administration if for the SHEEPLE not the PEOPLE

  • Sue

Let's leave bigotry out of it.

  • dmw

maybe if they would have taken all of the safety measures in order to prevent this problem, it wouldn't have been so bad. if they would have followed the rules and not cut corners in the construction of that well just to save themselves some money, it would have been easier to get under control – or not have happened in the first place. the situation has spun this far out of control, but i certainly DON'T agree that they are “doing everything they can” … i think they're doing “everything they are willing to pay for”… and not a cent more. it's all about the $$$$$$$$$$. that is it.

  • Gitrdunmom

You contradict yourself…”unprecedented natural disaster borne of willful and I daresay CRIMINAL negligence”…A natural disaster can not be created by man…natural disasters are hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards….not oil gushing out of a hole in the ocean floor that was put there by men…

We will be dealing with this for a long time to come.

Obama isn't Muslim, you blithering idiot.

  • Ccretu

The captain interviewed said they were pulling mostly one year juveniles from the sea grass. When sea turtles hatch on shore, they make their way into the water and then feed and grow in off-shore floating beds of sea grass (where there is abundant food for them, and they are protected by the grass from predators) until they are large enough to make it on their own out in the ocean. That's why they are finding them “clustered.” When the shrimp boats use sea grass to help trap an oil slick inside the booms, they are automatically enclosing the juvenile turtles in their natural “nursery.” Sea turtles are endangered because it takes so many years for them to mature until they can reproduce, and an extremely high percentage of them die before reaching that age.

Rough estimates for Sea Turtles to make it to adulthood, are 1 in 100, and for Kemps Ridley, this number may be even lower. In the Mexican-Gulf area, Kemps Ridleys are known for their beautiful shell and have been used for centuries to make jewelry and other items from it. Also, sea turtle eggs are considered a delicacy, and this is still a problem for us on our Florida beaches, where Loggerhead Sea Turtles are most common.

Please read Ccretu's post, because the information about the habitat in the wild is accurate. Sea Turtles return to the beach that they hatched at to lay eggs, somehow the species is able to navigate its way back to the same beach!

  • Debbie's Daughter

I left off some zeros in my above post… 1 in 10,000 sea turtles will live to reach reproductive maturity

Because what BP did (or didn't do) isn't against the law. When Goldman Sachs and Chase and Citigroup trashed and continue to trash our economy, that's not against the law either.

I'm trying to figure out why you think President Obama is a Muslim? He is not. Healthcare? he should be applauded for getting what he could get passed, even though the Republicans butchered the bill. Sounds like to me that you are a typical Republican and claiming to be concerned about the environment, when you know you could care less. Republicans want to destroy the world, most are mainstream Christians or claim to be, and think that the world will end soon anyway so they think “what the hell”, the world will end soon so we might as well speed it up. You sound like ONE of those typical narrow minded idiot republicans. Israel? what makes you think he's deteriorating relations with them? He serves the Elite? I guess that's why he turned down an offer with a prestigious law firm making over a $1,000,000 a year after finishing law school, so he could go work in the south side of Chicago making around $30,000 a year instead. You need to check facts before posting Jackass comments like the one above. Yet another idiot in America, Oh and by the way, I'm a 39 year old white male, and yes I voted for Obama. So I guess that makes ME a moron. I guess you voted for McCain or did you vote? If not you need to keep your opinion to yourself, If you didn't vote you have no right to bitch. This is BP's doing not the Presidents, People need to stop blaming him for this mess, I don't think he was the one out there drilling holes in the planet and making her bleed.

At what point is this going to stop? At what point will we realize that this is NOT just the administrations fault… Do you drive? Do you buy plastics? Do you use ANY type of petroleum product? If so then YOU are part of the problem. STOP consuming products that use oil in their production. STOP being part of the problem and become part of the solution – and stop blaming the president and let's put the blame where it belongs – Inspectors, BP, and GREED.

Lady. First off, I'm glad you can see there is no difference in our elected corporation officers. Secondly though, until we can get a good alternative for oil, we're stuck with it at the moment. Oil is the only thing we have right now. IF you want to pay giant prices for everything produced then let this Crap and Slave Bill go through. People do not realize the impact of a forty percent hike in everything. You're right, Lady. We do need something different. Passing this bill would cripple our economy to the point where there will be violence in the streets. The corporation continues to take more. I agree with your point of having alternative energy, but not at the hand of corrupt “officials” and aggressive tactics. They're taking everything we own. Did you know that the actual meaning of federal government is actually contract corporation? Yup, it's true. I didn't believe it either. It's all a business to them and we're being led around like sheep.

  • chop98

I understand, natalie. A lot of these people that have commented are completely clueless and don't manage to get information from outside the U.S. They're about as blind as the three mice. BO is 50% White. BO is 42% Arab. BO is 8% Black. His father was devout Muslim and British in citizenry. Both his parents were not American. He partook in the local underground to bring down the government. He does only serve the elite which is apparent. As to those that say he shut down this or that? BP was his biggest contributor during campaigning. PEOPLE! open your eyes. This man is not what he seems. A little digging under the surface will show you how all of this is staged for pass of Crap and Slave. Don't believe me? Larry Schweiger, the CEO of the NWF himself, said this was staged to bring about going green. You are being lied to from every side of this government.

  • chop98

I'm fully aware of what happens. It will be one of those situations like WW2 if nobody speaks out. I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees like a common slave. This country runs directly head-on into tyranny, MrsShuck. Will we stand idly by while this administration does the dirty deed of turning us into a Communist State? Far too many people are either sleeping their day away or are unaware that neither the right nor the left side of politics is for their benefit. Politicians = self-promoter. What we need is a Statesman. ( = for the people) Business is for the better, but not at the expense of millions dying in the process. The NWO and it's crony military ( US! and yes I'm an American) will see to it that this happens as is evident by them moving eleven warships through the Suez Canal this past weekend. They're staging for war, MrsShuck. Regardless of what side or school of thought you represent, war will not benefit either of us. Look for the diversion as the real deal takes place beneath our noses. Be not sidetracked by what mainstream media pushes at you each night. They are bought out and as corrupt as this administration (and the entire UN for that matter) and they will not stop until they own us all. Research Agenda 21. Look at the similarities as the defined border for mass evacuation due to this oil spill. Ulterior motives are abound.

Some disturbing comments. It's no wonder America is in the position it is in when people like Natalie are the ones voting. From day one Obama was trying to spark interest in green energy. Even now the Republicans are saying he shouldn't be talking about it. When is a good time if not now? Most people in America want change but they are too lazy to do it. We are the ones using the oil. Do what you can to stop consuming it. There is plenty we can all do. Little changes make a big difference on a large scale. Start now. Stop using plastic bags. Use cloth diapers. Write letters to the Obama administration demanding research into alternatives. WE can develop clean energy systems to sell to other countries and employ people doing something positive for the environment. Or we can keep destroying the earth and funding other countries (including some terrorists) because we're too lazy to change. This is our generations time to fight for something. I hope this spill wakes us up.

The question is not Obama or Bush. It's our way of life, which depend on oil. Humans are destroying nature and wildlife, this is the point. Oil, plastic bags and trash are destroying the sea, not only in America. BP is doing worse, they don't allow rescue team to save turtles, they don't know how to stop the spill, this is a terrible disaster, and we know only a little part of this.

  • Leinar

It's time for action! I'm trying to use bicycle or motorcicle instead of my car, I'm recycling paper and plastic in office and at home… trying to stop pollution! So encouraging to see the efforts to try and save these turtles. I hope many can be saved. Well done on the (continuing) effort.
In my own home country (Australia), endangered turtles are dismembered whilst still alive on a daily basis, their meat ends up on the black market. It always makes me so angry when people say “One person can't make a difference.” Do you know how many “one person's” I've heard say that?! They need to wake up and smell the roses before our planet is too polluted to grow them anymore!

I am SICK AT HEART to know that baby 1 year old sea turtles are dieing in this disaster. BP is the criminal. Every board member of this corporation should be held accountable but I know they will not be doing anything except sadly looking at a declining profit statement in their stock portfolios. Our corporate welfare form of democracy needs to be revealed for the inhumane treatment of all living things by corporations. The big question is how do those of us who can articulate the problems reach out to create the 51% we need to affect real change?
Can we use the internet wisely and judiciously and address this environmental disaster and not be overcome with personalities of the people who post? Corporate Greed versus the Environment: since 1970 I have been talking and working to enlighten any who would listen, 40 years. Is this disaster the tipping point? Can we make it the “thing” that starts change?

This keeps getting worse. We need, as a people, to demand that safety policies and environmental controls be set up and enforced. This is the result of passivity on the part of many people.

  • chop98

Paranoid enough to research on goings on and the people involved in it. You should do the same. It was last said that 66% of people were very wary of the mainstream media. Are you part of that percentage? Have you bothered to look at any of the coincidence involved in this oil spill? If not, you should? The government ultimately allowd the capping of this oil burst to not be put in place. Ever wonder why? Was it to save the “trees”? Or might it be that Cap and Trade is in the works? You'll see your life come to a standstill if this passes. Look beyond what mainstream is told and you'll start getting facts. Continue to make fun of people such as myself. It's ok, man. Us “paranoid schizophrenic” types are all to aware that we'll be made fun of. Until then, keep your head in the sand. Should you ever take it out…be careful. The world is out there.

I agree wholeheartedly with 'Brinkofsanity'. The oil contamination of the gulf has pushed us closer to the brink of extinction! I despise the corporations that own and operate our country. They have carte blanc to do with us and our planet as they please. They are sociopaths that are motivated by greed alone! And, you and I are 'consumers' period! We do not have a name of a face we are only potential buyers for whatever the hell they are selling! Yes, it is true! Our country is owned and operated by the megacompanies that ram prescriptions down our throats, manufacture the poisons that kill us and keep us stupid by feeding us lies via internet, newspapers and television…and we get to pay for the propaganda too! I voted for Obama and realize now that it does not matter who is in office…the president is a powerless figurehead that is a puppet on a string for the mega giants that tell him what to do and when to do it! WAKE UP AMERICANS! THE NEW WORLD ORDER IS HERE! 4GET DEMOCRACY! THAT IS A THING OF THE PAST!

What a ridiculous thing to write. BP should be expropriated. Adopt a vegan diet all you like, but we must organize and not around some narrow nationalist program (like Gandhi's), but on the basis of the unity of the international working class- that is the bulk of humanity. Capitalism is killing us and everything else. Meditation won't stop it.

  • Yoginimae

You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine, it is hardly a ridiculous thing to write, direct your anger and energy in the correct way, that's all I am saying. Blessings.

Dude. I'm sorry that you are seeing a pattern where there is no pattern.

People have been doing it for a long time. Seeing patterns has helped us survive as a species. Unfortunately, some people can't deal with chaos or just plain human cluster-f****s, so they see patterns everywhere. A subset of those people see those patterns as angels and signs from the gods, another set sees the controlling hand of Kings and other shadowy figures that control their lives.

It's okay. I went there after 9-11 because I couldn't deal with the reality of it. I thought that Bush was going to turn the country into a theocracy, dude. Then I got a grip. I still didn't like the religious right, but I didn't think that we were going to be turned into a theocracy any time soon. Any more than we are even *close* to becoming a communist country. (Are you kidding? Anyone who remembers the USSR is busting a gut laughing about that.)

I'm not going to argue with you about it, but you really should take a hard, logical look at yourself and what you really need and want in life. If this stuff is fun for you, have at it. If it makes you distraught, you might want to get some help.

  • chop98

Dude? This coming from a female? You're obviously a young female or a female trying to impersonate a man. Just remember! You may act like a man, but you'll never be a gentleman. The things you write above lead me to believe that you're confused about the fact that this government is acting on your behalf. Why have they not stopped the spill yet, Mrs? Can you give me one good reason? Other than the fact that they're throwing technical jargon at you that none of us understand. I think it's better than you did go back to sleep after 9/11. We've all seen that it was an inside job at this point. And if you can't see or handle that…you should just sleep through the rest of America being taken over.

Right on, perfer1 – wild creatures instinctively know that fire is bad and they get away, and turtles are no exception. They can swim long distances under water. Some of the comments below are truly astounding in their abject naivete and their writer’s willingness to believe politically-motivated “the sky is falling” stories.

  • prefer1

Morons – the “corral” is less than 2 feet deep. It has no bottom. Nothing is trapped inside. Turtles or anything else simply swim a little lower and out of the area. No living creature is going to surface in an area that is on fire and all can swim well away from the burn area – assuming they haven't already been scared away by the dragging boom. Wake up and smell the hydrocarbons…

You are aware that they could do this if they weren't too drenched in the oil to free themselves. Wake up and smell the petro.

WEAK STORY…. Look we want the accident fixed…BP IS ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY!!!!
But it seems like we AMERICANS love to wallow around in a “victimized” state. First all… the protester with their hastily made signs..yelling and screaming about “BIG oil companies… then they get back in their SUV's and go home. RIDE A BIKE!!!!…don't increase the demand and use a product that you standing up and protesting against. Then we want to complain that BP's CEO Tony Hayward was out on a yacht enjoying himself the other weekend…while the “oil is still gushing”… wake up people…he's not the one doing the manual labor…HE'S THE CEO… BP has other employees working on this 24/7!!!! NOW it's burning sea turtles alive…..GET REAL EVERYBODY! and as far as the BP people in this video asking the man to leave while he is trying to rescue turtles…… I can just imagine what we would be saying about BP if he got injured while he was there. IF you care so much….stop complaining and get involve in helping.

Finally, someone else who has seen presidency for what it truly is, a useless title. The “leader of the free world” is merely a figurehead.

  • gennai

Yes, but think on this. . . If BP had done what it was supposed to do this “accident” as it has been referred to by BP, could have been managed and/or avoided at best. Question: Do you know why this disaster (as I call it), happened? Think about and then do something to prevent it from happening again.

The Dred Scott decision held that persons were property. Citizens United holds that property is a person. Kafka would be jealous!

  • 1moreturtlewoman

The turtles, most likely the size of a salad plate, are coated in oil, under stress, stuck on a floating sea grass mat, gathered up by booms, that is soaked in oil that BP is burning. The turtles that were stuck in the boomed area could not swim away, They are effectively disabled. That is why the boats were picking them up. Animals that could, would swim away would but this video is talking about the ones that could not.

  • http://twitter.com/MsDebbiePelt Debbie Pelt

Of course wild creatures will stay away from fire but sea turtles are not incredilby fast and fire on the water is not something wild creatures have been instinctualy prepared for.

  • mariet27

I am actually involved. I work as a volunteer for sea turtle patrol every year. I have recently registered and got my biohazard certification to assist in the rescue of wildlife affected by the oil spill. In addition I have my degree in wildlife ecology and conservation from the University of Florida and I am employed by a NGO for endangered species conservation. I realize that there are risks involved in responding to this oil spill and I will accept personal responsibility for my safety however your comment that this is a “weak” story somehow says that these species/issues of wildlife are unimportant to you. I am sure that you take out your recycling on trash day to save face with your neighbors and look ecologically responsible however what are you doing to make a difference? Don't downplay these issues because they don't directly impact you. Maybe if people like you showed more consideration for the environment and joined the protest companies would be more socially responsible. I may drive a car but I also ride a bike…what have you done lately?

By what you said, you are not one of the “people” I was referring to obliviously.
Listen… This to me is not really a issue about sea turtles…it only pretends to be.
I received an email from Moveon .org…..(which I am a member of)…that stated BP BURNING SEA TURTLES ALIVE.
Here's my issue… APRIL 20th: BP had a tragic accident on their facility Deepwater Horizon, 11 people died…17 others injured. I do understand there is some questions about BP being aware at the time that certain maintenance issues were being reported as faulty…and they DID NOT expedite the repairs quick enough… and as a result, people lost their lives, sea live has been put in jeopardy, our coastal environment is suffering and some people are now going thorough a financial hardship all as a direct effect from BP's actions…or lack of action that could of prevented this.
I DON'T think people are aware of the facts here.

APRIL 23rd: The Netherlands offered to donate the use of ships equipped to handle very large scale spills. They also offered to prepare a contingency plan to protect Louisiana marshlands with sand barriers and a Dutch research institute developed a strategy to begin building 60-mile-long dikes within three weeks. The U.S. government responded to the Dutch offer with “Thanks for your help, but at the moment we can manage ourselves”, despite BP's desire to bring in the Dutch equipment.

MAY 6th: The United Nations and fourteen countries had offered assistance. The U.S. government declined the offers, with a State Department email to reporters stating “There is no need right now that the U.S. cannot meet.” The countries offering help were Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

JUNE 21st: Iran's Revolutionary Guards offered assistance to contain the oil spill. That same day, U.S. had received 21 aid offers from 17 countries and four international groups. Our response ~>”We are maintaining contact with these countries, we are grateful for the offers, and we will take them up on these offers.” On June 19, the Coast Guard actively requested skimming boats and equipment from the Netherlands, Norway, France, and Spain. By June 25, the U.S. State Department listed 70 assistance offers from 23 countries, and indicated that 8 had been accepted. On June 29 the State Department accepted 22 offers of assistance from 12 countries and international bodies, including two high speed skimmers and fire containment boom from Japan.

A month after the French foreign minister volunteered a fleet of private oil skimming boats, the owner met with BP and Coast Guard officials to present the idea. Weeks later, in late June, a private contractor in Florida purchased 9 of them.

Now I see a story on the news about a big Skimmer …NO MENTION OF WHERE IT CAME FROM arriving to help TWO MONTHS LATER!!!!!!!

So the fact is…while BP was trying to figure out HOW TO PLUG THE HOLE…we (US) were turning down help…and saying…WE WILL MAKE THEM PAY…it just doesn't seem right to me.

BP executives agreed to create a $20 BILLION spill response fund. This does not include what they will pay for in fines…this is in additional. They have taken responsibility, they are involved…even though progress is slow as far as seeing these result…this is a big issue…and MANY MANY people are trying to profit off of it. I don't see the need for a “Food Kitchen”..to aid the “victims” of the spill..BUT BP did it anyway….. good pr move I guess.

Bottom line….BP was neglectful…..accident happened..11 people died…help was turned away…the news media shows a underwater cam of the oil STILL gushing….local people calling for CRIMINAL prosecution of BP…WHICH IS INSANE!!!!!!!!! BP pays/is paying and we look like international fools to the rest of the world for not handling this properly by turning away help for two months and getting all we can out of playing the VICTIM CARD….ohh…and I forgot….some sea turtles have been injured….

  • MrsB2009

BP needs to be shut down, permanently and fined $1,000 per turtle affected. This is a classic example of a greedy corporation that made no backup plans for just such a horrific event. I seriously doubt that BP didn't have computers that tracked every single inch of that freaking pipeline so that if any malfunctions started to come about, the system wouldn't warn them of such a catastrophe. For a company making $66 billion dollars per day, that is highly irresponsible. They knew when the pipeline was developing fissures or cracks and decided to just sit back and let whatever happen, happen, imho. Greed at it's most obvious conclusion.

  • doriekp

BP's making $66 billion dollars a day??????? Where are you getting your figures from???
TOTALLY INCORRECT…. go to a reliable source and check your facts.
Maybe you need to start off by looking up their annual Financial and Operating Information filings for 2005-2009. That will show you how far off you are from the truth…*Keep in mind these are LEGAL reports and filings.. and forget about all of the expenses and figuring out their “profit”….just look at income alone.

Julee…thank you. It is good to know that there are many more out there awake to these facts. You should visit FreedomizerRadio should you have the spare time. I don't know if these people will allow this post for putting that in, but it's worth a shot. Thank you again, Julee. Let's hope we can get all this information out and about before it's too late.
