China has the power to shut down its Internet, so why can’t we?

That’s one of the arguments Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) is making about the bill he’s co-authored that would give the president the power to disable parts of the Internet as he deems necessary.

“Right now China, the government, can disconnect parts of its Internet in case of war and we need to have that here too,” Lieberman told CNN’s Candy Crowley on State of the Union Sunday.

“There’s a lot of people out there who think that what you are granting the president is absolute power to shut down freedom of speech, that this is just over the top,” Crowley said.

“No way and total misinformation,” Lieberman replied. “We need this capacity in a time of war. We need the capacity for the president to say, ‘Internet service provider, we’ve got to disconnect the American Internet from all traffic coming in from another foreign country, or we have to put a patch on this part of it’.”

Lieberman continued: “So I say to my friends on the Internet, relax. Take a look at the bill. And this is something that we need to protect our country.”

Lieberman, along with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), introduced the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act two weeks ago. The bill would allow the President to disconnect Internet networks and force private websites to comply with broad cybersecurity measures. The president’s power to shut down parts of the Web would be renewed indefinitely under the bill.

This video is from CNN’s State of the Union, broadcast June 20, 2010.

Because it's good for China it's good for the US?

A tacit admission that the US is no longer a democratic republic.

  • Democratic Socialism NOW!!!

I DESPISE this traitorous bastard! Connecticut…WAKE THE FUCK UP and resign this prick next election!!! (That is IF your election isn't fixed!)

First they get us into a continuing state of war, then they try to create new powers only to be used in a time of war, which now is apparently constant. Geroge Orwell would be proud. And repulsed.

I am not your “internet friend” you zionist puke.

Joe, Joe, Joe you hypocritical son of a bitch!!! Who in their right mind would believe anything you ever say again… They didn't name you “Liarman” because you told the truth… You know Joe, integrity, respect, and believability are like money in the bank, first you have to earn it, then deposit it and then use it wisely… You, Joe, are bankrupt…. Kaput, Woti, Finished, Pau…. You have none left. You have hung yourself out to dry by sucking up to your Zionist masters, you know those Fascist dog shit sons of bitches that are running Israel.. The same bastards that ambushed the USS Liberty and killed and maimed my brothers.. You know, the same ones that haven't recieved an apology from you or those like you in government today. Both the government of the United States and the government of Israel…

Just what we need is another Repig's belief that total government control is better…. Fuck you Joe! Crawl back under the cow pie you crawled out from….

No Joe, you're dogshit, I have a very difficult time of scrubbing your memory out of my mind, it is that distasteful…

Just this old Chief's 2 cents

This is a real bona fide MF.

How in the hell is he still chairman of the Homeland Services Committee?

  • http://mah.smugmug.com Maheanuu

Probably because he is a Charter Member of Aipac…. The Zionists lobby in the United States.

I personally would like to see open season declared on these mofo's, They are in the same league as the Fascists of Mussolini, and not very far behind the Brown Shirts of Hitler….

  • Old Sod

Lieberman needs to “relax” about Iran getting the bomb as it will likely be years until the opportunity presents itself of using it on Israel.

  • NadePaulKuciGravMcKi

    Just trust Joe Lieberman.
    trust in the police state
    trust the 9/11 lies

    trust AIPAC
    trust Israel

  • http://heartlessriot.com/blog/ Loli

No, Joe. Kill the bill and stop being a fascist. You can take your GOP friends that are helping you out on this and drown in the gulf.

  • Janisjop

Send Joe to China. Strip him of all of his “uppity rights” and let him feel like a ” small man”.

  • Neoconhater

This isn't China,so calm down Joe.

  • me

There he goes again .. Lieberman the snake …. Do you believe him ? …

  • Doc Holiday

Screw absolute power and dictatorial controls.

US politicians have turned into communists, so deport them or try them for trfeason

  • Harlowe Thrombey

Lieberman's not worried. He saw no problem when Bush was president, either. He thought Bush was a great chief.

    Joe Lieberman: Go fnck yourself.
Hadassah Lieberman: You go fnck yourself, too.

Democrats who were fooled into supported Lieberman so many years ago: You all go fnck yourselves, as well.

  • Satan

Lieberman continued: “So I say to my friends on the Internet, relax. Take a look at the bill. And this is something that we need to protect our country.” – Joe's only friends are in power.

Like I said before, I can't wait to watch fuckface Obama sign this piece of shit.

BTW, Are they going to disconnect everyones phones too? Obama and Joe can go fuck themselves, Al Qaeda is less of a threat to America than these fucking scums.

  • http://biscuits007.wordpress.com/ protobone

So I say to Joe Lieberman, blow it out your ass! Smarmy festering puke lickspittle. Considering the craven warmongering nature of 'killer' Joe, if his lips are moving, the nasty little freak is lying.

  • wiseturtle

    Fuck that traitorous zionist bastard!

  • Healtheenut

The only thing we need to protect our country is to have fewer fascist politicians like Lieberman.

  • Bobmagi

The media is Zionist controlled, so Holy Joe just needs to stop the truth from passed via the internet. BTW, will Jewess Kagan tilt the Supreme Court to call this hate speech and then censor it?

  • sparkey

Look at the first three letters of his last name and know that he is also a closet republican and you will know that he is never telling the truth anytime he opens his mouth.

  • Debrae

So, okay, then if a bank is under attack, then perhaps steps need to be taken to protect a bank's capacity to engage in transactions without being attacked by a foreign or other source. Exactly how does this relate to civilians using the Internet, to the “flow” of everyday information on the Internet?

We're attacked, so we can't get the NYT? We're attacked, so we can't post blogs? What's really in the bill?

  • http://twitter.com/E_Joyce E_Joyce

This is dangerous as a bill and given how broken the Senate and government is, I wouldn't trust this.

  • gypski

Give us one valid reason to believe a word you say Joe. Sorry, but I can't think of any. You have a habit and pattern of lying through your teeth.

  • indi_progressive

One of the most abusive, terroristic, brutal, horrific dictatorships in the world, responsible for literally millions of human rights abuses, held up constantly as the antithesis to American Freedom and liberty, and Lieberman wants America to be more like them?????????????

  • pist

  • Macilrae

There is not a shadow of doubt in my mind as to Leiberman's agenda here – he wants to protect his beloved country from criticism so that it can continue to do as it has always done and anybody who, by his definition, posts anything anti-Semitic, will be simply censored out. Vote Lieberman and if you are Israeli, he will represent you!

  • Druthers

There should be some kind of communication network set up ,like the poney express, from person to person, so that is case the loonies call for action it would be possible to get news and messages from one part of the country to another and from one neighborhood to another.
City to city. If they have this power, they will use it!

  • Druthers

Waiting for this dreadful little man's demise we can all play Louis Armstrong's great, “I'll Be Glad When Your're Dead You Rascal You!”

  • w00t

Because there is no real difference between the two. China is only slightly worse. And I don't see China mass invading countries for oil and other natural resources (yet).

  • w00t

Bitterly comical is how Lieberman reveals that he, like all fascist swine politicians who introduce and/or ratify totalitarian legislation, knows JACK SHIT about IT. All he cares about is “controlling” what he does not understand. Nanny Neo-Nazis like Lieberman see threats everywhere, just like the government of Iran and China.

What does epic moron Lieberman say about the internet?

“…..or we have to put a patch on this part of it.”

News flash: you cannot “patch” the fucking internet, you drooling imbecile. Jesus Christ, somebody take the safety labels off all of Joe's household appliances so this problem can resolve itself.

The internet is not “American”. The internet cannot be “shut off”. This is complete fucking bullshit and more fascist lunacy from brownshirt Lieberman. When China launches a massive DDOS attack on US military servers or whatver, do you know what the IXP's are going to do? They're going to warn the Chinese ISP's responsible once, and then they're going to throttle or block the attack selectively, expanding the block if it doesn't cease.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR THIS SUPER RETARDED, FASCIST NANNY BULLSHIT.

F*** You, Lieberman, you paternalistic, Orwellian assclown.

  • rsb1

Mr. Lieberman, I'll relax about internet censorship the day you relax about: (1) peaceful nuclear proliferation in the Middle-east; (2) Israel signing the nuclear non-proliferation treaty; and (3) Israel joining IAEA and disclosing the extent of the current nuclear arsenal and allowing IAEA inspections of their facilities. Oh, by the way – FREE VANUNU

  • Dudley Do Wright

I think Lieberman should move to China. They might like him better there! He seems to think their politics regarding civil liberties are appropriate.

  • Jhoffa_

    Lieberman is a douchebag..

His endorsement is all I need to hear..

    Now I KNOW it's a tyrannical move.

  • bahb

    Weasel. Or is that weisel?

  • crashchloride

    Shut up Joe!

China controls their internet access so that they can control the information that their people can get which then helps them control the people.

There are much better ways to fight cyber terrorism/war. One way would be for the government to put some stimulus money into boosting the infrastructure of the internet as well as research into cyber defense and the side benefit would be the creation of a lot of jobs that actually pay a living wage.

  • reyrey

    You're exactly right.

To think that Al Gore, who I love, picked this wrinkled up prune faced fucker to be his running mate just gives me the willies.

That's the only good possible justification I can resolve in my mind that the election was stolen by the Supreme Court.

The first casualty of war is Truth. Go ahead, take my internet, I don't need to know anything. Everyone will agree with Lieberman, he's a democrat AND a republican. Make decisions for me Joe. Pull the kill switch on my brain and I will relax. Especially in a time of WAR. When can we expect this, next week?

  • Brian

I have to agree that this is an attack on free speech in many ways. If you have the ability to shut any part of the internet down then you have the ability to shut it all down. If they are strictly using the “Kill Switch” to be able to disconnect certain parts of the internet down then we do not need a cross the board switch we simply need to shore up the defense of those areas he mentions like power grids and such. If they have the ability to shut down the entire internet then it is just a matter of time before that use it for censorship of those that oppose them. Yeah that's right Joe. Just like China.

  • KatWillow

Ask yourselves: how would this capability benefit Israel?

Actually, I don't think its possible to shut down the internet without shutting down ALL telecommunications: TV, Radio, Phones, Satellite, military, commercial, private is all interconnected and heavily redundant.

Still, constant vigilance is needed. One thing of many that Liberals & Conservatives have in common is alarm at the steady infringement on American's rights.

  • KatWillow

Banks use encryption for their transmissions. If they don't they deserve to be hacked.

Granted, most encryption in the US is deliberately flawed, and the Government (NSA) has all the keys. Ditto Europe.

No Government wants a good encryption program out there.

  • KatWillow

People in power will try to convince Americans that China is gaining power BECAUSE of its agressive, repressive, invasive and stifling behaviors.

More likely it is because the American Gov is mostly corrupt and useless. The field is open and smooth for China to take control of the worlds finance and commerce.

The financial elite have learned a lesson in the last decade just as they learned a lesson about common men able to awaken and move the masses. They have discovered time an again the power of the internet and its revolution of information. Ever since they let that genie out of the bottle they have been trying to put it back in. They have been seeking anyway possible to put the breaks on the information revolution because simply it is exactly that a revolution of independent media sources disseminating the truth which is bad for the Corporate controlled state of america cant have the plebes running around informed have to put the peasents back in their places.

  • çybin

Does Lieberman even realize the damage to businesses large and small, and in down-turn the economy that would be caused by such a shutdown? Clearly this has not been thought through enough at all.

However, (devil's advocate here) it's one thing for the Preident to have this ability, and quite another for him to actually use it.

  • AgileCyborg

What a belligerent piece of garbage.

  • çybin

I meant to type “and the resulting down-turn in the economy”. :)

  • censeo

The grandstand bozo is reaching for new depths. DARPA created the internet nearly thirty years before anyone outside heard the term. Granted, Defense does not control the switches for the commercial web. However, this nation was made aware of national intelligence agencies' screening of web traffic yielded by the telecomms. Lieberman knows well enough what black boxes follow the president around. There is no need to broadcast to the world that we have circuit breakers. Mine is not a paean for secrecy: still, the game of international security is not played with an open hand. Hang this man on the wall in the circus museum in Sarasota.

    Absolutely, its called AIPAC!

  • indi_progressive

“The very fact it's HIM trying to sell us this shit is really making me wonder if there really isn't a sinister zionist agenda undermining our country…..”

yes there is its called AIPAC.

A US court has formally dropped espionage charges against two pro-Israeli lobbyists amid a scandal that had threatened to expose the extent of Israeli grip on US politics.

US District Judge T. S. Ellis on Monday dismissed all charges against former AIPAC lobbyists Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman, three days after Justice Department prosecutors announced that handling the case would require the release of top secret military intelligence and should therefore be shelved.

Rosen and Weissman were indicted in 2005 for conspiring to obtain and leak classified information regarding Iran to the Israeli government and journalists from The Washington Post and other media outlets.

Pentagon expert Larry Franklin — who pled guilty to passing restricted military intelligence to the two indicted lobbyists — was sentenced in April to 12 years and seven months in prison.

AIPAC, billed as the most powerful lobbying group in Washington, has strived to distance itself from the spy case to escape further controversy for the sake of its reputation.

The controversy, however, was further fueled by revelations of the involvement of California representative Jane Harman — a longtime member of the US House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence who has access to highly classified security information.

Harman was reportedly overheard on a wiretapped phone conversation while agreeing to act on behalf of a suspected Israeli agent and persuade the Justice Department into reducing espionage charges against Rosen and Weissman.

The Israeli agent, in return, promised to smooth the way for Harman to become the next chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

According to a Congressional Quarterly report released on April 19, the FBI was poised to question Harman about the telephone call and her interactions with the suspected Israeli agent but US Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez blocked efforts to launch an investigation.

Harman, who has denied any wrongdoing, has taken the matter up with AIPAC policymakers and has tried to turn the tables by accusing the US government of illegally recording her conversation — a move that has shifted media attention away from AIPAC involvement in the spy case, also named the Lawrence Franklin affair.

In an address to the 2009 AIPAC policy conference on Monday, she chose to focus on the wiretapping rather than her bargaining deals with the suspected Israeli spy and called herself “a warrior on behalf of our Constitution and against abuse of power.”

She went on to promise the heavyweight American politicians who had come to swear allegiance to Israel that she would “not quit on this, until I am absolutely sure that this never can happen to anyone else”.

Baruch Weiss, the lawyer who helped cripple the US government's case against Rosen and Weissman, says the prosecution's loss is a “great victory” for Israel's friends.

This is not the first time pro-Israeli lobbyists charged with espionage escape trial in the US.

Stephen D. Bryen, a pro-Israel activist who played a key role in forging close ties between Israel and the Pentagon, was seen passing confidential documents to an Israeli Mossad agent in a restaurant in Washington.

Michael Saba, former executive director of the influential National Association of Arab Americans, who was witness to the security breach, promptly reported the incident to the Justice Department.

“After I reported this incident to the Justice Department, FBI and Justice Department investigators gathered sufficient evidence on Dr. Bryen's activities to recommend he be brought before an investigative grand jury for espionage,” Saba explained in Armageddon Network

“The case was quietly closed, however, by Philip Heymann, the assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, a close personal friend and associate of Dr. Bryen's attorney. Bryen was never formally charged or made to account for his actions under oath,” he added.

Do you think that the government could, in any way, totally shut down traffic from a specific country? They are not geeky, smart enough to understand that they can't do it. Fucking politicians don't event know what the internet is (tubes!). Rat bastards. Keep your hands off of the internet. They've been trying to control it since its inception.

  • LeftsideTampa

Tanks on Tien Min Square. That is all I have to say.

  • phijef

No reason to call names here. Yes, Joe is a fuckwad, but let's not resort to alienating all jews because of him.

  • phijef

Just what exactly is our government securing us from? I ask you this. When will they decide that we can't see videos from our enemies because of national security? I hate the bastards from Al Qaeda and other right wing groups from the MIddle East, but I should have the ability to listen to their crazy ramblings. What other things will the government deem “harmful” to the American psyche. I say no. The internet is not to be controlled.

  • Talk1370

Shall we begin with, say, the website of the junior Senator from Connecticut?

Seriously, why do some authoritarian politicians feel the need to make us more like the countries we claim to oppose? What's the point of calling yourselves a free people if you start acting like an authoritarian corporate state on the Chinese model?

  • MothMan

These people are totally outside reality.

We have to borrow money from China to run our government and they just carry on like nothing has changed. Starting war after war, endlessly funding all this and we cant pay for any of it. And on top of that, now we are starting a war with Iran. Are these people completely insane?

Back in the medieval days they wouldn't teach the serfs to read to keep them from rebelling. This is the same thing. They know what they are doing would incite riots if the people knew what was really happening. Wikileaks is about to post a truly horrendous video showing wanton slaughter of civilians in Afghanistan, so naturally they are trying to assassinate him now because of “national security”. If our National security depends on this slaughter, then we should be VERY wary of predator drones being flow over US skies. Will they be bombing and killing innocent US civilians because of one “suspected US militant” . Me thinks so.

The type of government being administered in Iraq and Afghanistan is what is going to be brought to the US.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Praedor-Atrebates/100000458726564 Praedor Atrebates

People, this is clearly setup to be a means of killing access to Wikileaks. We mustn't allow the Sheeple to have access to truth. We must only be allowed access to government-approved propaganda (virtually ANYTHING that the mainstream press pulls out its ass).

I hit “like” for your comment, just one quibble.

The Dems who supported Lieberman’s continuing Chairmanship on the DHS Committee weren’t tricked, or fooled at all, they knew he’s a slimy prick who would stick it to the Dems every chance he could, yet they still supported him anyway.

Guess they figured as long as he was screwing the liberal base of the Democratic party, then no harm, no foul, even though it’s the liberals and labor unions which provide the bulk of the Dems GOTV efforts.

But since the Senate Dems want to kiss, not kick, Lieberman’s ass so much, then let the Blue Dogs do the GOTV efforts for the party and see how successful they are.

  • American Fascists

Lieberman cares only about Israel’s neocons, he doesn’t give a damn about Israelis who aren’t as far-right as he is.

  • Cbrozo

China can do it! Last time I checked, China was a dictatorship and the United States was not.

  • ComradeRutherford

Lieberman is quite clear: the US MUST become exactly like China if the obscenely wealthy are to remain in control.

  • ComradeRutherford

You must not have been paying attention since Reagan was 'elected' through vote rigging. Today the people acting as 'president' must be approved before hand by the obscenely wealthy cabal that controls the Executive Branch. Only pre-approved candidates are allowed to 'win' US elections.

This bill would be fine IF it were narrowed to give the Prez the ability to kill access to/from ONLY government networks and power grid networks. Beyond that in the civilian internet? Fuck off!

  • samfishx

It's not about controlling what you can and cannot see.

It's about turning access off in the event of a huge hack attack. If someone is using Amazon.com to send destructive viruses or whatever to everyone's PC's, they should be able to yank Amazon in the event of an emergency. I don't think any old hacker could really pull something off that would trigger what Lieberdouche is talking about, but this is more for hacking that would need government sized backing, a la similar to what China was doing to Google a few months back. That wasn't THAT bad, but if they can hack something as secure and massive as Google just to gank a few people's information, they can do something far more destructive if they wanted.

If China (or North Korea, Iran, Russia, etc) was pissed at us for some reason and we went to war, they could potentially do some major damage to everyone in this country, given how we're all connected now. That's what this is about. If we went to war with China, imagine if they started hacking into the major bank websites and draining people's accounts or something. Or uploading a virus through Yahoo to every IP address based in the United States and it's allies. It COULD happen and that's the level of maliciousness this is meant to counteract.

I'm not exactly eager to give the government this kind of power either, especially after 8 years of Bush and his abuses. But it's kind of a common sense safety measure. It's like saying you don't want any more fire extinguishers in buildings because some assholes came in and sprayed them all over the place for the fun of it or something. Just because there's the potential for abuse doesn't mean we shouldn't have it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Praedor-Atrebates/100000458726564 Praedor Atrebates

Oh you know, films and documents released by Wikileaks would be deemed a “national security threat” and they would ATTEMPT to prevent you accessing them. THAT is the target. You must NOT be allowed to see what your government or military is REALLY up to.

  • frantaylor

  • Jack45

    re Dual Citizenship

Much as it makes for exciting gossip, I just spoke to a Jacob in the senator's DC office to question whether or not it is true that the senator holds dual citizenship and I have been assured with 100% certainty that the senator holds citizenship only in the US. Intelligent people may question the motives of the senator, but spreading misinformation is not helpful.

If we were at war don't you think they would shut down the internet, no matter what the law said? Of course they would. This law is an unnecessary violation of our civil liberties.

  • tazdelaney

like most of our government officials, lieberman is a fascist thug. as with most of the dems, including obama and hillary, he voted in lockstep with the bush wars, war fundings, torture, surveillance, suppression of what few of our 'rights' remained. andanyway, when is america not at war. all but 40 years of american history, considering that the indian wars went on until 1900… the US has been at war… and during those years, the US backed despots and wars worldwide, fomenting conflicts everywhere. there's profit in every body bag.

there has been increasing expectation of a BIG war, or another 'terrorist' event, whether false-flag or otherwise… perhaps another blow to the economy starts the food riots and martial law? turn off our web? i tend to think that such an act would fill the streets with angry, rebellious crowds… but those can be handled. and if they can't access twitter and so on… easier to squelch.

for some years, i've been reading about the 'undernet.' it is said that the internet as it has been corraled is a sort of myth that the powers want us to believe is a fortress they control; whereas others say that the internet is as controllable as the electron universe. hackers and such need to be working round-the-clock to break open teh levees and let the undernet out. either that or fight fire with fire and focus a big HERF gun at DC, NSA, langley, wall street? gonna shut us down mofos? try a taste of your own totalitarian medicine.

  • braind

    Lieberman = bumb-ass…. nuf said.

  • sergesret

Exactly. Besides, the power grid and critical government networks have no business being connected to the internet in the first place. I'm sure it's cheaper and easier to do it that way, but critical functions should be disconnected and ideally run on incompatible hardware/software protocols. Ideally our infrastructure should be decentralized as much as possible, but if we are going to have monolithic entities like the power grid they should be totally fire walled.

  • Gregor_1970

This lieberman fella should move to Israel because that is whom he servers. He bows at Israels feet like the dog he is. Be a good doggy lieberman ans roll over and die scum.

  • tommy1733

I happen to like Joe Lieberman – he speaks his mind and is an independent thinker. A lot of political courage, considering the volume of useless drivel emails he must get from people like those who have commented below.

Did anybody actually think the issue through? I don't know enough about it from this article. Therefore I am keeping an open mind. But Lieberman's endorsement means I need to consider that viewpoint. It is great to have a politician who does not follow the party.

  • sergesret

If they are really interested in the security of our critical power, government and financial systems they should work on preemptively disconnecting as many of these as possible, preferably on a physical level. This should be doable for at least the power gird. The financial system will be more difficult to protect but it can and should be hardened. I'm sure just hooking everthing up to the Internet makes all these systems much easier and cheaper to implement but they are leaving themselves open by doing so. We can see what cheaping out has done for the Gulf of Mexico. Putting a 'shutoff switch' on the Internet is a really weak defense. You're only going to throw it if you detect an attack, but that means you are already under attack and likely seriously damaged. This is a cheap but useless feel good step for some politicians who want to look tough, at best, and something more sinister at worst. But like most of the Homeland Security BS, it's not going to really help us out with respect to the stated goal.

  • USMCR

I think its safe to say THERE IS JUST A WHOLE HELLUVA LOT YOU DON'T KNOW

And didn't have to read past…. “I happen to like joe Lieberman”….. ROFLMAO. Just how screwed up does a politican have to be before you think they might have a problem ?

I suppose you think what Lieberman says makes more sense than the Constitution we have in this country?

  • Harlowe Thrombey

Yes, Lieberman is to be admired in the fact that he is willing to buck his own party. That is a good trait.

But Lieberman is also a neoconservative, which means he has an “attack them first, before they attack us” mentality.

Lieberman has no problem with the War on Drugs; in fact, he wants to increase it.
Lieberman thinks marijuana users, including medical users, should go to federal prison, and he has reiterated this over and over.
Lieberman strongly favored the Patriot Act.
Lieberman strongly favored the RAVE Act (which allows the feds to seize nightclubs if marijuana or any other drug is observed being sold)
When Democrats and Progressives protested Bush and his PNAC World Wars, Joe Lieberman said such protesters were harming the nation.
Joe Lieberman was against putting anyone responsible for ordering torture, on military trial.

SO HOW THE HELL CAN ANYONE TRUST THIS PATHETIC AUTHORITARIAN'S JUDGMENT?

  • Moreclit

You are mistaken…Lieberman is the loudest mouthpiece for the Kadima party. Very effective one at that.

  • tommy1733

Are you implying that he reads a bit on the conservative side, that is certainly the case. I don't agree with everything he believes in (can you provide a source for some of your claims?) – my main point is that I feel that if he says something it is worth considering with an open mind. You cannot expect any politician to agree with you on everything, and you can expect there will be many who do not. But it is pretty rare to hear a politician speak his mind as courageously as Lieberman. Compare him to [sorry can't recall his name - the guy who apologized to BP for the shakedown] – a study in contrasts. since I can't get full agreement with everything I want, I'll take integrity.

  • tommy1733

Why not read the bill and decide for yourself.

This bill was just introduced in the US Senate on June 10, 2010, with a companion bill in the House introduced on June 16th, 2010.

The name is the same for both bills: Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010

Joe Lieberman, from Connecticut, introduced the bill in the Senate (6/10/2010). The number assigned to the SENATE version is S. 3480.

Jane Harman, from California's 36th District, introduced the bill in the House of Representatives (6/16/2010). The number assigned to the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES version is H.R. 5548

A video of Lieberman introducing the bill at a press conference is here … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ1j7HINIC0&feat…

Lieberman's perfectly willing to speak his mind; unfortunately, his mind is that of a corporatist. Lieberman puts Lieberman first; then his corporate funders; then Israel. The American public is not high on his list of priorities.

  • Abc

True; if Lieberman is elected again in 2012, it will likely mean the end of the world as we know it.

  • Stina

The point is that instead of blindly stating you're too lazy to actually read up on Joe's political track record you should educate yourself before telling people to 'be open minded' about their political dispositions. It's clear everyone else that read your post has also read up on this bill and Lieberman's voting history except the one person here claiming him to be 'not a bad guy' that should be 'listened to'……that one person is YOU.

Joe Lieberman is not a conservative or a liberal. He's not even a moderate. He's a corporatist (I believe someone else has already also stated as much.) He doesn't care about you me or america. He only cares about himself and power over the masses.

Suggesting we should have internet policy similar to China and IRAN FOR F*CKS SAKE is just ludicrous, stupd and shows exactly why people that know nothing about technology SHOULD NOT BE WRITING LEGISLATION ON IT.

Everything you say in that comment is spot on!

  • ComradeRutherford

Yes, I agree with you there. Kennedy's murder was the public's notice that the 'power behind the throne' was now fully in control and would brook no dissent from their agenda.

You can see it time and time again, as Presidents enter the office and within a week they are subjugated to the hidden power.

I saw it most clearly on the local level when Dinkins became mayor of New York City. After the election he looked great, strong, proud for having won. He looked confident and ready to start as he too the oath of office. – But then he seemed to disappear for about a week. When he was seen by the media again, he looked like he had been beaten up and hadn't slept all week. He was defeated and broken.

At that point it all became clear to me that he, as the mayor of NYC, got the same treatment as every president of the US has since Kennedy: the power behind the throne comes to you and tells you what they will let you accomplish and what they forbid you from even trying.

Now apply this to Obama. He spoke a fine line during the campaign, but look what he has and has not accomplished. It's pretty obvious what the “power behind the throne's” dictates are.

No president in America has any actual authority anymore, no matter what the Constitution has to say about it.

Tommy when they begin stripping you down, eventually you are naked, weak and totally at their mercy..SLAVERY.. you may see it differently, but look at the laws and fines, and the injustice practiced in our legal system… guilty 'til rich or proven innocent!!!! They are scrounging to cover their wasteful spending, and that's why we have law after freaking law…. these laws by the way aren't to protect anyone, they are simply to slander a person, cover government spending waste mainly, and where does it leave those pushed into the crack= institutionalized, or slave to the grind because people don't hire convicts…..

  • AmericaRevolt

he is a madman, loose cannon…. he is the example of why politics as a career is unconstitutional, invites corruption, and wealths a man who isn't earnest… which in turn is not honest…. so, what you get more less is evil and spiteful…. not protective, just, and innocent

  • AmericaRevolt

whoa… what is the rest of the point??? actually, if not for the constitution… we couldn't be here debating this now…. we probably wouldn't even be on the internet either…. unless your pockets are deep enough….

  • AmericaRevolt

oh no… terrorist are gonna jump out of my pc and suicide bomb it….. it's true liarman said it oops i mean lieberman…. for pete's sake tommy, how old are you? you must be a youngster who thinks Joe is a cool renegade to Washington…. which in turn he is just a puppet marching you to slavery….. wise up look deep and good….. World leaders code of reign= COMMAND CONQUER CONTROL been that way since day 1 no matter a president, prime minister, king or czar….etc…. WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!

  • AmericaRevolt

withhold??? is that what you call it?? lmao tommy boy…..

  • starchild

Joseph Lieberman should be thrown out of office and prosecuted for violating his oath of office to uphold the Constitution.

  • Arch_NME

What a moron… It's obvious that he has no idea how the Internet works or the implications of what he's proposing. I can't even fathom a way you could set this up where it wouldn't have a massive potential for abuse and further I don't even see how it would make anything more secure. What even makes him remotely qualified to draft such legislation? This clown probably struggles to even use his own computer on a day to day basis.

FedUp, we just don't have any idea the depth and breadth of their devious schemes to bring this country down. I've never seen anything like this. The hatred of America and its citizenry is beyond all comprehension. Be prepared, we're headed for a rough ride I'm afraid!

Yes, economic, transportation, energy or government systems can be dismantled through the internet; but those same terrorists would have a way to open up and use the internet once it was 'shut down' by our government for protection. So what is the point? By stopping the freedom of speech during an internet blitz you would only be doing just that; stopping the freedom of speech, the free press and exchange of information between the citizens who pay for government to live in Washington, D.C.
