I was going to post on the newest fucked up revelations about the Sharron Angle campaign, but right now I’m so fucking pissed about this whole situation with Dave Weigel resigning and Ezra Klein shutting down Journolist, I’m going to post on that instead. My thoughts are scattershot, so instead of even attempting to flow them together, I’m just going with old-fashioned numbering.

1) It’s indicative of the mental weakness that dominates the Village right now that Dave had to apologize for his remarks on Journolist, much less resign. I don’t think it’s ever smart to use suicide as a rhetorical device, precisely because it gives people an opening to act like you wished violence on them, so I agree that it was intemperate of Dave to say that Matt Drudge should set himself on fire. But no one over the age of 5 really believe Dave was being literal here, so basically he’s being punished for speaking ill of the Village god Matt Drudge. But there’s nothing incorrect about the point that Dave was making—Matt Drudge is a fucked up person, and everyone knows it. He’s a creepy little twerp whose “politics” spring less from any coherent belief system and more a combination of sadism and attention-whoring. He’s too much of a disaster of a human being to be allowed to put together the menu at a restaurant that only serves grilled cheese sandwiches, much less set the agenda of the entire DC media establishment. People who use Drudge for leads should be ashamed of themselves. Anyone who defends him should eat a shit sandwich in shame.

2) In case it’s not obvious, Jesse and I are both on Journolist. Unlike a lot of people, I have no doubt that it was someone on the listserv—someone who agreed to keep the listserv private—that leaked the emails to the gossip blog Fishbowl. I know back-stabbing hater behavior when I see it, and this is textbook. Dave rather recently got the plum job at the Washington Post, and that’s the sort of thing that brings haters out of the woodwork. Whoever decided to ruin him probably thinks of him or herself as a good liberal, and probably thinks they deserve the job that Dave got. Well, you’re not, and I’ll bet a million dollars that you don’t. So congrats. Enjoy your moment of successful hating today. Tomorrow morning, whoever you are, you’re going to wake up the same hack you always were. Except now you’ll be covered in slime and responsible for taking someone out of a job where they were actually doing good, useful work. You fail on every level, asshole. Maybe if you spent more time working and less time hating on people with more talent than you, you wouldn’t be driven to perform gross acts of haterade.

3) Nothing has really driven home to me how immature supposedly grown people can be like this bullshit over Journolist. I like gossip as much as the next person, but for fuck’s sake, have some perspective. There’s a gusher of oil under the Gulf of Mexico, people coming home in body bags, and an increasingly alarming turn to the violent and wacked-out in the conservative movement. And people are going to shit their pants because someone talked shit on a listserv? Are you fucking kidding me?! I’ve seen more maturity and perspective amongst 8th graders fighting over who kissed who playing Spin the Bottle.

That is all. Fuck me, this whole thing is the stupidest round of bullshit I’ve seen in a long ass time.
