Huckabee defends using term ‘ick factor’ to describe gays

Mike Huckabee has said he believes there is an “ick factor” to homosexuality. The former Arkansas governor defended his remarks Sunday by saying he wasn’t the first to use the term.

Huckabee said he got the term from University of Chicago professor Martha Nussbaum — but Nussbaum says she never used or coined the term.

In a recent interview with The New Yorker magazine, Ariel Levy asked Huckabee to explain his opposition to gay rights.

“I do believe that God created male and female and intended for marriage to be the relationship of the two opposite sexes,” he said. “Male and female are biologically compatible to have a relationship. We can get into the ick factor, but the fact is two men in a relationship, two women in a relationship, biologically, that doesn’t work the same.”

I asked him if he had any arguments that didn’t have to do with God or ickiness. “There are some pretty startling studies that show if you want to end poverty it’s not education and race, it’s monogamous marriage,” he said. “Many studies show that children who grow up in a healthy environment where they have both a mother and a father figure have both a healthier outlook and a different perspective from kids who don’t have the presence of both.”

Human Rights Campaign Vice President Fred Sainz said Huckabee’s comments were “no surprise from a man who is consistently wrong and uninformed.” Sainz told Politico:

“Ick is being fired from a job, being the victim of a hate crime or being bullied at school simply because you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender,” Sainz added. “And ick is certainly an appropriate way to describe Mr. Huckabee’s mind going to sex when all that we are asking for is our equality. Ick indeed.”

Speaking to Fox News’ Chris Wallace Sunday, Huckabee implied that his use of the term was acceptable because it had once been used in a gay magazine.

“That term comes from a gay magazine called The Edge in which the author, Joseph Erbentraut, interviewed professor Martha Nussbaum from — one of Barack Obama’s colleagues [from] The University of Chicago. She uses a term ‘projected disgust.’ He, in the interview, coined this phrase. It’s in the article that he wrote. It’s in the interview with her. That phrase was not mine. It is actually a phrase that exists within the gay community. But somehow it is okay if they talk about it but if someone else talks about it, it is off bounds,” explained Huckabee.

But Nussbaum claims that she never used the term “ick factor” when talking about gay issues.

“I have never used the phrase ‘ick factor’ in any of my three books dealing with the emotion of disgust, or in any articles,” Nussbaum said in an email quoted by news sources. “I use the term ‘projective disgust’ to characterize the disgust that many people feel when they imagine gay sex acts.”

She continued, “Projective disgust has its origin in a discomfort with one’s own body … including sexuality, and that, in a defense mechanism, disgust is then projected outward onto vulnerable groups who are characterized as hyperphysical and hypersexual. In this way, the uncomfortable people displace their discomfort onto others, who are then targeted for various forms of social discrimination.”

Gov. Huckabee “owes me a public apology,” Nussbaum concluded.

“Many studies show that children who grow up in a healthy environment where they have both a mother and a father figure have both a healthier outlook and a different perspective from kids who don’t have the presence of both.”

More studies show that children who are abused go on to clog up our mental health systems, our narcotic and alcohol treatment centers, our prisons and are close friends with suicide. The cost of abuse to the country is estimated at $400 billion.

Gov. Huckabee owes us all an apology, certainly for his remarks but also for being focussed on the wrong problem. The key is the healthy environment he mentions. Maybe if he stopped focussing on man made dogma and started to focus on known facts we'd all make more progress as a society?

  • CarlPagan

What a crock of shit. Why is it, that everytime someone says “studies have shown…” without actually providing any data from any specific studies, they're totally full of shit.

Mr. Sexually Repressed needs to learn how to enjoy life and accept all its wonders, gay or straight. Does he have to argue with his hardon when he sees two beautiful women kissing?

  • justjoeindenver

There's just too much irony. It's always the same – those who radically and violently oppose an ideology do so because of their own insecurities. I don't understand all the controversy. Really, unless you're engaging in a sex act with another consenting adult, should what they do behind closed doors really matter to anyone, ever?

Using his propagation of species under the watchful eyes of god theory, wouldn't the same god, noting an overpopulated planet want to encourage homosexual relationships to prevent a depletion of resources? Perhaps this is the wave of the future….

  • colpow

I get projective disgust just looking at a picture of Huckabee.

  • DickTucker

Some right-wing piece of shit said something bigoted and outrageous again. Yawn. If somebody tracked the son of a bitch down, grabbed him by the lapels and shook him until he had brain damage- er- more brain damage, that would be interesting news.

  • Dolmance

I'm sure that there would be an “ick” factor experienced by anyone who imagines Mike Huckaby or any member of his family having sex. But I'm sure most people don't contemplate the guy having sex when they think about him. Not imagining this man having sex is being an adult who isn't crazy.

  • Dolmance

They wouldn't report it because they only like bad news.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/DMGJPNOANGLJT5TWPUKDILMDA4 Mr.French

There's an “ick” factor to Huckabee, period. I come closer to projectile disgust than projective.

He's quite a character – intelligent, personable, and incredibly wrong-headed. I shouldn't be surprised that anyone who believes the Grand Canyon is roughly 6000 years old would be incapable of a rational discussion about homosexuality.

Keep bringing him on those Sunday shows, though. He provides terrific fodder for political ads (“is this REALLY the kind of thinking you want in Washington?”).

  • jwkessler
  • billfromny

He'll be happy to know that I find the “ick” term acceptable and appropriate for describing Huckabee.

  • shinyorbs

yeah well ok but the biggest ick factor and I mean BIGGEST ick factor is his FAT, fugly family

  • scytherius

Funny, the ‘ick factor’ is how I feel about Christians.

  • tenorlord

“Ick factor” was used by critics reviewing “Brokeback Mountain”. No one said a thing about it then.
Maybe because critics are perceived as urbane sophisticates, and Huckabee isn't. Be fair.
There's plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike Huckabee, but I don't feel this one holds water.

  • Yavo

Huckabee implied that his use of the term was acceptable because it had once been used in a gay magazine.

    Huckabee reads gay magazines?

  • alverant

But critics aren't trying to impose laws promoting their bigotries. Nor do they have any secular power. You're comparing apples to oranges.

  • USEXPAT

ha… he is reading them obviously… I am sure its merely research to debunk gayness everywhere… I'm going to laugh when some snaps his photograph in the highway rest stop bathroom visits…

  • tomhoser

I'm assuming a standard form of “cover your ass” and “backpedaling”. When a politician makes a gaff or trips on his dick, they send researchers out to gather any crumb that can be used to mitigate the circumstances.

  • geo1671

I really do hate looking and listening to this poli'TICK piece of sh!t
Just imagine if Drone F'uckAbee was gay? — Lonely Queen and No Honey!

  • tenorlord

As I said, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike him as a candidate, but use of this term isn't one of them. The term has already entered the public arena without protest.
However, I certainly wouldn't want him choosing anyone for SCOTUS, and I would hope most voters would feel the same.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/I7APPHGULUUFSZTUSHEATZBP3Q leirbag96

Those Republicans and right-wingers who criticize and persecute Gays have been shown to be closeted themselves……they can't deal with it…..so they lash out! Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, Larry Craig etc. As a gay man, I am ashamed to be counted amongst them.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

The phrase was coined much earlier than that.

“The One With The Ick Factor” is the twenty-second episode of the first season of Friends, which aired on NBC on May 4, 1995.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0583616/

  • H.P. Loathecraft

    Amen

  • H.P. Loathecraft

    Or is that Ickabee?

  • H.P. Loathecraft

What's worse is when the vapid interviewer gives such specious claims a pass.
Real journalists response: “Please cite *one* such study, Mr. Ickabee…”

  • shinyorbs

WHO GIVES A FUCK WHO COINED THE DAMN THING!!! Fact is, he said it. He basically told Mary Cheney to go fuck herself

Are any of you liberals still waiting waiting with bailted breath for those Iranian blowhards to send warships to break the Israeli blockade?

  • Talis

Another self hating member of the American Taliban. Obviously the Huckster is gay. Why else does he spend so much time thinking about sex between men?

  • Talis

Broc I am a liberal and dont want the blockade broken by Iran. So what the hell are you talking about?
Are you and your American Taliban friends waiting for the rapture?

  • Talis

But use of the term by him is just more evidence of his hate, bigotry and prejudice.
He is a traitor to America.
What kind of American wants to persecute other Americans?

  • tenorlord

Then why is it only objectionable when HE says it?
It's been used before and no one cared until Huckabee said it.
If he says “the” should the “Definite Articlists” of the world protest?

  • chrislib

It's exactly how I feel when thinking about Judas Huckabeus, any republicon, and especially theofascists. “Ick,” and “Eeeewwww,” are only the beginning of how disgusting they arre.

  • chrislib

Any of you reslugs still waiting for Judas Huckabeus or Scary Palin to say something that ISN”T a lie or hatespeech?

  • chrislib

Yes, we should protest Judas Huckabeus because he sells lies and hate while pretending to be a minister of the gospel.

  • chrislib

It's a great reason to hate him because it reminds us of what a pile of shit he is.

  • BrainRagYell

    Any loyal Republican, that's who.

  • Hooker

If someone calls someone else something demeaning and disgusting – the “N” word for example, than does that make it just fine for eveyone to use it? Especially public figures who have wide audience? And what about other demeaning epithets we are all familiar with? Can you imagine if we all went around spewing all the ugly words we know just because they've been said before?

  • tenorlord

    Don't they all?

  • http://biscuits007.wordpress.com/ protobone

Nothing defines “ick factor” like McHuckabee. Someday Mr. Homophobic will crawl out the closet and won't that be icky.

  • mindboggeling

If heterosexuals were created by god, who made gays? Huckabee gives me the ick factor. He is insulting millions of people and hides his bigotry behind his religion. The great man of god judging others because they are different than him. I personally think he is a sexually repressed fat gay man. After seeing a picture of huckabee and his family I think it would behoove him to concentrate more on the health of his family. I'm sure when god created the human race he didn't think they would judge each other for being born gay. Huckabee and his fat kids weren't born fat.. I'm sure god is disappointed that they are all gluttons. Huckabee needs to read his bible more as he seems to be missing the very basics of religion. Love thy neighbor as thy self. Judge not lest ye be judge. Faith, hope and CHARITY!

  • Anonymous

Ick factor, huh? Is that anything like the feeling most people get when they think about Rush Limbaugh getting married again? I think “ick” would be a good word to describe what it was like to listen to Mark Sanford telling everyone about his extra-marital relationship, too. Or, thinking about Dick Cheney and his wife having kids and knowing what it took to conceive them. That’s one hell of an ick factor there. I think we need to pass some laws to make it illegal for icky people to have relationships of any kind. We need to make sure that icky people can’t be in a position to do icky things together, and if they’re allowed to be in a relationship they might just do them. We all hate to think of icky things and we need to pass laws to help us all keep from thinking about them.

  • Richie73

The difference is in intention. A progressive commentator may well use the word to describe other people's discomfort with homosexuality. Huckabee didn't do that. He used the word to describe how HE feels, and how, by extension, he thinks EVERYONE SHOULD feel.

It's the same difference as mentioning the n-word in a discussion of racism and calling someone a n*ger. The former is ok, the latter isn't.

  • Patriot101

The Republican party needs to out all of their Gays before they try to out other gays! Just saying!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/5ADH43ZCS3NITAIJKNHHOXH5SY C H

He used the term he claimed some woman used. That is his excuse for what he said. Poor man, he had to wait till someone said something he agreed with. Like most of the current crop of evangelists he is so far away from the teachings of Jesus, that he actually does not believe what he claims. He is homophobic, nasty, with such a lack of christian charity and openness, he is a hypocrite. He like most of what passes for religion is not worth spit.

I took the cure long since.

  • Phil E. Drifter

You gotta remember, this fat f*ck had gastric bypass surgery because he was a big fat f*ck and instead of working out for months on end he just used his big fat paycheck to have his fat surgically removed, stomach stapled.

Where is your god now, Huckabee? If god wanted you thin he wouldn't have mad you fat, hmm?

Reminds me of Carlin, fsm-rest his soul. “we get to choose which forms of life we feel are sacred, and we get to kill the rest. Lions and tigers? Because it's fun! Chickens and pigs. Because we're hungry. Flies and mosquitoes? Because they're pests! And people! We kill people! Why? Because… it's fun! And…they're pests!

You never see a bumper sticker that says “Save the tumors” or “I brake for advanced melanoma.”

  • tenorlord

    At last, an intelligent answer!
    The difference is in INTENT!
Since he never intended to go to the “ick factor”, why did he even mention it?
To bring it to mind of those who might support him! Ick indeed!!

Now, a question to ask ourselves: If a gay man contemplates going down on a woman, is there an “Ick Factor”? Does it seem icky? Doesn't “Ick factor” really refer to sex with a gender that would not be your choice?

  • http://twitter.com/shivabeach Shiva

Huck, lemme ask ya. Who cares what you think about your ability to alienate voters?

  • rinsac

ICK is the word that has always come to me when I see, hear of think of Huckabee. Narrow minded, bigoted, fool!

  • ptruth

What the heck is all the b.s. about? Homosexuality has always been considered disgusting, but has been finally come to be an accepted form of “alternate” lifestyle in the past century. If it was considered “icky”, immoral, disgusting, etc., at one time, why expect that everyone should swallow the story that it's alright now? This is America, people. You can live your life as you see it, and take the criticism that free speech offers those that know how to express it. Be a homosexual if you will, and take the comments that come with it. Don't expect the world to accept you as you are, because that's just not realistic, no matter what you believe. If someone cuts down Christians, Jews, or other conservatives, it's their right to free speech being exercised, so why all the ruckus about this?

  • Talis

    Well that is obvious:)

  • Talis

Imagine? You dont have to imagine.
He is obviously a gay selfhater.
Ive never seen so many men claim to be hetero who spend all their time thinking about gay sex.
So many closeted repubes to out.
And many of them post right here..

  • Talis

tenor really? Are you that uninformed?
Huck ( the closeted selfhating gay man ) wants to persecute other gays. He uses words like the above to influence people. He wants the constitution changed to follow the bible. Yes you can actually look that up. He really does.
Now that makes him and any who support him no better than the Islamic fanatics.
He is a card carrying member of the American Taliban.

  • Talis

His use of the term cant be taken out of the context of his feelings about gays that he has made very clear.
He is “icky”. I am bigoted towards anyone who wants me to follow the rules they say came from their pretend friend.

  • Talis

I am a bit more general. For me the ick factor applies to almost all cult members who cant use rational thought and critical thinking.

  • tenorlord

Ick is a word that describes what happens to fish when pulled from the water with a dry hand.

  • tenorlord

Perhaps my question deserves a thread of it's own:

If a gay man contemplates going down on a woman, (say, a wager is involved, or a game of spin the bottle at an orgy) is there an “Ick Factor”?
    Does it seem icky?
Doesn't “Ick factor” really refer to sex with a gender that would not be your choice?

    Opinions, gentlemen?

  • http://www.focced.com/ healingshoes

That's ok. Cuz it means Huckabee can't complain when we use the term “inbred factor” to refer to homophobic Christians…

  • mindboggeling

The way to end poverty is thru monogamous marriage? Really? Then lets all go back to 50's when women were barefoot and pregnant and there was no poverty. Wait why was AFDC started again? Oh ya because heterosexual men would walk away from their families leaving their children and wife with no means of support. If huckabee and the rest of the right wingers are so worried about the sanctity of marriage maybe they should outlaw divorce. The pompous and arrogant preacher is a narrow minded jerk. He should start looking inward and unless he is perfect keep his mouth shut on subjects that he obviously doesn't understand

  • Tinghoo

LOL, you have to admit thats pretty funny stuff dude.

  • oktoss

“Projective disgust has its origin in a discomfort with one's own body … including sexuality … “

Huckabee has had his stomach stapled and he's STILL hung up about his body. I wonder what his real problem is.

  • Jack_in_Ann_Arbor

I can tell just by looking at you, Mr. Huckabee that you have a long-term problem with alcohol, and you certainly have a high ick factor, based on nothing more than your ceaseless public pronouncements against the people who are never going to vote for you, even if you are the last candidate in the world. Whew. So, Mr. Huckabee, try to get control of that drinking problem before we, and you, start to forget your name completely.

  • PeteWa

the thought of sex with women does not produce any 'ick factor' for me,
it just doesn't turn me on.

The existence of homosexual people is a fact of our humanity.

The acceptance of fact is the first of the primary qualifications for leadership – and for being taken seriously.

Yeah I know, that's what I was thinking. Whathefuck is that? These guys are amazing, like I say all republicans are self loathing gays. They will not let a guy join the GOP unless he loves fellating. No, really. I worked in DC in the oghts' (00's) and all those dudes at the RNC were gay.

Just like a Baptist preacher — he falls back on an argument of authority when called on the carpet. “Professor So-And-So said it.” Or, “It's in the Bible.”

  • WilyArmadilla

“Homosexuality has always been considered disgusting…”?!! Don’t know much about history do you? Among pre-christian civilizations, homosexuality was fairly common. In fact, it was so unremarkable that there is no single word in either ancient Latin or ancient Greek with the same meaning as the modern concept of homosexuality. (In case you didn't know it, Greece and Rome gave us the very foundations of our modern Western democracies)

If you’re going to comment, at least *try* to make sure the ‘facts’ you cite are indeed facts. Very few things in this world are 'always' or 'never'…especially if you're talking about human behavior.
