Sent you a reply. Great post. Really. Just when I am close to concluding that everyone in our world is reactionary, emotionally driven or just plain mean, I read something like what you wrote. To each their own (in this case, I’m referring to belief-system) but I must say, it appears that your conclusion, although well thought out, still omits a few considerations. Then again, I may be wrong in that assertion, because often times this kind of forum doesn’t really allow one to truly express/explain what they’re conveying in a really meaningful way. Words in print often fall short. Like everyone else, I’m also a product of the world in which I live, have lived and continue to live. I do, however, try my best to keep an open mind on all topics, including religion. Iran is three times the size of France (210,000 square miles, 630,000 square miles). Something like 1,000 nuclear sites have been identified. Many more presumably have not been identified. One may presume that all the sites are concealed and well hardened. Some may have been created as deceptions. For these reasons I believe the reported strike will not succeed completely but rather envenom the Middle East even further, without solving the problem. Israel has strong deterrent and counter strike, which I believe are sufficient to assure her security against attack. I may be wrong and all may go swimmingly. But to me the whole plan is an example of the tacticization of strategy–the belief, shared by some Americans, and traditionally by the Germans and Japanese (in WWII) that some razzle dazzle operation could accomplish a fundamentally impossible set of goals, and the consequent concentration on means rather than on ends. If we ask about ends, then what Israel needs, if she is to survive and be a homeland for Israelis as yet unborn, is peace with her neighbors. Indefinite military hegemony in the region is simply impossible and will end, perhaps with this strike if it goes wrong. The Israelis should be thinking long term about how to make an enduring peace. Of one thing I am certain: it will require a complete withdrawal to the 1967 borders, so it is time to begin to get used to that idea.

Making peace is going to be VERY TOUGH. But making war is going to be DISASTROUS in my opinion. No way exists for little Israel with her tiny population to maintain an overwhelming military hegemony in the Middle East, no matter what. So peace is the only alternative. My point is that rather than focusing so hard on the tactics of war, which are unlikely to guarantee her survival, Israel work hard instead on the strategies of peace, difficult as they may be to discern, and pursue them. Jabotinsky had a recipe (1) defeat the Arabs totally in a war (2) immediately make a generous peace. Unfortunately Israel did only the first in 1967 and has not had a genuinely successful war since. Nor will she have any more. If the Middle East becomes even more envenomed, just imagine what sorts of terrorist and other tactics are going to be used against Israel and all who are seen to support her.

I don't necessarily disagree with your post, but at this point Israel could withdraw to a grain of sand on the Med sea and it wouldn't be far enough for Hamas, nor Iran for that matter. They've tried “long term” peace initiatives and just got more of the same. Should that sequence of events come to pass, the world should brace for Israel to surround and completely cut off the West Bank, mercilessly attack Gaza (with small arms, artillery and air strikes), and air burst (at low altitude) several salvos of nuclear weapons over targets just inside Southern Lebanon, and within Syria as well.

Simultaneously Israel would deal out a much more devastating series of nuclear ground burst (which expands the area of radiological harm greatly) attacks on select sites within Iran, crippling the Iranian military, and civilian support infrastructure capabilities as well.

While some may see the above synopsis as “Doomsday”, that would only be somewhat so for Israel's most radicalized enemies.

Why? Because the Israeli's have prepared themselves very well for a fight precisely like this.

And, even after completing a series of very hard conventional and non-conventional strikes, Israel would still retain more than half of it's nuclear strike capability, with the ability to utilize any of several diverse delivery systems for each of those powerful devices.

That being so, it would be foolish at best for any of the nearby or even larger powers to put themselves at risk by siding with the radicals in any substantial way.

I just don't see it. Other middle east states will go nuclear no matter what Israel does–one cannot preempt indefinitely. Pakistan has bombs that can be shared. As a former US military member, US troops are not children playing in sand. I was raised in a religious house. I went to religious schools for all 12 years of my education (I skipped kindergarten.) I was hauled to church EVERY week from birth to the age of 18. Yes. I have read the bible. One time, cover to cover because I was bored. I read voraciously as a child, no subject was considered too boring to investigate.

My parents are educated (university level). As I grew up I was very aware of hypocrisy surrounding me. I was preached at to respect all people, but then listened to my parents talking about the “pakies” coming over and taking “our” jobs. And the dirty Indians coming in from reservations and making trouble. My family (extended family included, as well as family friends) could say horrible things about others, then turn around and believe they themselves were good people.

By the age of 12, I had a good feeling that I didn't fit in with that world. It felt wrong to me to use religion to justify doing anything you pleased. I used to tell people that I'd love to have Jesus over for a chat, but the Christians could go stuff themselves.

On the 4th day of grade 12, I was sitting in my religion class and we were discussing pre-marital sex. We were all “questioned” by the teacher on our views, and I said that I saw no problem with it, as long as it was between adults, and both were okay with it and understood the possible consequences. I was screamed at for 10 minutes that I was going to hell for saying that. I picked up my books and walked out of class – never to return. I wrote the final exam and got 100% however I failed the course (classroom work) and didn't graduate because of those 3 missed credits.

The day I walked out, I was done with Christianity. I couldn't take the lies anymore. I floundered around for years dabbled in a bit of this and that (as far as belief systems). The thing for the Iranians to do is start closing the Strait of Hormuz right now. Announce it, deploy non magnetic and pop up mines, get land based rockets and artillery aligned. US will have to move against that, which will be messy, and throw the planned Israeli precision strike into confusion. Furthermore, closing is not aggressive in the sense that anyone can avoid damage by not going there. Insurance rates will go up. warcolleger, if worldwide economic conditions weren't already so dire, I may be tempted to agree, at least to some degree, regarding Iran's ability to close “the Strait of Hormuz” for any considerable length of time.

However, no event occurs within a vacuum, and current world economic conditions would exponentially increase the danger to the Iranian leadership and military, should they make any serious attempt to close the Strait.

In the event Iran does move to close the Strait, I would anticipate a rapidly escalating violent response, and by a larger variety of powers, than would have occurred during brighter economic times.

I would also anticipate the Iranian military being fully humbled rather rapidly, following a very brief set of initial battle victories.

With that somewhat obvious, the Iranian leadership would very likely not commit to any long term continuance of a Strait blockade strategy. Fearing loyal but demoralized and shrinking forces could not adequately defend the regime from a rapidly re-inflated internal political conflict. Which would certainly be eager to come out of hiding to take full advantage of any opportunity to topple the heavy handed regime, once it's ability to control the inflamed populace has been substantially weakened by superior external forces.

The US warships are there to protect Iran. Please remember back to Vietnam when the South Vietnamese Air force was prepared to bomb the dikes in North Vietnam. With engines running and ready for takeoff, the South Vietnamese Air Force blinked. They were told, in no uncertain terms, that if they took off to bomb the dikes, the US Air Force would shoot them down. The same may be true today with this President – he does not want a wider war and is prepared to shoot down the Israeli Air Force is they attempt to bomb Iran. There is a precedent for this thinking.

Don't count on it. South Vietnam in 1960's did not have nuclear weapons and was in no way comparable to Isreal today. Any power with more than a few nuclear weapons can dictate whatever it wishes to Obama if its back is against the wall while fighting for its own survival. One nuclear bomb near Washington, one near NYC and one near Bagdad would take care of most flight restrictions. Keep in mind that such weapons could already be in place and may not need aircraft for delivery. This statement would make sense against a rational enemy, but the Iranian regime is not rational. The mullahs are “twelvers” who believe in the imminent return of the 12th imam, the mahdi. They believe that he can only return during a time of worldwide violence and upheaval, and their nuclear program is intended to bring this about. Nuclear deterrance just doesn't work against crazies like this.

Even if Israel were facing a rational opponent, however, the nuclear deterrance “containment” strategy would still be a dangerous mistake. Israel is tiny, barely the size of New Jersey, and has only about 5 million inhabitants. If they were to employ a strategy that assumed they would absorb a first strike and would defend themselves via a nuclear counterattack, there likely would be very little left to defend. You can assume that their ability to strike back would deter potential enemies, but Israel's leaders are fortunately smart enough to realize that it only takes one miscalculation or accidental release by an enemy to make retaliation a moot point.
