G20 cops ‘threatened women with rape’

Journalists covering the G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, last weekend have accused the local police of threatening them with rape, using male officers to strip-search young women, and even inappropriately touching an underage girl.

Four reporters have filed complaints with the province of Ontario’s police oversight agency. According to the Canwest News Service, those four include Jesse Rosenfeld, a freelancer for the UK’s Guardian whose alleged beating at the hands of Toronto police was chronicled on Twitter, as well Amy Miller of the Alternative Media Center.

Miller told a press conference earlier this week that she had her press pass ripped away from her and was “throttled by the neck and held down” while trying to record a confrontation between police and protesters. She was detained for 13 hours in a cage in a converted film studio on the city’s east side, along with about 25 other women.

“I was told I was going to be raped, I was told I was going to be gang-banged, I was told that I was never going to want to act as a journalist again by making sure that I would be repeatedly raped while I was in jail,” Miller said.

Miller described the police’s alleged behavior as “repulsive and completely inappropriate.”

She also said she saw women being strip-searched by male officers, and that many of the women who emerged from detention were “definitely traumatized.”

Reporters also allege that “one under-aged girl was improperly touched by a male officer while held at an Eastern Ave. detention center,” the QMI news agency reports.

In a rare criticism of Canada, Amnesty International called on the country’s political leadership to hold a public inquiry into the policing of the G20 summit, which ran from June 26 to 27 and attracted between 10,000 and 25,000 protesters. All told, more than 900 people were arrested during the summit — reportedly a record high for this kind of summit meeting.

Faced with growing criticism, political leaders and Toronto police chief Bill Blair have been fighting back against accusations that the police response to a gang of black-clad anarchists setting police cars on fire and breaking windows was excessive.

Chief Blair held a conference Tuesday where he described the vandals as “terrorists” and put on display a cache of weapons evidently seized from protesters at the summit. But the public-relations triumph turned to embarrassment when it emerged that some of the weapons on display were not related to the G20 protests.

The Toronto Sun reports that some of the weapons there, including arrows seized by police near the G20 site, were toys that belonged to a man who was on his way to a fantasy role-playing game when he was stopped by police, a day before the G20 summit.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association said that police conduct during the meeting of the leaders of the world’s top economies, was “at times, disproportionate, arbitrary and excessive.”

The response to pockets of criminal activity was also “unprecedented, disproportionate and, at times, unconstitutional,” the rights group said in a report.

The abuses “exceeded the threshold of a few isolated incidents” and “they demand accountability,” it said in calling for an inquiry into police conduct.

Toronto’s mayor and police chief Blair said the city’s Police Services Board, a civilian oversight panel, would review the squad’s actions, which they also defended.

“The fact that there were no serious injuries arising from all of the actions of the police over the course of the weekend is quite frankly extraordinary under the circumstances,” said police chief Bill Blair.

Officers “showed remarkable restraint in the face of enormous provocation,” he added. “They did their jobs.”

The culprits are part of the investigators, it must be a judicial and international enquiry. I have a second hand account by a victim of the Mounties, and it is totally inhuman. The person has been traumatised for the rest of her life.

    rape the pigs (cops) wives!!

Welcome the western world to the police state that is growing and growing and our politicians are laughing. You want to know one of the reasons why democracies which are few and fleating die, just read this article of many and you will get the picture. You know I kind of wish we do fall full tilt into a police state here and in canada. This way we will truly know what it's like and actually start to think that being ignorant and naive and a religious zealot won't save you from being bullied, harrassed, and beaten any time a govt. official or police want to do that.

You know what I see in the future, a girl after a long and hard journey finally makes it into a country as an illegal alien to a better future she hopes. Her name is Samanth, she was born in Toronto but things got so bad there that she moved to Indianapolis IND. Once the US became a shell of itself and a land of 10,000 dictators, she managed to sneak into Argentina for a better life. We in the US don't think things like this will happen to us because we are exceptional and this stuff only happens to THOSE people or THOSE countries. The Romans thought they where exceptional, the Ottomans, the British,. All empires big or small eventuall fall unto themselves and are a shell of what they where. If our politicians would spend more time reading real history they would know that unless you change your way of doing business politically and socially speaking, you will always follow the footsteps of those empires that went before you. The difference this time is that it will be in High Definition for everybody to see.

  • PeteWa

    sounds like cops to me.

    fucking assholes.

  • PeteWa

    no shit.
I agree with what you said 100%.
you either find rape wrong, or you don't.
clearly, 'wiseturtle' doesn't think it's wrong, as long as he can choose the target.

  • smallbear

I don't need to experience that sort of abuse to know how wrong it is. I can see it happening all around the world. The problem is that so many people don't understand that it CAN happen to them and they are not immune. History DOES repeat, unless you make a conscious effort to prevent it.

  • Prattvictory

Sounds like recycled Iraqi contractors to me.

    fucking assholes.

One of the side effects of our continuing “war on terror” is building a culture of terror. Dehumanized zombies who see themselves as badassses that rules or human decency no longer apply. They are our domestic death squads. They will become more empowered like jackbooted thugs to enforce the new world order.

    Welcome to the future.

The face of the real power in the world. No matter where they hold the G20 it always looks the same. Repression of the people by the power. It will only stop when corporations are restricted from political activities and there is redistribution of concentrated wealth to the benefit of the citizens. National governments are a front and distraction from the real powers. Witness the speed of the bailout and lack of popular input while the need of the unemployed has yet to be addressed.Power and privilege of the few over the many. Time to realize the real foe is corporate governance and that the political bickering between right and left is the distraction from a united commitment to democratic principles over plutocratic arrogance.

  • Tio Holtzman

Welcome to the present. This is reality and it makes me sick.

  • Kurt_O

These abuses are not done solely for intimidation purposes, although that's one of their objectives. The larger aim of the PTB is to continue to inflame tensions between the citizenry and law enforcement. They want law enforcement to view ALL citizens with suspicion and they want the citizenry to view ALL law enforcement as jack boot Nazis.

This was done in the States back in the '60s during Viet Nam. It led to incidents like Kent State, which of course is what they want. If they have their way widespread unrest combined with dire economic times will allow them to usher in a new era of the police state like none we've yet seen here.

  • http://gothlaw.blogspot.com Sarcasmlost

“… no serious injuries arising from all the police actions over over the course of the weekend.”, police chief Bill Blair.

Perhaps no intense physical injury but from the description there was sexual assault by police authorities. Shame.

  • OldSmokeys

Around here we carry weapons to our rallies, and if the use of force comes up we defend ourselves! The punks back the hell off as they know well and good we know the constitution. In the country of Canada its got Ivan the Terrible aka John Harper.

The good news is Civlian Review boards are already law in Canada so they can review any abuse by police as should be required everywhere. Toronto needs a miracle. Start by carrying a tazer rifle and get it all on video, if one of them really gets at you push back at THEM and capture it all on video tape. Legally use it for any action you take. The police will back down and run the other way, as they are learning listen the more we stand up in their face.

Bill Blair: I would advise you to stay the fuck in Canada. Put a TOE into the US and you better hope no one recognizes you….

Didn't I tell you Canadian men were pussies for letting these sociopaths attack women? Didn't I?

They are TRYING to provoke us: keep your cool, fade back, lure them in………the time draws closer…..
Test their lines, see how they react, where their reinforcements come from. Learn, observe, adjust. Which looks like the weakest link in the line?
Will we/can we jam their signal? You tell me Bill Blair……can we? Those Blackshirts with the armor and shields, fireproof? Hmmm? Eh Bill? Chemical resistant? Eh Bill?

You want to provoke? Be careful what you wish for Mr. Blair.

Now, you have a nice day, Mr. Blair…and oh, btw: how's your wife and female relatives doing,? Eh, Mr. Blair? Don't worry, no SERIOUS injury will occur to them. Eh, Mr. Blair?

  • farang

I wonder where these Canadian cops learned their rapist lingo…Iraq? Afghanistan? Eh, SoldierFire?

I'd lay odds they were “vets” of the illegal, immoral invasions and occupations Canada has undertaken for the US of Israel.

No, two wrongs do not make a right. However, if they start it, we finish it.

  • farang

Clearly, he is demonstrating the idiocy of Bill Blair's statement. Too bad you can't discern it.

One does not go into battle taking targets off the table when the enemy is not. This is not Marquis of Queensbury rules: these are terrorists and ENEMY COMBATANTS AGAINST FREEDOM.

I'll treat them accordingly. With all the “rights” they respect of ours…..zero.

Would we rape and harm innocent women? Do they????

I thought according to most Americans, criminals deserved to be raped? Rape happens every day in prisons. Glorified on shows like Law and Order, the butt of jokes on Jay Leno… Rape NOW is only wrong because the crimes were possibly trumped up? What a sick, 1st world society.

  • PrissyPatriot

Yes it is…these thug cops need to watch their own. That return Karma can be really bad. (especially when you go around threatening women with rape)

  • JSquercia

I have recently come to believe that most of the violence at these meetings of the GRAT and Powerful are indeed the work of undercover Police .This of course gives licence to their brothers to crack down on ALL protesters

The IRA knew how to deal with the the RUC (Northern Ireland's police force). Maybe the cops here in North America need a taste of that….

  • Texanthinker

Her whole discussion of the events seems pretty coreograhaped. They were filming kids being forceably held down and got arrested ? So were the cops may have been detaining have protestors who are burning, pillaging and destroying private property. Are the cops supposed to be gentle with these protestors who have exhibited violence ? Sorry, its not like these protests are non-violent and this is Martin Luther King walking down the street so the cops must respond with sufficient force to hold these criminals and then this “reporter” comes waltzing in and so she can twitter the scene.

I'd hazard to guess that all the stuff that happened in the jail pen was her being a drama queen and trying to create something to post on twitter or for the Guardian. I'd also guess the guards probably DID say some disparaging things to them but did anything actually HAPPEN to them ? The underage girl being 'strip searched' …was it a full body cavity search or did they just ask her to take her shirt off, Did she pull something on a cop so that they had to worry about her having a weapon ? was she 17 or 10 ? Did the girl have a name ?

If this 'independent reporter' didn't get any facts about the case then she's not much of a reporter. Just because you have a video camera and wrote an article for your blog linked to the Guardian doesn't make you a reliable source. If something DID happen to hurt these women, then give us some facts. Otherwise its a bunch of BS with potentially 'independent reporters' ginning up drama from the left does like the right wing does – paging Scooter Libby

Sorry there's a lot of context that needs to be added here and it does a disservice to Rawstory to be sensationalizing with that is at this moment potentially a bunch of crap.

  • texasaggie

Yeah, reporters. If you hadn't been torching those police cars and breaking windows, the police wouldn't have ripped off your press passes and beat the snot out of you. It's your own fault.

What a bunch of biologically processed cow feed! What the blazes does a bunch of people trashing downtown have to do with beating up on people who weren't anywhere near the area and were causing no problems? Why would the police even think of beating up on reporters who were recording police atrocities against nonviolent protesters? (The question kind of answers itself, doesn't it?)

Looks like we've started to export another product, police brutality and disregard for the law, to Canada. I hope that they pay for it to help our balance of trade.

  • texasaggie

Considering that these events described in the article were far from the scenes of destruction, it makes little sense to postulate that the people being abused were violent. The vast majority of the people arrested had no connection whatsoever to the damage being done downtown and the police don't even try to claim otherwise.

  • Eyeball_Kid

Hey! Why are you badmouthing US exports? At last the US can boast a manufacturing base, and YOU'VE got a problem with that?

  • ignatzfattis

Now we'll see if Canada's system really is more Just -or if this will just get swept under the rug like it would be here.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Union said

So are you FOR accountability for the protestors looting, burning and destroying of private property ? Or since they are a bunch of college jack-asses are we supposed to turn the other cheek and do nothing ? Again, this woman gives no FACTS about the who / what / why of everything so why can't I assume she's just a media whore ?

Nothing but a bunch of college-aged jackasses who are going to sell-out when they get to be 30 and sit there watching the food network and wax poetically about how they were 'nihilists'.

Again, love the rawstory and read it every day but I hate that they sensationalize crap like this.

If you go to the youtube link on here it says she's part of the “Alternative Media Organization” not a jounalist affiliated with the Guardian. I understand “Independent” can take on many forms but it also doesn't mean she's a real “Journalist” – if there is such a thing anymore.

    Aggie..

They were getting on buses after leaving the protests to go back to Montreal is what it said. Couldn't those people have been the ones torching downtown ? Don't you think the police could have followed them ?? Or maybe ..heaven forbid used their radios to call it in. Long and short of it, a whole lot of stuff we don't know because this woman is not a reporter and reported nothing about the FACTS ..which makes her a bad or non-existent reporter.

I know you aggies are kind of slow but try to keep up here….

Google: “The story of my unjust arrest” – Lacy MacAuley
    Lacy MacAuley.

Lets see… 20 thousand trained law enforcement officials, military and private security contractors, to account for well over one billion Canadian dollars. Securing the worlds most egregious scumbags and war criminals, from hearing any voices against them.

Surveillance cameras everywhere, not only recording to some dark server for later investigational uses, no these were being watched, aimed and zoomed. Tracking live views for the situational progression of a strategy to cause good reason for spending so much money.

It's without question, that majority of unanswered (no police response) violent damage to property, was indeed the work of the security apparatus insiders.

The police dropped several bait cars (for smashing and later for combustion) in the protest, then backed away – feed for the media frenzy.

The proof is in the footage from every angle. The fact that thousands of commando-clad, heavily armed police were 100% stood-down, to allow this cop car inferno photo Op to play on for the news cameras. Thus providing ample fuel for the mass abuse to ensue.

The strangest thing was hearing CNN refer to the black dressed agent provocateurs an “organized band of anarchists were smashing property”. And I thought real anarchists were anti organization. They certainly don't wear new black nike clothing – sporting clean pig shaven jar heads under brand new bandanas.

The only persons' who were a threat to the peace, were the ones dressed to kill, rape and crush people and their right to voice opinions.

Criminals are in charge. This can not stand!

There's a big gap between “excessive force” and “doing nothing” – like appropriate and proportional force. There's no excuse for force against people already in custody, except in self-defense if they attack you, which was not the case here.

His Son is OPP and was in charge of section in Toronto during G20 last weekend. Seems that Police Officers instigated confrontations so they would have control of protests. They even practiced their procedures for the past several months. First time OPP have ever done this. Everything is not all what is seems.

They get all disguised but it is often hard for them to not wear the shoes they are comfortable with. Photos anyone?

The object of a protest is to communicate and persuade the general public not to fight with the police. Police are humans and they react to fear just as much as you or I do. To fool with the police is a no win situation. The police in the USA and in Canada are the most powerful people in the country. They have been issued a gun and the right to kill with it under certain circumstances. A Judge, Prime minister, doctor, lawyer or Indian chief does not carry guns with the License (authorization) to kill only a policeman. A police man is the most powerful person in any country. Remember that next time you get pulled over for a traffic ticket and find a better way to get the truth out.

there usually is no such thing as “shoes issued by the police”. What officers choose to wear is up to them, and are commercially available to any protesters. There is a photo circulating of one of the guys who torched the car, he could easily be mistaken for a cop…

  • jimhadstate

You know, the world seems to be in the midst of this free fall toward a 'Dark Ages' or perhaps even a 'Stone Age'. When did it become acceptable behavior to issue rape threats to people, women or men, to those you hold in a vulnerable position? When did someone try to justify such behavior, regardless of who did what first (Faced with growing criticism, political leaders and Toronto police chief Bill Blair have been fighting back against accusations that the police response to a gang of black-clad anarchists setting police cars on fire and breaking windows was excessive.).
At some point, people who want to maintain our previous levels of sanity and civilized behavior have a right to demand swift justice, regardless of how inhumane it seems at the time. Anyone in a position of power with any kind of influence over the conduct or organization of this atrocity should be fired and criminally prosecuted on the basis of whatever evidence is available. The legal philosophy of “the hand of one is the hand of all” should apply here. If a single police officer is found criminally guilty of the behavior described in the film, then every person in the chain of command, all the way to the Prime Minister is guilty as well. They all had a hand in planning this fiasco and they all knew what the dangers were of releasing people on a group with only a description that they are the “Others” and that they are “Bad People” and only minimal guidance on how to react. It's called The Stanford Experiment and it has been publicly available for over 40, nearly 50, years now. If they haven't bothered to read it, then they deserve whatever maximum sentence a court can mete out.

How sad it is to see humanity nearly break from bondage only to return to it a century later. Digressing to Roman Era horror and dehumanization, or worse. We should now welcome a new empire: The Empire of Lies. A place where the ultra-rich and powerful, with Fascist Dictators in tow, have no need for free people. Not when they have a monetized force labor industry in China and other parts of the world. There is no need for people when they can be replaced by computers and machines. To them you are not a consumer, you are a useless eater.

There is a game afoot and the people are being played…

A billion dollars security tax. Yet, police allow the Black Bloc (Agent Provocateurs) to riot and rampage. Only 'till these Agents of the Crown have finished with their handy work, does the police come in to exact vengeance on the peaceful populace, caught in the middle of a treacherous plot. A brilliant psychological and strategic move these men, capable of convincing the very people sworn to protect the citizens, to turn around and cause those citizens great harm. Of course, this isn't an isolated event. It's happening globally.

Does this mean all hope is lost? Maybe, but just for now…

In the mean time. Don't you have corporate bought control freaks to vote out of office?

Yeah except there are hundreds of hours of video that show that the police NEVER targeted the vandals and ONLY targeted peaceful protesters. There is abundant evidence of Charter rights violations, and abundant evidence of the police unlawfully standing down when there was a violent mob breaking windows and burning police cars (decommissioned police cars with no equipment or plates.. wierd) It is ILLEGAL for the police to NOT stop a violent mob in this country whatever reasons they give, and if you simply watched some of the videos you would see that about a third of the people beaten and arrested were not even protesting, only trying to get to and from work or walking in their own neighborhoods.
