Hospital security ‘punches, tasers’ nephew of Clarence Thomas

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is reportedly “outraged” after security guards at a New Orleans-area hospital were accused of punching and tasing his epileptic nephew, a news report states.

Derek Thomas was admitted to West Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, Thursday, after a possible suicide attempt, reports ABC affiliate WGNO.

When the Supreme Court justice’s nephew refused to put on a hospital gown and said he wanted to leave the hospital, doctors ordered security to restrain him.

Security guards “punched him in his lip, pulled out more than a fistful of his dreadlocks and tasered him to restrain him,” a statement from Thomas’ family said.

Shortly afterwards, family members say, Thomas suffered a “massive epileptic seizure.”

The station reported that an “outraged” Justice Thomas is headed to Louisiana to look into his nephew’s condition.

Members of Derek Thomas’ family are trying to have him transferred to another hospital, but as of Friday afternoon, he was reportedly still a patient at West Jefferson.

    “Was he on drugs?”, spin? I think that the history of brutality at the hands of the police pretty much answers that question; it wouldn't matter one either way the police would still attack. Even if he was, last I checked, this did not justify abuse. Go Thomas, finally someone other then nobody USA is the victim of police brutality. Maybe, finally, this epidemic will get the attention so desperately needed. The cops are out of control and we the citizens are suffering for it.     Thomas hasn't spoken to his family in many many years. Thomas even dumped his own son for the rich world. He spoke about it in his book and has only a close selection of friends. He admitted he sees his dead mother and grandfather who aren't happen with his life. In other words Clarence Thomas is insane and is a puppet Justice for the Republican Party.

    Thomas' rulings have always affirmed the right of law enforcement, both public and private, to beat the crap out of black people as they see fit, with no redress for the victims.

    It's sad what happened to his nephew, but Clarence Thomas has been in need of a reality check since his early days when he first discovered how much hatred he felt for his fellow African Americans and what a sadistic delight he took in their suffering from the effects of institutional racism.

    I am sure that the staff exercised minimum force to control the young man. After all we must have order in our institutions and having a disability is not reason enough to depart from this order. Perhaps he would be better off at home, perhaps the family and friends can pass the plate or maybe trade some chickens for health care.

Years back when I tried to get a job as a Correctional Officer, we were told that we had to list all of our relatives who were or had served time. At the time, the CO telling us this said “you don't choose your family, so we don't blame you, but we do need to know abut them”.

    Spot on, spot on. Clarence thought that as long as he said the right things and looked the part he and his family would be safe from being labeled an ordinary African American causing trouble. But it shows that they didn't care or know how this kid was and did what happens all the time to minorities and also whites in the US. This is a clear cut example of what happens in a police state, eventually the forces that he protected and stood behind in his rulings will eventually come back on him. Today it was his nephew, tomorrow it may be him. All those fancy degrees and position doesn't mean anything, and he needs to know that. Here he is saying that he's outraged that this happened to his nephew but in much of his rulings against the small guy and for the police he didn't blink to say they where in the right.

    Welcome Uncle Thomas to the world that many of us live in. You just got a taste of you and your cohorts naive rulings, eventually you will see that history does repeat itself and that power unchecked is power unlimited (until something stops it that is much bigger).

    I didn't say the nephew was a psych patient. I used the term *psychiatric patient* as an example of why the ER staff may have been cautious. There are instances on record where a psych patient has injured medical staff before security could intervene. People with head injuries are often combative also.

    Any emergency room staff can tell you they have no idea what kind of medical case might come through their door.

The day when Nina Totenberg, Judiciary reporter for NPR, who was present for the speech, but was prevented from recording, recalled from memory the words of Sandra Day O'Connor, who was an active, vigorous part of the cabal that illegally put GWBush in office in 2000:

    It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, she said, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings.

    O'Connor was chafing at Cornyn's suggestion that judges being murdered was their own fault, a part of the Bush Legacy, in my view.

I already knew that hospitals can do absolutely anything, totally anything to a person and as long as the patient is under “treatment”, because there is no such thing as an illegal treatment.     If it had been someone completely unrelated to “Justice (sic)” Thomas, had the case come before him at the Supreme Court, he would have voted for the rights of the security guards and against his nephew. Just as right wing sickos like to say that a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged, this could just as easily have been a case of a liberal being a former conservative judge who had a relative unjustly assaulted by a couple of uniforms. It's all a pipe dream, of course. If Thomas' wife had been raped by a cop for running a red light, he would have voted to convict his wife for assault.

    The incident does, however, point to the value of empathy as a positive quality for a judge/justice to possess.

    Hospitals in some instances can restrain patients but by trained people, not by punching, pulling hair and certainly not by tasering.

    Many people of all colors have been inappropriately mistreated by “security officials” and law enforcementi at hospitals, peaceful protests, jails, etc.. Get over the outrage sir, we're supposed to, all in the name of homeland (in)security. You reap what you sow, and the despicable and outrageous actions by the Supreme Court have led to the deterioration of all sorts of civil rights, on his watch, have brought us to this point. Can't have it both ways.

    Me thinks there is way more to this story than is told. Unky Tom to the rescue (uh, read damage control, how convenient, and now we can watch ad nauseum as the race card plays out. Rule on……No sympathy for the devil here.

    Clarence Thomas's “outrage” is hypocritical! For years, the Supreme Court Judges REFUSED to engage in cases about excessive taser use. Most recently, in the Jesse Buckley case:

    This refusal to come up wiuth clear cut guidelines for taser use, and to go after violent officers, only encouraged the widespread abuse of that dangerous weapon! Clarence Thomas himself is one of those responsible for all the atrocities like the one on Derek Thomas.

    But, of course, there's a difference between tasering some poor guy, without power and good connections, and the nephew of a Supreme Court judge, right? D'oh.

However the HEADLINE of this story is CLARENCE THOMAS NEPHEW. SO we are not “ignoring the story” we are SPOT on the story. The story isnt that a black person was beat up by secuirty guards, it was that a Supreme Court Justice who has always defended the rights of the abusers is now suddenly outraged and shocked at the treatment of his own family, but when it comes before him in court he gives the police all the powers they ever dreamed of!     This is a two edged sword. While I totally disagree with the Jack Boot mentality of Police and Security Forces these days for their Para-Military mindset, I also realize that what comes around goes around, as was the case here. Thomas has always sided with the Neo-Con ilk in this Country, both Politically and Judicially. It's always the preemptive strike with either missles or tasers. I often tell the Jack Boot defenders that eventually when one of your own is victimized by some Steroid drunken Buffoon with a badge, you won't readily defend that action.
    Now Your Honor Thomas is “outraged”……? If so, maybe the next session in the Chambers of Just Us, he and his colleagues can ban this form of corporal punishment by the Tax payer funded thugs we call Law Enforcement. It often is the case, that the punishment is metted out before the accused even gets to court, and more often than not the infraction is something as irrelevant as a J walking ticket. That the Justice has condoned this behavior in the past is the Outrageous part.

    i got 5 bucks that he would have left washington for this even if the Court was in session. and really, its not like he actually DOES ANYTHING while he is there. he has not asked a question in cross examination in over 4 years. he drags his feet in getting his papers turned in (when he is in the minority) and makes loads of people wait weeks longer than they should have before his position papers are issued.

    but let's look at his history:

    Thomas was the only black person at his high school in Savannah, where he was an honor student. he then attended the lily-white College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts on a scholarship. while there, he led a walkout and the priests had to intervene to keep all of the black students from being expelled. Thomas later entered Yale Law School, where he was only an average student. he received a law degree in 1974

    CT was appointed (by a white guy) Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education. and then, President Ronald Reagan (another white guy) appointed Thomas Chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. and then, President George H. W. Bush (another white guy) nominated him for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. and then, HW Bush (same white guy) nominated Thomas to fill the seat on the United States Supreme Court being vacated by Thurgood Marshall

    but he was never given a fair shake by white people, especially conservatives. just ask him. he will tell you. and his white wife (and chair of the ultra conservative Heritage Foundation) will agree with him.

    Why was Clarence outraged? Thomas has generally sided with authorities in power in most instances when they treated people in this way. According to Wikipedia:

    In Hudson v. McMillian, a prisoner had been beaten, garnering a cracked lip, broken dental plate, loosened teeth, and cuts and bruises. Although these were not “serious injuries,” the Court believed, it held that “[t]he use of excessive physical force against a prisoner may constitute cruel and unusual punishment even though the inmate does not suffer serious injury.”[137] Dissenting, Thomas wrote that, in his view, “a use of force that causes only insignificant harm to a prisoner may be immoral, it may be tortious, it may be criminal, and it may even be remediable under other provisions of the Federal Constitution, but it is not 'cruel and unusual punishment.'

    Hopefully Thomas will learn from this experience and perhaps gain some insight into how his poor judgement has affected “the little guy”.

    The story says the man was admitted but does not say by whom. It's pretty clear that he was popped in the lip but otherwise it's still a developing story. He seemed to be together enough to know that an overnight stay was going to cost him 500$ and he didn't want to do it. They can't hold the guy hostage if his family wants him out so once again.     Watching the local video on this, it inferred that the hospital knew the nephew was epileptic and mentally ill, and perhaps had dealings with him before, and maybe not so pleasant ones. Much mental illness is now known to be biological and genetic. No need to speculate much on those implications.

    I have been on the wrong end of hospital “treatment', punishing me for asserting my rights and while they can do some good, they can do enormous harm and one must realize you are risking your life just walking through the door. You lose your “rights” at that point. If the security doesn't get you, the doctors, drugs and other hospital mistakes are likely to.

    Yes, tasering is dangerous and killing many, but who cares unless you are related to the elite and powerful. Again, a corporation created, marketed and defends it's safety, so it must be okay. Mr. Thomas's court (just can't bring myself to call him “The Honorable Justice”) just ruled essentially that corporations are people, In this country, if it's for sale it's safe, and we must allow the hospital/drug/police/military industrial complex to police itself, regulation and safety be damned. Liability and profit margin are the bottom line. Amerikan citizens are just lab rats, collateral damage and acceptable risk.

    Wake up, Mr. Thomas. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. And the reality he helped create does indeed bite.

    I'm a security guard at a local community hospital. Not knowing the facts, i must assume that
    this person was a danger to himself, or perhaps threatening the staff. He obviously needed medical attention, but he was belligerent. Usually, security guards can only use neutralizing force if attacked. They are not allowed to use overpowering force. That's what the police get called in to do. With a person struggling like that, bad things can happen. Without knowing all the facts leading up to the struggle, it's hard to say exactly what happened.
