Psychologists in the United States have been warned by their professional group not to take part in torturing detainees in U.S. custody.

Now the American Psychological Association has taken the unprecedented step of supporting an attempt to strip the license of a psychologist accused of overseeing the torture of a CIA detainee.

The APA has told a Texas licensing board in a letter mailed July 1 that the allegations against Dr. James Mitchell represent “patently unethical” actions inconsistent with the organization’s ethics guidelines.

If any psychologist who was a member of the APA were found to have committed the acts alleged against Mitchell, “he or she would be expelled from the APA membership,” according to the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press. APA spokeswoman Rhea Farberman confirmed its contents.

Involuntary commitment can be abused for political purposes, and this has apparently been the case inside the US at least once.

However, more famous, or perhaps notorious, of course, are Stalin’s deportations and commitment of dissidents to mental hospitals.

  • overdoneputaforkinit

All they have to do is invent a “treatment” that is torture, and everything is hunky-dory again. Just invent a diagnosis in which the treatment uses the same procedures which happens to look a lot like torture. Then send these “detainees” (don't call them prisoners!) to a special hospital (don't call it a prison!) that handles these special patients (not prisoners!).

“Mental Health” treatment is essentially interrogational. Read some of Thomas Szasz's latest work. He decries the “medical-interrogational” system, and they want to know intimately what is deep within you to “heal,” which is correctly spoken “to correct your wrongdoing,” whatever they find out in the course of what they call “the process.” I'm convinced that the American Psychological Association, and the American Psychiatric Association, are essentially government spy agencies, overlapping and intermeshing in their dual identites with all of our “Alphabet” agencies, they are one and the same. Goo goo g'joob, Mrs. Robinson.

  • Genessender

This is very suspect; the leaders of the APA have been CIA-affiliated for decades–check this out:
    http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/48108
Also known is that the CIA and others were warned before Zubaydah was tortured that he wasn't really in al Qaeda, but the CIA and Bushco tortured him anyway. ObamaCo is trying very hard to keep that information out of court (and Zubaydah buried at Gitmo) because it goes to the heart of Bushco/ObamaCo torture–if it's not to get the truth, what's it really for? http://www.fff.org/comment/com0903m.asp

Yes! Why APA, did it take so long? Explain that!

What a time and place to be at in history.

“Death Don't Have No Mercy”—Grateful Dead, I like Hot Tuna's version

Y' Know Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land
Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land, In This Land
Come To Your House, You Know He Don't Take Long
Look In Bed This Morning, Children Find Your Mother Gone.

I Said Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land.
Death Will Leave You Standing And Crying In This Land,
Death Will Leave You Standing And Crying In This Land, In This Land, Yeah!

Whoa! Come To Your House, Y' Know He Don't Stay Long,
Y' Look In Bed This Morning,
Children You Find That Your Brothers And Sisters Are Gone.
I Said Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land.

Death Will Go In Any Family In This Land.
Death Will Go In Any Family In This Land.
Come To Your House, you know he don't take long.
Look in the bed on the morning, Children Find That Your Family's Gone.

I Said Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land.
Death Will Leave You Standing And Crying In This Land,
In This Land. Whoa! Come To Your House,
Y' Know It Don't Stay Long, Y' Look In Bed This Morning,
Children Find That Your Brothers And Sisters Are Gone.

I Said Death Don't, Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land.

I'd like to get an explanation for how this sort of comment fits with the story. The only way this comment fits with the story is if dennycrane is performing the same sort of task that the criminal psychologists are accused of. Not that there aren't pages and pages of sensory overload, fear-mongering, antagonistic, head-cooking brain rot to be found. If you've got COMCAST triple-play, you can have this kind of torture coming in through multiple channels at once, the TV, internet, radio, streaming video, random phone calls, if you're willing to spring for the extra services you can afford the kind of media which perfectly simulates Guantanamo right in your very own home, sometimes whether you want it or not. Thanks dennycrane for being another part of our new national heritage.

  • farang

I doubt seriously that: 1. You understand how art imitates life, and/or vice versa, and 2. That you will ever hear The Grateful Dead playing on Comcast.

To compare the lifestyle, the ethos and brotherhood of Deadheads to “pages and pages of sensory overload, fear-mongering, antagonistic, head-cooking brain rot” is more an illustration of your lack of comprehension. Utter and complete lack.

But have a nice day anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/shivabeach Shiva

I understand exactly what Dennycrane is saying. And how it fits here, Maybe you should take a few hours and listen up to the Dead.

BTW Denny, Im still partial to the dead over Hot Tunas version. But I do own well over 50 hours of dead music so Im biased lol

  • dredd

The policy that engenders a loss of touch with reality is bound to dredge up some madness.

  • cohentelstar

I understand a lot of art imitates life and states “This is the way it is, this is the sad fact, death don't have no mercy,” etc. I've listened to a bit of Grateful Dead but haven't joined their cult, as I am a law-abiding person. Having read the torture story, then imagine hearing the song “Death don't have no mercy,” the song does not provide a remedy or relief for the situation, it only reinforces the negative facts mentioned in the story. After reading the story, I wouldn't want to be exposed to the song to further cement the negative reality in my mind.

  • cohentelstar

I actually do understand it, the meaning is not lost on me. After I read a story about torture, I'm not thrilled to read song lyrics that suggest “It's coming to your house next morning.”

  • johnniefavorite

What does I DeadHead say when the drugs wear off? … “this music sounds like shit”.
Just playin' … playin'. I like the Dead too.
Although, to be honest, my home turf is more'da funk shit. Sorry now I'm getting off topic.

By the way though, trust me, what ever you read about this torture, enhanced whatever bullshit, especially here and like MSNBC, is just that, bullshit. What is known as a, 'limited hangout'. What was really going on in our torture chambers is much much worse.

  • johnniefavorite

Methinks the negative reality is pretty much cemented outside your mind here. Yeah, I think it pretty much is.
Hey, that's why I sometimes forftfy myself with strong ales and whiskey.

  • cohentelstar

But don't forget the agents of misfortune who will use their scrutinizing scruples to shock you to the innards with their doomsaying, taking your liquor and taking your Kodachrome away as well. Kodachrome is a registered trademark of the Kodak, related to Eastman, as in Linda Eastman. There's always a peg-legged pirate who wants to take good things like that away.

  • mparker

Beheaded them like Nick Berg. Remember that video? Remember what he was wearing? Yeah, It was an orange Jump Suit like they had to wear at our torture prisons. The beheading happened after we started rounding up whole neighborhoods of people, men, women and children and torturing them. The torture was videotaped. Our Congressmen saw those videotapes and Bush had them destroyed before they could be made public.

  • tazdelaney

this is the typical misleading disinformation expected from the APA. for one thing it isn't the army's tech tehy use in tortures but teh MK Ultra tech developed by CIA spychiatrists in 1950. and in just 2007, the APA voted 72-28 to continue assisting the US in its nazi tortures, continuing under obama, who re-authorized the bush CIA rendition program of globally outsourced psy-ops tortures, gitmo is still open and we have a new larger gitmo at bagram AFB. also, while i'm uncertain if he is still the APA director, but the director in 2007 was also the owner of the airline company used to disappear the victims into their torture chambers.

there are fates worse than death… psy-ops is one of these. the list of all shrinks who have participated should be used to throw em all in prison and even those who voted for torture should do time… just like everyone in the chain of command or who voted for the wars and tortures should be in prison for war crimes.

at gitmo, at least 7 kids spent their entire teen years under torture from the ages of 11-12 on. the rendition program involves far more than gitmo's numbers. if 11 year old boys are a serious threat to the national security of the united states; the empire is already sunk. good riddance.

any shrink who has been involved in shock treatment should also be imprisoned. and while a few years ago i thought that barbarian ECT was a thing of the past, a new york times article showed that it is actually in more use than ever worldwide. here in nazi america, there have been 3 live-in child and adolescent clinics in which it has recently been exposed that they have long been using shock treatments as punishments and 'behaviour mod' on kids. some were found to have been given as many as 12-15 shock treatments of high power in a single night for having done water pranks! these are crimes of demonic degenerates, as bad as animal testers.

thank you so much for this reply. it's such a relief to see a wingnut get slamdunked — now if we could just get them waterboarded so they'd stfu for good and all starting with Hannity all the way down to the present characters.

Can America really afford to make even more completely justified enemies, when our enemies within destroy our education system and thus our economy with blinkered policies like those recently passed in Texas?

It's a sad day when professional organizations have no remaining recourse but to declare obeying the US government is prima facie unethical, but that's what it's come to, hasn't it. At least they had the guts to stand up to the goons, however briefly.

Mitchell is a pervert of the first order.

This deviate subscribes to the same ethical standards as Dr. Mengele.

Clearly, he was part of the conspiracy to engage in torture, and should be prosecuted for war crimes.

The solution is to gradually become free of societal rewards and learn how to substitute for them rewards that are under one’s own powers. This is not to say that we should abandon every goal endorsed by society; rather, it means that, in addition to or instead of the goals others use to bribe us with, we develop a set of our own.

    171. E-cigarettes are the greatest invention of the 21st century, so far. It’s sad to see that the W.H.O. is against them and the U.S. FDA are considering banning them. It isn’t because they are unsafe. Data shows that tobacco use is much worse. It’s because smoking is politically incorrect. Anything related to smoking will be balked at by politicians and lawmakers – worldwide. Also, the fact that some manufacturers and sellers are advertising them as a smoking cessation product (which they aren’t) is causing medical groups to scrutinize them. E-cigarettes need to be advertised as what they truly are – a tobacco alternative.
