As for the environmental toxicology of corexit and its constituents, there is one thing that can help us predict the fate and movement of these materials in the aquatic ecosystem.

A grad student or lab tech can find the octanol-water partition coefficient for the product itself and for the constituents individually. These coefficients are good first-cut predictors of the likelihood that a substance will bioconcentrate in living organisms and also whether it will biomagnify in the food web. The substance being tested is added to a quantity of octanol and water; where the majority of the substance ends up – in octanol or in the water portion – indicates the potential for bioconcentration. When a substance ends up in the water portion of the mix, the partition coefficient is low and thus, there is a lower relative chance the material will concentrate in organisms and increase up the food web. Conversely, when a substance moves to the octanol portion of the mixture, it indicates a higher relative chance that the substance will indeed build up in fish, wildlife and even humans and that concentrations will increase with increasing trophic levels.

In the case of the insecticide DDT, the octanol water partition coefficient was high and we know that DDT bioconcentrates and bioaccumulates in the environment. Conversely, a toxic substance such as the insecticide Carbaryl (SEVIN), does not partition into the octanol or “fat” side of the mix and this is reflected in a low bioconcentration potential.

For a substance like 1-butoxyethanol, a constituent of corexit, the octanol water partition coefficition is low yet it does raise toxicological concerns. As of 2005, the cancer-causing ability of this substance was still not fully assessed. According to U.S. EPA's integrated risk information system (IRIS) assessment of 2-butoxyethanol (EGBE) indicates that the human carcinogenic potential of EGBE cannot be determined at this time, but that “suggestive evidence” for cancer exists from laboratory animal studies (hemangiosarcoma of the liver in male mice and forestomach squamous cell papilloma or carcinoma in female mice).

Propylene glycol, another constituent of corexit, is used in a wide range of consumer products such as skin lotions and medicines. It helps substances move across the skin and into the body – exactly the type of thing that we don't want happening in the Gulf. In other words, even if a substance has a relatively low toxicity to marine life, the presence of propylene glycol may increase an organism's skin permeability thus allowing for substances to enter the body in greater amounts and in shorter times. These two characteristics of exposure can affect both the inherent toxicity and the environmental fate of a chemical pollutant.

I also am concerned about the interactions of petroleum distillates and crude oil with chlorine molecules in marine systems. Adding chlorine to substances increases their persistence and their likelihood of bioconcentrating.
