NY Times columnist: Fox News ‘exploited’ New Black Panther Party case

Fox News has gone too far in hyping 2008 case of alleged voter intimidation, according to one New York Times columnist.

The conservative news network has recently produced a flurry of reports about a case where a member of the New Black Panther Party is accused of wielding a billy club outside of a polling place in Philadelphia. Appearing on MSNBC Monday, The New York Times‘ Charles Blow called out the network for exploiting the case.

“I think that the media, depending on what you call the media, some parts of the media, I think have exploited this to a degree that the president of the New Black Panther Party is on Fox on a regular basis now, it seems,” Blow told MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski.

“You have a tough case here, because, to my understanding, we still don’t have any person who has come forward to make an official complaint that they have been — they were intimidated. You have a voter intimidation case with no intimidated voters,” he said.

No on-air personality has promoted the story more than Fox News’ Megyn Kelly.

Writing for The Atlantic, Dave Weigel accused Kelly’s reports of inciting a crowd at a town hall event hosted by California Democrat:

Watch her broadcasts and you become convinced that the New Black Panthers are a powerful group that hate white people and operate under the protection of Eric Holder’s DOJ. That “Megyn Kelly DESTROYS Kirsten Powers” video that I mentioned begins with her introducing a clip of a town hall meeting with Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Ca.) in which he gets an angry question about whether the DOJ has a policy of not prosecuting African-Americans.

“I am extremely sure that we do not have a policy at the Department of Justice of never prosecuting a black defendant.”

The crowd rises up. “Yes you do!” shouts one voter. When Sherman says he doesn’t know much about the Panther case, the crowd erupts in boos. They’ve been driven to fear and distrust of their DOJ by round-the-clock videos of one racist idiot brandishing a nightstick for a couple hours in 2008.

Congratulations, Megyn.

Also appearing on MSNBC Monday, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) suggested that the Obama administration may have a political motivation in ignoring the case.

“Congressman, what is your suspicion about why they are fearful to look into it?” asked MSNBC’s Willie Geist. “What are you suggesting?”

“I don’t know that I really ought to comment what it is,” replied Wolf. “I think there is politics involved, but I think until we see, it’s really hard — very difficult to say.”

But Blow disagreed. “The idea that the Obama administration, which is what is happening here which is people are trying to tie the Obama administration to black radicalism and that has been happening since the campaign and it continues to happen,” said Blow.

“It strains logic to think that this tiny group, [Obama] somehow benefits politically from protecting them,” Blow continued. “There’s nothing to gain. In fact, there’s everything to gain in prosecuting them.”

A former Bush ally seems to agree that the momentum behind the story is more about destroying the Obama administration. “This doesn’t have to do with the Black Panthers; this has to do with their fantasies about how they could use this issue to topple the [Obama] administration,” Abigail Thernstrom, former vice chairwoman of the US Commission on Civil Rights, told Politico.

This video is from MSNBC’s Morning Joe, broadcast July 19, 2010.

And this article should mention that the Bush administration chose not to pursue this case before Obama even took office, as pointed out by Keith Olbermann and others.

  • Dr.Matt

The mainstream media was already suckered once by Faux and their now bogus ACORN [non]-story. Hopefully the MSM has learned their lesson to ignore the whining Faux child in the corner because eventually it will tire itself, curl up in the fetal position, and go to sleep.

  • ARealAmerican2

For anybody that is “driven” by Fox “news” anywhere, I can only guess that it was a short drive. The people that watch Fox are already more than receptive to any right-wing propaganda that Fox throws their way. Can you imagine someone that watches Fox “news” for hours on end? The glazed eyes, the distant stare, the slight foaming of the mouth, the twisted thought patterns and the garbled gibberish escaping their lips? That's a scarier image than any slasher flick.

  • apocalypto

Why won't the MSM report on this RACIST teabagger video?? C'mon Raw!!

So does that mean you are receptive to any left-wing propaganda that the Left leaning Media throws you way? Fox NEWS Network obviously is doing something right when it gets the back up of the liberal Democrats! LOL Fox is blowing the competition out of the water and I for one am very glad!

Ummm yeah, the “New Black Panther Party” is not the Black Panther Party of Huey Newton. Ah, those were the days…

  • jamminjohn

It's the republican mantra of, “tell a lie enough times and people will believe it.” And it's working in spades. Fact is, the republicants don't even have to tell it twice: their true believers only need to be told once any more due to the thorough brainwashing fox noise pours on their empty heads daily.

it appears that when you go to work at Fox news you get an assignment. Glenn Beck got the assignment of speaking for God and misquoting Thomas Paine, Meghan Kelly got the job of making sure that the black panthers get as much publicity as possible. Mr. O'Reilly plays good cop bad cop, while Sean Hannity just lies and lies and lies

  • kasinca

Shocker: The fake cable news network FAUX made chit up and exploited it. Amazing.

  • AtlanticCapers

Only Republicans and other racists can see a black guy with a club and call him a “movement.”

  • AtlanticCapers

Proud to be Republican, proud to be stupid.

  • greg2009

This is a pattern Fox has utilized to scare old white people that have little contact with minorities. Fox has done this kind of thing for at least a decade.

  • winski

    SHE MADE IT UP !!!!

  • ARealAmerican2

I'm receptive to the truth wherever I find it and if you work at it instead of listening to spoon-fed garbage like Fox, you can find it. And why wouldn't Fox's irresponsible lies masquerading as news bother anyone who cared about his country and its fragile political system? Oh, and it's easy to cherry-pick your Bible verses.

“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” James 2:26

  • leathersmith

it was a walking stick, not a club

  • EmperorNorton

A black man standing outside of a black polling place in the aftermath of efforts to intimidate black voters into not voting? The word I'd use sounds like “protection”.

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

Nothing outlines the 'courageous nature' of republicans like the fact that most of the GOP was paralyzed with terror by a lone black man with a stick.

  • chrisinva

What do you EXPECT the NYT to say but deny, deny, deny? My congressman,Frank Wolf, is exactly right: If this were a **Bush**-administration intimidation episode, the Times (And Raw) would be screaming for justice, investigations, and impeachment trials.

Welcome to the enforced settled opinion of the Leftish media, which Raw ought to kick out to the curb. Mr. Blow's laughter is nervous and scared: is the Times losing control over defining who's the racist here?

Let's have a no-holds-barred view to investigating ALL crimes, regardless of the race and party of those who allegedly perpetrate them. This race favoritism is just so the day before yesterday.

As Al Gore once said to Bill Clinton, “Get with the G___-D___ Program!”

This “story” shows how something very dangerous happens: A hyped-up, loopy “story” from the Right wing media jumps the rails and is taken up by the Mainstream media. Mainstream media is now taking a lot of the fanatics from the right seriously and given them a platform, often unchallenged, and are giving their “stories” credence by covering them. The MSM is interested in confrontation, controversy and anything to fill the news cycle.

  • GunTotingLib

Please get some info from somewhere other then RW News.
    FACTS:
    * 2 black men , 1 with a small club stood outside of a polling place in a black neighborhood in Philly PA.
    * 3 white republican “poll watchers” from out side that precinct saw the two black men and contacted the DOJ and filed charges for voter intimidation.
    * The Bush DOJ investigated and 18 days BEFORE Obama took office dropped criminal charges, leaving the investigation open for civil crimes.
    * Over a year later NO ONE has come forward and claimed they were victims of voter intimidation from that couple hours those 2 men were there. Case is closed.

Voter intimation IS NOT a victimless crime. Someone has to have felt intimidated while voting for a crime to have happened. NO ONE has come forward to express intimidation. No crime occurred. The only ones that seemed to be intimidated were the 3 white republicans who there not to vote, but to watch the black people vote, because republicans KNOW how dishonest black people are . Move on.Using this race baiting to destroy a president is discussing and unamerican.

  • PeteWa

    god you're stupid.

none of you cowardly shitbags said 'boo' when the brooks brothers riots happened – a true case of voter intimidation, which was NOT covered by the MSM, not prosecuted by the Bush administration, nothing.

But you little coWardly pieces of shit crap your pants because two guys were hanging outside of a voting center while 'black'.

invest in Depends, you're going to need them.

boo hoo hoo hoo hoo. what a bunch of scaredy cats. why are they not embarrassed to show how terrified they are of melanin? very strange breed, these racists.

Fox News and republican right wing trash lie??

    Who knew??

  • motorfingaz

    AMEN AMEN and AMEN!!

  • motorfingaz

Were you born dumb and ignorant or did you evolve into the stupid cretin you are today?

While this case should be dismissed due to lack of evidence, I surely hope you aren’t claiming that the Black Panthers have been mischaracterized and are not, in fact, tremendously racist, because they are. Racism doesn’t solely reside with white people.

It's amazing to read all these juvenile comments. I guess many of you have joined the 'Red' team and just can't wait to take down the 'Blue' team. They feel the same about you. So childish. I hope many of you aren't kidding yourselves about what you are really about. You don't want TRUTH, FACT, or REASON. You want to win, at any cost.

Fact is there are racists everywhere. In this case, watch the video below and tell me what would happen if this occurred at a Tea Party rally.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3MbqupVxMY

But, you have to support the Red Team at all costs. Hope you got a jersey out of it.

I'll go see how the Blue Team is doing.

  • darin29

FOXNEWS? Invent a story, blow it out of proportion and then whine that the 'mainstreamers' aren't covering such a 'well-covered' story? I'm shocked. the teabaggers would be nothing without FOX blowing up the coverage of them early on in '09 and distorting their numbers. Five neoconfederate rednecks with anti-Obama signs and big white bellies show up on a street corner and FOX has 'breaking news'- America angry with Obama! Under Bush if you dissented you were asked to leave the country. With a black President you cannot even have a resolution asking for condemnation of 'racist elements' within a movement.

  • NonCompassionateLiberal

I live in Philadelphia. The polling place was located at Twelfth and Fairmount, formerly the Richard Allen Homes (of Bill Cosby fame) high-rise housing projects. You notice there are no Whites who have come forward to complain of intimidation? That's because there WEREN'T any. There are no white people living in that district (north Philly projects); therefore no white voters. In fact, the only reason a white person would dare go up there is to buy drugs. This is a non-issue. The right wing forever plays the “victim card.” Here they're grabbing a non-issue in their effort to prove how powerless they are in today's society. Let us weep.

  • jimthebeam

And to go to a source of serial lying such as Faux is no place to look for the truth.

  • jimthebeam

Some are proud to be fascist too. Wait, what do I mean by “too”? Oh, just another name for the same ideal. Lock step mentality. Look to the *strong* leader to show the way. Yell, scream, and never listen. Never have intellectually honest debate of the issues, and lack of tolerance…that is what you seem to be proud of.

  • luschnig

Fox News is acting like the modern American equivalent of Der Sturmer news magazine that relentlessly traded on racism seventy years ago.

  • chabuka

Of course as usualy FOX is lying, this voter intimidation “case” they are panicked over, saying Obama's A.G. wouldn't prosecute is a lie…..it was actually “dropped” while Bush was President and it was Bush's A.G. who wouldn't pursue it (because there was nothing there)… Obama was not the President at that time…but FOX, Ails and Murdoch have never let the facts get in the way of their reporting, fear mongering and Corporate agenda

  • motelcalifornia

When is the Republican Party going to accuse Democrats of being Father-Rapers???? LOL

  • RoadScholar

Oh, yes. Let's shed a tear for the poor persecuted white right-wing Christians. Nobody goes to bat for them. They have no friends in Government or in the Courts. It's amazing they make it to Church alive. Their rights are rapidly vanishing, and powerful brown-skinned and/or Muslim men have their boot-heels on the necks of these helpless white folks.

Wow… saying stuff that stupid makes my ears ring.

  • tootiredoftheright

Ah the criminal charges were dismissed because no one came forward complaining of voter intimitadition. The whole fuss was raised by three Republican poll watchers (notice no democrats) who weren't even assigned to that voting place. None of the poll watchers working at that place complained about the single New Black Panther member who wasn't even acting on behalf of his organization. His organization which is like 12 people or so actually said he was acting against their best interests by being there. Oh btw the Black Panthers have said they think the New Black Panthers are racist lunatics and they have nothing to do with them and wish they would stop using the name the New Black Panthers.

  • chester77

FOX is literally trying to divide this country further on purpose, again, this time racially. They are also distorting viewers' understanding of social dynamics, intentionally.

Right now I'm having trouble thinking of anything else I can hate more than FOX. This is a total outrage, even for them.

  • cireeric

And how is this different that MSNBC using the Tea Party to boost ratings.
