UPDATE: Raw Story has purchased carbon offsets from Terrapass, and is at this very second paying for the carbon produced by your reading this page. You can sleep easier tonight, and keep telling people about RawStory.com! -J

I’ve decided it’s time for us to do our part to ameliorate the coming climate catastrophe — but let’s please stop using the phrase “climate change.”

In an effort to offset carbon emissions produced by Raw Story and everyone who visits our site (our energy costs and yours), we will begin purchasing carbon credits through Terrapass.com.

Our offsets will include: our servers (energy costs), your computer (energy costs of time you spend reading our site), our work-from-home office utilities, our (rather limited) air travel, and any other associated energy expenses.

I’m sure you know why we’re worried about a world where the ocean rises, and hurricanes and typhoons consume entire cities. It’s already begun.

It’s actually gotten so bad that “the president of Maldives and his Cabinet wore scuba gear and used hand signals [last October] at an underwater meeting to highlight the threat climate change poses to the archipelago nation.” Countries are going to be underwater. More than 70 percent of the Earth’s population lives on coastal plains, and 11 of the planet’s 15 largest cities are on coastal estuaries. Global climate catastrophe is not a joke.

But this article just sent me over the edge:

ONE of the worlds largest oil companies broke its pledge to stop funding groups that promote scepticism about man-made climate change, it emerged late Sunday.

U.S. fuel giant ExxonMobil gave almost $US1.5 million last year to organisations that campaign against controls on greenhouse gas emissions.

Several made outspoken attacks on climate scientists at Britain’s University of East Anglia and argued their leaked e-mails showed the dangers of global warming had been grossly exaggerated.

The scientists were exonerated this month by an independent inquiry but groups funded by Exxon continued to attack them. The U.S.-based Media Research Centre, which received $50,000 last year from Exxon, called the inquiry a whitewash and condemned climate alarmists.

ExxonMobil isn’t just “one of the world’s largest oil companies.” ExxonMobil is the largest corporation in the world. (For the record — if it were a publicly traded company, the Pentagon would be the largest corporation in the world; the US military is the world’s single largest consumer of oil, much of which it continues to buy from BP.)

ExxonMobil is also the company that just had its damages reduced to $507.5 million for the — well — you remember this, right?

The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, when the Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker bound for Long Beach, California, struck Prince William Sound’s Bligh Reef and spilled 10.8 to 32 million US gallons (40.9 to 120 million litres, or 260,000 to 750,000 barrels) of crude oil. It is considered to be one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters ever to occur in history…

In the case of Baker v. Exxon, an Anchorage jury awarded $287 million for actual damages and $5 billion for punitive damages. The punitive damages amount was equal to a single year’s profit by Exxon at that time. To protect itself in case the judgment was affirmed, Exxon obtained a $4.8 billion credit line from J.P. Morgan & Co. This in turn gave J.P. Morgan the opportunity to create the first modern credit default swap in 1994, so that J.P. Morgan would not have to hold so much money in reserve (8% of the loan under Basel I) against the risk of Exxon’s default.

Meanwhile, Exxon appealed the ruling, and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the original judge, Russel Holland, to reduce the punitive damages. On December 6, 2002, the judge announced that he had reduced the damages to $4 billion, which he concluded was justified by the facts of the case and was not grossly excessive. Exxon appealed again and the case returned to court to be considered in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling in a similar case, which caused Judge Holland to increase the punitive damages to $4.5 billion, plus interest.

After more appeals, and oral arguments heard by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on January 27, 2006, the damages award was cut to $2.5 billion on December 22, 2006. The court cited recent Supreme Court rulings relative to limits on punitive damages.
Exxon appealed again. On May 23, 2007, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals denied ExxonMobil’s request for a third hearing and let stand its ruling that Exxon owes $2.5 billion in punitive damages. Exxon then appealed to the Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case. On February 27, 2008, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for 90 minutes [Emphasis mine]. Justice Samuel Alito, who at the time, owned between $100,000 and $250,000 in Exxon stock, recused himself from the case. In a decision issued June 25, 2008, Justice David Souter issued the judgment of the court, vacating the $2.5 billion award and remanding the case back to a lower court, finding that the damages were excessive with respect to maritime common law. Exxon’s actions were deemed “worse than negligent but less than malicious.”

The judgment limits punitive damages to the compensatory damages, which for this case were calculated as $507.5 million.

It’s time for a change. And Raw Story is going to do our part. We may not be able to stop driving, or turning on the lights, but we’re sure not going to stop trying to make a difference.

People actually encouraging scientific debate? How prehistoric!! Lets get this guy too!!

Nobel Prize-Winning Stanford U. Physicist Dr. Robert B. Laughlin: 'You can't find much actual global warming in present-day weather observations'

'Climate change is a matter of geologic time, something that the earth routinely does on its own without asking anyone's permission or explaining itself'

Why isn't RS going after Obama for the EXACT SAME REACTION to East Anglia's fraud?

Climate change? Does not the climate always change?
Is the planet setting warmer? So it seems. But all the planets are getting warmer, not just ours.

Climate change is a red herring.
Do I believe in climate change? Yes.
Do I believe in man made climate change? No.
I think smog is a bigger issue. (That is man made. But that is Carbon Monoxide not Carbon Dioxide)

Carbon credits ( cap and trade) = global tax to fund the banksters.

If CO2 were a real problem they would outlaw:
Beer, soda (any drink with fizz), Bread (anything made with yeast), hum… bet you can think of more stuff made with CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) .

Of and we would have an over abundance of plants. I do know about you but my house plants do not seem to be growing into monsters.

Fact is one volcano eruption can put out more more carbon than man does.

And waht about the toxic fumes from the BP oil spill?

  • ARealAmerican2

Exactly why do you oppose the vast majority of climate experts (97% by count of a Stanford/Toronto study) in their conclusions of made-made global warming? What compels you to take issue with these experts? What are your credentials? What part of their theory do you find wrong? And why?

  • gillaroo

The fraud is in your head, serial asshole.

  • gillaroo

    Another intellectual midget.

  • DougI

Buying carbon credits doesn't actually reduce any emissions. The money goes to a for-profit corporation which keeps some of the money then gives it to another for-profit corporation which uses it to offset the costs of programs they were already involved in.

The money would be better spent buying up more energy efficient office equipment and computer servers if the intent is to reduce your carbon emissions.

  • BrainRagYell

Who said it was a word? The first sentence says “the phrase.” Perhaps your comprehension became a bit dodgy getting from the top of the page to the bottom?

And are you referring to that which is half-man, half-bear, and half-pig?

    Excellent reference, but it's wrong.

Hahahaha . . . wtf? . . . this story makes me laugh;0) Go ahead waste your money on carbon credits. It will make zero difference on the greenhouse gases. We, as the ants on this planet, can not control/change the coming environmental changes. We are warming but so is every other planet in our solar system. One erupting volcano releases more gases than we create in our lifetime. The ocean, yes the ocean, releases the majority of carbon dioxide . . . and the weather changes are natural just like the jet streams moving toward the poles. It IS happening regardless of what we do and this carbon credit scam will further ruin our economy. Al Gore and the rest of the elites keep telling these lies about climate change being our fault and the idiot-Americans keep eating it up. Wake up . . . To see the farm is to leave it.

Always the excuse-giving rants from the GLOBAL WARMING denialists and buck-passers. Global warming as a phenomenon is happening. The 100 year record and the 40,000 year fossil records don't lie. Now, instead of everyone palming off this problem on somebody else or some goofily enhineered schemes like “carbon credits” etc., let's everyone do something OURSELVES. For instance, in my case, for the past 30 years I worked in environmental professions that created alternative energy technologies (geothermal, landfill gas-to energy) and to get there, I bicycle commuted, 40 miles a day, (200 a week), 9 plus months out of the year, the balance being public transit. In this, I conserved 35,000 gallons in gasoline and kept my own personal 235,000 pounds of greenhouse gases from our atmosphere. I stopped owning a car 3 years ago. WE as individuals have to do the energy offsets, NOT depend on someone else. You, who drive at every turn, use power boats and other gasoline powered things (lawn mowers, weedeaters etc) contribute. I see it every day, even when I am taking my kayak by trailer and bicycle the 5 miles to the lake to boat, I see hundreds of younger generation and people of all ages driving a short distance to river raft. C'mon! Get off your duffs, out of your cars and bicycle more! Cripes! We have to break the carbon loop altogether. I'm sick of all the finger pointing. Do something yourselves. No excuses.

  • merny1

I can't believe you guys are falling for the hype. I thought of you as being more discerning than that.

  • apocalypto

Perhaps you woke up late today. It said “word” earlier and they obviously changed it. You realize you aren't reading a stone tablet, right?

  • sandi2

I agree, Doug. Going “carbon neutral” does not mean buying “carbon credits”. It means actually reducing your carbon footprint in some real–not imaginary–way. It means taking a train to out of area meetings, supporting regrowth of forests financially or getting outside and planting trees yourself. It means campaigning against paper junk mail sent to our mailboxes and getting your news from the internet instead of a newspaper. It means getting rid of your hummer and buying a hybrid. It means carpooling. It means financing and supporting wind and solar power. It means really trying to end the wars (the biggest source of pollution today).

There are many ways of reducing your carbon footprint. Buying “carbon credits” is not one of them. It's merely a way for the rich to feel good about themselves while leaving the real saving of the planet to us–the masses who suffer the most from corporations exploiting the planet's resources.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Stritzinger/100000830165897 Kevin Stritzinger

“Balderdash” really . . . The fact is the IPCC can not prove anything. It's all false trends and speculation. The reality is their graphs were flaud by bad and now LOST data and the results were geared to show the results they wanted. Deal with it . . .

  • w000t

You can make these harebrained bare assertions all day long, but they're still bare assertions. How about some links to scientific papers in respected, peer reviewed journals that actually substantiate your ridiculous, scientifically challenged, lowbrow, crackpot machinations?

  • bickle2

So begin arrests. Terrorism threatening the national security of the United States. Seize the company and all its assetts and start operating at a “cover costs plus a little protection” model instead of a hundreds of billions in profit model. Arrest the entire board and all management and charge them with the same. If the shareholders protest, inform them their failure to act to stop the board from this activity consittutes aiding and abetting, and could hold them criminally liable

The only way to deal with an oil company is with a fist.

  • apocalypto

I take issue with their expertise in general. “Climate Scientist” is a new “discipline” that has sprung up since ManBearPig came on the scene where treehuggers that major in “environmental science” get billions to research this BS. Who really cares what the people who's whole lives hinge on this well-guarded data being REAL and not TOTALLY FABRICATED AS ADMITTED IN THE LEAKED EMAILS!!!! Look into it!!! The data is ALL COLLECTED AND DISTRIBUTED by these couple Climategate “scientists” who….conveniently lost decades of raw data.

As far as these guys at Stanford that did this study:

    one is a student
    http://skeptic.mensnewsdaily.com/2010/06/who-is…

the other is a professor of environmental sciences,Stephen H. Schneider, who has been part of NASA'S DECADES OF FRAUD ON THIS ISSUE…..AND I QUOTE:

“So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This 'double ethical bind' we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. “

And then there is Noble Prize Winner from STANFORD who says its all BS. But he's just a physicist and not an “environmental scientist”.

ANd how about this dumbass from crappy science school MIT:

““We do not understand the natural internal variability of climate change” is one of Lindzen's many heresies, along with such zingers as “the Arctic was as warm or warmer in 1940,” “the evidence so far suggests that the Greenland ice sheet is actually growing on average,” and “Alpine glaciers have been retreating since the early 19th century, and were advancing for several centuries before that. Since about 1970, many of the glaciers have stopped retreating and some are now advancing again. And, frankly, we don't know why.”

MIT's Alfred P. Sloan professor of meteorology Richard Lindzen

THE SCIENCE IS NOT SETTLED. PEOPLE ON YOUR SIDE OF THE ISSUE ARE JUMPING SHIP DAILY.

    Even AGW promoters:

The Atlantic's Clive Crook: 'The Penn State inquiry exonerating Michael Mann would be difficult to parody'

'Mann has brought in millions of dollars for the university through his research. For PSU to come to any other conclusion than that he acted appropriately would be an admission that the university has been fleecing those who gave the money'

This guy thinks you guys are full of it, and he didn't win the Noble Prize for a BS documentary based on a DEBUNKED graph:

Fallacy of affirming the consequent. Just because a proposed solution for AGW stinks, it doesn't mean that the problem is invalid.

Genetic fallacy/classical ad hominem: Rockefeller is a terrible person. Therefore, argument X made by, supported by, or originating from Rockefeller is terrible.

  • w000t

The paper asserting that 97% of climate scientists agrees that human activity contributes to climate change hails from the University of Chicago. There are other studies, such as as this, this, this and this.

Stephen H. Schneider's response to him being quoted out of context by people like you can be found in this publication. Look up “Don't Bet All Environmental Changes Are Beneficial”.

Then you go to Richard Lindzen, the darling of the global warming deniers, who switched from Democrat to Republican, advised Bush and writes columns for the WSJ. Oh, and the guy who thinks there is only a “weak link” between smoking and lung cancer.

Anyways, take, for example, this interesting interview with Lindzen:

Lindzen doesn't dispute that the planet has warmed up in the past three decades, but he argues that human-generated CO2 accounts for no more than 30 percent of this temperature rise.

There you have it. Lindzen believes that human generated CO2 is at least partially responsible for a temperature rise. You think you know Lindzen, but you don't. He's just a silly contrarian, who revels in the attention he gets by being an obstructionist ass.

Now take this quote, slightly back:
“In doing so, however, Lindzen is challenging the scientific establishment, which tends to sing in scary harmony about this issue. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an international scientific body,2,500 researchers strong, that weighs in on the planet's climate health every five years or so. Earlier this year, the IPCC rolled out a series of three massive documents asserting that global warming is an established fact and outlining where it all will lead.”

    TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED RESEARCHERS.

    SCIENTIFIC CONSENSUS.

On a sidenote, would you like to see another, more humorous form of scientific consensus?

Here's a list of scientists named “Steve” who reject that cantankerous, dimwitted, slush-brained pile of steaming Republican horseshit called “intelligent design”. That's right. Republican, because the large majority of the drooling, doddering dullards who believe in dangerous fairy tales, myths and other ridiculous, but dangerously ignorant bedtime stories are FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES.

  • pa4liberty

Maybe the editors and most of the readers of Raw can hold their breath to combat this global warming or climate change or global cooling or whatever they'll call it next. The science I know is based on consistent results not some computer projection from paid off government scientists.

  • Michmom

At least they are attempting to do SOMETHING which is a heck of a lot more than most are doing.

  • Michmom

    Excellent post!!

  • w000t

I take it that is a no.

I take it that means you didn't know what you were talking about, and there is no scientific basis for your delusions whatsoever.

Proper course of action would be to readjust your convictions. However, chances of this happening are minute, since ego-gratification is more important than evaluating the factuality of your belief system. It's better to come across all smart and sapient. Something to rave about in some helpless fool's ear at birthday parties. Good luck with that Kevin. But you won't grow old enough to see the global consequences of your viral, greedy, obtuse and narcissistic ignorance.

  • mike927583

  • w000t

How about Lindzen. Do you trust Lindzen? After all, you cited him in this thread.

“Lindzen doesn't dispute that the planet has warmed up in the past three decades, but he argues that human-generated CO2 accounts for no more than 30 percent of this temperature rise. “

Lindzen doesn't deny human activity and CO2 emissions influence the climate, and cause temperature changes. He just argues the percentage. Do you believe him?

  • Michmom

Not believing in Global Warming is like not believing in GRAVITY. It's there and it's been proven by people much smarter than myself and the 99.9% of the people posting here. Talk to someone who's physically been to the Anartic or South American and witnessed the effects of Global Warming. It's chilling (no pun intended). Of course, there are always skeptics but these are not the people who study it. You and I cannot understand all of the data because it is much too complex. I am luck to have a family member who is a specialist in climate changes and can explain it to me in basic terms. If people would just open their minds and stop listening to the talking points that keep getting repeated you might learn something.

Great, but nobody is going to do anything when they believe Fox News over credentialed scientists.

They're not going to believe AGW is real.
They're not going to believe 9/11 was a big cover-up
They're not going to believe Hitler, Mussolini and Franco were right wingers.
They're not going to believe that common people should get affordable health care.

They're not going to believe wars are fought for profit and natural resources.
They're not going to believe we are living an Orwellian nightmare NOW.

Somebody elsewhere in this thread just fucking lectured me about believing the mainstream media. Here's a good rule of thumb for you.

WHATEVER FOX NEWS SAYS, BELIEVE THE OPPOSITE AND YOU WILL BE WATCHING THE MOST RELIABLE NEWS CHANNEL IN HISTORY.

“In an effort to offset carbon emissions produced by Raw Story and everyone who visits our site (our energy costs and yours), we will begin purchasing carbon credits through Terrapass.com.”

Which means Raw Story will do next to nothing regarding climate change, peaking resources and overshoot-in-general as so-called “carbon offsets” are essentially useless (like all Left-in-name-only, feel-good “solutions”):

The inconvenient truth about the carbon offset industry:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/jun/…

As iconic, idealist inventor Saul Griffith recently, courageously and accurately observed:

“I know very few environmentalists whose heads aren't firmly up their ass. They are bold-facedly hypocritical, and I don't think the environmentalism movement as we've known it is tenable or will survive.”
    - The Inventor's Dilemma, The New Yorker (5/17/2010)

We live at the end of empire, during the century of contraction, in a culture of make believe.

We are not going to grow, consume, indebt and complicate our way out of the problems of growth, consumption, debt and complexity.

Finite Earth is a reality to be adapted to, not a problem to be solved.

We got everything we wanted and lost everything we needed.

  • w000t

Equating Al Gore with the scientific consensus on AGW, embodied by tens of thousands of climate scientists around the world, is committing a straw man fallacy.

    Construct:
A -> Al Gore supports AGW
    B -> Al gore is a liar
C -> Ergo, AGW is false

C does not follow from A and B.

Neither Obama nor Bush are doing anything substantial to counter AGW. In fact, Bush stampeded and perverted the scientific process so diligently that a new phenomenon emerged: “Bush Science”, a synonym for “political science”. You know, the type of crap spoonfed to millions via Fox News.

Fox News will pander to “conspiracy theories” as long as they support the status quo. One such conspiracy theory is the “socialist world domination” conspiracy theory. Another such conspiracy theory is the “global warming scam” conspiracy theory. Both heavily peddled by the likes of professional con artist Glenn Beck.

9/11 truth, however, will never make it past Glenn Beck's establishment filter. Certain reactionary forces have discovered the power of anti-authority sentiment about the internet generation and are frenetically abusing it for political gain. And so we are witnessing the dawn of a new age: government and special interest sponsored charlatans who coach self-anointed critical thinkers into a state of “excited knowinglessness”. They're exploiting the (healthy) suspicion of young and naive critical thinkers for their own game. They've caught on. You can't trust a POV anymore just because it's contrarian. You'll have to work really, really hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Currently the side of truth is losing. Losing to fucking Fox News, tapping into our base of anti-authority sentiment. Unbelievable. They've done it.

I didn't say Al Gore was a liar but he does enjoy a forceful “low” massages every once in a while from people other than his wife. He's just a business man looking to get richer. He is on track to become the world's first carbon billionaire if people like the editors of Raw Story keep giving him and the carbon trading industry money. It's a fiat industry that will collect money for world government, big banks, and parasitic corporations. How come these environmentalists don't scream about real environmental issues like GMO crops/animals that are starting to infect the world's DNA code making everything sterile?

  • http://www.facebook.com/jacquesg1 Jacques Graber

Then we just have uncontrolled carbon dioxide release with unburned hydrocarbons released into the atmoshere. Instead, kill your car…ride a bike…more.

One of the things we DO know about the CO2 in the air is that it also helps to reflect the suns rays back into space. If we reduce our CO2 levels dramatically, we may actually see a RISE in heat temperatures across the globe. Its a conundrum. I'm all for alternative energies, but you have to ask yourself in any given situation: “Who stands to gain from ____”? When there are as many billions of dollars to be made from whatever “oil alternative” we plan to use to power ourselves, (If there even IS something in mind yet) then things will [begin] to change. Until then, this is the oil game and we have to play it smart. The GOP is in favor of just killing the poor. Outright. And they're off to a good start. Suicides are WAY up, homelessness is on the rise dramatically, we continue to ruin the SouthEast over and over again and now in Arizona, its all the “Illegal's” fault. The elimination of the middle class is evident. Its not likely that the remaining poor people are going to have many controls at their disposal to reverse the planet's climate crisis. Big Business (like the ones John McNoBrain is all about, but likes to call them “small business” so we feel “good”) will soon be in ever increasing control of everything. And that includes continue to make CERTAIN that the US Consumer is ADDICTED to the intenet. For all the good that the internet has brought us in the past two decades, look at all the BAD that it has caused as well. The almost virtual elimination of the Phone company in its previous, wired form, the almost virtual elimination of the US Postal Service, Porn addiction has skyrocketed, people are far more reclusive than any time in our history, etc, etc. Cell phone, computers, computerized gadgetry, its like we've reduced our population back to elementary aged children who just play in their rooms all day. We need to look up from behind our computer screens and get back to living in our own world, back to reality. The planet is letting us know that its just about done tolerating our abuse and when it fights back, its in a PLANETARY scale, not in your office or bedroom behind your computer.

  • Badscorp

Maybe the scale is so slight right now that you've just missed it? What will be the cumulative effect down the road? Its not happening “right before my eyes”, so it must not be happening at all? I don't buy it. We know the glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate in modern history ( 15th century to present ) and all that water has to go somewhere. Are you aware of how large the oceans actually are? I think if you grasp the scale of that, you may find that oceans will rise dramatically some day, but whats worse is that we may be left with NO polar ice caps or glaciers at all. That will change the weather patterns, the gulf stream will cool, then heat up, the collateral damage will be far more reaching than your defense example supports.

  • w000t

    Frequently Asked Questions 5.1

    Is Sea Level Rising?

Yes, there is strong evidence that global sea level gradually
rose in the 20th century and is currently rising at an increased
rate, after a period of little change between AD 0 and AD 1900.
Sea level is projected to rise at an even greater rate in this century.
The two major causes of global sea level rise are thermal expansion
of the oceans (water expands as it warms) and the loss of
land-based ice due to increased melting.

Agreed. But when you live in a city (Phoenix, AZ) that was literally DESIGNED by Detroit Auto Manufacturer's when it was exploding in the 1950's its hard to do. The public transit system in Phoenix is virtually non existent and the scale of the construction over the past fifty years here is vastly oversized for human existence. You literally HAVE to have a car here and this is the 5th largest city in the US of A. You would almost have to level all 575 square miles of this city and start aaaallll over again. I'm all for just dropping a nuke on it, but thats just me. I'm heading back to my brother's farm in up state PA, no internet, no big city polution, honest farm work and fresh spring water from the ground. Cant wait. I hate PHOENIX!!!

  • Badscorp

Absolutely. And Fox somehow remains the largest single source of news in the USofA? That is really telling. No matter who you watch, Fox, Keith or Rachel, you are always going to side with and watch those who tell you what you want to hear. But remember, these people are PAID spokesmen and are really just reinforcing the political muscle of the network owners. I don't think that Glen Beck has a brain in his head, but look at all the money he's making off of spouting his mouth off. Makes you wonder how someone like that could actually make a living in the US doing what he does to get everyone all worked up that Socialism is Taking Over and soon we'll all be speaking German, etc, etc. This is what MOST of America Watches!! AND Believes!!! America has done itself a serious disservice by fracture politics of the Fox Noise brand.

  • Badscorp

Maybe so, but the POINT is that rather than trying to OFFSET this natural process, we are Seriously and I mean SERIOUSLY speeding it up, to our OWN demise. We can only hope to somehow slow down the rate at which we, as humans, contribute to this natural phenomenon. If you were driving down the road at 65mph and you saw an accident ahead that had stopped traffic. Are you going to step on the gas pedal? Because thats what we are doing as a global society.

  • w000t

“Global Warming is a total scam.”

One scandal, which I denounce as much as anyone, does not negate decades of climate research and a firm scientific consensus on climate change. I'm glad Climategate happened, because I strongly disapprove of scientific misconduct. However, much of the Climategate scandal has been blown out of proportion by deniers eager to glom onto anything that proves preconceived notions.

As I said earlier, not even vaunted climate skeptic Lindzen denies that human activity induced CO2 emissions influence the climate and global temperatures. He argues the percentage.

I'm thankful for these hackers for exposing wrongdoing. But skeptics haven't written any peer reviewed papers in any of the hundreds of journals that conclusively refute the current scientific opinion or consensus. And that is what you should be focusing on: the science.

The argument that all the temperature date worldwide has been falsified is completely baseless. The argument that all the climate scientists worldwide (this is not about the US, this about the worldwide community, who gives a damn about the US, or the UK, for that matter) are corrupt is completely without merit.

If you want to “educate” me, please do the following:
    (1) Point me to a large number of peer reviewed scientific papers refuting the already published peer reviewed scientific papers that support AGW
    (2) Prove to me that CO2 emissions have no effect on global temperature, linking to a scientific peer reviewed paper. (Related to 1)
    (3) Prove to me that all temperature measurements and all other scientific data (satellite imagery, ice samples, tree rings, CO2 measurements, et cetera) worldwide are fabrications.
    (4) Explain to me why Climategate is worse, in any way, than the large scale manipulation by the Bush administration and its oil company lobbyist “regulators” to obfuscate evidence for climate change.
    (5) Explain to me why this is no cause for concern.
    (6) Show me how all climate scientists worldwide are colluding in one gigantic conspiracy to fool us into believing a scientific fraud.

Climategate is a scandal. It shows scientists are prone to bias. It is by no means whatsoever a refutation of the scientific consensus. Promoting and amplifying this scandal beyond the much bigger scandal listed in (4) is a clear case of special pleading.

  • ladygeekIT

Well, anything that uses Fox, Alex Jones & James Imhofe, isn't exactly what I'd call “reliable sources” of anything. Imhofe is anti-everything and Brit Hume of Fox never knows what he's lying about. That's the problem with the Youtube clips and only 1 side of the question is covered. Global Warming is NOT a scam. The emails that were hacked came from only 1 university. How many universities are there in the US? Top rated universities get research money for all kinds of research. The University of Minnesota has one of the top agricultural experts in the US. Alot of research is going on there as far as how climate change will or is currently affecting the crops of farmers.

It's easiest if you cite sources when you make claims. Authoritative sources.

Furthermore, should you be able to provide such a source, does it constitute a trend reversal? If so, cite an authoritative source that supports your argument.

  • w000t

So you believe you should be able to see sea levels rising with the naked eye. Otherwise it's a “global scam”. That doesn't seem like a very reliable, scientific assessment to me.

  • w000t

The petition you referred to is explained here

A source lifted from that article shows how shaky the petition is. It takes a while to load, since it's from the WayBackMachine.

“Sorry pal … Again, this isn't a RightLeft issue. This is a matter of vested interests standing to gain or lose a shit load of money if the carbon tax does or does not go through.”

I firmly believe AGW is a scientific issue, and should be decided in that arena. Carbon tax is a political issue, and I disapprove of it. Now that is a scam, yes.

“So yes, i will focus on the science. What kind of scientists trash their raw data? Those who don't want their work peer reviewed by other scientists, thats who.”

I agree. It's disgusting. However there are alternatives, such as this and this and this and this and this…. should I go on?

Why would you bet on one horse, unless you were reasoning backwards from a predetermined conclusion?

  • w000t

By the way, you may also want to look at Global-average temperature data released.

  • MRAMERICA4U

This pretty much sums up the problem with the missing data, and why there is a problem with it.

  • w000t

For 50 years, you took a ruler with you when passing through a bridge? And you concluded from this, not taking statistical variance into account, that sea levels did not rise an average of 1.7mm or 0.0056' per year as stated in this paper?

    The paper also states:

“Global mean sea level has been rising. From 1961 to 2003, the average rate of sea level rise was 1.8 ± 0.5 mm yr–1. For the 20th century, the average rate was 1.7 ± 0.5mm yr–1, consistent with the TAR estimate of 1 to 2 mm yr– 1. There is high confidence that the rate of sea level rise has increased between the mid-19th and the mid-20th centuries.Sea level change is highly non-uniform spatially, and in some regions, rates are up to several times the global mean rise, while in other regions sea level is falling.”

    And:

There is evidence for an increase in the occurrence of extreme high water worldwide related to storm surges, and variations in extremes during this period are related to the rise in mean sea level and variations in regional climate.”

Yes, I believe scientists, including scientists who publish proper peer reviewed refutations. Such papers, should be desire to be taken seriously, are unlikely to include slipshod visual observations by skippers passing through bridges.

  • w000t

Interesting link. Thanks for sourcing. But, as I said, does it constitute a trend reversal?

    I think not. See this.

  • ComeOn1

Trend Reversal? Everything linking CO2 to global warming is suspect. So yeah, no trend reversal. Still suspect. For god sakes, the Sun has more of an impact on global (solar system as it turns out) warming if one cares to take a look. Also, what about the vast oceans and their influence on temperature? Huge quantities of Methane global warming gasses are hardly included in these studies. CO2 makes up such a tiny level of our atmosphere (less than 1/10 of 1%), its laughable to suggest that it has a huge influence on our weather. Govts around the world just want to be able to tax us humans for breathing. Also, if you take a closer look at the CO2 data, warm weather PROCEEDS CO2 increases by an average of 800 years. So its the other way around. Warm weather proceeds an increase of CO2 in the air. CO2 doesn't create warm weather. Finally, the earth's skies have an amazing ability to scrub itself clean. Following cataclysmic volcanic eruptions like Krakatoa, when it is said that the earth experienced a summer with no sun .. soon, thereafter, the skies cleansed it all away. Gee, imagine that. The Earth has a way of dealing with these things, even when they are far worse than this increase if this “global warming gas”, which comprises 1/10 of 1% of the air we breathe.

  • MRAMERICA4U

You believe payroll scientists,I'll believe facts.

  • w000t

I could swear there was a reply here by MrPunch too, but it seems to have vanished :-(

Let's take your arguments one by one.

    - Everything linking CO2 to global warming is suspect.

Well…this is a good summation of the general sentiment among climate change skeptics. It's also profoundly mistaken and internally contradictory, since variations in CO2 levels have always influenced earth's climate throughout earth's existence, and most skeptics don't even dispute it. Furthermore, CO2 is a greenhouse gas, so this is a very silly claim. Without CO2 in our atmosphere we'd all be dead.

    - The sun has more of an impact on global/solar system warming [ than climate change ]
Source? Because I have a source that claims:

“But the solar constant — the amount of sunlight received each second — is carefully monitored by spacecraft, and we know the Sun's output is much too steady to be changing the temperature of Pluto.”

    - What about the vast oceans and their influence on temperature?

I take it this means you haven't read the link I provided in the comment you responded to.

    - Huge quantities of Methane global warming gasses are hardly included in these studies.

Excuse my argument from incredulity, but I hardly believe this. There are also studies that include, or attempt to quantify the feedback effect caused by water vapor.

    - CO2 makes up such a tiny level of our atmosphere (less than 1/10 of 1%), its laughable to suggest that it has a huge influence on our weather.

Without CO2 in our atmosphere, tell me, what would happen? The quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere related to other atmospheric gases has no bearing on its key property of blocking reflected sunlight radiation. Don't you know this?

    - Govts around the world just want to be able to tax us humans for breathing.

Someday, maybe they will. We must prevent that from happening, by attacking the proposed “solutions” cobbled up by shysters.

    - Also, if you take a closer look at the CO2 data, warm weather PROCEEDS CO2 increases by an average of 800 years.

I'm not sure what you mean, but perhaps you're referring to this

    - The earth's skies have an amazing ability to scrub itself clean.

Thoughtless, coarse and careless as this claim may sound, let me borrow your argument to underscore that even that can show the impact of human activity on our climate.

There is NO consensus. The IPPC and the UN are able to build what they want, but limiting the view of the data, and then having one scientist work on just that piece. May take 1 minute to make a determination. He is then added as 'consensused', and that piece of work is then fed to the next scientist in the next room. There is no context here. There is only money, control of the planet, and agenda.

    P. O. Box 36
    Kaktovik, AK 99747-0036

RE: Arctic Offshore Energy Exploration Activities

    Dear Mr. Payne:

The Universal Intelligence Agency was established to provide quality intelligence services for the Exiled Republic of the Arctic, for the purpose of non-violent civil resistance against the hostile military occupation of the Arctic Homeland of the Inuit Peoples.

Specifically, the agency is organized in accordance with Section 404 of the Restatement of the Law, Third Restatement, Foreign Relations Law of the United States, concerning Universal Jurisdiction over Universal Offenses, hence the agency title Universal Intelligence.

Education should always be our top priority, in that regard, careful attention is directed on Nelson Mandela- “The educational policies of Apartheid is truly a crime against humanity.” And, as such, has been the very best academics has allowed Inuit Society, and qualify as Universal Offenses subject to Universal Jurisdiction.

    Stephen Lendman at Global Research Centre critically reviewed “Cracks in The Constitution” by Ferdinand Lundberg. Dr. Louis Henkin, Professor of Constitutional Law, reported in the Columbia Law Review; April 1979 “Rights: American and Human;

“Those wise men we now call the Constitutional Fathers came to Philadelphia under instructions to improve the Articles of Confederacy. But they went beyond their instructions, abandoned the Articles, and produced in its stead the United States Constitution.”

The U. S. Constitution was never the living document with legal enforceability as taught to us in Apartheid education. Technically, the sacred Constitution is in violation of the Great Law of Peace of the Iroquois Confederacy.

In view of the above facts, in particular, the illegality of the Constitution itself, equally careful attention is focused on the illegality of the 1867 Alaska Treaty of Cession; The transfer of the Charter of the Russian American Company and the legal description of real estate contained in the Kostlivzov Memorandum Descriptive which identified a total of 117,600 square feet of real estate, and not the territorial description of Alaska.

United Nations, General Assembly, Resolution 66(i). of 14 December 1946, posted Alaska on the list of Non-Self Governing Territories that placed specific international legal obligations on the United States to administer Alaska in accordance with Article 73 of the Charter of the United Nations.

Just as those wise men that abandoned the Articles of Confederacy earlier in history, the Charter of the U. N. was sacrificed in favor of the criminally contrived Statehood for Alaska.

The UN Convention on Non-Applicability of Statutory Limitations on War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity explicitly condemns as international crime the violations of political as well as economic rights of Indigenous peoples on the one hand and the policies of Apartheid on the other.

Paragraph 8 of the UN General Assembly Resolution on Principles of International Co-operation on the Detection, Arrest, Extradition and Punishment of Individuals Guilty of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity prohibits the U.S. from relying on any legislative or other measures that are prejudicial to the obligations assumed under these principles, specifically the Constitution, Alaska Treaty of Cession, Statehood as well as Alaska Native Claim Settlement Act.

The Education of Apartheid has completely deluded the whole of human society. The events of 9/11/01 further crippled an already permanently impaired mind…

The Honorable Chief Oren Lyons testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs in support of Senate Concurrent Resolution 76; 2 December 1987: Acknowledging The Iroquois Confederacy of Six Nations contribution in the development of the U. S. Constitution.

The Prophet called The Peacemaker… He was a spiritual being,
Fulfilling the mission of organizing warring nations into a con-
federation under the Great Law of Peace.
The principles of this law are: peace, equity and justice, and the
    power of the good minds.

The Peacemaker came to our lands, bringing the message of peace
supported by Hiyewatah. He began the great work of healing the
    twisted minds of men.

The great work of healing the twisted minds… of all humanity injured by Apartheid Education is further complicated by hydrocarbon on the brain, scientifically known to be extremely dangerous, and recklessly driving the political economy. More Arctic oil development only worsens our human condition.

The Energy Crisis is a criminal contrivance that the transnational energy companies use to rig the high price fix on oil, under the cover of the fog of war that is used to deliberately confuse criminal responsibility for war crimes and war profiteering.

NASA Climatologist Dr. James Hansen has called for the criminal prosecution of the industry executives for Crimes Against Humanity for corruption of data on climate change, the pernicious effects of this conduct poses dire consequences on the future security of all humanity.

In equal importance is the National Aeronautics Space Administration-National Academies of Sciences (NASA-NAS) Super Geomagnetic Solar Storm forecast for 12/21/12 that poses an even greater threat to the future existence of all humanity.

Interestingly, the forecast cross triangulates by technical reference with the most ancient of traditional knowledge in Mayan Astronomy and calendar system, Hopi Prophecy, and the more contemporary Nostradamus Quatrains and Edgar Cayce Sleep Readings.

The criminally contrived artificial energy crisis is complicating our need for advanced emergency preparedness unnecessarily. Exxon Valdez Tanker wreck revealed the non-existent emergency preparedness in violation of the lease and license agreement to operate the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System safely. The false safety recertification and Right-of-Way reauthorization are doomed to a repeat offense.

21 December 2012 is fast approaching leaving precious little time to prepare for the ultimate consequences that will result from the event horizon of the severe space weather event.

    N. Scott Momaday, Kiowa Historian and scholar, cited former Commissioner of Indian Affairs, John Collier in the Documentary Video More Than Bows and Arrows;

“What Humanity had, and lost, Native Americans have, and
are loosing, and must be returned less all humanity perishes.”

United we stand, divided we fall, one and all, so come on people, lets get on the ball in full service of justice for all, and not just for those who can afford it, namely the executives of the energy industry transnational corporate criminal cartel.

    Universal Intelligence Agency campaign for justice in the interest of all humanity for victims of crimes against all humanity… in the words of the song by Quincy Jones;

We Are The World:” after all we are saving our selves…”

    Sonny Boy Williamson; Help Me;

“You got to help me baby, cause if you don’t help me darlinʻ
I’ll have to find myself somebody else…”

In closing I cite Legendary Bluesman Taj Mahal- Take A Giant Step outside your mind… and think about what is being done to all humanity and particularly to the Inuit of Arctic Alaska who were compelled to pay for the energy crisis in advance through extinguishment of rights in pursuit of what is perceived as your energy crisis needs.

I trust that the message in this comment will be incorporated within the framework of traditional knowledge, for much great work remains, in the spirit of one love for life and liberty, we remain respectfully and humbly at your service.

Actually, “global climate change” is the preferred, scientifically-accurate term; the whole process consists not only of warming, but also of a cybernetic flux and rapid cooling – we’ll be extinct somewhere in the process, doesn’t matter where – the oceans will cool RAPIDLY due to the desalination of the oceans (freezing point increases), slowing of the oceans (change in density) and increasing temperatures of the oceans (thanks to the Mpemba effect).

Greenhouse gases (NOx, SOx, H20, Carbons) yield warming; particulate pollution yields an effect called ‘global dimming’ which actually offsets the warming but wreaks havoc on human respiratory systems. Decreasing particulate pollution in the atmosphere causes the greenhouse effect to go wild… leading to heatwaves in Europe that kill thousands (as in 2003). Decreasing greenhouse gases too rapidly leads to cooling as the particulate pollution remains… so it’s a balancing act. We need to decrease BOTH to bring the earth to balance and mitigate human effects.

And for those sceptical of climate change, the first human revolution–agriculture–turned the area once known as the “fertile crescent”, the “cradle of civilization” – Mesopotamia – into a desert.

  • w000t

Are you a member of the Center for Research in Applied Phrenology? I've heard it's an interesting field of research.

I've also heard that before joining the IPPC (the International Plant Protection Convention) scientists are required to dance the Ookie Wookie with Chewbacca, before bouncing around like a skippyball in order to remove all the engrams from the reactive mind. Then, in a last initiation ritual, applicants are requested to touch the tip of their nose with their tongue, touch their elbows together, kick their own crotch and subsequently stick their heads up their own asses. Then they're “made members”.

How do I know all this? Why, I have an anonymous source of course. Why don't you just believe what I tell you?

It's all about the money! If only you were to understand that oil companies who buy scientists do this because they care about the integrity of the scientific process. Don't look at the oil companies, look at the socialist NWO conspiracy.

The NWO is spending billions of dollars in research grants worldwide in order to perpetuate a quixotic myth. They've launched satellites for temperature monitoring, took samples from the ice in Antarctica, analyzed tree rings, measured CO2 absorption by the oceans, compared glacier photographs from sometimes a hundred years ago with more recent ones, analyzed changes in plant and animal life, programmed millions of lines of computer code, ran useless simulations on large clusters of supercomputers, so that they could frighten you into believing a lie. Never you mind the large scale obstruction and manipulation of climate science by, among others, oil lobbyist environment overseers appointed by the Bush administration. That was all part of a scheme to get you to accept the opposite later. Oil companies don't have a genuine interest in preventing us moving to alternative energy.

How do I know all this? Why, I have an anonymous source of course. Why don't you just believe what I tell you?

The biggest strength of my theory and the millions of jackboot licking rightists worldwide, is that I need to merely talk about proposed market mechanisms to deal with carbon emissions, which are just as retarded as any “free market regulation” idea. The aversion of rightists for “government intervention” into the economy will then substitute any meaningful scientific discussion. After all it's much more exciting to focus on intrigue and appeal to motive. People can feel smart at birthday parties without ever having to feel what it's like to study the philosophy of science all your life, collect data and investigate, apply the body of decades of knowledge and experience to interpret this data, and then to be shouted down by a no-good, nitwit a-hole who fancies himself a climate scientist after reading a few websites and who takes his marching orders from (how can it be!) both Fox News and Alex Jones at the same time.

What proof do I have for all my claims? Why, I have an anonymous source of course. And…let's not forget, e-mails from the University of East Anglia. After all, if I prove any wrongdoing there, I prove wrongdoing for EVERY SINGLE CLIMATE SCIENTIST on the planet. Furthermore, I will perpetuate the myth that East Anglia is the only lab who had “raw temperature data”. Musn't bore my acolytes with details. One shouldn't ruin a good story by 'facts'.

I can “accept” the differing views though. That's fine with me. After all, Fox is the network that provides us with “fair and balanced” news. Forget all the grotesque lies they've pumped into the ether for all these years. They're finally coming around to our side.

  • bioresearchpro

Certainly no shortage of ignorance amongst the commenters today. It never ceases to amaze how those who know the least are often the most vocal and aggressive critics of climate preservation. The US has become sharply polarized with those who are undereducated, uninformed, untraveled, and incapable of comprehending anything the least bit more scientific then boiling water on one side, and those who are reasonably well educated, literate, able to compose a compound sentence with proper grammar, and capable of understanding basic scientific principals, or at least in recognizing what constitutes a consensus amongst the scientific community, on the other side.

  • wial

because people who claim to believe in God take His name in vain when attacking those trying to keep His planet alive?

“payroll scientists” work for oil companies, not for underfunded climate research projects. Please try to get this through your head. Climate scientists are among the very brightest and bravest among us, facing up to a horde of wackos agitated by big money PR firms, and working for far less than they could get in many other fields, in order to save a planet that is covered with people probably not worth their salt. I for one, venerate their altruism and dedication to facing terrifying truths for the sake of the rest of us.

All Ihave to say is, Thank you!!!

  • w000t

In my mind, the issue is very simple.

    (A) Is CO2 a greenhouse gas?
    (B) If (A) is true, and an increase of CO2 in the atmosphere causes additional warming, should we be working to limit our CO2 emissions?

    Yes, and yes.

Instead, skeptics seem to want to focus on whether or not it can be conclusively proven that human activity induced CO2 emissions are the primary reason for climate change.

But you see, I don't care if it's the primary reason, even though scientific consensus opines that it is. Indisputable fact is that it is certainly one of the reasons.

Therefore, we must invariably do our part to take our own contribution to global warming out of the equation. This is motivated by an obscure phenomenon called “taking responsibility”.

Do I believe Cap & Trade is the right way to go about it? Absolutely not.

These simple facts seem to be unable to penetrate the mind of the climate skeptic. Want to debate the amount of human influence on climate change? Fine. Want to infect the mind of helpless internet surfers with fallacious super bullshit such as “carbon molecules are the building blocks of life, therefore more CO2 in the atmosphere is beneficial to the ecosystem” or “If CO2 makes up so little of the total atmosphere, how can it even effect the climate”? Get the f— out of here. And yes, there actually are idiots who make these claims without blushing.

  • ComeOn1

Shit, water vapor is a much larger green house gas than C02. Its just the governments and oil companies of the world can't make a penny of of us by trying to charge us for water vapor. Your faux scientific reasoning seems so airtight in your little make believe theorem, but CO2 amounts to 1/10 or 1% of our environment. To say that skeptics have absolutely no data to debunk your paid-for-and-thoroughly-descrideted “scientists” conclusions shows an utter lack of knowledge to this global warming sham.

  • ComeOn1

A common charge leveled against global warming skeptics is that they are on the payroll of transnational oil companies, when in fact the opposite is true, oil companies are amongst the biggest promoters of climate change propaganda, emphasized recently by Exxon Mobil’s call for a global carbon tax.
According to Exxon Mobil chief executive Rex Tillerson, the cap and trade nightmare being primed for passage in the Senate doesn’t go far enough – Tillerson wants a direct tax on carbon dioxide emissions, essentially a tax on breathing since we all exhale this life-giving gas.

  • ComeOn1

Hi, Perhaps you can pay someone to clean up the persistent toxic compounds released by the manufacturing process used to make the servers and computers.

These toxic compounds are responsible for the rise of cancer in the West, hermaphrodite frogs and massive health problems in China hwere, the chemicals are disposed.

These compounds are actual poisons unlike CO2 and represent a much greater threat to the ecosystem than some extra plant food

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Kessler/1847633349 John Kessler

There are many sources for CO2, but you can generally place them into one of two categories.

First are what I think of as short cycle sources like us. Yes, when we breath we exhale CO2. But we also take in carbon and store some of it. Same for trees. They take in carbon from the air but if you burn one it puts that carbon back. Generally this is a relatively balanced system where carbon goes in and out at about the same levels.

The problem is in the second long cycle source. Millions of years ago the earth's atmosphere contained much more CO2 then it does today and the plant life of that time thrived on it. Those plants took in all that carbon, stored it, and died. The dead plants and all that carbon piled up and eventually became coal and oil, locked up deep within the earth. The result was the atmosphere ended up with much less carbon dioxide, making it more hospitable to us.

Burning large amounts of oil and coal releases that ancient carbon back into the atmosphere, returning us back towards those ancient conditions. Future plants will be happy we did that, but current life will not be.

Were you that afraid to mention your source, because you knew it wasn't reliable?

Nevermind, let's play along. Here's a paragraph from the same article you forgot to include:

Exxon Mobil and their ilk are not concerned about a carbon tax eating into their profits because they know they won’t have to pay it – the tab will be picked up by the ignorant taxpayer at the fuel pump at an inflated cost which if anything will hand the transnational oil cartels an even bigger cut.”

    Cough.

  • w000t

Is CO2 toxic? Yes, it can be.

But that's besides the point. The problem at issue is the influence CO2 has on the climate, and our role in exasperating that influence.

  • pinroot

It's simple to the simple minded out there. If CO2 isn't the primary cause of climate change (not global warming) then the question is “What is the primary cause?” And can we do anything about it? Since that big bright thing in the sky has the biggest influence on the climate, and there's not too much we can do about that big bright thing in the sky, we might as well sit back and enjoy the interglacial.

  • pinroot

Hey Raw Story, why don't you do something useful with your money instead of buying bogus, feel-good carbon credits? If I buy some, does that mean I can go start a tire fire and feel smug about it because I know I've purchased penance from an approved source?

  • MRAMERICA4U

Do you have a point or just letting everyone know you believe greedy corporations?

  • wyrdless

Sure CO2 “can” be toxic just like H2O “can” be toxic if you have to much
    distilled water.

My only point is that i am more concerned about getting cancer from all the
poison in the air and water than I am of the world getting warmer.

  • w000t

Bravo. You've managed to integrate global dimming into your plea. You must known then, too, what happened on 9/11 when all the planes landed. Great comment. Are you a climate scientist? If not, you should be ;-)

  • w000t

Yeah, H2O can be toxic simply because of osmosis. But I don't think it necessarily has to be distilled. You can get there with tap water too. It happened with student initiation rituals here, when they were forbidden to do it with vodka, they did it with water… and one of the new fish suffered an epileptic stroke after drinking liters and liters of water.

  • ComeOn1

First, there is no such consensus: An increasing number of climate scientists are raising serious questions about the political rush to judgment on this issue. For example, the widely touted “consensus” of 2,500 scientists on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an illusion: Most of the panelists have no scientific qualifications, and many of the others object to some part of the IPCC's report. The Associated Press reported recently that only 52 climate scientists contributed to the report's “Summary for Policymakers.”

Likewise, only about a dozen members of the governing board voted on the “consensus statement” on climate change by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Rank and file AMS scientists never had a say, which is why so many of them are now openly rebelling. Estimates of skepticism within the AMS regarding man-made global warming are well over 50 percent.

    http://www.isil.org/global-warming-file/man-mad…

  • w000t

Okay, but you must have missed the part where I said:

“I don't care if it's the primary reason, even though scientific consensus opines that it is.”

My point is not that climate change isn't primarily caused by human activity. My point is that ultimately, I don't even care. Even if it wasn't the primary cause, we would still have to do something about it.

That was my point….and I was making it to show how little elbow room there is for deniers.

The sun's light intensity is measured by spacecraft, and is constant. The sun, currently, isn't the cause of climate change.

I realize that the internet offers an endless supply of people to “debate”. I can only do so much to pound it home that climate change deniers need to make a better case, and educate people about journalistic and scientific standards. I won't attempt to whitewash Climategate as many fervent AGW supports might. But I certainly won't mischaracterize it as the nail in the coffin. Nuance is conspicuously absent. I'm immersed in the “conspiracy crowd” myself. I consider myself a student, primarily, of assassinations, terrorist attacks, and war incidents. I know the cognitive and scholarly cul-de-sacs that impede proper assessment of fact and history. To see “my base” fuck up so definitively under the toxic traineeship of sensationalist, money-grubbing charlatans like Alex Jones is depressing. There are people out there who go many steps beyond the level of “talk radio” and fancy documentaries, digging out sources, books, documents, papers, historical records, the whole shebang. And for what? The louder you scream, the larger your following. I'm not with that anymore. The truth and nothing but the truth, or may the heavens fall.

At least, as far I can correctly observe. You are clearly employing a double standard with your remarks about mainstream media, because the very climate skeptic documentary trailer you pointed me to, relies in abundance on the very same mainstream media sources you say have a pro climate change agenda. Do you agree?

Let's move on to the article you linked me to. It's very interesting indeed.

Confronted with a sharp change of priorities in Washington, international oil executives are expressing an eagerness to work with President Obama to fashion new policies to tackle global warming.

    (…)

“At an industry conference here this week, the executives struck a conciliatory tone on how to limit the emissions that are contributing to climate change.”

    (…)

“Almost all of them seemed reconciled to the United States’ adopting some kind of climate policy”

    (…)

“President Obama comes to office with a strong commitment to tackle climate change,” said Tony Hayward, the chief executive of BP. “Suddenly the challenges many of us have been wrestling with for a long time — the importance of energy security in providing economic security, and tackling the issue of climate change in a way that is commercially viable — are center stage.”

    (…)

Mr. Obama (…) made energy and environmental policy a cornerstone of both his national security and economic efforts.

    (…)

Exxon Mobil, which had long been skeptical of global warming, offered its own suggestions.”

    (…)

A carbon tax reduces policy risks for businesses and investors in a way that cap-and-trade schemes do not,” Mr. Dolan said

    (…)

Jeroen van der Veer, chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell, said the key was to assign a cost to carbon. “I don’t lose any sleep if the United States or anyone else gets a carbon tax,” Mr. van der Veer said. “The world is helped by pricing carbon dioxide, whichever way you do it.”

    (…)

“We’re moving into a new era of policy making that will have very important and far-reaching implications for energy markets.”

You have helped me tremendously in proving my point, namely, that not the NWO, but a change of the guard in the White House is responsible for the about-face of most oil companies. Before that, as the article emphatically indicates, Exxon was AGAINST anthropogenic climate change.

As for van der Veer, I can help you with his state of mind: in the Netherlands, everybody has traditionally been very pro-environment, in words if not in deeds. This is not in the least because of Holland's long and troubled relationship with the sea, the large rivers, lakes and canals. Van der Veer comes from a totally different culture where essentially everything revolves around water and environment, since the Netherlands resides largely below sea level.

And as for your comment about Wikipedia: yes, Wikipedia has its flaws, but it has a clear policy on reliable sources, and when I cite an article, I expect you to follow the trail back to those sources. I do. Many peer reviewed articles and authoritative commentaries are linked from Wikipedia. This is no different from many of the sources cited in the documentary trailer you linked me to. Their job is to report the news. The problems with mainstream media are very complex, and frankly claiming none of the mainstream media can be trusted at all is rank hypocrisy, considering the copious amount of mainstream media sourcing in the work of most activists, such as you and me.

I have personally have specific issues with Fox News, and they have been amply documented. But that is a different discussion.

    I see.

“Minutes before midnight on Aug. 21, 1986, roughly one cubic kilometer of gaseous carbon dioxide escaped into the atmosphere from the floor of Lake Nyos in the hilly jungle terrain of western Africa. The plume looked like a white cloud as it spilled out of the lake and rolled into surrounding valleys. By sunrise, more than 1,700 people and 3,200 animals had died of asphyxiation.

Are you a professional idiot or just a hobbyist? Don't answer that.

And please note, the article you cite admits AGW exists, but argues the amount of influence it has. Do you concur with the author of the article on this point? If so, progress has been made, for which we can all be thankful.

  • Badscorp

No, I'm in full agreement with the end results supported by the currently known scientific data. The fact that CO2 assists in reflecting sunlight is a known fact. The severety is up for discussion. I think you misunderstood.

(…) in the jargon of climate science, water vapour is a feedback, but not a forcing.

As to your 1% argument, without going into the precise amount relative to other gases in the atmosphere, let me repeat my earlier statement to you:

The quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere related to other atmospheric gases has no bearing on its key property of blocking reflected sunlight radiation. Don't you know this?

“To say that skeptics have absolutely no data to debunk your paid-for-and-thoroughly-descrideted “scientists” conclusions shows an utter lack of knowledge to this global warming sham.”

I vill zay zis, only wants.

“The public story is that unless we reduce our emissions of CO2, the world will drown in rising seas, the arctic caps will melt, species go extinct and we will slowly cook to death.”

Hyperbolic straw man, especially the last point. Here is a more realistic scenario. And yes, climate change will effect the economy.

“While writing this, let’s keep it to layman terms that can be easily understood, potentially sacrificing a tiny bit of accuracy for ease of understanding and clarity of the message for all the non-scientists among us, and while I will be happy to answer relevant questions, I would ask that those that intend to, or wants to end up in endless and possibly pointless but time-wasting discussions about nitty-gritty irrelevant details, don’t.”

Aha. So… the author, Chris Sprucefield, (who?) positions himself as a scientist. I haven't been to verify in what field mr. Sprucefield specializes. I have found a few articles on Google Scholar, which may refer to him, but they appear to list him as a computer security specialist. I'm glad though, that mr. Sprucefield is dumbing it all down for the plebiscite. We are allowed to ask him questions, so long as they aren't detailed.

“While we can keep talking big and absolute numbers like giga-tons of carbon, this doesn’t help understanding, so let’s keep to smaller and more understandable units like percentages, and where appropriate for comparison, ppm’s (parts per millions), and even if there will be small rounding errors introduced, they will still be for practical purposes correct when related to each other.”

I'm not sure why it wouldn't help understanding. I'm not sure why percentages and ppm's are by definition “more understandable”. I'm confident mr. Sprucefield knows best how to guide us mere mortals through this labyrinth of climate science, though.

    The true facts are:

Yes, CO2 IS a greenhouse gas, and Yes, it DOES reflect some of the infrared radiation, stopping it from being irradiated into space, but this is not the whole story, and it certainly will not get twice as bad if we double the CO2 in the atmosphere, as the UN IPCC, the climate scientists and the climate alarmists claim.”

Wow. Chris says CO2 is a greenhouse gas! It does reflect radiation! Shall we stop here, since most climate deniers can't even bring themselves to admit this fact? Hmmm, perhaps we should continue, because this is getting rather interesting. CO2 a greenhouse gas, who would have thought! I'm starting to enjoy this article. Good form!

“CO2 is often referred to as “the gas of life”, and we all get taught in school that CO2 is used and depended upon by the plants for their photosynthesis, so could this really be so bad?”

    Wah-wah-wah-waaaaah.

I could pin down the exact logical fallacy commited here, but I won't. That logical fallacy is like a personal treasure and I'm keeping it to myself.

Anyways, how did that “gas of life” work out for Joseph Nkwain from Subum?

“I could not speak. I became unconscious. I could not open my mouth because then I smelled something terrible . . . I heard my daughter snoring in a terrible way, very abnormal . . . When crossing to my daughter's bed . . . I collapsed and fell. I was there till nine o'clock in the (Friday) morning . . . until a friend of mine came and knocked at my door . . . I was surprised to see that my trousers were red, had some stains like honey. I saw some . . . starchy mess on my body. My arms had some wounds . . . I didn't really know how I got these wounds . . .I opened the door . . . I wanted to speak, my breath would not come out . . . My daughter was already dead . . . I went into my daughter's bed, thinking that she was still sleeping. I slept till it was 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon . . . on Friday. (Then) I managed to go over to my neighbors' houses. They were all dead . . . I decided to leave . . . . (because) most of my family was in Wum . . . I got my motorcycle . . . A friend whose father had died left with me (for) Wum . . . As I rode . . . through Nyos I didn't see any sign of any living thing . . . (When I got to Wum), I was unable to walk, even to talk . . . my body was completely weak.”

Not that has a rip of an ass to do with the fact that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, of course, but anyways. Oops. I just let one slip. Some more “gas of life”.

On what adventure will the prolific mr. Sprucefield take us next? I can hardly wait!

“The AGW proponents repeatedly claims [sic] that if we double the amount of CO2, we will see as much as 6 degrees increase in temeparture [sic] on earth, and therefore, we need to stop our emissions and possibly even remove existing CO2 in the atmosphere, before it is too late.

On the other hand, the hard science on this subject, shows something completely different, science that has been around for decades and that are equally well-proven as old, science that is conveniently ignored by IPCC and the climate scientists, as accepting these well-proven facts would instantly kill their claims about the CO2’s rampant effects stone dead.”

Hmm, I thought we went over this already.

Too bad mr. Sprucefield, our self-anointed climate scientist overlord, doesn't cite any peer reviewed scientific papers to back up his claims. Oh, how easy life would be! So far, we just have to take his word for it, that “well-proven facts would instantly kill their claims”. Cool. Confidence is everything.

“The first 20ppm of CO2, stands for almost all of the effect of CO2.
The next 20 ppm, stands for an additional effect equal to about 1/5 of the first 20ppm, and it keeps falling very quickly.

Even if you doubled the amount of CO2 from todays [sic] level, to the projected 800-1000ppm in the catastrophy [sic] scenario of IPCC, the combined effect of the additional 400-600ppm CO2 in the atmosphere would amount to no more than approximately 1% of the total effect from the current CO2.

1% additional effect from increasing the amount of CO2 five (5) times in the atmosphere.

See for yourselves in the chart below, how increase of CO2 relates to global warming.

The absorption rate of CO2 is indeed logarithmic. However, this part of the story is left out:

“CO2 climate sensitivity has a component directly due to radiative forcing by CO2 (or any other change in Earth's radiative balance), and a further contribution arising from feedbacks, positive and negative. “Without any feedbacks, a doubling of CO2 (which amounts to a forcing of 3.7 W/m2) would result in 1°C global warming, which is easy to calculate and is undisputed. The remaining uncertainty is due entirely to feedbacks in the system, namely, the water vapor feedback, the ice-albedo feedback, the cloud feedback, and the lapse rate feedback” [6]; addition of these feedbacks leads to a value of approximately 3 oC.”

This could go on and on… but I think you get the point.

I thank you, at least, for teaching me this (quantum physics <-> causality), but the gist of it is, ComeOn1's argument is flawed because the relationship between atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature is bidirectional.

  • ComeOn1

Yes you are so right. C02 has nothing to do with Global Warming either way. Thanks for setting me straight. Oh, and if the sun rises in the morning, then the morning is not dependent upon the sun coming up first. Thanks for being too clever by half.

    Fred Singer? You're kidding me

    I'm forced to repeat myself.

The paper asserting that 97% of climate scientists agree that human activity contributes to climate change hails from the University of Illinois at Chicago. There are other studies, such as as this, this, this and this.

so you use the talking points the corporate cons give you to demonstrate your position. real smart, Maxwell.

  • ComeOn1

Omg, you buy their reasoning? Your certainly are awfully naiive for someone who is so consistently patronizing. Pointing me to compromised sources who are paid to come up with Global Warming data is hardly objective. It seems I cannot help you. Enjoy the death of this nation via Barr Soetoro. Nothing happens in this world (especially in the world of politics) that doesn't have a financial reward attached to it. I noticed you didn't bring up the 32,000 scientists who are suing Al Gore over the Global Warming Hoax, or how the IPCC is run by non-scientists who have their Billion $$$ agenda to uphold. To say that Global Warming science is settled and that there is no longer any cause for debate is laughable and proves your disinterest in the scientific method. Science is never settled. Especially when the Global Warmers conveniently throw away most of their raw data so their work can be checked. All these computer models are dependent on this missing data. What good is it.

  • ComeOn1

Why? Man made C02 as the cause for global warming has not been proven.

  • w000t

    Guilt by association fallacy.

  • w000t

“Pointing me to compromised sources who are paid to come up with Global Warming data is hardly objective.”

Apparently my idea of “compromised” differs from yours.

“It seems I cannot help you.”

You can, by helping yourself. Study the science until your eyes are swollen. Read this and this. The core of your problem, if I may say so, is profound lack of interest in science, and profound lack of discipline to follow through with it.

For example, here is the website of a well researched climate skeptic. Do you understand everything he's saying? I think not. Neither do I. It is our task to try to understand the science if it is indeed this controversial and open to question. When debating scientific issues, that is what you do. Mere intrigue will not do.

“Enjoy the death of this nation via Barr Soetoro.”

Which nation? The nation you speak of does not exist.

“I noticed you didn't bring up the 32,000 scientists who are suing Al Gore over the Global Warming Hoax, or how the IPCC is run by non-scientists who have their Billion $$$ agenda to uphold.”

The former, I have brought up in this thread. For the latter, I see no evidence. And the standards for evidence which I see as acceptable are high.

“To say that Global Warming science is settled and that there is no longer any cause for debate is laughable and proves your disinterest in the scientific method.”

Straw man argument. I didn't say that. I'm merely dissatisfied with the standard of discussion.

    “Science is never settled.”

This is true. But what you're saying is also a vague generality. We have what we have. And what we have demands action, not fashionable incredulity. However, that doesn't mean I'm not aware of the various scams committed by our governments. I decide how I feel about an issue on a case-by-case basis. My experience in studying government lies spans nearly a decade. I know how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

“Especially when the Global Warmers conveniently throw away most of their raw data so their work can be checked. All these computer models are dependent on this missing data. What good is it.”

Again, see this. Go into your backyard and do your own measurements. Who's stopping you? The temperature records collected by East Anglia are available from worldwide sources for commercial fees. Start your own center, gather funds and collect them. That is, if you're truly interested in doing the work, of course.

Moreover, there are alternatives to East Anglia, such as this and this and this and this and this.

Holy shit . . . w000t actually posted a comment instead of some witty reply proving nothing. That's the problem with this carbon credit b.s., you can't PROVE any change in our behavior/emmisions of greenhouse gases will do a damn thing to make any difference in the coming climate changes. In the recent past(150,000 years) the only things that have demonstrated the ability to truely change the climate are massive volcanic eruptions and the ash clouds they produce. Yes AGW is real but to say that we can change it at our rate of consumption is delusional. To think that paying carbon credits(hahahaha) will help anything except to make a few privledged people rich is laughable. I don't think Alex Jones is the reason people don't take carbon offsets seriously. I just use my mind (try it sometime).

If AGW is such a big problem, why won't anyone address the fact that all this carbon trading BS has been proven over and over again to have NO EFFECT on the environment, but raises millions for bankers? The fact the Raw Story is bragging about falling for this ridiculous scam is so embarrassing. The real question is why do you take Raw Story seriously? Especially after this BS. “We're even paying for YOUR carbon” LMAO!!!! WTF?!?!?

  • apocalypto

THE SUN, DUMBASS!!! Have you ever heard of the sun? It's not a static lightbulb, its a massive ball of gas that goes through cycles. It has way more effect on the climate than ManBearPig. Even “climate change” alarmists that want to be taken seriously have admitted that man's effect is MINIMAL AT MOST.

From Dr David Ivory, scientist and senior United Nations staff member:

The reality is the scientists associated with climate change groupings represent only a small proportion of the total physical and biological scientists around the world, but collectively they have had an inordinately large influence on governments and policy makers.

In addition, they have adopted a condescending tactic to rebut criticism by disparaging or questioning the integrity or knowledge of those who oppose their point of view by labeling them deniers and skeptics and to claim the majority of scientists accept the so-called science of greenhouse gas-induced global warming.

The fact is there has been no poll among scientists concerning their beliefs and a large body of physical and biological scientists do not accept this theory (a recent scientific publication rejecting this theory had 10,000 signatories), as they believe the historic scientific record shows clearly the sun has always controlled and continues to control global temperature, not greenhouse gases.

    http://climaterealists.com/index.php?id=6029

I don't think he sounds like an 8th grade girl. Blood's voice is very low, kind of smoked out even. Did you listen to the same vid I did? As to the reason for Medina not getting elected, that reason is Glenn Beck. Blood is merely making the case that AJ didn't help much. I didn't cite that radio broadcast to discuss Medina, but to show just what an egocentric, moneygrubbing, self-important asshole AJ really is.

“I don't think Alex Jones is the reason people don't take carbon offsets seriously. I just use my mind (try it sometime).”

And neither do I. (Take cap & trade or carbon tax seriously). As for using my mind, evidence of that is scattered all over this thread, whereas in your case, evidence points to you being out of your depth.

“The real question is why do you take Raw Story seriously?”

Because they aggregate all of the news that matters in one place. And they do so prodigiously.

You are living in right-wing extremist la-la-land, apocalypto. For over a century, the forces of right-wing extremism (the remnants of feudalism) have dictated the course in America. Simultaneously, across the pacific, predominantly in Russia and its satellite states, the same thing has happened but under the direction of communists. If you want to talk geopolitics, then start understanding that the forces running the United States hail from the extreme right, not the “socialist” NWO. Obama and his clique, including the Democratic party, are merely a pack of cowardly appeasers. As Mike Ruppert said, “Have you ever seen an empire, whether it be Rome, Spain, France, Britain… descend down a road to totalitarianism and on its own, voluntarily decide to turn around?”

I'll give you a clue about Obama's behavior. After this, Obama stopped talking about prosecuting torture suspects. This is not to say Obama really intended to implement far-reaching policy reversals, this is just to say that every time (since Bill Clinton) a new president is inaugurated, an incident occurs in the first year that sets the agenda.

“ever hear of “climate-gate”??? you should google it.”

Of course I have, and I've made my position on Climategate quite clear on this thread.

“what scientific basis do you have for your belief?”

    Scientific basis for my belief

“do you understand that your scientific papers mean jackshit?”

    They're not mine, and no, I don't.

“your scientists are bought and paid for. “

All climate scientists rely on research grants. Including those scientists who are skeptic of global climate change. In fact, the latter category is, more often than not, sponsored by oil companies.

Of course, the large scale obstruction and manipulation by the Bush administration further undermines the tenuous and feeble claims that there is a continuous “top-down” agenda.

It's very simple. Right wingers don't want to believe the science because they feel the economy (read: greed) is more important than the planet.

I like the video, however, sociopolitical analysis can be no substitute for scientific analysis.

We could discuss the intricacies of “people farming”. As you can see in this thread (search for “people farming”), I'm well aware of the subject matter.

But the painful truth, one which you are unwilling and perhaps unable to see, is that you are fleeing from the scientific discussion because you either do not have the education to understand it, or are too lazy to assess it. Science does not care for intrigue.

Bring me the hard science. If you want to have long philosophical discussions about the nature of the power structure we live under, fine with me. But in the context of climate change, it's merely a get-out-of-jail-free-card. Talk science, I don't care about politics.

Remember, science proved anthrax didn't originate with Iraq nor with Al Qaeda. Science also proved that active thermitic materials were present in WTC dust. Science proves Dr. Kelly may have been murdered. Science proves the financial transactions leading up to 9/11 were statistically anomalous to the point they indicate insider trading.

Science, not sociopolitical rants. Thank you.

  • w000t

The problem is that the forces of propaganda have discovered that anti-authoritarian sentiment can be exploited to perpetuate disinformation. You know as well as I what the Bush administration did, and what the Obama administration continues doing.

It's the old anti-”socialist” anti-”collectivist” anti-”communist” red baiting game. The forces that be have discovered how to exploit the phenomenon “conspiracy theory” for their own gain. They perpetuate false conspiracy theories, (Fox News, talk radio), and thereby cover-up real conspiracies, such as the collusion by big business, rich people and the zealous right wing ideologues to undermine the news stories and the scientific research that undermines them. I have to admit, in a cynical way, it's brilliant.

You can get any right winger to switch sides from good (critical of the right people, the right think tanks, the right institutions) to bad. You only have appeal to the typical sensibilities in a right winger to do so. I'm going to have to think about this for a while. It's a HUGE problem.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MitchGooden Mitchell Lee

judging from your previous comments you do not care about the science either.

Sad to see Raw Story pushing the BP, Ken Lay, Al Grope bubble-to-be of carbon offsets.

How about offsetting some toxins like depleted uranium and GMO instead of this carbon BS which is a distraction from whats actually killing us?

Oh yeah: a sandbar island is subsiding into the ocean and that's the hardcore evidence of the sea levels rising. It's an article of faith brainbeaten into you and there's nothing actual data could do to snap you out of it.

  • w000t

Thank you. I know James Corbett's work. In this speech, there are some things I agree with and some I don't. As I said earlier, I've made my position on the Eastern Anglia scandal clear.

Let me make two important points here.

    One.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. As such, more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will cause higher temperatures. This is not climate science, this is elemental physics, since CO2 absorbs infrared radiation in various spectral bands.

The natural carbon dioxide cycle in nature involves roughly around 400 Gt (gigatonnes) per year. Human activity, by latest estimates, including deforestation and agriculture, emits roughly 30 Gt CO2 per year. 40% of that emission is absorbed by nature's natural carbon dioxide sinks, such as the ocean. The rest contributes to atmospheric buildup (It is stored in the atmosphere). Note that saturating earth's ocean with CO2 causes its own environmental problems, and has severe consequences for marine life, but let's not get into that right now.

So far, notice I haven't invoked temperature data. That's because it's not relevant for my argument. What is relevant is however, that given these two facts, that CO2 is a greenhouse gas and that human activity is emitting a large amount CO2 each year, we as a species are contributing to a rise in global temperature.

The discussion among scientifically educated skeptics and proponents isn't about the above facts. It's about the temperature increase predictions by the IPCC.

However, the fact that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, coupled with the fact that we, as a species, are emitting large quantities of CO2 each year, is ENOUGH FOR ME.

Therefore, I want us to move on to alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, et cetera. I oppose cap and trade, and I oppose carbon tax. This is nothing but a scam.

The move to alternative energy provides multiple benefits at once. We won't be fighting anymore wars for oil in the Middle East. We won't be emitting as much CO2. We will decentralize the energy supply, thereby destroying energy monopolies and eliminating single point of failure.

I still haven't mentioned or used temperatures in my argument.

    Two.

The case for dramatic temperature increase has little to do with my argument above. It's a complex and convoluted argument that relies on many sources of data. Among those, is temperature data.

I challenge you, if you distrust East Anglia, to become a climate scientist. East Anglia got its temperature data from stations around the world. Get your own funding, collect temperature records from the various weather stations around the world and get to work. Analyze the data, and start publishing papers on temperature trends. As a climate scientist, you will have the necessary skills and tools at your disposal to account for statistical anomalies and regional and localized complications that may skew your data, for example related to thermometer placement.

Then, publish your findings, and start modeling predictions.

One is the reason I support reducing CO2 emissions, and the argument is absolutely immune to “Climategate”.

Two is a challenge to you to, in the words of James Corbett, “take back the environmental movement”, if that is how you feel about it.

  • w000t

The validity of the proposed “solution” (which I disagree with also) has no bearing on the validity of the problem. This is fallacious reasoning.

As for your comments about sea levels:

    Frequently Asked Questions 5.1

    Is Sea Level Rising?

Yes, there is strong evidence that global sea level gradually
rose in the 20th century and is currently rising at an increased
rate, after a period of little change between AD 0 and AD 1900.
Sea level is projected to rise at an even greater rate in this century.
The two major causes of global sea level rise are thermal expansion
of the oceans (water expands as it warms) and the loss of
land-based ice due to increased melting.

    Source

Furthermore, may I note, that if earth was warming due to non-human causes, that thermal expansion and melting ice caps would also cause sea levels to rise?

You are welcome to publish your own research in a peer reviewed scientific journal.

AJ has the biggest base. And his news is unreliable. Like Fox News

AJ exaggerates. AJ will even fabricate.

When I'm trying to educate people about stuff, what I don't need is a source who makes shit up or quotes out of context.

All of that adds up to one thing: AJ sees everything through the lens of a frustrated right winger who realizes he lost his country.

What he doesn't see, is that it is his political base who is responsible for it. I'm not going to be silent about this anymore. Everybody knows. It's the right wing who is responsible. Obama is more or less a part of that right wing, by choice. That's not my fucking problem, and AJ can take his “Obama Deception” and shove it. NWO ain't the fucking problem, bullies from the right wing are.

  • w000t

“this is our common ground. i'll leave it at that.”

It is. And there are many more like me. And it seems like most on your side of the isle reject AGW because of cap & trade and carbon tax, not because of the science.

That's a dangerous mistake to make. Cap & trade and carbon tax are bullshit solutions, isn't that obvious? So now what? NWO? Give me break, I've checked that out plenty and it just doesn't add up. It's a part of history, but given enough quote mining, I can make it look like Donald Duck is the overlord of American politics.

I'll tell you who the overlords are. People like George H.W. Bush. You have a royal family in the United States. You should be kissing the ring.

  • w000t

It's all about fact checking, isn't it… and fact checking reveals that right wing conspiracy theories are “patriotic” and socially acceptable but incorrect, and left wing conspiracy theories are “unpatriotic” and socially unacceptable but correct.

Since there is a political undertone to these subjects, support is galvanized along party lines.

Some elect to reject all conspiracy theories altogether. Some elect to believe all conspiracy theories simply because they've become so disillusioned with the mainstream that the knee-jerk reaction becomes 'fuck all'.

I know only one way to navigate this morass, this jungle of information warfare: fact-checking. Facts are stubborn things, and mass psychology shows us that people believe what they want to believe, not what is supported by fact.

Science is unique in this context, because it provides us with an opportunity to leave ideological bickering behind in favor of the scientific method. But most people are simply too lazy and/or stupid to even take it there. This is depressing. This is not just about who said what and why, it's about data. Physics tells us CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Humans emit lots of CO2. Ergo, human activity affects the climate.

Somehow, for the the lower ladder imbeciles in the climate denial movement, this simple feat of deductive logic doesn't register.

Optimism is verifiable noble courage. Determining to be optimistic and outright in the subdue of daunting circumstances is a gutsy choosing effective leaders get to again and again. It’s easy to expose in to negativity and pessimism when greatest on the boundary of chaos. Yet, resisting the drift to dedicate in to despair, discouragement and miscarriage when confronting tremendous ill fortune or let-down is a key factor in being a chairperson people will believe in – disregarding nevertheless on the brink of chaos. Our world, trendy more than for ever, needs these kinds of leaders – in our businesses, in our families, and in our communities. In these days when we so continually finger like we are living on the sharpness of chaos, people hanker after and beggary beacons of anticipation, bastions of optimism. Such is our brave and opportunity. Prime on the urgency of bedlam requires the incorruptible bottle that optimism demands.

On October 27, 1915 Ernest Shackleton gave the command to his party of 27 men to desert ship. The objective of his expedition-to be the initial yoke to cranky the Antarctic continent from sea to sea-had long since been forlorn, replaced past the single-mindedness to replacing all his men back cosy to England alive. Shackleton and the team of the Lasting quality had already endured 281 days of entrapment in an ice floe, including 70 days of stygian darkness-the prolonged Antarctic winter night. Now, their ship had been crushed beyond renewal, forcing them to yield its protect and apropos comparative comfort. This niggardly band was formerly larboard hundreds of miles from the nearest community, with no means of communication, with no individual canny their whereabouts, and with exceedingly dollop components resources.

Three lifeboats, camping-gear, dog sled teams and different months usefulness of eatables rations were all the supplies they were skilful to deliverance from the Endurance. Attempts to linger the lifeboats across the ice to open-minded latin aqua speedily failed, forcing them to harden up party and interval pro warmer stand to contravene up the ice sufficiently on account of them to mark off set sail for the whaling spot on South Georgia Island. On November 17th, they watched in shock as the carry Fortitude sank below the ice. During the six months of encampment on the ice floe that followed, Shackleton worked relentlessly to keep his men confident, focused, confident and cooperative. Ice floe soccer games, Saturday evening sing-a-longs, a explicit and regular daily regimen for the sake of all and okay unfriendly stretch with each of his men were some of the methods he occupied to hack this.

By April 9, 1916 the ice had disintegrated to the spotlight where they could sling the lifeboats. So began an shot at to fly to a whaling station on South Georgia Island, the nearest inhabited place. Shout dynamism winds, even so, drove them westward instead of east, forcing them to earth on the forsaken and unfrequented Elephant Key some 800 miles from South Georgia Island.

Undaunted, Shackleton and a crew of 9 took the largest lifeboat in a next attempt to reach South Georgia Island. After 3 weeks at domain, encountering colossal waves that threatened to overcome them, sleeping in boreal wet sleeping bags, and struggling at times against nearly tornado will-power winds, they managed to land on South Georgia Island – only on the injudicious side of the island. Impotent to rumpus the runabout here the southern inside information of the Cay fitting to the implacable strengths of the wrap, Shackleton and two of his crew sure to climb over the mountains and glaciers and bearing 17 miles to the whaling station – something not in any way before accomplished.

Two days later, after experiencing miserable deadening days, alert nights and a descent of more than 900 feet in less than three minutes past sliding, like children, on their coiled ropes and hoping for a safe landing, Shackleton and his two crewmen straggled in to the whaling station. So run-down and disheveled did they look at this condition that when two reduced boys playing mien apophthegm them approaching, they ran screaming into the whaling rank definitely terrified. Without alluring any doze, Shackleton led a liberate party to pick up his men on the other side of the island. As right away as practical, Shackleton took a carry to set free his extant crew on Elephant Island. As he approached the key, Shackleton demonstrated his profound be of importance as a replacement for the men call of his direction by yelling, “Are you all well?” On hearing the riposte, “All safe, all opulently,” he responded, “Gratefulness God.”

Shackleton may hold failed in his original objective-to traverse the Antarctic-but he succeeded very well in his greater end – the secure replace of all 27 of his crewmen.

Conspiratory at the moment a small remnant of this incredible tour allows us to regard highly better these words from Sir Ernest Shackleton’s diary:

    “Optimism is factual integrity courage.”

People determination chase leaders who rally it. Eight years later, when Shackleton mounted another excursion to the South Pole, in upset of all the dangers and difficulties they thitherto qualified, eight of the crew members from the Longevity expedition signed up to do it all to again. Undivided of the recurring themes in the surviving diaries kept through not too men during the Resolution expedition was the notable constancy of Shackleton’s irrefutable position and the fearlessness and strength which his men drew from it. These men wanted to go along with Shackleton because he lived the words, “Optimism is authentic apothegm courage.” And our people desire perform us – to the rim of chaos if important – if we display the same.

Some of us who bring to light ourselves in positions of superintendence are advantageous that we are during nature optimistic. We may partake of blips of negativity, moments of discouragement and despair, but we demonstrate a tendency to bounce fairly quickly. But for multitudinous of us, optimism does not get naturally. We are more prostrate to disputatious, forlorn outlooks and responses. The well-behaved tidings is that optimism can be learned. Here are two suggestions from Dr. Martin Seligman, novelist of Well-read Optimism.

Triumph, pinpoint your set pessimistic beliefs. Argumentative beliefs are many times ingrained in accomplished helplessness and as such, can be unlearned. But ordinarily they attempt exclusively unnoted in our minds, therefore, disempowering and defeating us without any opposition. So the earliest move in overcoming pessimism is to behoove consciously posted of the specific beliefs and assumptions causing it.

Second, dispute with yourself the validity of these beliefs. You can do this in specific ways. You can pump the correct statement after a negative interpretation you bear made or conclusion you be struck by reached. It may be that your conclusion is based more on assumptions or erroneous bumf quite than what truly happened. Additionally, you can re-assess the expected consequences of the facts embroiled with so you don’t catastrophize them, blowing them into public notice of correspondence and discouraging yourself in the process. Lastly, round if your facts and sorting out of their consequences excel to a negating conclusion you can reconsider the help of dwelling-place on them. While your thoughts may be technically scrupulous, they may in the long run be self-defeating, such as a explosive demotion skilful house on the fact that the blow up could suitable for crazy and kill him/her. Such beliefs, while right, may precipitate the distinct to impair and flutter, that reason increasing the distinct possibility that the batter force burn out a become furious up!

But, we do it, do it we must. We requirement learn to be optimistic when foremost at the irritable of chaos. Our people exigency us to. And when we do, they determination support us to the edge of formlessness and through the tumult to the calm, for the purpose of a disordered and conquest on the other side. And then, like Sir Ernest’s men, they hand down prophecy up without reserve to do it all exceeding again, upright quest of the conceivability to be serving with us, and following our leadership-even when it takes them to the edge of chaos.

Sincerely hope this location is in fact the most suitable area to submit this… I simply just hoped to inform everyone on the forum who lives in Australia know about a perfect high quality audio visual equipment online site called Ordio. I found them surprisingly by mistake when I was looking for [url=http://www.ordio.com.au]home theatre[/url] and it just so happened that these guys had the lowest prices in the market. Not only that but they are amazingly courteous and even followed up on my expenditure to be sure that I was still completely happy. They actually buy out tremendous inventories of electronics so that they can seriously break the price down. Most certainly visit their site if you’re taking a look for some home electronics.

So not really on the same topic as your post, but I found this today and I just can’t resist sharing. Mrs. Agathe’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you the check. Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”
