I'm going to take an unpopular and selfish position with regards to unemployment compensation. I believe that benefits should not be extended. Here's why.

The old economy is broken, gone forever and never to return. The manufacturing jobs are gone and any job that can be outsourced has been outsourced. Furthermore, the giant credit bubble that allowed us to pretend that our entire economic base was not in ruin is gone too and I doubt it will return.

A new arrangement must arise from the ashes but as long as we continue to hand out “temporary” insurance to people that are never going back to their old jobs or their old level of pay, that “day” gets put on hold.

Next, about the only thing the USA has going for it (literally) is the fact that we hold the world's reserve currency. That means that we can print money to buy things like oil and computers from other nations. Sadly, our government will issue more debt this year than the rest of the world combined. Debt like this may cause other nations to rethink accepting our currency and if that happens (remember, we don't make much here anymore) we're in a whole lot of trouble. Handing out never ending benefits puts our government deeper in debt and threatens our very currency.

Lets end this Bread and Circus once and for all and see what world awaits us on the other side. It will probably look a lot smaller but we may get back more than we lost.

Actually, you'll see unbelievable amounts of starvation the day after we lose our reserve currency status. The US produces less than 1/2 of the oil that our economy needs in order to function. We purchase the other half with money that we create out of thin air. Other nations have to work and produce things in order to obtain oil – we do not.

Our days our numbered because of the public debt. We can not afford bailouts for the TBTF banks, tax cuts for the wealthy or endless cash to the unemployed. Again, we will issue more debt this year than the rest of the world combined.

This is not a Republican vs Democrat issue because those guys are not in any way in charge. We live in a corporate state now and those guys are willing to throw the peasants a few crumbs until things become irreversibly broken. All I'm suggesting is that we should not make millions of people dependent on corporate table scraps.

Right now we all have the mentality that government or someone will take care of our poor. We believe that those that are in our community are being provided for by “someone”. I want my community to KNOW that NO ONE is taking care of the poor. Then we, as a community, will do something about it.

Just a reminder to people here that there was an article recently about how the GOP is going to attempt to make the upcoming election all about the democrats and avoid any discussion about themselves. We can't let them get by with that. They want to avoid any discussion about their policies and political agenda because the fact of the matter is they only represent the very rich. And they don't want to be confronted with the fact that all they have done is to diligently obstruct anything and everything the dems have attempted to accomplish for the people since obama took office–and they've made no secret that their intention all along has been to cause obama and the dems to fail–they could care less about their flesh and blood constituents.

We need to confront them head on–what have they accomplished since obama took office, other than to oppose literally everything that might benefit the people or help them in any way to get through the economic crisis (that the bush administration GOP policies created in the first place)? What has the GOP done for the people that makes them even slightly worthy of our trust, much less worthy to lead us? The practice – and the attitude — also diminish voluntary charity, goodwill, and volunteering. When people have to pay such high taxes (including inflation: look at college loan debt amongst people in their thirties) that both spouses have to work to pay the taxes and the inflation-ignited interest, they don't have time left to volunteer or money left to donate.

We serve hundreds of people in our church basement once a week (tag team with other churches the other six nights). None of us gets paid, and we donate (and in our case we raise) all the food ourselves. That's the ticket. Private, voluntary charity, where both the giver and the receiver can say a cheerful “thank you.”

Two things for ya.. First, not all employers are exploiters. Some actually pay fair wages for work done, some aren't greedy pricks looking to use other humans to elevate their own status. Interestingly, those are also the kinds of employers that aren't making over $250,000 a year in take home gross, so their taxes aren't going up anyway.. that also includes many who DO take home more than that, and a lot of them probably wouldn't mind having people available to buy their products, and so giving money to the unemployed that would spend it is OK with them.

The second thing is, those making millions a year don't “work hard”, they ARE exploiters to a very large degree.. and they don't “interview” the rabble like us, they pay managers meager wages to toil with such things while the ones getting all the cash are out on the Golf Course striking deals over 9 holes, or out on their yacht for their 12th week of vacation for the year. THOSE are the same guys getting money even if people in America can't buy their products.. they aren't mom-n-pop outfits with limited sales potential, they are over paid blowhards working in “high industry” with global deals funding their decadence. I think a better plan would be for everyone who can, apply to be on the ballot in November for their district/State. Make that pool as big as you can, run as Independent or with some other party.. get the incumbent right-winger voting record out there to at least give the public reason to get them out, and if the D in your race is an establishment D, find the dirt on them (they would have plenty).

Clearly, that's all easier said than done.. which is the major problem in our current world. These are tired, over simplified framings of millenia old concepts that surround all societies. Taxation is one of the cornerstones of civilization and society, period. If that concept is foreign to you, if you don't understand the idea that “we must contribute to society” in SOME way if we want a peaceful, safe, healthy existence, then you're not worth having a conversation with. No one gets something for nothing, let alone an entire society. Life is not free, that's a simple universal truth.

The Founding Fathers allowed for taxation in the Constitution. You seem to suggest they made a mistake, so I'll ask you what other parts of that document you think should be tossed, what other parts you think men who spent more time thinking before lunch than you do in a year “messed up”. The Republicans don't care if they destroy a nation just to be in charge. It's proof positive they don't give a damn about this country, only what's in for them and their cult.

Well, I think right now, for the upcoming election, we need to focus our energies on making damn sure the repubs do not regain any power–they would like nothing better than for the liberals and progressives to become divided and fighting amongst ourselves rather than focusing on them. I think your strategy would only serve to play right into the repub's hands–that's why they provided the funding for the green party to get on the ballot in texas so they could siphon off dem votes.

You'll get no argument from me that there is corruption on both sides of the aisle–dem or repub–both have been corrupted and feeding at the corporate trough to the detriment of their constituents. However, I think that our strategy must at this point include unity amongst progressives and liberals to make g-damned sure those repub thugs don't regain their power in November–and you can bet they're planning to pull every dirty, foul trick in the book to make it happen.

Don't get me wrong, I am quite angry with the pathetic and spineless dems, but I absolute loathe and detest the GOP and everything those bastards stand for. As I've said before, when I cast my vote in November, I won't be voting FOR anyone–I'll be voting AGAINST the repubs. Once that threat has been eliminated, then we can go after and elminate the corruption within the dem leadership.

We've got to send a very clear message in November and I think one way of doing that is for the repubs to lose by a landslide and then the pussified dems will have absolutely no excuse to fall back on for failing to succeed getting policies through that are in the best interests of the American flesh and blood people.

If the American people are to take back control of the govt–instead of constant knee-jerk reactions–we need to be unified in our resolve, but above all, we must be SMART about it–there are after all some fairly diabolical forces involved.

Corporations should loose the tax shelters that they enjoy, until they begin to bring jobs back home and hire Americans. Once again, corporations are riding on the backs of taxpayers and along with the rethugs are holding Americans hostage in an attempt to bring down this Administration by withholding jobs. They love the status quo, and hate change. They shamelessly continue to trample the unemployed and their constituents.

I learned as an educator (History and Government) that I could not compete with MTV, Playstation gaming, unlimited supplies of drugs and all the other distractions that teenagers in this country enjoy. I'm sorry, but isn't it about time the Congressional Democrats fess up to being useless as nipples on a hairy man? The Republicans changed the entire face of American politics, foreign policy, tax structure, unconstitutional intrusions, and they did this with a smaller majority in Congress in about the same amount of time it has taken the current Democratic administration and both houses of Congress to do virtually nothing of substance. Now it is election (re: performance evaluation) time and they continue to blame their lack of balls on the Republicans. They squander their goodwill and overwhelming public political support–major electoral victories in 2006 and 2008–by pecking around the edges of critical issues I find it appalling that they now try and blame the other party. Bush “won” in 2000 only by the intervention of his daddy's SCOTUS. He LOST the popular vote, yet he moved decisively forward–with Democratic support I might add–to give the largest tax breaks in history to his patrons in the top 1%, AND start two wars with nary a peep from the Democrats in Congress.

The Democrats have the largest Congressional majorities (but not likely for much longer) in living memory AND they have the White House. Yet, they cannot get anything done because of the big bad Republicans. If you were in a war zone and the fighting was ferocious, would you want these milquetoast squirrels protecting your back? I think not. Rather than resolve to kick ass and take names, the Democrats whine and whimper.
