NYC to pay $7M to settle lawsuit in 50-bullet police shooting in `06 that killed unarmed man.

The city of New York has agreed to pay more than $7 million to settle a civil lawsuit stemming from the fatal 50-bullet police shooting of an unarmed man on his wedding day.

The settlement filed in Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday pays $3.25 million to the estate of Sean Bell, who was killed in 2006 outside a strip club in Queens while leaving his bachelor party. As part of the settlement, the city agreed to pay $3 million to Joseph Guzman and $900,000 to Trent Benefield, both of whom were wounded in the shooting that killed their friend.

The lawsuit had accused the city of wrongful death, negligence, assault and civil rights violations.

“We hope that all parties can find some measure of closure by this settlement,” the city’s attorney, Michael A. Cardozo, said in a statement.

An attorney for the plaintiffs, Scott Rynecki, said the settlement was hard-fought over two days and that the plaintiffs felt it was the best outcome possible.

“I think it was all about closure at this point,” Rynecki told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

Three police officers were acquitted of manslaughter and other charges in 2008. Federal authorities in February declined to bring civil rights charges against them.

The officers remain on modified duty and are facing departmental charges that could result in their dismissal.

The Bell settlement follows other multimillion-dollar payouts in high-profile civil lawsuits involving the police department.

In June, the city agreed to pay a record for a civil rights lawsuits when it agreed to settle for $9.9 million with Barry Gibbs, an innocent man who spent 19 years in prison after being framed by a police detective.

In 2001, the city and police union agreed to pay $8.7 million to Abner Louima, who was beaten and sodomized with a broomstick in a police precinct by officers. After legal fees, Louima was left with about $5.8 million.

The man was murdered by the police. An eye for an eye. Some police need to be tried for murder. This man is dead. He will not walk again, he will never feel another drop of rain, the taste of steak, or the taste of wine, the joy of love.

    An eye for an eye.

FUCK THE POLICE MAN!!! So they walk away with no charges but we the taxpayers have to pay the price for their criminal illegal murderous behavior?????????????

A drunk black guy, sitting in a car, outside a strip joint. Yeah, that's a killin'. In New York, anyway.

If the cops had planted a gun in the car, or on Bell, they might have gotten away with it. I hope they are all fired, and the cop inside the strip joint “investigating”, the one who started the whole thing, should go to prison.

    Not guilty, and guilty.

    Acquitted, and convicted.

    Both!

Two, two, two truths in one!

This was another of these special drug task units that are super trigger happy. Not only do they shoot people but they have a long record of killing pets during “dangerous” drug busts. They have been trained that “drug” people are low life scum that deserve to die and have no rights and if they don't find drugs they'll plant them and file false records. And of course this is just another sad story covering the war on drugs where another innocent victim is caught in the crossfire. leap.cc

7 millions sounds like enough to cover 1 bullet, now how about the other 49

I have zero tolerance or sympathy for Cops…I was brought up in the fifties…my parents always told me if I was in trouble, lost, etc…find a cop and they would help me…now I believe that they would beat me, (I am to old and ugly for them to rape) rob or shoot me, the cops are as rotten, corrupt and contemptuous of life or/and property as any street thug with a gun, terrorizing and bullying citizens, is…I wouldn't go near one, wouldn't ask for their help and I sure as hell wouldn't help them…

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
