Study: 10 pct. of Mexicans may emigrate to US due to climate change, decreased crop yields

mexicorecountrally Study: 10 pct. of Mexicans may emigrate to US due to climate change, decreased crop yieldsGlobal warming could drive millions more Mexicans into the United States in search of work by 2080 due to diminishing crop yields in Mexico, a study released Monday showed.

"Depending on the warming scenarios used and adaptation levels assumed... climate change is estimated to induce 1.4 to 6.7 million adult Mexicans (or two percent to 10 percent of the current population aged 15-65 years) to emigrate as a result of declines in agricultural productivity alone," the study said.

Researchers led by Michael Oppenheimer of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University estimated the sensitivity of migration to climate change and predicted the number of Mexicans who would migrate under a range of different climate and crop yield scenarios.

In the worst-case scenario would occur if temperatures were to rise by one to three degrees Celsius (1.8 to 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2080, if farming methods had not been adapted to cope with global warming and if higher levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide had not spurred plant growth. This would mean crop yields in Mexico would fall by 39 to 48 percent, the study said.

"In that case, the increase in Mexico's emigration as a share of population would be between 7.8 percent and 9.6 percent," said the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Story continues below...

"Using today's population of 70 million as the base for the age 15-65 year population in Mexico, this percentage increase corresponds to an additional 5.5 to 6.7 million emigrants," it said.

The study focused on Mexico because it is "one of the biggest migrant-source countries, because there exists state-level data on emigration, and because it has undergone diverse degrees of climate variability across regions."

But the findings are relevant to the many countries in Africa, south Asia, and Latin America, and even to Australia, where the authors of the study predict migration will become a "significant issue" as climate change drives temperatures up and crop yields down.

Legalize drugs and dump NAFTA. You might discover that “those” others down south just want to make money and raise their families, LIKE ANY OTHER NORMAL PERSON.

  2. whoodoo

More like, a grossly irresponsible Catholic church and totally corrupt government that thrives on thievery have joined to create rampant over-population, environmental devastation, and a continuous health and education crisis, with income disparities that leave the majority in poverty will cause many Mexicans to exploit the equally lame U.S. efforts (by both its political parties) to maintain its own sovereignty and advantage themselves of freebies being handed out by corrupt state and local governments on this side of the border.

The Woodrow Wilson school is giving scholarship and academe a bad name. If they are still looking at such things as migration as a univariate function of any one thing (global warming in this case), they're either stuck in the 19th century or purposely practicing to deceive.

A headline like this just might get some wingnuts on board with global warming legislation. As long as they don't read the story and see that the effects are 70 years out. Why the hell would they worry about that, it won't affect THEM. Despite all that family values crap, they really don't give a shit what happens to their grand kids. See: deficit.

  5. peaceloveunderstanding

lets spread some propaganda to get all the anti immigration racists on board with climate change

  6. jamminjohn

So lets move the Mexican border up to, oh, say, the Arizona/Utah border. That way any Mexicans in Arizona will be legal and all Americans in Arizona will be illegals. Then all the illegal Americans can be stopped by Mexican police and forced to work at Nike plants and eat nothing but taco-bell burritos. Oh, the humanity!

There is no such thing as a Mexican race. 40 different races make up the population of mexico.

Of course there are people who will hurl charges of racism just to try to get away with some bad behavior. The Likud will call you anti semitic if you criticize their bad behavior toward Gaza, even though the people you are trying to protect in Gaza are ethnically more semitic than most of the Likud party.

    Noooooooo!!!! Don't do it!!

Do yourself a favor and do not subject yourself to this stupid drivel. This Winslow idiot thinks it’d be a *great* idea to annex Mexico and saddle ourselves with several millions of new welfare recipient. He thinks it’d be a *fine* thing for us to colonize this second-world rat-hole, attempt to remake their society into something halfway workable…even though they don’t share our language, our values, or our dedication to freedom and equality. Sheesh.

And to make it even worse…the writing is execrable!! I’d call it a badly written manifesto, except that ‘manifesto’ would give it far too much literary cachet.

Ad hominem attacks, racism, xenophobia – what great reasoning power, not. Maybe it's your values and dedication to freedom and equality that we don't share. You don't have an argument, just an opinion, one loaded with hate. You're sick, get a doctor.

It's time the U.S. rejected the minority clinging to this mentality and opened up to the future of sharing the New World in peace and prosperity sans racism. The way to do it is laid out in step-by-step fashion only in my Megamerge Dissolution Solution proposal. Who else has any proposal even on the table now? Nobody. All the popular demagogues like Tom Tancredo have are lame attempts at pandering to the worse elements. They are dinosaurs, and the future belongs to me, not you and them, sorry.

More and more people are taking the time to seriously peruse the MMDS and open up to the idea and discuss it with their reps. How about you? Find time and click http://go.to/megamerge

…can someone pls turn up the Air Conditioning !!!!!

  64. palmharbor

Your local NRA has a loan program…they will loan you a 38 special and one round…take it and end your agony.

  65. WilyArmadilla

ROTFL!!! Yeah, I'm sure that you and your cronies do NOT share my dedication to freedom and equality…after all, you want to forcibly annexing a sovereign nation and coerce their population into adhering to social norms that they do not share. Or annexing a sovereign nation and forcing OUR population to live within the norms of their people…norms like gender bias, misogyny-machismo, gay bashing, la mordita, *real* racism and xenophobia, scorn for honesty, for the law, and the police, as well as an indifference for the rights (and property) of others.

Now, you can call me all the names in the book but that doesn't make a stupid idea any *less* stupid, nor does it transform rambling, disjointed, and almost unintelligible prose into something cogent, concise, or persuasive. Whatever you think about me personally is irrelevant. Doesn't change the quality of your writing (or the lack thereof) nor does it make the 'plan' any less idiotic and unworkable.

You say that nobody “has any proposal even on the table”? Well, wrong. Here's a novel idea (and one that’s been around for quite a while) – ENFORCE THE LAW!!! Of course, *that* would never occur to someone who thinks open borders will lead to some kind of utopian New World Order where everyone respects each other, racism disappears, and Kumbaya rings from every mountainside.

Frankly, I'm highly skeptical that your plan for a New World Order is being taken seriously by *anyone* – except other Open Borders – NAU nutjobs, of course.

  66. historyscoper

“after all, you want to forcibly annexing a sovereign nation and coerce their population into adhering to social norms that they do not share. Or annexing a sovereign nation and forcing OUR population to live within the norms of their people…norms like gender bias, misogyny-machismo, gay bashing, la mordita, *real* racism and xenophobia, scorn for honesty, for the law.”

First you exposed your ignorance, racism and xenophobia, now you expose your lack of basic intellect by trying to pontificate on a well thought-out well-written article without reading it. Even the simplified intro says that the U.S. first has to invite Mexico to form a mega nation and allow its people to vote via referendum, hence there is no coercion, unless the Mexican govt. won't recognize the results and tries to stop the will of the people. I won't respond to any more of your knee-jerk ignorant rants because that's all they are. If anybody wants to debate the article they at least have to read it first then quote from it and try to make a point after that. I only respond to informed arguments not ignorant opinions, sorry.
The truth is you don't want to read the article, and don't want anybody else to, because you need to stay ignorant to coddle your village white racism and Mexican xenophobia. Too bad, your type is fast becoming a dinosaur. One more time: http://go.to/megamerge

  67. WilyArmadilla

LOL!!! Yeah, I know it's a barely coherent, badly written, rambling bit of tripe because I didn't read it. Heh!! Actually, I think that I lost some IQ points from wading through your sludge and I wanted to save others from a similar fate. As for 'debating' this blather…doing so would imply that it had some merit worthy of discussion. Which it doesn't.

But nobody needs to take *my* word for it. Frankly, if anyone else *wants* to waste their time slogging through your idiocy, they are perfectly welcome to do so. And I wish them luck. I also suggest that they have a bucket near at hand to deal with the nausea they're gonna feel right about page 2…

Hey, all I'm doing is warning them what to expect. By all means…if you're intrigued by the idea of open borders and believe that having such will mean a happy-happy, joy-joy world where everyone respects everyone else (and you aren't put off by obscurity, circular logic, or rambling, run-on sentances) by all means…read the thing.

    But don't say I didn't warn you.

This is one of those typical “scary” articles, full of “could”, “may”, “possibly”, “worst-case scenario”, “assumed”, “if”… Yeah, definitely scary stuff. I “may” start worrying “if” the “possibly” “worst case scenario” presented here “could” come to pass.

  70. pinroot

Typical liberal “compassion”: believe in what I do, or die.

  71. pinroot

Well, gee, if it's a “scientific paper” then there's no way it could be wrong, is there? Scientific papers are never wrong. Believe what the scientific papers tell you, don't ask questions, be a good little serf and submit willingly to what you are told. Yeah, I guess you're right, I feel better now that I know it's a scientific paper… LOL

WHY DON'T YOU GO ON FOXNEWS and explain to families of the 500+ people

heat. The last person who could not accept the truth, died in a bunker in Berlin
    in 1945.

  73. pinroot

My skepticism is holding up just fine, thanks for asking. This paper claims all this is 70 years away. I so regret that I won't be here then to laff and laff and laff at all the absurd claims being made to scare people into giving up their freedoms in the name of saving the planet. Of course, in 70 years, we'll probably be worried about the coming man made Ice Age (just like in the late 60's and early 70's). People never learn, and their short term memories are shit.

  74. after dealing with 4 feet of snow all winter in a temperate part of Virginia…and now it's over 100 degrees F and shattering records for a month in the summer, you have to acknowledge the extreme & unusual weather conditions that are consistent with both Global Warming and the predictions of nearly all scientific experts on the subject. Try living it here…107 degrees in a town where 80 is normally plenty hot for July. And snow WAS unheard of, before…..

  75. richardgrabman

Uh, Mexico has a declining birthrate, and our constitution includes the right to family planning. Church and state were separated in 1854, and until the 1990s, clerics couldn't vote, or appear in clerical garb in public. Might help if you had some idea of what you were talking about, instead of attacking scholars who sorta, kinda know their material.

  76. pinroot

Wow, talk about ad hominem attacks, comparing me with Hitler. Seriously, if that's the best rebuttal you have, you can probably understand why I'm skeptical. From what I've found, they didn't die last week, that's the total since the start of April (http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/07/20/belg...). You might want to get your facts straight before comparing me to Hitler; you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

You probably aren't aware that more people die from the cold than from the heat. Most who die from heat don't die from the heat itself, but from complications brought on by pollutants being trapped in the air, or ozone. This one article even points it out:
The deaths were mainly among those 80 and older, she said, and many already had underlying conditions such as heart and respiratory problems. The elderly and those with health problems can be particularly susceptible to hot weather.

And then there's this (from http://www.co2science.org/articles/V12/N47/EDIT...
The two researchers say their results “point to widely different impacts of cold and hot temperatures on mortality.” In the later case, they discovered that “hot temperature shocks are indeed associated with a large and immediate spike in mortality in the days of the heat wave,” but that “almost all of this excess mortality is explained by near-term displacement,” so that “in the weeks that follow a heat wave, we find a marked decline in mortality hazard, which completely offsets the increase during the days of the heat wave,” such that “there is virtually no lasting impact of heat waves on mortality [italics added].”

In the case of cold temperature days, they also found “an immediate spike in mortality in the days of the cold wave,” but they report that “there is no offsetting decline in the weeks that follow,” so that “the cumulative effect of one day of extreme cold temperature during a thirty-day window is an increase in daily mortality by as much as 10% [italics added].” In addition, they say that “this impact of cold weather on mortality is significantly larger for females than for males,” but that “for both genders, the effect is mostly attributable to increased mortality due to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.”

In further discussing their findings, Deschenes and Moretti state that “the aggregate magnitude of the impact of extreme cold on mortality in the United States is large,” noting that it “roughly corresponds to 0.8% of average annual deaths in the United States during the sample period.” And they estimate that “the average person who died because of cold temperature exposure lost in excess of ten years of potential life [italics added],” whereas the average person who died because of hot temperature exposure likely lost no more than a few days or weeks of life. Hence, it is clear that climate-alarmist concerns about temperature-related deaths are wildly misplaced, and that halting global warming – if it could ever be done – would lead to more thermal-related deaths, because continued warming, which is predicted to be greatest in earth's coldest regions, would lead to fewer such fatalities.

So since more people die from the cold, I would think you'd be screaming about that, but you never hear anyone saying anything about the cold winters killing people. It's only news when it fits your agenda…

  77. w000t

If you published a scientific paper in a peer reviewed journal refuting these findings, I might consider weighing the options of possibly, perhaps, taking you slightly seriously. You see, this is how peer review and the scientific method apply. Until you properly challenge findings, you lose, twat.

Often I see responses whining and nattering about the “Hegelian dialectic” or “serfdom” or “your [sic] a fool who believes everything the media tells you”, and this is a big red flag. It means there's a terminally ignorant moron on the loose again and it has found an internet connection.

  78. w000t

    (A) That's a denialist website, it uses denialist jargon such as “climate-alarmist”
    (B) The hyperlink is dead or incorrect
    (C) Therefore, I cannot verify the claim, nor if it is a scientifically sound claim, instead of denialist gossip.
    (D) Climate change causes extreme temperature fluctuations, involving both heat and cold waves. Abnormal cold periods are not a sign that everything is 'alright', but quite the opposite. In fact, global warming could cause an ice age, because we are fucking up the gulf stream.
    (E) Global dimming is another form of anthropogenic global climate change, and it lowers temperatures. If we clean the air, we're going to experience the full effects of AWG. By your logic, then, you are a “climate-alarmist”, in the words of the bullshit website you cited. Cute eh?
    (F) Did I mention you're a damn fool?

  85. whoodoo

A weak rebuttal indeed. My point was univariate (v. multivariate) analysis and conclusions of an obviously multiple variable problem – illegal migration.

Mexico's “declining” birthrate is only on average and highly misleading with respect to who the illegal migrants are (the demographic). In any case, Mexico's population won't stop growing for at least 30 years. As in all countries, the wealthier and better educated have fewer children (2.5/family for that class in Mexico) and that pulls the otherwise high average down (as outliers do in any computation of the mean or average), but those are a minority and not the people who are illegally migrating to the U.S.. Rather, it's the relatively poor and relatively uneducated indigenous groups with much higher rates of reproduction that are being forced out by the factors I name. Further, the predicted reproductive decline over the next decades is based on bringing the vast majority of poverty ridden up in terms of education and wealth – not likely to happen given the corruption throughout the system. Additionally, their government is all to happy to see them go and goes to great effort to influence politics in the U.S. to keep the escape value open. In addition to its corruption, it is also a distinctly racist state – watch Mexican TV and see how many indigenous Mexicans you see? While you can find scholars who cite religion (predominately Catholic and vociferously against birth control of any kind) as a cause of high birth rates, other sociologists wrap themselves into knots to avoid taking on that knotty problem – and whose more likely to take the priests' advice, the educated or the uneducated?

By “our”, I presume that your talking about the Mexican constitution, it's state-church separation and clerics but, that misses the point of the tremendous influence of the Catholic church on the population (which again, is inversely related to education level and wealth). IOW, So what?

    a) Unlike you, who use “denialist” rather than skeptic.
    b) don't know about the link, it worked yesterday.
    c) see both a and b
    d) the climate has always changed, and always will, without man's help. Please tell me what the proper climate for the planet is? We'd all love to know.
    e) If you clean the air, you'll feel the full effects of nature.
    f) yeah, couldn't finish without a little name calling could you? Don't you feel all smug about yourself now?

Yeah, maybe I could do like the IPCC and pull comments out of articles and call them “peer rviewed”. Would that make you happy? And what is it with you and the name calling? Does it really make you feel superior, as in “Wow, I really showed him!”? Does it make you feel just a little bit better than those you insult?

Actually, I think just the reverse is true. There are none so blind as those who will not see, and you're apparently one of those who refuse to step outside your comfort zone and see the world for what it is.

Feel free to call me more names, if it makes you feel better or superior. It still doesn't make you right :)
